Would you want a super power? How To Start Your Own Country by Stephen Henning #stephenhenning

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I have been with Samantha and James Blake since the beginning. Their parents did their best to keep them safe, keep their identities hidden. Lolly is Sir Michaels’ daughter. She is responsible for many deaths, but, since, meeting James, she has done a one eighty.

Sir Michael is trying to recruit all the people with superhero powers to populate Liberation Island and has a flash drive with the names of many of those with superpowers, and those who may develop them later in life. His goal is to give them a save haven, to protect them from governments and people that would like to ‘own’ them for their own designs. It sounds like a good idea, but, I am leery. Is that the real reason? Does he have an ulterior motive?

I won’t tell you who has possession of the flash drive once it has been taken from Sir Michael. That would ruin the fun of you finding out for yourself, but there are those that would do almost anything to get it.

Samantha is missing. Is she alive? Dead? Does someone have her?

You can find out what the book is about by reading the synopsis, so I won’t go into that. I will tell you, Lolly has become my favorite character. I love a good bad guy, and she has definitely proven she is not to be messed with. No one approves of James and Lolly being together, especially with her background. It would be hard to think she could change from a blood thirsty killer to a young woman wanting to do the right thing and be with her boyfriend.

He is her conscience. Can love conquer all?

It all comes down to…who you can trust. Where can you be safe? Many ruthless people would love to keep them hostage, use them for their own gain. Money? Power? Weapons?

We shall see how it plays out in this mini series that is part of the Class Heroes series. So buckle up and hold on tight. I am sure there is a lot of action, danger and intrigue to come.

AMAZON SYNOPSIS

Freedom always has a price

How to Start Your Own Country is a mini series of three episodes within the overall Class Heroes book series. It continues the adventures of James and Samantha Blake, and a small group of people who have developed special abilities.

Previously, in Class Heroes….

Teenage twins Samantha and James Blake have developed superpowers following a bus explosion caused by pharma-tech mogul Sir Michael Rosewood.
Al Lester, known as the Alchemist, triggered nationwide riots in the UK by giving out ‘Super D’, a drug which temporarily gives users super strength.
Sir Michael, who’d been captured by the British security services, was rescued by his daughter Lolly.
Samantha and Al are both missing, presumed dead, following an attempt to kidnap them by the Russian mafia.
Sir Michael, reluctantly aided by Lolly, has established a small community for people with superpowers on an artificial island between Britain and France, where they continue their mission to find other people with abilities.
Deenpal Mander, a teenager with the power to heal people from any illness or injury, has escaped the clutches of a gang of evil people-traffickers, and has reached out to Sir Michael for help…

In How to Start Your Own Country Episode 1 “The Rise of Superhero Island”:

Sir Michael’s recruitment drive for superheroes is finally paying dividends, but a jealous rival threatens to sabotage his plans; James and Lolly’s ill-advised relationship heats up; Deen is terrified by the changes happening to his body; and the mystery surrounding Sam and Al’s disappearance is revealed.

ABOUT STEPHEN HENNING

Stephen Henning

I began writing the first Class Heroes book on my laptop in February 2011, but these stories have probably been continually playing in my head since I was aged five or six, when I would act them out with toys and with my friends. I then branched out into using pencils, colouring pens and paper, moving on to writing pads and then my first computer.

So, as you’ve probably gathered, I have always enjoyed making up stories and the super-hero genre has been one of my favourites.

The CV-type stuff is that I went to Sheffield Hallam University to study English. I then trained and briefly worked as a journalist in Salford. After that, I moved into publishing – which was great. An interesting and fun industry to be in and fascinating to see how books are put together and sold.

After that I started doing technical writing, which led me to start my own business with my friend and colleague Andrew Butters. My love of writing, generally, led me back to writing fiction. Our company, Elucidox Ltd, publishes the Class Heroes books.

If you want to know a bit more about me, what kind of super powers I have and the kind of super villains I have to tangle with on a daily basis, then feel free to watch Rage. This is a short film, that took a long time to make. It’s a simple day in my life :-). Actually it’s just a fun movie that I made with the very kind help of some of my best mates. We had a laugh doing it, hope you like it too. And if you do, then why not explore the super world of the Class Heroes books?

Superheroes – Jesus of the North by Stephen Henning #stephenhenning

.

Stephen Henning has been writing his Class Heroes novels since 2011 and I have been with him all the way. I have come to love these characters and am always eager to meet a new superhero and learn of his powers.

Jesus of the North (Class Heroes Book 6)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Stephen Henning has created some wonderful characters and scenarios in his Class Heroes series and I think that many teens and young adults, especially, would love meeting them….and I have too.

From life experiences, Deenpal Mander believes that life is governed by chance.

Deenpal hears of Sir Michael Rosebud, who is offering anyone with superpowers a $100,000 check and a home on Liberation Island, a safe haven from those who would want to exploit them. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? I feel, if something is too good to be true, BEWARE. You’ll have to read the book to find out, but…

I feel so bad for Deepal. He is a young man, naive, homeless, no family left, with a superpower that puts him in danger…and, of course, he is going to run into someone that has that exact agenda and uses every wile he has to possess Deenpal, as if he is merchandise to be bought and sold.

He meets Richard Ratchett in Manchester and…I don’t feel real good about this.

I feel a sense of danger throughout the story, and, like Deenpal, am having a hard time figuring out who to trust. I worry for him and am eager to see what Stephen Henning has in store for him. Chantelle was a wonderful surprise. Sometimes we can all be too quick to judge.

I love the moments of paying it forward.

As I got closer to the end, I kept checking how many pages were left. I wondered how he was going to bring this story to a close. Would there be a cliffhanger? NO.

Each book has given me a wonderful glimpse into the fabulous characters and their superhero world, all the while drawing me in further. He does wrap each of his stories up,so I feel they could stand alone, but isn’t it always best to start a series from the beginning?

Stephen Henning ended Jesus of the North in a good place, leaving me eagerly anticipating the next story, How To Start You Own Country. Hmmmm…..

AMAZON SYNOPSIS

Deenpal Mander arrives in Manchester (UK), to attend some very special X-Factor-style auditions, which have been organised by Sir Michael Rosewood to try and find people with super powers. His special ability brings him to the attention of crooked construction boss Richard Ratchett, and puts him in danger from the world of organized crime. Can Deen find a way to escape an evil people-trafficking network? And if he does, is accepting Sir Michael’s friendship really the salvation that he thinks it is?

Class Heroes – Hearts and Minds by Stephen Henning #stephenhenning

I have been with the Class Heroes by Stephen Henning since the beginning and am so happy to be back with them again. Lolly has become my favorite superhero because I have a love/hate relationship with her.

Hearts and Minds (Class Heroes #5)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

It has been a long time since I have been with the Class Heroes series by Stephen Henning. I have loved these teenage superheroes, watching them grown and learn about their powers and life in general.

Lolly is an exceptional character and has become my favorite. She is mean, evil, and now that she has a boyfriend, she is beginning to see things in a different light. She has the ability to control fire and I wonder what will become of her.

Her father, now I am not so sure he can be redeemed. He has the power to manipulate people int doing what he wants them to do. I wonder….does he use it on Lolly?

It’s been a while since Book IV, London Belong To the Alchemist, and Hearts and Minds picks up where it left off, and even though it has been some time, I had no trouble picking up where I left off.

There are moment of suspense where she is in serious danger, but, hey, she’s the main character. You wouldn’t kill her off, would you Stephen?

In Hearts and Minds, Lolly has reunited with her father after he spent nine months in prison. She struggles to find her own identity. I don’t trust the man at all, as they search for a missing girl who may have super powers.

Lolly, Lolly, Lolly….BEWARE! I feel a sense of danger, very subtle, yet always there and I don’t know who she can trust. The story doesn’t end here, so if we are looking for closure, we will have to wait.

GOODREADS BLURB

Sixteen-year-old Lolly Rosewood, the cold and calculating anti-hero from the Class Heroes series, is back in a new, thrilling and dangerous mission.
Lolly and her father, Sir Michael, are in Montana on the track of a kidnapped girl — Erica Barrington — who they believe has superpowers. But there are other people hunting for the missing girl. Can Lolly and her father find Erica in time?
This is the fifth book in the Class Heroes series. It’s a journey of discovery — and more secrets — for father and daughter. Lolly has always trusted her father implicitly, followed his orders, and shared his goal to reach out to other people with special abilities. This mission to Montana is a new experience for Lolly as she battles to shake off the shackles of being seen as a little girl in her father’s eyes, and establish a new relationship with him as an equal.
Warning: Contains Violence, Death, Sexual References, Dark Humour and some Upper Class British Snobbery 🙂

Superheroes – London Belongs to the Alchemist by Stephen Henning

Stephen Henning’s Class Heroes is a hit!

I eagerly anticipate each novel in the series and can hardly wait to see what adventure Samantha and James will be on this time.

London Belongs to the Alchemist is Book IV of the Class Heroes series.

While the city descends into riots, the twins’ bond is tested as they’re torn between their loyalty to each other and their new relationships. And in the shadows, a gangland drug lord will stop at nothing to get his hands on the twins, DJ Alchemy and the precious Super D.

MY REVIEW for London Belongs to the Alchemist, Book IV

Spoiler Alert: This is Book IV of the Class Heroes series. I don’t believe there is anything here that will ruin the earlier books, just wanted to make you aware this is book IV.

The cover reminds me of the Spiderman and Hulk comics I used to read.

I was hooked on this series from the first book, A Class Apart. Stephen Henning has the ability to spin a yarn and create a fantasy world that I get lost in, not wanting to come back to reality. I have been watching Smallville (the TV series about Superman) in the early morning hours, so I can clearly see the characters and their superpowers in action.

This is a young adult novel, but I feel heroes come in all shapes and sizes and this is so much fun, that all ages with fall in love with Samantha and James.

My visualization of the characters was pretty darn close! SamJamesPortrait

Great job of ‘showing’ me with words.

James and Samantha are 14 year old twins.

The twins have been staying with their grandparents since the accident that had started it all months ago. They managed to survive the exploding bus crash and their zombie classmates who had tried to eat them. The experience had changed them, giving them superpowers they were working hard to keep secret.

The characters have all the angst of normal teenagers, but their super powers will take their problems to a higher, more dangerous level. Their biggest danger was being discovered. Who knew what would happen, who would be after them and for what reasons. I wrote this as if it is real. I can’t help but laugh at myself. So good, I am in it side by side with them.

They are back in London now and heading to school for the first time since the accident. The principal had arranged a party to ease them back into a normal world. They knew better than to leave the party, but they did it anyway. They are teenagers after all. I know no good will come of this.

TheAlchemistThey meet the DJ of Alchemy. He hosts impromptu parties, spinning out tunes and passing out the super drug. He can leap tall buildings. Samantha and James already know about the super drug. It gives the user temporary superpowers, but the backlash could be fatal.

Samantha’s powers – super strength, rapid healing and controlling fire.

James powers – telekinesis and the ability to teleport.

Nicky Carro is a successful businessman. He owns nightclubs and casinos. He is involved in the drug trade with Russians. I can already anticipate the problems that is going to cause. They are violent and have no respect for human life.

Lolly, of course, Lolly will make an appearance and I have been waiting for her. When Lolly did enter the picture, I was floored by what she wanted. There has to be something else going on. Her dad is locked up and she is on the run. She is dangerous. Her dad is a mass murderer, a psychopath and has the power of persuasion. Was she different without him? Doing anything to make Lolly angry, you’d better beware. She will show no mercy. Even though she’s a very bad girl, there’s something about her that makes me want to help her out. Good writing does that for me. Makes me feel empathy for the bad guy, with the hope that redemption is possible.

Super D, a crooked casino owner, Russian drug dealers, the DJ of Alchemy passing out drugs and preaching anarchy, a hormonal psychopath with superpowers. viral marketing – a virus that controls any phone it’s uploaded to, gangsters and extortionists. Is there a bad guy I missed? 😀

Stephen’s writing is fantastic with pacing that makes me race through the pages. I breathe a sigh of relief, as I am allowed to catch my breath before we are off and running again.

The only complaint I have with Stephen Henning’s writing is I want more. The Class Heroes could be a TV or movie series.

I can see more stories unfolding in the future. The kids have some growing up to do and I wonder what the future has in store for them.

Stephen includes a little humor and leaves me with a giant cliffhanger making me scream for more.

I received London Belongs to the Alchemist from the author in return for an honest, unbiased review.

My Review of Where’s Lolly by Stephen Henning
.
I am so happy to see that Stephen Henning has written a book for the villainess. It is unusual that I become so enamored by a “bad guy”, but Lolly has my full attention. I can’t help but feel some empathy for her in this novella. With her background, it is not surprising that she turned out the way she did, but she is a human being. There is a heart, though it seems to be buried pretty deep. Can anyone reach her, make a connection?
.
She is on the run, with only one person to turn to. But, can he, will he be able to help her?
.
I was walking through the words, strolling along. Before I knew it, I was racing through the pages, so curious to see the outcome. Images flashed through my mind – Lolly holding the man by the heels, threatening to drop him off the roof – scaling walls and creating fire with her super powers.
.
I love it! Stephen Henning had my attention from the beginning to the end. Lots of action and emotion in such a few pages. I think this novella will entice you to read further and discover the adventures of the superheroes, James and Sam. Maybe you will even develop some empathy for Lolly, as I did. After all, she is only an unhappy teenager with superpowers. How bad can it be?

Simon took Asha to Witches Wood to scare her.

They sat on a bench by the river.

They noticed the bench was dedicated to Katherine Bethany Blake, who drowned in the river in 1987.

Simon thought everything was going great, a little kissing, a little touching. Then Asha screamed.

A girl stepped towards them, dripping water from her clothes and hair, covered in blood.

In a blink, she was gone.

This fictional news report relates to Class Heroes book II, What Happened in Witches Wood. Class Heroes is a series of thriller books for teenagers and adults.

***Spoiler Alert***  I do not believe there is anything here that will spoil A Class Apart, Book I of the Class Heroes series, so feel free to read on.

The cover speaks to me, a girl in the woods. Simple, yet lends an aura of mystery.

This is the second book of the Class Heroes series . They tell the story of teenage superheroes, James and Sam, and the people that want what they have and what they would do to get it.

I liked that Stephen had more than one storyline going. James and Sam would have their trials and tribulations with G-Netik and Lolly. But what about Katherine? Who is she and why does Sam feel the need to solve the mystery?

James and Sam’s parents had told them to never go into the woods. Do you think they would be able to resist? Tell a teenager not to do something and it usually creates more curiosity and sometimes a desire more urgent than was there before.

Sir Rosewood is a respected businessman who is used to getting whatever he wants. His daughter, Lolly has learned all his evil lessons. The corruption in the upper echelons has allowed him so much leeway in his abuse of power that no one has foreseen how far he will go. He thought he had the right to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.

As the people gather to party in the woods while looking for ghosts, it made me think of the Squatchers. If you have never see this Discovery show, check it out and prepare to laugh your way through the woods with the squatching crew as they hunt for Bigfoot.

Stephen describes Sam running. She wasn’t supposed to be doing it, because it cannot be explained. His description made me think of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman. I can hear the theme music playing now. I love it when I can relate the story to a movie or TV show, making it easier to visualize the scene, as if it is a mini movie playing through my mind.

Sometimes Book II in a series can fall a little short and I felt What Happened in Witches Wood did not let me down. Action packed, multiple storylines, characters I’m loving and hating and I am unable to put the book down. What more can I ask for?

Where’s Lolly? This villainess is still on the loose and I aim to hunt her down.

I love this series and am so happy to know that Lolly has her own story coming up next. It will be free on Amazon on January 15, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 16.

Monday Mini #7 – A Class Apart by Stephen Henning

A Class Apart, by Stephen Henning is the first book in the Class Heroes series of thrillers for teenagers and adults alike. I will be spotlighting this series this week, so be sure and check back to see what’s happening with the superhero teenagers, James and Sam.

I read this book quite a while ago, before I started blogging. I am sharing a mini review now, because I be will publishing my review for the second book of the Class Heroes series, What Happened in Witches Wood tomorrow. You can see it HERE. No spoilers.

Where’s Lolly, the third book in the Class Heroes series is being released and will be free on Amazon on January 15, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 16. (Follow the links below to check it out on Goodreads or click on the covers for Amazon.)

All I can say is WOW! I was blown away. I read it straight through, it took me six hours. I devoured it. The cover was interesting and caught my eye. I really liked the clean, crisp, simplistic look. The cover and the title were both descriptive of the book. It was very well written and the story flowed smoothly. The suspense built from the beginning and continued to the last page. A lot of times, the books by authors from the UK can be difficult to read and the flow can be interrupted by the phraseology. Definitely not so here. The characters were both likeable and hateable. I loved Samantha for her goodness and naivety. I loved James for all his heroism and willingness to risk his own life, but he left me wondering what he would become in the future. I even felt empathy and sadness for the “villain”. I can hardly wait until I can get my hands on the next book. A Class Apart would make an interesting movie that would be enjoyed by people of all ages, just like the book. I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Teenage twins James and Samantha Blake are caught up in a seemingly random terrorist bombing while on a school trip. Many of their friends are killed. When the twins wake up in hospital, their lives have changed forever.

The doctors are amazed at the speed with which James and Sam recover from their injuries and, when the twins begin to exhibit extraordinary powers, it is obvious that something incredible has happened.

As James and Sam attempt to overcome their fears and embrace their new abilities, a series of murders and disappearances start plaguing the hospital. The twins aren’t the only ones with special abilities and it becomes apparent that someone is coming for them.

Will James and Sam be able to survive the nightmare into which they have been plunged? Who, or what, is behind the murders at the hospital? And was that terrorist incident quite so random after all?
