FLAMING GUEST POST PART NINE

The day after the fire, I tramped through the burned woods with my dad. There was something I wanted to check. When I first came outside, I saw a patch of green in the middle of the burnt woods in my backyard. It was that green patch that I was drawn to. Could it be? I felt hope as my sneakers crunched charcoal wood. The trails that I used to follow were gone, but something remained.

I walked around the patch that miraculously had not caught fire, and froze. There it was—my childhood fort. This fort was special. It was made entirely of pine needles, and it was in the shape of an igloo.

My spirits soared. After seeing what happened to our family cat, I had needed something good to lift me up. And there it was…a memory that could live on and not just in my head, but in nature, in life.

FLAMING CRIMES EXCERPT

The flames had taken possession of the entire woods behind their house, the woods Beth had said she used to explore when she was a kid.

Donovan recalled the memories she had shared with him when they first moved in. She had led him through a winding path in the woods lined by palmetto bushes with inch-long teeth on their branches.

He could hear her voice as if she stood beside him. “One time, when I got lost in here, I pushed through all of the palmetto bushes to get to our backyard. By the time I made it, my arm was cut up, and I was bawling. My mom had to bandage my arm with pieces of fresh aloe, gauze, and elastic wrap.”

Deep in the woods, in a beam of sunlight, was an igloo-shaped structure made of pine needles—Beth’s childhood fort. She had said she would go to her fort and play house for hours. “Now I don’t have to pretend,” she had said and kissed him.

Now the fort that held such sweet memories of her childhood was nothing but a pile of ash. Donovan let out a sigh. First, Beth had lost the home she grew up in because of Hurricane Sabrina. Now the woods she had played in were up in smoke.

This may be short, but it is packed with action and danger.

Uh oh.

The streets of Cleveland are way too quiet, as Officers Blake and Max patrol the streets. All my senses are on high alert.

Then…all hell breaks loose. Officers are down and it is a blood bath.

Blake may have volunteered for a suicide mission, but he had no doubt it was the right thing to do. Imagine, working undercover work with the most dangerous man in the city, then going to your day job as a cop, knowing they want you dead. What if you are found out?

OMG, Chrys. WTF…a cliffhanger. I was already barely hanging on, but now, only one hand is left and I feel it slipping…

Good thing I can fall right into 30 Seconds…

Terror, being chased, running, hiding the beginning.

Dani Hart literally bumped into Blake and her life took a turn…for the worse or for the better? You decide.

Their pasts had shaped their future and fate had brought them together.

Even as evil tears the place apart all around Dani, Chrys manages to slip a little humor into the story.

She makes a stupid mistake answering a call, and, well…

Dani is so darn cute, but fierce too.

I love that Blake is always cooking, so maybe the way to a woman’s heart is through her stomach.

And, of course, sometimes a situation calls for a snowball fight. Such a simple pleasure.

“It took me 30 seconds to fall in love with you…”

Fear of death = instalove

The suspense grows and the pace is smooth…until, well, you will need to find out for yourself.

Well, Chrys, it was a gorgeous morning here in the Florida Panhandle. The sun was shining, the surfers were out and everyone was having a great time frolicking in the waves.

The first indication something was amiss was when the sea birds took flight in panic. I could feel a breeze that was different than normal and the hair on my arms and neck stood on end. Tingles ran down my spine…and the water rushed in. And it kept coming. It swept me off my feet, and I was driven down…down…down, being slammed into the pavement. I could feel the flesh being stripped from my body as I struggled to rise to the surface for a much needed breath of air. I frantically searched for anything to grab onto as the water rose…and rose…Just when I thought I couldn’t last any longer, someone reached out and grabbed my hand. I looked up and the most beautiful hazel eyes looked down at me. It was the best day of my life…Mr Wonderful had saved me…

MY REVIEW

I have been following Beth and Donovan’s journey through one catastrophe after another in this fabulous thriller series. They first met in Hurricane Crimes, and had one hell of an adventure in Seismic Crimes and Lightning Crimes.

Now they face the rage of a Tsunami in Oahu, on their honeymoon, no less.

I have fallen for the characters. I watch as they grow and develop into more complex individuals. Beth is strong, independent, loving and giving. Better think twice about messing with her and her man. Donaovan and Thorn are best friends and both are in love with Beth. Their testosterone levels are so high, I think they need to pull them out and measure their ‘meat sword’. LOL Their friendly rivalry makes for some humorous situations. I love a good villain and Jackson Storm fits the bill nicely.

The suspense builds, there is lots of action, and the suspense builds some more. Beth and Donovan are both targets and ya never know where the danger may come from. It lurks around every corner. Where and when will it strike?

Chrys Fey’s descriptive writing makes the story come alive, as if it is a movie playing out in my head. She has the ability to create doubt, even though I know the ending. She keeps the suspense at a fever pitch that goes on and on, never letting up, leaving me feeling wrung dry of my emotions. I finally reach the end and breathe a sigh of relief.

Excellent job, Chrys!

The Ground Shook – Seismic Crimes by Chrys Fey @ChrysFey

I was super eager to get my hands on Seismic Crimes by Chrys Fey.

I have enjoyed her stories and I got to name a character in this one.

I can hardly wait to meet Jackson Storm.

MY REVIEW

Chrys Fey is a fantastic author who is always on the top of my reading list. She did not let me down in Seismic Crimes. Seismic Crimes picks up where Hurricane Crimes left off. The recap does not require you to read it first, though I would recommend doing so.

Beth’s journey continues with Donovan, which began in Hurricane Crimes, and now they are caught in an earthquake in San Francisco, being chased by a killer.

Is there such a thing as love at first sight? She risks a lot for him after knowing him for a day. It works for me.

Beth is an independent person, able to take care of herself, but Donovan easily fits into her life. He is hunky…hot…and action oriented, in more ways than one. Lots of romance and action, along with plenty of mystery and suspense, as Beth and Donovan take their relationship to a new level.

I am familiar with hurricanes and they don’t really scare me. There is plenty of time for preparation and if it’s going to be a big one, ya just get out of the way. Not so with earthquakes. I cannot imagine how terrifying it is to have your whole world shaking beneath your feet.

I could not help but chuckle at Beth’s thoughts while she is at the police station. It’s not starting out so well for them.

What can I say about Jackson Storm…? I love that Chrys made him a…and I see some deliciously good stuff coming next.

Humor and romance go well together and Chrys Fey does a great job of blending them while keeping the suspense percolating.

Some sexy, hot scenes. I would recommend this for adults.

If I Were A Mobster Blogfest @ChrysFey

I was invited to participate in If I Were A Mobster Blogfest by Chrys Fey through her blog and it sounded like so much fun, I could not resist. I LOVE a ‘good’ criminal! 😈

MY MOBSTER PROFILE:

My Mobster Name: The Claw. I already had a moniker from a previous ‘job’, so why change a good thing. But…it’s a secret as to why and I would have to kill you if I told you.

My Rank: I am a minion, or should I say a private contractor, because I like some freedom, especially when I am on a mission and I don’t want the responsibility or hassle of having people waiting for me to tell them what to do. I am a loner.

Crime Zone: Pensacola, Florida

My Look/Disguise: I have long black hair worn straight. I wear skinny jeans, a black turtleneck with a black leather jacket and black boots that come to just below the knee. I hide behind an oversized pair of sunglasses. No jewelry because it might get in the way.

Weapon of Choice: A sniper rifle.

Mobster Vehicle: A Camaro so I can make a fast getaway, if necessary, and I like cruising in style. It will blend in better than a Ferrari. I may even have a motorcycle on the side, for those special occasions.

What I’m Known For: Assassinations.

My Catch Phrase: In my sight.

The Name of my Mob Leader: Ms Black, I know it doesn’t sound so mobstery, but my gang has some class…AND they are all female. Didn’t see that coming, did ya?

How I Got the Name for my Villain

I believe all antagonists need a good name. A name that breathes evil, that can cause chills or ooze authority if the villain is a leader. Jackson Storm is one of the bad guys in Seismic Crimes and the worst of the worst. He kills without a thought, and he has committed every crime in the book, multiple times over. For fun. The leader of countless lesser criminals, he is responsible for the deaths of many innocent people and law enforcement officers alike. He even had ties to a police-killing Mob in Cleveland, Ohio.

When I first wrote him into Seismic Crimes, I had no idea what to name him, so I left a line everywhere his name needed to be.

Ex: “Donovan isn’t here, but I can help you look for that bra.” He sneered at her. “I’m ___________ and you would be…”

After I finished Seismic Crimes, his name still eluded me, so I came up with the idea of holding a contest on Facebook asking my followers for their suggestions. I got many great options, but one stood out for this notorious criminal—Jackson Storm.

Jackson, usually a surname, makes a great first name. I’m a fan of using last names as first names (Donovan), but when you add “Storm”, a name that symbolizes chaos, you have a strong name that perfectly fits a man who
controls a horde of criminals.

YAY!!! The name just popped into my head when I read about the story and I was so excited when you chose Jackson Storm for your criminal. I love a good bad guy and the worst of the worst is the best. LOL Thanks so much, Chrys and good luck with this great series.

MY REVIEW

I live in Florida, so anything to do with a hurricane interests me. I have been through more than one hurricane, but unlike Beth in Hurricane Crimes, I have not been through a Category 5 hurricane like Sabrina. As if the storm isn’t enough, there is a murderer on the loose.

The evacuation order had been given, but Beth had nowhere to go and no way to get there, so she stocked up on necessities and hunkered down to weather it out.

As she watched the storm out her window, she saw the car slam into the tree. Of course, she had to go out and check on the driver. What would you have done?

Its not necessarily the wind and water that will kill you, but the blowing debris.

As the power struggled to stay on, she heard, Donovan Goldwyn – murder suspect.

Uh oh, he was here, in her home. What would you do? It’s almost like you have no choice but to play along. There is no one to help, no one to call, no one …

Would the storm affect your emotions and your libido…the danger, the adrenaline, the fear of death.

Chrys had me on a seesaw, yes he’s a murderer, no he’s not, yes he is, no he isn’t.

Chrys Fey does an excellent job describing Hurricane Sabrina and the destruction it brings in its wake. The ending is fantastic and I would wait out a hurricane with you, Chrys, any time.

This little novella has it all. A gorgeous cover, a captivating title, a hot guy and a not so defenseless woman stranded in a category five hurricane.

I picked this up on an Amazon free day and considered myself lucky.

After her car breaks down, Beth Kennedy is forced to stay in Florida, the target of Hurricane Sabrina. She stocks up supplies, boards up windows, and hunkers down to wait out the storm, but her plan unravels when she witnesses a car accident. Risking her life, she braves the winds to save the driver. Just when she believes they are safe, she finds out the man she saved could possibly be more dangerous than the severe weather.

Donovan Goldwyn only wanted to hide from the police, but the hurricane shoved his car into a tree. Now he’s trapped with a beautiful woman while the evidence that can prove his innocence to a brutal crime is out there for anyone to find.

As Hurricane Sabrina wreaks havoc, Beth has no other choice but to trust Donovan to stay alive. But will she survive, or will she become another hurricane crime?

MY REVIEW

Witch of Death by Chrys Fey is an awesome short of suspense, thrills, magic, witches and romance, wrapped up in a wonderful package.

Liberty Sawyer is called in by the police, when a magical murder occurs – a floating corpse and a spell cast by an evil, dark magic sorcerer bring her and Reid together.

She is a psychic, a witch to be exact. She takes no guff about whether you believe in her or not. She is a witch that hunts witches to be burned alive and has a gaze that can freeze a man in his tracks. Reid learns that first hand.

Detective Reid Sanders is a skeptic. Does he fight believing in her so much because he is in lust after Libby?

Chry’s Fey’s writing is sooooo good, that I will be reading anything she puts out!

Witch of Death is a short, but powerful read. Libby had me eating out of her hand from the first pages. The characters are well developed and got me so involved, I hated for the story to end. I want more, please.

Music is my constant muse when I’m writing. I have a list of songs I go to when I need to write romantic scenes and action scenes. There are also my go-to artists such as 30 Seconds to Mars, Sia, Evanescence, Imagine Dragons, and more.

Witch of Death originally had chapter titles that were deleted during the galley phases, and those chapter titles were actually names of songs that inspired those chapters. For fun, I’ll share the soundtrack for Witch of Death, so if you read the story, you can maybe look up the songs, too.
