MY REVIEW

WOO HOO! Another fabulous thriller featuring the gun toting former assassin Leine Basso. I love this strong, which is putting it mildly, female character. She is a former government assassin, now working with SHEN, an antitrafficking organization. She shows the scumbags of the world no mercy. I love that she has a trophy wall, even though it is a little serial killer creepy.

SHEN – Stop Human Enslavement Now

I think things are about to change for Leine, when she meets Jinn, a child of the Marketplace. She is like a ghost, one minute you see here, the next she’s gone. She is feisty, clever and Leine has her work cut out for her winning her trust. I have some feelings for Jinn and I wonder….

Slave auctions. Oh man, I hate to even think about this, especially because I know it goes on to this day. DV Berkom does her research, so her stories read all too real.

I love how, laying on her back, in her most DIRE STRAITS, Leine thinks of Carl Sagan saying, there were “billions and billions of stars in the galaxy.” I used to watch that show. It’s DV adding the small things that makes her books hit all my buttons, making me want more.

The Leopard has come out of her retirement and made her ‘DARK RETURN’ to her old life.

Hmmm…is Kadeem Hakim a good guy or a bad guy? DV Berkom’s not telling, at least, not yet.

Bullets and RPGs are flying, but Leine feels the need to save everyone. Guilt drives her to move heaven and earth to get those who dare to cross her line. If you think you can tell her no, think again. Leine enjoys meting out her own punishment to traffickers and terrorists. She is driven, she is aggressive, she is…

L – oyal

E – nterprising

I – ntense

N – ecessary

E – lusive

Every time she thought of her man, Santiago Jenson, and LAPD detective, she put aside that he fought within the law and she crossed the line, walking to the beat of her own drum. I love this characters so much, I just hope Santa can accept her as she is, not perfect, but definitely someone you want at your side during the bad times.

The intrigue and suspense unravel as the words splash across the pages. DV Berkom’s books are so intense and Dark Return only confirms for me the huge amount of work she puts into research, making the book read as if it is a true story. This page turning thriller is filled with nonstop action, characters that stole my heart and I love that I don’t know where I’m going until I get there. Not all will survive, but the journey is more than worth it.

GOODREADS BLURB

A former assassin, battling her demons. A sinister enemy, determined to destroy her. A wily street kid, caught in the middle.

Former assassin and SHEN operative Leine Basso is fresh off an assignment rescuing an American teenager from a terrorist group in Libya when she thwarts the murder of a street kid in Tripoli. Leine agrees to help the girl find her family, but must first visit a refugee camp in the desert where there are disturbing reports of mysterious abductions.

Leaving the camp, Leine comes under a surprise attack–but only a handful of people knew her true mission. Who has betrayed her? The more she discovers about the abductions, the more of a target she becomes, forcing her to revisit a dark and violent past she thought she’d left behind. But it’s easy–too easy to fall back to her old ways.

And it could get her killed.

Will she be able to survive a dark return?

ABOUT DV BERKOM

Image of D.V. Berkom DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the author of two popular thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-*ss female characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

Raised in the Midwest, she received her BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Many, many cross-country moves (and several years) later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, an ex-chef-turned contractor, and writes every chance she gets.

  1. This really is sadly something that needs to be talked and discussed about more since it really is a real thing right now. This sounds like it would be both a good read and a hard one. Wonderful review for it!

    • Thanks so much. It is a scary thought. I watch a lot of crime shows, true and false…and a lot of ID TV. When I think how much I used to wander by myself, shooting photos in some off the beaten path places, I consider myself lucky nothing happened to me.

  2. A great review – and given the grim reality that provides the backdrop to this intense thriller, also a book that punches above its weight. Thank you, Sherry:)

  3. Holy cow! That’s a fabulous review, Sherry! I was organizing my list of authors and she’s on it. I have several of her books and they will be read and reviewed this year. It’s long overdue.

    • Thanks Laura. Glad to hear she’s on your review list. I think you will love her work and I look forward to reading your reviews. Happy reading!
