A curse, reincarnation, familiars, a battle between good and evil, Witches by Kathryn Meyer Griffith is loaded with many witch things that tease and titillate your paranormal and supernatural desires.

I have been watching Charmed (a TV series) reruns for a long time now, so it is easy to visualize all the going on, from familiars to scrying to all the powers needed for the battle coming Amanda’s way.

Amanda is a good witch and a good person, lonely since the death of her husband. She has her family and some friends in her isolated surroundings and she will need them. The selfless love she spreads and gives to others freely, asking for nothing in return makes me feel she deserves only the best.

The familiars are faithful companions and can be amusing at time. I couldn’t help but laugh at Tibby, a mouse familiar. I can see him throwing his little paws in the air in frustration.

It will be Amanda and her familiar, Amadeus, against the diabolical cult that is killing the residents of Canaan. She is a bit naive, unwilling to believe the danger that stalks her and I want to be with her, fighting at her side, making things right for her.

The witch hunt puts a target on her back and it is worse than she thought. The battle between good and evil will take all she has to survive.

The sense of evil and foreboding of what is to come was present from the opening pages. The grisly murders, the impromptu storms, and the death and destruction run rampant in Canaan.

I didn’t see the direction Kathryn would take for this unusual witch’s tale and the world I would be in. Her vivid descriptions and detailed, complex characters make me love and hate them…but Amanda…

The terrible things Kathryn puts her through come alive on the pages. She is not afraid to make her characters suffer, sometimes killing them off, making me love her writing, because I have to stay on my toes and be ready for the surprises she will spring on me.

The writing is outstanding, but I am not surprised by Kathryn’s ability to bring this magical world to life, making me devour the words, unable to stop, wanting to know…

Kathryn Meyer Griffith takes WITCHES to a whole new level, keeping the suspense rising, the pacing constant. I am anxious, curious, surprised, amazed, fearful, and terrified as I read of Amanda and those around her, as demons and black magic rise and good magic fights back.

I do not want to spoil the fun, though I took a lot of notes, I discarded most of them.

I loved Amanda’s belief that trees could tell the past…and sometimes the future. Amanda is a white witch and a Guardian. When she talks of poofing in and out, it made me think of Charmed, the TV show, and orbing. Because I became familiar to the supernatural world through Charmed and Supernatural, it enabled me to visualize so much of the story almost making it seem real.

The characters have one foot in the real world and the other in the supernatural world. Talk about having a tough life.

A feeling of something terrible coming and not all my friends will make it out alive hovers over the pages. Kathryn makes me fall in love with her characters…then she kills them off, so be forewarned.

“You look like a black smurf.” Amanda tells her sister, Rebecca, who is dressed all in black.

“And you, Amanda darling, look like the good witch Glinda from the Wizard of Oz in that cream colored outfit.” They chitchat as they get ready for ‘the party.’

The last time she’d followed her sister into a crowd of witches, she’d ended up drinking a little too much and flying races on fake broomsticks. I can picture it with the great writing that takes me to that special place I love to dwell.

Kathryn Meyer Griffith has a way with words, bringing her characters and their world to life in vivid detail. WOW! Loaded with action, suspense, creativity, world building, and character development that had me eating it up.

It may be possible for Witches II to stand alone, but I would definitely recommend starting at the beginning. The story is told, but could there be a Witches III?

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Witches II by Kathryn Meyer Griffith.

100_8628Since childhood I’ve been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over forty-five years ago now, and have had twenty-six (six romantic horror, four thrillers, three horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and eight murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from many traditional publishers since 1984. But since 2012 I’ve gone into self-publishing in a big way; and upon getting some of my older books’ full rights back for the first time in 33 years, have self-published all of them along with my newer novels. My four Dinosaur Lake novels and four Spookie Town Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts Beneath Us and Witches Among Us) are my best-sellers.

I’ve been married to Russell for thirty-nine years; have a son and two grandchildren and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois. We have a quirky cat, Sasha, and the three of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.

  1. If you love witches as much as I do, this is one double book series that you will want in your hands! I absolutely LOVED IT!

    • Absolutely. Hits all my buttons and I cannot recommend it strongly enough. Kept me turning the pages!!!

  2. Thank you Sherry (as always) for being one of my best cheerleaders and fans! You have no idea how much I treasure that. SO HAPPY you LOVED Witches II….after 24 years I wasn’t sure I still “had it”. You know…I actually originally wrote and published Witches in 1993 as a mass market Zebra paperback BEFORE Charmed even came out. Many people thought that maybe Charmed was slightly based on my book….hmmm. But I did write it before the TV show. I want to answer my own question just for the fun of it. If you had the chance to go into a REAL HAUNTED HOUSE, would you, and what would you take inside with you? No, if I had a choice, I wouldn’t go into a real haunted house. I don’t want no ghosts pestering me…BUT IF I DID GO IN I’d take a gallon of holy water, a machine gun with blessed bullets and a…lighter (if all else failed, he, he). Halloween Bonfire!!!! And if Witches II sells well I might someday write a third. Right now I’ve started a 5th Spookie Town Murder Mystery. HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!!

    • I love that you answered your own question. 🙂 Sounds like a plan…can I come with? I remember you mentioning you wrote Witches before Charmed came out. Makes me wonder too….I’ll have to check how many Spooky Towns I’ve read. I know I haven’t read all of them. Do they need to be read in order? Witches II ended at a great place, but I will surely miss my friends if there is no more. 🙁

      • Yes, it would be better if you read the 4 Spookie Town books in order (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts beneath Us and Witches Among Us)…I think it lets you build feelings for the main characters and then feel more when they have troubles, etc. And perhaps one day I will write Witches III….24 years from now when I am around 91. Grin.

  3. I’m sharing my review on Halloween day. I agree, this is such a fantastic story. Love this series and sure enjoy all of Katherine’s books! Great review, Sherry.

  4. Great reviews, Sherry! I’d visit a real haunted house in a heartbeat (with the hope it would still be beating when I left!). I’d take along a digital recorder, my EMF meter, and my “spirit box.” Yep, I’ve done some ghost hunting. I had one VERY spooky experience that absolutely freaked-out everyone in the room, me included. Hope I win because this looks like a great read!

    • LOL Your comments always crack me up. I love your sense of humor. And you have really done some ghost hunting. Coolio. Good luck, Michael!

    • Good call. I hardly go anywhere without a camera in my hand. Don’t want to miss those pesky ghouls.

  5. I’ve been in a few “Real” haunted houses. I always want a video camera and never seem to have one when something questionable happens.

  6. I grew up in a haunted house. Terrified me but would still go in another. I think I’d take a camera or recorder.
