I won a signed copy of Becoming Alpha (Alpha Girl #1) by Aileen Erin and a beautiful bookmark some time ago and just got around to reading it.

Check out this beautiful cover. Do you think it’s safe to take a walk in the woods?

MY 56

We walked across the lawn to the large brick house. A lilting beat flowed across the yard. I took a look down at my outfit – black skater dress, thin silver belt, flip-flops, thin silver scarf, and black over the elbow gloves – as my nerves started to reach an all time high. I smoothed my skirt down and centered the knot on my scarf as my nerves rose.

MY ONE SENTENCE REVIEW

Becoming Alpha by Aileen Erin has all the elements for  a great young adult story, danger, betrayal, supernatural creatures of all kinds, romance, confusion, a fight to the death, and I’d follow her flip flopping footsteps all day long.

I was so fortunate to be vacationing in Cape Cod, Mass, when Mr Wonderful and I found out that The Rolling Stones would play at the Grand Opening of Gillette Stadium, where the New England Patriots play.

It was September 5, 2002, and the house was rockin’.

Their concerts have come a long way since this one.

Today I am sharing The Rolling Stones 59 by the Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood.

This is a very large illustrated book filled with tons of goodies.

When I met Keith on Darford Station in 1961, having lost touch after beng at school together when we were very young, I immediately knew we shared a taste for great music. And soon we discovered that we both wanted to do more than just listen to it – we wanted to play music too. Going to the Ealing club and starting a band together, before joining up with Brian as the Rollin’ Stones and playing the Marquee Club in July 1962, we were pursuing a kind of dream, but it was a dream that was not yet fully clear i our minds. It was only after Bill and, soon after Charlie joined that we began to take seriously the possibility of being a band that got paid for playing the kid of music that very few others in Britain liked to play.

Because the books is filled with photos, I am sharing the first paragraph.

This next series of books probably needs no introduction…

Harry Potter by J K Rowling…

“Now you listen here, boy,” he snarled, “I accept there’s something strange about you, probably nothing a good beating wouldn’t have cured – and as for all this about your  parents, well, they were weirdos, no denying it, and the world’s better of without them in my opinion – asked for all they got, getting mixed up with these wizarding types – just what I expected, always knew they’d come to a sticky end-“

(Page 56 in hardcover, 1st American Edition, published 1998)

Book Beginnings

Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.

GOODREADS BLURB: Harry Potter’s life is miserable. His parents are dead and he’s stuck with his heartless relatives, who force him to live in a tiny closet under the stairs. But his fortune changes when he receives a letter that tells him the truth about himself: he’s a wizard. A mysterious visitor rescues him from his relatives and takes him to his new home, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

After a lifetime of bottling up his magical powers, Harry finally feels like a normal kid. But even within the Wizarding community, he is special. He is the boy who lived: the only person to have ever survived a killing curse inflicted by the evil Lord Voldemort, who launched a brutal takeover of the Wizarding world, only to vanish after failing to kill Harry.

Though Harry’s first year at Hogwarts is the best of his life, not everything is perfect. There is a dangerous secret object hidden within the castle walls, and Harry believes it’s his responsibility to prevent it from falling into evil hands. But doing so will bring him into contact with forces more terrifying than he ever could have imagined.

Full of sympathetic characters, wildly imaginative situations, and countless exciting details, the first installment in the series assembles an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.

Monday Mourning by Kathyr Reichs is another fabulous novel in the Temperance Brennan stand alone series.

This is the cover for my 1st edition hardback published in 2004.

As the tune played inside my head, gunfire exploded in the cramped underground space around me.

GOODREADS BLURB: The bones of three young women are unearthed in the basement of a Montreal pizza parlor, and forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan has unsolved murder on her mind as she examines the shallowly buried remains. Coming up against a homicide cop who is convinced the dead have been entombed on the site for centuries, Tempe perseveres, even with her own relationship with Detective Andrew Ryan at a delicate turning point. In the lab, the clean, well-perserved bones offer few clues. But when Carbon 14 confirms her hunch that these were recent deaths despite the antique buttons found near the bodies, Tempe’s probing must produce answers quickly to stop a killer whose grisly handiwork has seen the light of day.

Omerta by Mario Puzo is the conclusion of The Godfather series.

I don’t see the book jacket for my 1st edition hardback published in 2000. This one is close, except the dot is red, the background whiter and a novel is encased in shadow after Omerta.

The first bullet hit the Don square in the forehead. The second bullet tore out his throat. His blood spurted all over the sidewalk, showering yellow sunlight with pink drops.

(Page 56 in hardcover, published in 2000)

Book Beginnings

In the stone-filled village of Castellammare del Golfo, facing the dark Sicilian Mediterranean, a great Mafia Don lay dying. Vincenzo Zeno was a man of honor, who all his life had been loved for his fair and impartial judgment, his help to those in need, and his implacable punishment of those who dared to oppose his will.

GOODREADS BLURB: To Don Raymonde Aprile’s children he was a loyal family member, their father’s adopted “nephew.” To the FBI he was a man who would rather ride his horses than do Mob business. No one knew why Aprile, the last great American Don, had adopted Astorre Viola many years before in Sicily; no one suspected how he had carefully trained him … and how, while the Don’s children claimed respectable careers in America, Astorre Viola waited for his time to come.

Now his time has arrived. The Don is dead, his murder one bloody act in a drama of ambition and deceit — from the deadly compromises made by an FBI agent to the greed of two crooked NYPD detectives and the frightening plans of a South American Mob kingpin. In a collision of enemies and lovers, betrayers and loyal soldiers, Astorre Viola will claim his destiny. Because after all these years, this moment is in his blood …
