A Tag team Event – Is this the end of Earth? Precipice by Kevin J. Howard – Review and Giveaway

“Are you going to give it a rest or do I have to smack you in the balls?”

Had me laughing until……….

Beth and Sebastian were cruising on the largest ship to ever sail. They heard the alarms going off and ran to the balcony, only to watch as the rogue wave washed over them.

Does something have to end for something to begin?

Travis felt so much guilt over leaving Christine and Logan, his wife and son. He, along with the other members of his team – Morgan Ellis, mechanic, Christina Perez, combat trainer (the only woman at the facility), TJ, equipment specialist, and Sean Jeffries, pilot – were sent to Mars. Travis had made the decision for the team, go to Mars instead of receiving a death sentence. Mars wasn’t a prison, but it might as well have been.

Travis was called in for his monthly evaluation with Dr. Hoffman. He was asked about his coworkers and the facility, the normal questions. Travis told him that he missed his family terribly and Hoffman told him he would be allowed to talk with them.

Annie wanted to look her best when she saw Travis today. The only comm link to Mars from Earth was at TransWorld, the company that built the place on Mars. It was a three and a half hour drive from home. On the way, she thought of how life would be, knowing Travis would never be coming home.

Contact with Earth became sporadic, then non-existent, he began to prepare for the worst. Andrews warned his people, the men at the mine were prisoners, no matter what anyone said.

“Men can be like dogs if put in the right situation. Obedient, loyal. But when the chips are down and they feel threatened, you bet your balls they’ll turn on you.”

Annie awoke to the latest news on Earth. The ozone layer was almost gone, high acid levels made the ocean toxic, earthquakes were ripping the ground out from under them and releasing the unthinkable. Would humans be the next animal to become extinct?

I couldn’t take my eyes off this video.

Annie and Logan make it to TransWorld and Annie is able to contact Travis on Mars. As he and his team watch the horrific images on screen, they wonder what would meet them if they manage to return to Earth. Would it be a fate worse than death?

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos   5 STARS – Would Buy It For Them (lol)

If you happen to notice I changed the STARS from 4 to 5, it is because I had a personal emergency and had to publish and run. I found I had hit the wrong button, so I corrected my error. Sorry, Kevin, because this book really deserves the 5 STAR rating.

Kevin J. Howard is an excellent writer with a vivid imagination and otherworldly stories to tell. As soon as I saw the cover, I knew I wanted this book. Beautiful and intriguing. The title, Precipice, evokes the feeling of impending doom. Knowing Kevin’s mind, I knew there was an intriguing adventure waiting between the “pages”.

His descriptions of the end of the world and life on Mars remind me of H. G. Wells and his visions of the future. Kevin describes Travis wearing front loaders, made me think of a scene in Avatar. You will have to read the book to know what he is talking about, but who is to say what tools will be developed in the future.

Water on Mars was recycled urine. Is that a thing of the future? MMMM Something to look forward to?

I loved all the detail, so starting out kind of slow is fine by me. Once it had me drawn and quartered, I found I couldn’t escape its clutches. The action came from all directions. There was so much going on and new storylines kept popping up.

And what will happen after we destroy the Earth, using up all the available resources? Ozone layers about gone, oceans toxic, the ground shaking – vanishing beneath our feet.

“Humanity! The most lethal virus unleashed upon the universe.”

Kevin tells us about Christine seeing a chimp at the Chicago Zoo when she was 15, but now, chimps, polar bears and elephants were only seen as photos in books.

The Mars Project is run by Trans World Incorporated. It is an off world facility, preparing the way for mining and the colonization of Mars. Is it preparation for when the world becomes uninhabitable?

Does any of this have a familiar ring to it?

Ever wonder if it has happened before? Maybe we came here from somewhere else.

I love strong women protagonists and Annie is one.

“Take your goddamn gun out of my son’s face.”

“I said now, before I rip off your fucking balls and beat you with them.”

Oh man, I was so bummed when I reached the end. I wanted so badly to keep on reading. How long until Book II? I’m thinking it will knock my socks off. So, bring it on!!

  2. Great review. I already put this book on my TBR list when I visited Laura’s post. I love the tag-team event. Thanks, Sherry.

    • I saw you there Janna. Thanks for stopping by. This is a great book and I think Book II is going to be even better. I can hardly imagine where he is going to take this. It always amazes me how authors come up with these scenarios. Makes for some great reading. ^_^

  3. Thanks for having the giveaway. I think it would be fun and interesting to colonize another planet.

    • Happy to share a great book. I love your adventurous spirit. Good luck.

  4. I guess it would depends on how Iong I would have to be gone. I would definitely go if I could take my kids because I don’t think I could go and leave my kids behind.

    • Sure. Take the whole family. lol I know it would be hard to leave behind your loved ones. Think there will be a shuttle some day, selling seats for families to colonized new planets? Why not?

  5. Oh my, that video of the tsunami is utterly terrifying. I began to feel worried for the photographer. You don’t expect the water to go that high, and then it just keeps on coming and coming.
I’d be willing to go to Mars, but only if my entire family was able to go with me!

    • I was looking for something to describe the devastation of Earth in the book, and this seemed to fit the bill, except add to that every catastrophe you can think of happening at once. I am really curious to see where book two goes.

Sure, take the family, make it a vacation. lol

  6. Another amazing review Sherry. The tsunami video was terrifying.

I love doing these tag team events with you. We are so different in what catches us about a story!

    • Right back atcha. I kept looking for something to describe the events that were happening. I couldn’t quit watching this, so I plugged it in.

I am always curious to see how you approach the same book when we do these tag teams. We like a lot of the same books, but we do come at them in different ways.

I can hardly wait to see what happens in Book II.

  7. Colonize another planet? Life experiences don’t get more “novel” than that. I would definitely do it!

    • I love your attitude! I would like to think I would have the courage to do it.

    • Come on board and buckle up, because it’s sure to be a bumpy ride. LOL

  8. No, I probably wouldn’t not now at my age, lol. Maybe when I was younger.

    penumbrareads(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Do we become less adventurous with age or are we just happy with out lives? Happy Reading.

  9. I would love to try living on another planet but I would have to take my family with me, I don’t trust them on their own!

This book sounds great! Thanks for brining it to my attention 😉

  10. I think I would jump at the chance, but only if my family could go with me. It would be amazing to see another world. I would also like to thank everyone for their awesome comments, and I look forward to signing a copy of my novel for the lucky winner. Best of luck to everyone!!

    • Most people feel the same way about their family.

Thanks Kevin for stopping by and for offering up a great giveaway. Everyone loves a signed copy and some swag. ^_^

  11. I would if I could take my family and friends with, along with some items like books. And if I had a way of getting around other than walking, too many issues with my legs to do a lot of walking.

    robertkrone@gmail.com

    • Hey, it’s Mars. Nobody is walking anywhere. lol Take the family, take the friends – You’ll be there for a while. ^_^

  13. Unfortunately, I have to agree with Penumbra. With my collection of physical issues I would be a dreg on the colony. In my younger days I would have jumped at the opportunity. Right now I just couldn’t do it; besides, I’d HAVE to take my dog along!

      • NASA sent dogs up in orbit before they sent a human up. They figured if something went wrong, they’d rather lose a dog than a human. Personally, I would rather they had used cats! 😉

        • LOL. Me too. I think I remember them sending up a Chimp, or maybe that was the Russians. Nice to see you stopping by Lee.

          • It’s always a pleasure! But it seems that every time I stop by, my TBR list grows by at least one more book.

          • Hi Lee. Good to see you. Happy you like the book choices. I would have to be a Vampire and be immortal to be able to read all the books I want. lol

  14. So glad to have you back! Missed you! Looking forward to more of your posts. I have a copy of Kevin’s ‘Precipice’ and looking forward to reading it. So I won’t be entering the giveaway and give someone else the chance to win, but I wanted to say hello and welcome back!

    Lily @ Bookluvrs Haven

    • Thanks so much Lily. I am VERY happy to be back and appreciate you coming by. I really enjoyed Precipice and can hardly wait to get my hands on Book II. I think it will crank up even more, if that is possible. Thanks again for you nice words and I look forward to talking at you. ^_^

  15. As long as I could take my family & my critters as well as some type of Lunar vehicle to enable me to get from point A to point B, I wouldn’t mind going at all. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  16. As long as I could take my family with me, I would definitely take the opportunity to colonize another planet. I think it would an amazing thing to experience.
Your review makes me want to read these books even more. I marked it on my TBR on GR from Laura’s site and I can’t wait to read it.
Thanks for the fun giveaways 🙂

    • Thanks Michelle. Most people want to take their family and I think it would be the only way for it to be successful. I loved this book and was really getting into it, then The End. I can hardly wait to read Book II. I think it is going to be as good or better. Good luck and Happy Reading.

  17. Hmmm. There’s the thought that someone has to do it; but the reality is that it is a tough road. I would require some serious medical professionals, which I know would already be there. And my dogs MUST go with me, as well as my parents, husband and children. Others, I think should have their personal choice, but my immediate family I’d probably want around me, since I’d not be coming back in this lifetime. I’m not sure I’d be an asset, so I might want to let those who have more to offer a new colony go before me. I should think of what’s best for the future.

    • I say, take them all. I would think we need everything. Families, pets….And an assortment of people. Just think if it was colonized only with geniuses and egotists. Who would do the daily work. I wouldn’t be much of an asset unless you needed a reader, blogger, photographer and piddler. ^_^

  18. It depends on if I could take my love with me. And maybe also what kind of place I’d be going to. I wouldn’t like someplace like in The Abyss, I’d have to kill someone. But if it was someplace like a giant bubble with “outdoor” space and lots of light and room and music and happy people, then I think I’d be game. Oooooo, makes me nervous just thinking about it.

    • LOL. You are funny. Heck yeah, take your love. We wouldn’t want you unhappy. You sound adventurous and ready to go. ^_^

    • Yeah, I kinda feel the same way. It is pretty hard to get me to leave my little slice of paradise I call home. ^_^

  19. Hell yes!!!!!! As long as I can take my dogs with me! 🙂 new start in a VERY new place what’s not to love bout that idea!

    • Awesome. You move to the front of the line! I am a dog lover too, so I wouldn’t want you to leave the critters behind. ^_^

  20. I would most definitely go to live on Mars as long as I can take my family and my cat!!!!

    • I say, bring them. I want everyone happy and excited to be there, if it’s up to me. ^_^

    • Bravo! You are the first one to go no matter what. Kudos for your bravery. You, too, can go to the front of the line. LOL

  21. Yes, if I had a chance I would settle a colony off of Earth. It sounds exciting exploring something completely new! Being a doctor or a scientist on a new world could be fun?

    • An adventurous spirit. Super. I am sure doctors and scientists would be in very high demand. Welcome aboard.

    • Super cool. Would need a vet for pets, and whatever other critters that are already there?, and a writer to keep the youngsters minds occupied. You are in. ^_^

  22. My answer is no. I’m another one who is too old, lol. But the reason for me isn’t being less adventurous or physical hardship, I think as you go through life you build up a collection of people, places, and things that are important to you. I have a lot more to lose now than I did when I was 20.

    msigmond@mindspring.com

    • I don’t know if I would ever be brave enough or curious enough to go to another planet, but kudos to everyone that would. I am old enough now and happy in my life, so unless I win the lottery, I am content right here. ^_^

  23. When I was a kid, that was my dream! Now I am pushing 50, hate change and have never flown in an airplane! But it is super exciting to think of pioneering on a whole new planet, an opportunity to start over. Looking forward to reading the book.

    • Great dreams. Maybe that is why you are the author and I am the reader. I hate flying and since I’ve moved south, most places I want to go to we drive. I love road trips. I would watch on TV and the internet while the others go. Oh, and I hope someone would be sure to write about it so I can read it. lol

  24. Wow! Love the concept of the book. And heck yeah I’d help colonize another planet. Think of all the amazing things you would see and do before anyone else. The struggles, the triumphs. Ok I’m done. He he!!

    • Welcome aboard. I used to sit and watch the launches to outer space and be dumbfounded. It was so hard to relate to. Then I would watch the shuttle, the space station….It constantly amazes me. Good luck.

  25. Hell yes! I would love the adventure and I am a space nut… shhh just a secret because I’m a Paranormal author, but I relished space since… Star Trek… I mean the 1963 Star Trek. I loved, loved, loved it! I hope I win! Lots of love, Emily

  26. Hi Emily. You crack me up. I can keep your secret. lol I love your enthusiasm. Glad you are joining us. Wishing you lots of luck!!

  27. thanks for the giveaway, the book sounds great. I think going to another planet would be a great adventure, but i’m to much of a coward.. I’d worry about crashing or running out of air on the way…. or ending up stranded on the planet unable too get back too earth. I’m too paranoid and to many things could go wrong. I would pass unless earth was dying and it was my last chance at survival.
    Forgottenpaige@gmail.com

    • Hi Scout. The more I think about it, the more I’m with you. I’m old enough to stand back and let the younger and more adventurous have at it. ^_^

  28. I don’t think I could go to Mars, I am afraid of heights ! LoL But I would love to hear about it if I had brave friends who would go and send me pictures and tell me all about it.

    • LOL That’s funny Sheri. I’m with you. I’ll kick back and do my reading, blogging…..and happily await the photos. Good luck.
