Kindred
The Birthrite Series #2
by Tiffany Apan
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

It is the summer of 1933 and nearly two years since that fateful
Halloween night in Plains, New York.

Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, eighteen-year-old Cletus Blake spends his
days working to help his family through the massive economic
recession spreading throughout the United States and many other areas
of the world. As society struggles to accept that the economic surge
of the 1920s are long gone, Cletus also clings to the memory of his
last phone conversation with his cousin Dorothy. Having formed and
maintained a relationship with two of her close friends – the
recently married Reginald and Gail Carr Johnson – the three find
solace in regular communication with one another.

Like Dorothy, Cletus possesses supernatural abilities inherited through
his bloodline. His vivid dreams and visions – including ones of a
beautiful young Romani woman and twin baby boys – continue to
increase in strength. Meanwhile, Reginald and Gail begin falling prey
to dark adversaries that have been lying in wait.

Evil surrounds at every turn, old friends race to help, and ancient evil
re-emerges. A war between worlds brews beneath the surface,
threatening to rip the protective seams that keep the portals
sealed.

Then in the midst of it
all, Cletus happens upon a caravan traveling through his Ohio town.
The very familiar Romanichal family’s history ties not only to his
own past, but to all the kin of the four men that experienced worlds
outside of their own on that summer solstice in 1844. All are linked
to a future that will reunite the Blakes and the Livingstons, two
families that at one time, shared a very unlikely
friendship.

Kindred is the second
full-length novel in The Birthrite Series. Picking up from where
Descent and Sacred Atonement: A Novelette left off, the story
continues to challenge all that is known about light and dark, good
and evil. Passion, intrigue, and secrets abound as history unravels.
Revelations uncovered in previous installments are given new
perspectives, taking the reader on a thrilling ride into a world
where nothing is ever what it appears to be.

Tiffany Apan grew up among the thick forests of the Appalachian Mountains in
Northeastern Pennsylvania. It was there she began honing artistic
abilities and received much of her creative inspiration. A misfit
among her peers (she was the only one in her fifth grade writing
class obsessed enough with Vikings and Norwegian mythology to write
poems about them), Tiffany was highly active in the artistic
community in Wilkes-Barre, PA, involving herself in all music,
theater, visual arts, and writing. Eventually, she settled quite
comfortably into a role as “that artsy kid in black” who sits in
a coffee shop, drinking endless amounts of coffee and tea while
writing furiously in a journal or sketchpad.

After graduating high school, she left the Northeastern PA ghosts for the
Southeastern PA zombies (Pittsburgh). Upon the move, Tiffany became
involved with the indie film scene, landing supporting roles in a
couple films. This also gave way to the release of her music with
partner in crime, Jason English. Since then, she has gone on to act
in several films and theater productions with starring and supporting
roles, release music to critical acclaim, and receive accolades for
her writing and producing.

The Appalachian Mountains serve as a backdrop for many of her stories,
including The Cemetery by the Lake and The Birthrite Series
.

Monday Mini Review – Fiery Edge of Steel by Jill Archer @archer_jill

.

I was surprised by the originality of Jill Archer’s A Fiery Edge of Steel and wonder why I have not read any of her work before. My loss…

If you are looking for a fantastic demons and angels series, look no further.

Fiery Edge of Steel (Noon Onyx, #2)

Goodreads  /  Amazon US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA

MY REVIEW

A wonderfully original magical adventure and I am loving this mismatched band of travelers that gave me a laugh here and there as Noon Onyx and her band of angels battle to save The Shallows, fighting fabulous demons with their magic. I love how Noon Onyx grows and develops while on their mission and there are plenty of surprises and second chances along the way that kept me reading til the early hours of the morning. I won this book and now I wonder why it took me so long to read it.

I won this book and have not read the first Noon Onyx story, Dark Light of Day, by Jill Archer. Even though this is the second book in the series, I felt it filled in enough blanks, that my reading enjoyment did not suffer because of it. The result of their mission is wrapped up, but there is more to come and, if you are like me, you will want to know what happens on their next adventure and to know…what about Ari?

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 4 Stars

GOODREADS BLURB

Lucifer and his army triumphed at Armageddon, leaving humans and demons living in uncertain peace based on sacrifice and strict laws. It is up to those with mixed demon and human blood, the Host, to prevent society from falling into anarchy.

Noon Onyx is the first female Host in memory to wield the destructive waning magic that is used to maintain order among the demons. Her unique abilities, paired with a lack of control and reluctance to kill, have branded her as an outsider from her peers. Only her powerful lover, Ari Carmine, and a roguish and mysterious Angel, Rafe Sinclair, support her unconventional ways.

When Noon is shipped off to a remote outpost to investigate several unusual disappearances, a task which will most likely involve trying and killing the patron demon of that area, it seems Luck is not on her side. But when the outpost settlers claim that an ancient and evil foe has stepped out of legend to commit the crimes, Noon realizes that she could be facing something much worse than she ever imagined…

What are Reaper Rewards? Limbo by Marko Pandza @markopandza

Welcome to Limbo.

Do you think you qualify for Reaper Rewards?

Enter…if you dare…and find out.

Limbo.

Amazon US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA  /  Goodreads

MY ONE SENTENCE REVIEW

Limbo by Marko Pandza is a unique and original take on Limbo and the Grim Reaper which had me working hard to visualize the setting, yet laughing at the grisly Reaper rewards, and what happens when someone escapes, when no one reigns in Limbo and it is allowed to ravage humans and Earth, totally out of control, leaving me queasy and asking the question What If.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 3 Stars

GOODREADS BLURB

This is a story of a man who accidentally becomes Grim the Reaper, the most highly revered killer in Limbo. A place beyond time and space as we know it where psychopaths compete for perverse honour and status as they carry out their deathly duties.

As Grim struggles to hold onto the memories of the life he’s lost, he discovers that the insane being who shaped him (and the course of existence itself) may have sinister plans for the one thing he values most.

In Limbo, the end is only the beginning.

The Spider Apocalypse Is Here in Skitter by Ezekiel Boone @ezekiel_boone

I love a good horror novel, and after reading The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone, I had to have Skitter, Book II in the series.

Just looking at the cover gives me the willies and shivers run up and down my spine. I can only imagine what reading the book is going to do to me.

Bring it on, Ezekiel!

Skitter (The Hatching #2)

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I HATE SPIDERS!

Skitter by Ezekiel Boone is the continuation of The Hatching and the spiders are winning. If you weren’t afraid of spiders before, you will be after reading about the spider apocalypse.

Millions of people around the world are dead and there is no end in sight.

Melanie never thought she would become the most important woman in the world…but, here she is and the pressure is intense as she struggles to save the world.

Would she succeed?

Agent Mike Rich had been at ground zero, finding the very first spider and he hasn’t stopped since.

People’s true colors come out when disaster occurs, and we have our share of heroes and villains. Do any of us know how we would act in a time of crisis? I would hope I would rise to the occasion. How about you?

Would the war games, flu epidemics and disaster protocols the government has practiced and had in place for years…decades…succeed? We are about to find out.

If you want something to keep you looking out the corner of your eye, jumping at the slightest perceived movement, slapping at the creepy crawlie feeling running up and down your arms, READ THIS!

I voluntarily reviewed Skitter by Ezekiel Boone.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos  4 STARS

GOODREADS BLURB

Tens of millions of people around the world are dead. Half of China is a nuclear wasteland. Mysterious flesh-eating spiders are marching through Los Angeles, Oslo, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, and countless other cities. According to scientist Melanie Gruyer, however, the spider situation seems to be looking up. Yet in Japan, a giant, truck-sized, glowing egg sack gives a shocking preview of what is to come, even as survivors in Los Angeles panic and break the quarantine zone. Out in the desert, survivalists Gordo and Shotgun are trying to invent a spider super weapon, but it’s not clear if it’s too late, because President Stephanie Pilgrim has been forced to enact the plan of last resort: The Spanish Protocol. America, you are on your own.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR (from Amazon)

Ezekiel BooneI live in upstate New York with my wife and kids. Whenever I travel and say I’m from New York, people think I mean NYC, but we live about three hours north of New York City. Our house is five minutes outside of a university town. We’re far enough out of town that, at night, it’s dark.
No.

Darker than that.

Dark enough that, if you’re not careful, you might fall off the small cliff at the edge of my property. If you’re lucky, the water will be up enough to break your fall. If you’re not lucky, please sign a waiver before you come to visit.

I’ve got two unruly dogs who are mostly friendly. Well, that’s not true. The part about them being unruly is true, but one of them is the most friendly dog you’ve ever met, and the other dog … isn’t. They are good writing partners, though they spend a lot of their day curled up in front of the wood burning stove and ignoring me. Unless I’m making lunch. They pay attention to me then.

THE HATCHING is Ezekiel Boone’s first book, but it’s not actually *my* first book. I also write under the name Alexi Zentner. Alexi Zentner’s books are pretty different from Ezekiel Boone’s.

Excerpt:

“Split up!” Lucas called, charging left with three monks on his heels. They went head to head with the ground minions. Seamus and Dean went right, staying close to the two monks.

Lucas was surrounded. Three winged beasts swooped in trying to snatch them up, but Lucas and the monks managed to foil their attempts. The monks were ramming their heels, knees, elbows, and fists into any attacker in their way. Lucas drew his Wakizashi swords and began slashing demons, spilling their intestines, and severing heads from bodies. The scene was reminiscent of a Middle Age killing field. He knew he needed to gash open a pathway like a maggot eating its way through flesh to find the demon leader.

Wiping the crimson life-forced infused fluid off his face, Lucas cast a quick glance at Seamus and Dean to see if they were taking advantage of the blood soaked opening he was creating.

A winged demon snapped the neck of one monk and tore the jugular out of another with his teeth. They were dying out here in the open, like a rabbit in an open field caught in the eyes of a raptor. Casualties amid clouds of black dust continued to litter the field.

“Move under the pillars,” Seamus yelled.

Lucas pulled back so they would be protected by the roof and support columns surrounding the grassy courtyard.

They regrouped. “Let’s harpoon that mother fucker and pull him down to us,” Lucas pointed to the blackhorned demon he’d identified as the leader. “If we can take him down, we might stand a chance.”

The hoard moved in like the fog off a stormy sea.

The Devil’s Daughter @LucindaPawnShop

I won The Devil’s Daughter by Hope Shcenk de Michele and Paul Marquez in a giveaway. Sorry, but I cannot remember where. I love covers with eyes. Between the title and the cover, I think someone may be up to something bad. What do you think?

Come visit Lucinda’s Pawn Shop and find what is looking for you.

Devil's Daughter (Lucinda's Pawnshop, #1)MY REVIEW

The Devil’s Daughter is a paranormal, supernatural and magical book that pits good against evil. This original storyline has a twist from the norm.

Lucinda runs a pawn shop. Be careful when you go in, because she may have just what is looking for you. Could it be a gift? Could it be a curse?

Lucinda is the daughter of Lucifer and Eve. At first, I thought she was evil, but there is more to Lucinda than meets the eye. She has her own agenda and is often at odds with her father. She wonders why God has forsaken her. Her world turns topsy turvy when she meets Dominic Adeodatus Amado, whose name means Gift of a loving God. Hmmm…

I love this unique and unusual version of the battle between good and evil. I loved the characters, both good and bad. They did their jobs well. As I read along, I grew to like Lucinda more and more, but her partners, not so much. I felt really bad for Mona, but that is a story you will need to find out for yourself.

Humanity has its own struggles, some choosing the good path, some not, and some caught in Between.

So…come in to Lucinda’s Pawnshop. She will make sure you find…something.

This is the first book in the series and I am looking for Book II…

Am I Alive? Bleedovers by William Todd Rose

Bleedovers by William Todd Rose is a Dystopian novella that rivals Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Bleedovers: A Dystopian Novella

Cover by TK

MY REVIEW

Bleedovers by William Todd Rose is a dark fiction novella that will keep you awake at night, wondering, could it happen to you.

The title didn’t make much sense to me until I started to read. Then it became clear.

OMG! The elaborate details of William Todd Rose’s world building are amazing. I am thoroughly creeped out. I sure couldn’t figure out WTF was going on. I raced through the pages, sometimes forgetting to breathe.

Chuck is a Level I Recon & Enforcement Technician – Whisk. He works in a covert, underground facility. He loves puzzles, math equations and the process of finding solutions. Chuck was investigating an unnatural death. Would it take him too?

Meditation frees the mind from the body and sometimes someone gets stuck in a Crossfade. Imagine the horror of not knowing whether you are dead or alive.

The paranormal leads to science fiction horror. The experiments invade your privacy, they know all your thoughts. I cannot imagine what it would be like to feel someone crawling through my mind, ferreting out all my secrets.

There are ghosts who refuse to move on. They have unfinished business. They delight in terrorizing. Why did the ghost scare him more than Crossfades? Being haunted and tortured by a serial killer seeking revenge and you can do nothing about it.

The details take me into his head and I feel his paralyzing terror, his inability to move to save himself, as the hatred washes over him. The ghost can cause physical damage, maybe even kill. It is all powerful. It not only enters your sleep, but your reality, making you see things. How would you fight something you cannot touch?

What is real, what is illusion?

Poltergeist is a fairy tale compared to Bleedovers by William Todd Rose.

Bleedovers is a dark, and I mean dark, speculative fiction novella that kept me enthralled beginning to end. Oh, about the ending, I didn’t see it coming and I was let down. It had to happen that way, but I didn’t want it to. That makes it all the better. We can’t always get what we want.

I received a copy of Bleedovers by William Todd Rose in return for an honest and unbiased review.

The Vampire, the Hunter, and the Girl by Martin Lastrapes
(The Vampire and the Hunter Trilogy #1)
Publication date: March 18th 2015
Genres: Adult, Horror, Paranormal

MY REVIEW

The Vampire, the Hunter and the Girl by Marti Lastrapes is Book I of a trilogy. The title tells us there will be a triangle, but this triangle will include some unusual characters in unusual situations. I see some serious problems ahead for all of them.

They were brought before Dracula. Why? Let’s read on and find out.

Adam is a vampire and his biggest problem is boredom, so he takes up a hobby, bowling. Cherry, a vampire, had found him there and after she changed him they became inseparable. When Cherry disappears he notices Olivia.

Jesus is the Mexican vampire hunter. His mother had been killed by a vampire, so he became a latch key kid at a very young age. The WWF and wrestling were his babysitters. He had wrestled in school but mixed martial arts was what he wanted do. He’d only had one friend, Daniel and they had a plan. Jesus would be the fighter and Daniel the trainer until…

Now, Jesus walks the dark side and uses himself as bait to lure vampires in for the kill.

Olivia works at the bowling alley and is a huge wrestling fan. She is writing a book about vampires. Her memories draw her to Heritage Park. She loves looking out at Rancho Cucamonga, feeling the dewy grass beneath her feet and the air flowing around her body as she swings to and fro, until…

Adam and Olivia become friends of a sort. She lets him feed and he gives her information for her vampire novel. How dysfunctional is that?

Jesus and Olivia meet at the gym where he works and trains, the Ground and Pound. She was there to learn self defense.

Olivia’s friend Elowyn strips at Tropical Lei where Olivia also bartends. Johnson is Jesus’s friend at Ground and Pound . The scene where Elowyn and Johnson are on a date and Victus, a vicious vampire, sees them is great. The vampire TV shows and movies I have seen help me to visualize the action and I love it.

Elowyn and Olivia’s ideas of life seem very naive, but had a ring of truth to them. It adds a bit of reality into their fantasies and expectations and shows how different life really is – life lessons.

The Barbershop, vampires went there for a cut and dinner. A gruesome scenario, where humans are chained to the wall, half dead to almost dead to barely alive. Would a vamp care if they were filthy and stank of day old sweat and fear?

A girl, a boy, a vampire – not your normal triangle. The story being told from different character views, was good and bad. At times, the story seemed to jumped around a lot with the repetition slowing down the pacing, but I did like the different characters descriptions of the same event. This is an ARC, so I think this can easily be improved upon before the finished product is released.

I found some originality in the storyline. Martin Latrapes development of the characters brought them to life on the pages. I really wanted them to end up friends, but something tells me that cannot happen. What do you think?

Why did Dracula haul them in? The ending explained many of my questions and raised many more. I enjoyed and would recommend The Vampire, The Hunter, The Girl by Martin Latrapes. I will be following the author to find out what happens in Book II, The Vampire, The Hunter and The Witch.

I received an ARC in return for an honest and unbiased review.
