The hunt is on!

Sixteen-year-old Bree Sunderland must inject herself with an untested version of her father’s gene therapy to become a werewolf in order to stop a corrupt group of mercenaries from creating a team of unstoppable lycanthrope soldiers.

When Bree went with her scientist father to Ireland, she thought it would be a vacation to study bog bodies. She never expected to fall in love with a mysterious young Irishman and certainly never expected to become the kind of monster her father said only existed in nightmares. Dr. Sunderland discovers that lycanthropy was not a supernatural curse but rather a genetic mutation. When they return home, her dad continues his research, but the military wants to turn that research into a bio weapons program and rogue soldiers want to steal the research to turn themselves into unstoppable killing machines.

Bree’s boyfriend Liam surprises her with a visit to the United States, but there are darker surprises in store for both of them. As evil forces hunt those she loves, Bree must become an even more dangerous hunter to save them all.

Predator gives the werewolf legend a couple of new spins by introducing the Benandanti (an actual folkloric belief that certain families of Italy and Livonia were werewolves who fought against evil), as well as a modern scientific approach to mutation and the science of transgenics.

After it became apparent she wouldn’t fit the role of a proper 1900′s lady, her father, Sherlock, called in some lingering favors, and landed her a position at the Mutter Museum. The museum was Arabella’s dream; she was to become a purveyor of abnormal science. What her father called a BoneSeeker.

Henry Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double assignment–to become a finder of abnormal antiquities and to watch over and keep Arabella Holmes. An easy task, if he could only get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives in his general direction.

Soon, Arabella and Henry are caught in a fight for their lives as scientific debate swirls around them. The-Emissary-Cover For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.

When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret.

To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.

Christina George has worked in publishing for twenty years (give or take). Here’s what this book isn’t. It’s not a slam against publishing (though it is broken) and it’s not a slam against authors (though some of them are crazy). This book is not autobiographical though many of the stories are true. No you won’t know which ones, cause it’s more fun to guess, right? George continues to work in publicity and helps authors because at the end of the day she does love books, she loves publishing, and she loves authors. She hopes you’ll enjoy this romp through Kate’s world as much as she enjoyed creating it.

BLURB

Being thirteen has pitfalls of its own, but growing up has never been this hard.

Jenna had promised her mother that if the worst happened during her dad’s weekend, they would meet at Red Hill Ranch. When she finds seven words spray-painted on her dad’s wall the morning after a deadly outbreak, she makes a promise to herself: to get to the ranch with her seven-year-old sister, Halle, and to get them both there alive.

Among Monsters is the companion novella to Red Hill, both exploring from different perspectives what many broken families experience every other weekend: What if your children aren’t with you when the world ends? What would you do to get to them? What would they go through to get to you?

For Jenna, seeing her mother again is worth everything. Determined to keep her promise, she is faced with experiences and decisions that force her to leave her childhood behind.

EXCERPT

The governor was elevated above the crowd on a make-shift stage in the center of the room, speaking comforting words into a microphone, as people yelled questions and concerns.

“I hear what you’re saying. I’m not saying not to worry. With words like epidemic and now pandemic being thrown around…it’s a worrisome situation. But we’re safe here, and that’s what we need to focus on now. Panic won’t solve anything.”

“Is it the terrorists?” someone yelled.

“No,” the governor said, amused. “I’ve been told it’s a virus.”

“What kind of virus?” someone else asked.

“We’re not exactly sure yet,” Governor Bellmon said.

He was being honest. I’d give him that.

“There are reports in Mississippi!” a man said, holding up his phone.

The crowd erupted, and the governor leaned over to whisper something in a man’s ear. He was dressed in a suit, and he nodded before leaving the stage immediately. He walked over to Tom, the fire chief, just feet away from where we stood. Tom listened intently to the man in the suit and then waved to his men to come closer.

“The governor has ordered we gather water and supplies. We’re going into disaster mode, guys. I know most of you came in for the photo op, but you’re getting called in. Let’s get going.”

The men gave a nod and turned for the back door. Dad looked around and caught Tom as he was making his way toward the police chief and the mayor.

“Tom, I’ve got my little girls here,” Dad said.

Tom looked down at Halle and me and then nodded, giving Dad an unspoken pass, before he continued on.

“Now what?” I asked.

“We wait for the guys to get back and help as best as we can.” He leaned in, whispering in my ear. “Do me a favor, Jenna. Stay off your phone. I don’t want any of the stuff on the news to scare your sister.”

I felt a small hand grip mine. I knelt down beside Halle. Her stringy blonde hair was a ratty mess as it always was after school. Her clothes were mismatched, and her heather-gray hoodie jacket was tied around her waist. She pushed up her black-rimmed glasses, her ice-blue eyes glistening.

We couldn’t look more different—Halle with her light-blue eyes and tiny frame and me with my honey-brown irises and chestnut hair. I was always athletic, always pushing against boundaries, vying for independence, even when I was little. Halle just always seemed so fragile.

As if she could hear my thoughts and personify them, she squeaked her next words, “I want Mom.”

“I bet she’ll head this way as soon as she gets off work. She’ll want to be here with us,” I said.

Halle shook her head. “She won’t come here, Jenna. She’ll go to our place.”

“Red Hill? That’s just if something bad happens, silly.”

Halle looked around at the roomful of frightened people. “This is bad, Jenna.”

I stood and squeezed her to my side.

Book 1 in the Molly Maddison series

Molly Maddison grew up in a funeral home that unfortunately backed up to the largest Insane Asylum in the state. Very few understand what happens after death, Molly does. While other children were playing in the park with their living friends, Molly was in the cemetery playing with the dead. To say she is troubled is an understatement.

Now Molly has a new plan, to attempt to lead a normal life, and ban the contact with any of the dead. Realizing that she is madly in love with one of them was never part of that plan. However neither life or death ever go as planned and Molly is called upon to perform her role as the family Crypt Keeper…

Is she up for the task? Only time will tell.

CHAPTER 1

“Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere.” ~ Helen Gurley Brown

               The alarm blaring on the bedside table woke me out of the dead of sleep. “Ugh,” I groaned, picking up a pillow and chucking it at what I hoped was the general direction of the annoying tones. When the alarm didn’t cease I surrendered, cracking open one eye to read the time. I went from drowsy to full-out panic mode when my mind registered eight thirty-five p.m.“Holy Mother of God!” Flinging the blankets off the bed I vaulted forward, only to find that my left leg was tangled in the bed sheet and I went down knee first onto a kitchen chair. “Idiot, stupid ass monkey piece of shit!” I shouted the instant the pain registered. Wrenching my leg free and shoving the chair aside I sat down on the floor and assessed my injuries. I’d have a nice bruise on my knee and shin, otherwise, nothing serious. Then I remembered I was working on curbing my need to use profanity every other word and snapped the rubber band on my wrist twice, wincing at yet another sting of pain. I’d been reading this self-help book recently that swore by this technique. The wristband bad habit treatment is designed to take you out of your own head and snap you back into reality. The wristband treatment will act as a reminder to those with habitual undesirable occurrences that they need to overcome their bad behaviors. I wasn’t convinced in the method; however, if I ever planned on working with children my potty mouth needed to go.

Standing to my feet, I picked up the chair and walked it back into the dining room where it belonged. I should know better by now. The furniture being moved around the house, the dishes in the bathtub and all my frozen foods set out on the counters to spoil was a common occurrence in my tiny apartment these days. He was mad at me again. They all were. I’d left him…er, them. No, I wasn’t going there. I didn’t move over one hundred miles away to dwell on the past. “Never look back, Molly. The past is a wilderness of horrors.” I quoted my favorite line from the movie The Wolfman. I did, however, replace Lawrence’s name with my own. I would have gone a lot farther if it wasn’t for my younger brother still living at home there. I was always available for him, mostly. All right, I’d been a shitty sister but my intentions were honorable. Thankfully he didn’t have the curse. It skipped him and I was glad.

Suddenly I realized that the alarm was still going off in my bedroom. I made my way back into the room, which didn’t take longer than a few seconds since my apartment is a whopping seven hundred square feet that consisted of a tiny kitchen, living room/dining room combo, a bathroom that I could barely turn around in and bedroom. After shutting it off I began to dress in jeans and a black t-shirt that had Party like a rock star written across the chest. Being a no-frills kind of chick, jeans always seemed like the obvious choice for any and every occasion. I pulled my dark brown hair back into a ponytail and bent down to slip on my chucks.

“You aren’t seriously going to wear your hair like that, are you?” a voice behind me asked. Shrieking, I nearly jumped out of my skin again.

“Holy shit!” Turning around, I faced the intruder and narrowed my eyes at the young woman dressed in leather pants, biker boots that belonged to me and a red tank that read Bite Me! Her hair was dyed jet black with dark green chunky highlights today. The color was always changing but her razored-at-the-chin hairstyle was always the same. She stood there smirking at me with her hands on her hips. “Aren’t you a little too old to continue with these ridiculous pranks?” Not knowing her actual age, she and I had estimated it around twenty-four or so, the same as me.

She rolled her eyes and plopped down on my secondhand sofa that had seen far better days. “After all these years you should be used to it by now. I mean, really Molly, you’re too easy.”

“Jewels, I bruised the shit out of…” I snapped the band on my wrist. “I mean bruised the dickens out of my shin!” The past twelve years we’ve been friends she’d never told me her real name. I assumed it was Julie—hence “Jewels”—but wasn’t certain. I’d asked her a million times over the years, and she’d always reply with the same answer: My old name is as irrelevant as my past. That name died along with that part of my life. I didn’t agree with her; her past was obviously relevant. For the sake of our friendship I’d let it go.

She rolled her caramel-colored eyes and blew a giant bubble in the gum she was chomping on. When it popped she shook her head. “I don’t know anything about that.” She eyed the rubber band on my wrist. “What the hell are you doing to your wrist there? They locked people in solitary for less than that on my ward.”

Ignoring her reference to her institutionalization period because the mere thought of it made my heart hurt, I answered her question. “I’m trying to clean up my speech. No one will hire a pediatric behavioral therapist that swears every other word. I’d gotta run—I’m late for class. Don’t mess up my boots, they’re my favorites.” Snatching my sling bag off the back of the dining chair I went out the front door, closing it behind me.

The second I glanced back up, Jewels was standing next to me. “I thought you already got your master’s degree. Why are you still taking classes?”

Hurrying into the stairwell I replied, “I still have to take my state licensing exam. Besides, I like taking classes. There is something exceedingly comforting about losing yourself in textbooks.”

“I think this whole thing is stupid. You have a job waiting for you at home—you don’t need to put yourself through all of this.” Jewels mumbled behind me. She’d been pushing this “job at home” idea for the last few months and it wasn’t like her. She’d always been so supportive in the past. After descending five flights of stairs I was exhausted and considered joining some of the girls that I knew ran every morning for a whopping half a second, then reminded myself that I didn’t run.

“It isn’t stupid! You know this is what I’ve always wanted to do.” I continued into the lobby. “Thank you.” I nodded to the guy that held the door open for me to exit just as Jewels shot him a bird.

“Stop that!”

The smiling boy’s face was replaced with confusion. “I beg your pardon?”

“I’m sorry,” I pointed to a non-existent head set on my left ear. “Phone call.” His face relaxed. “Oh, no problem.” Smiling, he waved. “See ya around.” Jewels laughed, as she got a kick out of making me look like a lunatic. Something I should be accustomed to by now. It’s hard to function in a society when you can see and hear things that others cannot. I sometimes feel that I am not made of the same matter as others, and at other times I feel completely normal—whatever that means.

“Look, I have to go do this,” I whispered as I passed groups of students chatting around the campus lawn. Most of them would assume I was on the phone, so I didn’t need to be too concerned,; not like when I used to talk to her as a child. That was an entirely different story all together. “Catch up with me after, okay?” She didn’t say a word, just vanished, meaning she was pissed. Sighing, I continued on to class.

As usual the class had already begun. I slipped quietly into the small room and took a seat in the back. Going unnoticed wasn’t an option at this point. The sandy blond-haired professor with the most intelligent eyes I’d ever seen in my life was already knee deep in his lecture. I’d never forget the first day I saw him. I’d been on the lawn reading when he pulled up in his car. He had some sort of energy about him that caught my eye—well, that and a great ass. He’d made a point to stop and introduce himself to me. I’d nearly choked on my own saliva trying to formulate a coherent reply to the complicated question he presented me with: Hi, how are you today? I’m embarrassed every time I relive that day in my mind.

Professor Damon Night made direct eye contact with me without missing a beat during his presentation. He always made direct eye contact with me and I’d always had a hard time maintaining said eye contact. We’d met only a few times after our first awkward introduction, and after becoming completely-tongue tied around him repeatedly I made the determination that he was a detriment to my almost nonexistent ego. Therefore it had been my mission to avoid him at all costs during after school hours. Despite my efforts he seemed to be everywhere I was—in the library, at the cafés, and he shopped at the same markets. There was an embarrassing cart crashing incident at the market that I tried desperately to forget. Why he affected me in this way was beyond me. Yes, he was an attractive man and I was a healthy, lonely young woman in desperate need of male companionship, I thought while licking my lips as I took in his masculine frame. Strangely his eyes seemed to follow from the long distance separating us, confirming my need to find a boyfriend fast and stop having these fantasies.

Glancing away I whipped out my phone, opened my memo app and hit the record button. When I looked back up he was still staring at me with those dark green eyes that seemed to smolder with desire every time they devoured me. Damn my overactive imagination and my lusty fantasies. They were negatively affecting my brain function.

“He’s one hot piece of ass, huh?” Jewels whispered into my ear from the seat next to mine, then began noisily opening a bag of Walker potato chips, my favorite brand.

To my credit I didn’t jump this time. Looking down at my phone I whispered in the most annoyed tone I could muster, “You know I hate it when you show up in one of my classes. You swore you wouldn’t do it anymore.”

“No, as I recall I promised not to show up at any of your classes during finals, so obviously this situation does not apply.” She shoved a handful of chips into her mouth and nudged me with her elbow “So you hit that yet or what?”

Gritting my teeth I glanced back up, rubbing the tip of my nose with my hand to conceal my moving lips. “Dammit! How am I supposed to concentrate with you gabbing in my ear the entire time? And no, I haven’t hit that nor do I have any plans to do so. Now shut the hell up!” I whispered in the softest angry tone possible. She made a locking her lips motion, and after throwing away the key she pointed toward my arm. When I ignored her she elbowed me hard, shoving me forward in the seat. Nervously I glanced around to see if anyone had noticed. Thankfully it didn’t appear that anyone had. Before I could let out a sigh of relief the bitch did it again, and this time I nearly fell out of the chair. “Shit!” I shouted loudly. When I sat back up she was gone and the entire room had turned to stare at me.

Snatching my bag off the floor I did the only thing I could do in my current situation: I bolted, nearly hyperventilating in the process. Jewels was standing casually outside the room, dusting the crumbs off her shirt as if nothing was amiss. I would have ripped her a new one if the hall didn’t have other people milling around. Stomping off, I’m sure I had steam rising off my head because I was fuming.

“Don’t be that way Molly—I was only trying to help.” When I didn’t reply she proceeded to bribe me. “I brought you a case of Walker chips from my pop over to the UK last week, the variety pack. They’re in your pantry.” She was upset. I could hear it in her tone; nevertheless, I didn’t turn around. “Come on Molls, don’t be like that. This is hard for me. You and I have always had each other until this whole school thing. I’m trying to adjust, truly I am. Don’t be mad at me—you know I can’t handle it,” she pleaded. Softening, I glanced back at her. She looked so downtrodden that I just couldn’t stay mad. This was hard on her, I knew that, and it was hard on me too. She’d been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. She’d been there for me always.

Crossing the parking lot, I moved over to a vacant bench and sat. This time of night no one would be out here and I would be able to speak to her freely without the prying eyes and ears of others. Staying mad at her had never been easy. “Did you bring the cookies as well?” I smirked, folding my arms. She grinned and a box of McVitie’s Caramel Biscuits appeared in her hand.

“Of course.” Taking them out of her palm, I ripped open the box and wrapper and took out a biscuit. She plopped down next to me and I extended the box toward her. Smiling, she also took one biscuit as well and we leaned against each other, munching on our snacks.

After swallowing I asked, “How were you trying to help me?”

She reached over and snapped the rubber band on my wrist. “You were cursing like a sailor in there.” I winced. “Oh, right.” “By the way, you do realize that hot ass is really into you?” she said around a mouthful of biscuit, wagging her eyebrows.

“No, he isn’t.” I took another nibble of mine. I couldn’t consume the massive amount of junk food Jewels could without it showing up on my ass the next morning. “Trust me, I know these things and that guy is definitely into you.” Uh oh. I turned and stared at her. “Don’t look at me like that, I haven’t been spying. You know I’m over that kind of shit.” She grinned. “It’s no fun if they don’t know I’m watching.”

“You better be.” I gave her a stern look. “Remember the last live guy you were in love with.” I did the finger quotes when saying the words in love. It lasted for less than two weeks but that had been enough time to do serious damage.

She blew out a breath. “Not this again.”

“Yes, this again. You drove the guy insane with all your writing on the mirrors in his bathroom and leaving little gifts for him. We’re lucky he bounced back after a little therapy. It is unnatural for someone dead to be in a relationship with someone living.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “You should talk.”

Slumping back next to her I argued, “Why do you think I moved to Atlanta? I’m trying to get on with my life among the living. Besides, it is slightly different with me.”

She snagged another cookie. “True. And that rule doesn’t apply to us as friends.”

As much as I wanted to disagree with her and as much as I wanted her to try to get on with her life on that side, I couldn’t imagine not having her around. We’d been close since the day she’d wandered up onto our property. The poor thing didn’t even know she’d died. And I didn’t have the heart to tell her until weeks later, and it wasn’t until she’d tried to speak to other living kids our age that she noticed something was off. “No, not us as friends.”

BLOOD BROTHERS: Escape To Creeporia

by Dean C. Moore

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
Fraternal twins are separated from birth, and raised to be assassins. They were never meant to meet. But even when kept apart, they’re just too powerful. Their paranormal abilities cease to be an advantage when they can no longer be controlled. So they are scheduled for cancellation.
Their paths cross before they can be taken out. It is only then that they discover the true depths of their betrayal. Not only are they stronger when they’re together, they’re half-breeds, sired by an all-powerful warlock.
The question is, are they strong enough even together to take him on now that he’s coming for them?
They have an ace up their sleeves they are not aware of. Drawn to the same kind of women, they find themselves married to a pair of sorceresses whose magical abilities are only now surfacing.
But one encounter with dear old dad is all it takes for them to realize, they’re still the underdogs.
From the back of the book:
VBT_Blood_Brothers__Tour_Book_Cover_Banner_copy“The series is called Blood Brothers, but this adventure is really a family affair: the brothers, their partners, children and even their old man in a starring role as the villain. Think Disney’s Incredibles, but in a violent and bizarre fantasy world.” Rob May, Dragon Killer
“With incredibly detailed world building and action scenes, this story seems like it would make a phenomenal film or TV series.
Moore pulls out all the stops with dragons, telekinesis, shapeshifters and insurmountable odds in this battle of good versus evil – and a villain who just won’t lay down and die.” Demelza Carlton, Ocean’s Gift
“When you read a Dean C. Moore novel, you can expect rich, original characters, witty dialogue and unexpected plot turns.  Blood Brothers doesn’t disappoint.”  JC Gatlin, Designated Survivor
Welcome Dean. I hope you enjoy your visit to fundinmental.
5 Fun or Silly Facts About Me
  1. I live in the country on roughly twenty acres. My closest neighbors all own larger pieces of property and spend at least half of their time farming. And wouldn’t you know, they’re both writers? Both have authored some pretty impressive books that have done well. For fans of synchronicity and serendipity (Deepak Chopra wrote a book on this topic), it could be argued that this is a sign I’m on the right path.
  2. I hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail some years back, where I met some of the most remarkable and alluring characters I’ve ever encountered in the real world. Usually, as an author, I have to get lost in a fantasy world of my own making to meet people with this kind of magic. But they exist in the real world if you just know where to find them.  I’d like to chalk these chance encounters up to synchronicity too, and declare them the latest indicator that I’m on the right path with my fantasy writing. But I think it has more to do with the courage and willingness to leave everything behind when you walk that trail, and the college kids that are drawn to it at that sweet point in their lives where everything is possible and nothing, no hurdle is great enough to stand in their way. For anyone who has lost that sense of formidableness, I would encourage you to hike the Appalachian Trail. Admittedly, it’s not as prestigious as the Camino trail Shirley MacClaine once walked, but hey, it may be a lot more accessible for some folks.
  3. I have over five hundred books on spirituality that made it with me this last trip. Sadly, I had to part with hundreds of titles over the years with each move. Authors include Ken Wilber (he has many tomes out, and I’ve read them all.) I have a healthy dose of Deepak Chopra, and you’ll find any number of things pertaining to mysticism. Some stand out titles: The Way of Zen by Alan Watts. What Really Matters by Tony Shwartz. Diamond Heart by A. H. Almaas. There are any number of bridging books that connect spirituality with science and higher consciousness. Things like: The Physics of Immortality. The Physics of Consciousness. The Holographic Paradigm. This stuff seeps into my writing, especially my bigger epics, but so far I’ve yet to pen a book solely devoted to higher consciousness in non-fiction format. Well, that’s not entirely true. I have a series akin to the Conversations with God franchise that’s probably modeled just as much on The Great Dialogues by Plato. I’ll have to dust it off one of these days and consider publishing it. As to my qualifications to undertake such a project, rest assured I’m far more enlightened from the altered state in which I write than I am in real life. If only I could hold on to that inner peace and calm and infinite wisdom when I return to reality!
  4. For a professional author I’m the slowest reader you’ll ever meet. And I don’t just read, I underline, I highlight in different colors—each alluding to another point of emphasis, I leave notes, I edit. (Yes, I’m one of those people who have the unmitigated gall to edit Faulkner. Moby Dick was about a third of the size when I was done with my red pen. Sacrilege, I know.) But it’s how we grow as writers. I just wish I could get out of this habit so I could get through titles a bit faster.
  5. I’m on a quest to sample every piece of quality dark chocolate in the world. If I ever make it big as a writer, I might get a plane and title it The Chocolate Express, because it might just be more fun to fly to where they make the chocolate than to fly the chocolate to me.
Thanks, Dean, for telling us a bit about yourself.
If you ever get that plane, give me a call. 🙂
EXCERPT
The excerpts are exceptional and I would have loved to share them all.
This one was so darn cute, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
The electricity out throughout the house, both baby dragons soared into the kitchen, lighting the candles for Myrna with their fiery blasts, the star and heart shaped ones, the ones molded like mugs of beer with big foam headers, and the magic spell casting ones with the different colored flames.
Their work in the kitchen done, they dashed out to attend to the other rooms. Before Myrna could prance halfway up the stairs after them, she took out her Bic lighter, and put the flame to her forearm. “Ah! You’re awake, all right!”
Her next thought was, she suddenly had a pair of dragons to care for. How was she going to manage that? Oh dear, what do you guys eat?
She rushed back to the kitchen.
Myrna held a candle inside the refrigerator, as she ripped food out left and right. The roasted artichoke. The blue cheese and citrus bruschetta. The apricot pistachio halves. Everything meticulously wrapped. The dragons came swooping back into the room.
They looked at her, bewildered as she continued to plow through the itinerary. The vegetarian chili and macaroni. The tempeh and tapenade wrap. She was sure she had something to accommodate every palate.
“Whada ya think?” she said, gesturing to the buffet covering the entire kitchen thanks to her throwing food willy-nilly. One of the dragons bounded up and swooped to the floor, where it gulped down a mouse.
Myrna put up her hands gesturing, “Oh no, we’re all vegetarians here.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links
MEDIA_KIT_Author_PhotoI write sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventures and thrillers, or some combination thereof—usually with a strong vein of dark humor.  Though, my works are dramas first; the humor is there to take the edge off as with the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Transformers, and Jurassic Park franchises.
I wrote screenplays for a while, and while enjoying them, I found them a bit confining.  After a while you just need the extra page count to flesh out characters better and do additional world building, especially when considering doing anything epic in scope.  I also took a run at future forecasting and trend tracking, being as I always had my head in the future, things like Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock.  I also relished this, and can certainly see myself releasing a few titles accordingly in the nonfiction area.  But since delving into novels, short and long, I’ve definitely found my home and my voice.  For the first time I feel the restraints have been taken off of my imagination.  I suppose all mediums have their limits, so I may end up doing a mix of things, but I suspect I will continue to spend most of my time with novels.  Series add an additional dimension, allowing for even more depth and development both in the character and world building departments.  But I remain at heart a divergent thinker, so, no surprise, I seem to have more series going than follow up installments at this point.  That too may change over time; we’ll see.  Until then, it may be best to just think of these books as one-offs if you’re fond of my writing style and some of the themes I work with.
My current catalog of twelve books represents a little over five years’ worth of work.  I’m currently averaging a couple books annually.  Of my existing franchises with multiple installments, The Hundred Year Clone books can be read in any order, while the 5 books of Renaissance 2.0 must be read in sequence as they form part of a singular story arc (much as with A Game of Thrones.)
I live in the country where I breed bluebirds, which are endangered in these parts, as my small contribution to restoring nature’s balance.  When I’m not writing, or researching my next book, I may also be found socializing with friends, or working in my organic garden.
Violca’s Dragon
by Leilani Love
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB

Violca knows life can change instantly. Her parents died suddenly, leaving her to raise four younger sisters and keep them safe ~ even from the golden-eyed stranger.

Chase knows the Grey sisters possibly hold the key to his fate. He is determined to to get close, protect them and bring them to his Dragon King. What Violca doesn’t know is that once a dragon decides he wants something, there is no stopping him from getting it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Chase stays behind her as she walks on a path that leads away from the cabin, heading near the direction of the river. He knows Violca is aware of him and smiles to himself, knowing she is not turning around because she is trying to ignore him.
When she stumbles, he reacts quickly and is at her side, his arms around her before she can fall. She squirms, pushing away from him, almost falling with the effort.
Once he is sure she’s okay he carefully releases her. Standing in front of her, he looks her over and when she finally looks up at him, he notices that her violet eyes are darker as she looks at him angrily. “I didn’t ask you for your help,” she snaps.
Chase knows that smiling at her right now will not help him, nor will telling her she looks beautiful when she’s angry. Watching her breasts rising up and down as she breathes, her violet eyes sparkling with anger and the straight line of her lips, he fights the urge to kiss her. “You didn’t, but that doesn’t mean I want to see you hurt.”
She glares at him. “Why are you here? What do you want with me?”
Book & Author Details:
Zoe and the Demon Slayer by Neel Kay
Publication date: October 6th 2014
Genres: Fantasy, New Adult
SYNOPSIS
.
Twenty-four year old book worm and blogger Zoe Graves was looking forward to the fourth and final instalment of her favourite book saga – The Augustin Chronicles. The evening was meant to be spent in line at the local bookstore with hundreds of other fans, getting the book, maybe even meeting the author, and ultimately spending the night with the dreamiest hero of them all, Lucien de Forest and the love of his life Noomi Augustin.
But somewhere someone thought otherwise.
Confused and hurt after a mugging by the bookstore, Zoe is somehow transported to another world, and suddenly finds herself in a snow-covered landscape witnessing a bloody fight far away from the English summer, and is left to rely on the help from the rather reluctant Matis, who just happen to be out to kill none other than Zoe’s favourite hero and heroine, Lucien and Noomi.
Although convinced she might be in some sort of limbo or maybe even in a coma, Zoe figures that her role in the story is to prevent Matis from killing her all-time favourite fictional couple.
EXCERPT
Zoe and Thora found a pocket right of the entrance shielded by a few large rocks that protected them from straying eyes. There, Thora washed and re-dressed, and now it was Zoe’s turn.
Zoe stepped out of her dress with a relieved sigh. Finally, she was free of the nagging, coarse wool, and even though it was only temporary, it felt so good.
“I know,” Thora said as she brought Zoe a pot of water, warm from the fire. “They itch like crazy, don’t they? But they keep you warm in the winter cold.” When she put the pot down on the ground, she gasped as her eyes trailed over Zoe’s back. “My goodness, you’ve got bruises all over. Are you sure there’s nothing broken, like a couple of ribs or something?”
“I’m alright.”
“But Zoe…?” Thora brushed her fingertips over a particularly nasty-looking black bruise above Zoe’s left hipbone. Zoe twitched, and Thora quickly retracted her hand. “I’m sorry,” she said. “She really wanted to kill you, didn’t she?”
“No need to feel guilty then,” Matis’ voice sounded from the fireplace.
“It’s not nice to eavesdrop, Matis,” Thora shouted back, laughing. But when Zoe shot her a tight smile, her laugh quickly died down. “What’s wrong?”
“This is not my world,” Zoe whispered.
Thora nodded. “I’m sure you can go back as soon as we find Olander and the book.” Her eyes flickered and she had trouble remaining eye contact. Apparently, even Thora had a feeling that that would take a while.
“I have a family,” Zoe said. “They’ll be wondering where I am.” She crouched down to the pot and filled her palms with the lukewarm water, splashing it against her face, rubbing her neck, and dipping her hands back into the pot.
“Husband?” Thora inquired tentatively.
“I’m not married. I have parents, though, and a sister.”
“What’s her name?”
Zoe glanced up at Thora who looked genuinely interested.
“Um, her name is Emma.”
“Older or younger?”
“Older. She’s married and has twin boys.”
“So you have nephews.” Thora smiled. “Any suitors?”
Zoe scoffed. “You sound just like my sister.” She splashed some water on her shoulders allowing it to trickle down her back. “No, no suitors. And you? Do you have any family? Any brothers and sisters?”
“No. I’m an only child. It’s very rare, actually.” She winked and shot Zoe a naughty smile, making Zoe see flashes of rabbits humping vigorously in her mind’s eye. “But my mother was very small and weak, and she wouldn’t have survived a second pregnancy.” Thora laughed. “You’re finding it hard to believe that I come from the womb of such a woman, but my father was a big man, and all of this, this is pure muscle that I’ve worked really hard for.” She flexed her biceps and flashed Zoe her strong white teeth.
“I imagined all Kraquars were strong.”
“Well, how could you think otherwise, when the only Kraquar people you’ve met are the three of us? No, my mother was a potion-maker. She didn’t need the muscle power.”
“Your parents aren’t alive anymore?”
“No. I only have remote relatives like the ones living in Eldgaard. The ones we never made it to before you got yourself caught by Noomi’s guards.” She smiled. “No, Silas and Matis’ family is my family now.”
Zoe gaped at Thora, pointed a discreet finger in the general direction of the other inhabitants of the cave, and lowered her voice to a whisper. “Wait? Those two are related?”
“Not by blood, no. But they grew up together. Silas’ family took in Matis and his brother when their parents died just a few months apart. It was a long time ago, though. If you ask them, they are brothers.”
Thora shook Zoe’s dress, before offering it back to her. “You’re shivering. Here, put this back on.”
Zoe sighed, her eyes fixed on the purple dress. She stroked the coarse fabric with her fingertips. “Oh well, I suppose it’s better than freezing to death.”
The Murders at Astaire Castle by Lauren Carr – Giveaway
Add to your GOODREADS TBR list now.
SYNOPSIS
Mac Faraday Meets the Wolf Man!
Never tell Mac Faraday not to do something.
In The Murders at Astaire Castle, Spencer’s police chief, David O’Callaghan, learns this lesson the hard way when he orders Mac Faraday to stay away from the south end of Spencer’s mountaintop—even though he owns the property. It doesn’t take long for Mac to find out what lies on the other side of the stone wall and locked gate, on which hangs a sign warning visitors to Keep Out!
Topping the list of the ten most haunted places in America, Astaire Castle is associated with two suicides, three mysterious disappearances, and four murders since it was built almost a century ago—and Mac Faraday owns it!
In spite of David’s warning, Mac can’t resist unlocking the gate to see the castle that supposedly hasn’t seen a living soul since his late mother had ordered it closed up after the double homicide and disappearance of Damian Wagner, a world-famous master of horror novels.
“Halloween has always been a fun time,” best-selling author Lauren Carr explains in a note at the beginning of her fifth Mac Faraday mystery. “It’s the time to break out and be someone else. As a child, I would pretend to be one of the Bobbsey Twins searching for clues to lead me to a secret treasure. If I was lucky, it was made up of chocolate. As a teenager, I was Nancy Drew. Always, when October rolled around, I craved mysteries with something extra added—something beyond the normal—something supernatural. As an author, I couldn’t resist taking this one Mac Faraday Mystery on a scary Halloween adventure.”
In this latest installment of Carr’s hit series, what starts out as a quick tour of a dusty old castle turns into another Mac Faraday adventure when Astaire Castle becomes the scene of even more murders. Mac is going to need to put all of his investigative talents to work to sort out this case that involves the strangest characters he has run into yet—including a wolf man. No, we’re not talking about Gnarly.
PROLOGUE
November 2002 – Astaire Castle, top of Spencer Mountain, Deep Creek Lake, Maryland
Shivering, Rafaela turned up the fan for the heater in her old Plymouth. The weather channel was calling for snow. With an eye on the storm clouds heading straight for Spencer Mountain, she picked up the speed a notch. Her car bumped along the worn road cut through the trees and rock to take her to Astaire Castle.
The notion of being trapped at the castle by a winter storm made her curse the day she had accepted the job as housekeeper at the Astaire estate. The young illegal immigrant thought her prayers had been answered by landing the job at the luxurious estate. Not only was it prestigious to work in a castle, but lucrative since Damian Wagner was paying almost twice her normal hourly wage.
What a gem to put on my housekeeping resume! To be hire by only one of the world’s most famous authors of horror books—even more famous than Robin Spencer—to clean an honest-to-goodness castle. So what if the Astaire Castle has a reputation of being haunted? I’ll be making a bundle for cleaning five days a week in the daylight. Besides, I don’t believe in no ghosts.
Rafaela regretted her decision the first time she walked into Astaire Castle.
At first, she dismissed her cleaning supplies moving from where she had left them as forgetfulness. Then there was the time she kept hearing someone whispering her name. She had looked around, but never saw anyone. Same with doors closing or opening or footsteps coming up behind her, and the old-time music and party noises in empty rooms when no one was there—she tried to tell herself that it was all her imagination.
None of that was anything compared to the Wolf Man who she had seen in the dining room mirror while she was cleaning it.
She had heard all about the Wolf Man who lived in the woods surrounding Astaire Castle. The woman with two teenagers who lived in the apartment next to hers was quick to tell her about him. Rafaela had dismissed it all as ghost stories made up by her neighbor’s kids to scare her—until she had seen him with her own two eyes.
That day she ran out of the castle. She returned only after Genevieve, Damian Wagner’s daughter, had promised that her father finish his book and be moving out of the castle by the end of the year—at which time he would pay her a handsome bonus that would give her enough money to visit her family in Brazil for Christmas.
Rafaela caught her breath when her Plymouth entered through the gate at the end of the road to pull into the front courtyard and fountain.
The fountain was off. Damian Wagner had never bothered to turn it on. He wouldn’t notice if it was. He spent his time banging away on his computer in the study on the top floor. He wouldn’t eat if it weren’t for his daughter bringing food to him.
Then there was the editor—Mr. Jansen.
He reminded Rafaela of a bird with his bony frame, high cheekbones over a pointy chin, and thick eyeglasses with his blinking eyes magnified behind them. He sounded like a squawking bird with his high-pitched voice no matter what his mood or what he was saying. Ready to pounce in anticipation of any need from Damian Wagner, he was always lurking nearby.
Damian’s daughter, Genevieve, was as charming as beautiful. She often asked Rafaela about her family in Brazil and about her life in Deep Creek Lake. For the new immigrant to America, Rafaela felt as if she was making a friend who would give her good references for more housekeeping jobs in the resort town of Spencer—more millionaire estates to clean—estates that weren’t haunted.
Rafaela pulled her car around the circular drive and parked at the bottom of the steep steps that led to the front door. When she got out of her car, the wind howled and whipped her long dark hair around her head. The wind actually seemed to want to rip her thin coat off her body. Grabbing her box of cleaning supplies, she squared her shoulders, and sucked up her nerve to go inside.
Need to make this quick. They don’t have enough money to make me stay here during that storm.
The wind yanked the heavy wooden door from her grasp to slam it against the side of the house.
“Stupid door!” Rafaela set the box inside the foyer and went outside to grab the door and pull it shut. “Mr. Wagner! Mr. Jansen! Genevieve! It’s me, Rafaela! Hope I’m not disturbing you.” She picked up the box and made her way through the foyer.
“Raf-aela …”
She stopped. With wide eyes, she peered up the staircase to the second floor balcony. “Is that you, Mr. Wagner?” She paused to listen. “Genevieve?”
“Get out. Now.”
Has to be my imagination. She reassured herself. “There’s no such thing as ghosts. There’s no such thing as ghosts,” she muttered over and over to herself while hurrying to the back of the castle.
“I don’t suppose you had any trick-or-treaters last night, did you?” she called out to ease her nerves with the sound of her own voice. “Not up here I suppose.”
She waited for an answer. She heard footsteps on the floor up above.
The smell of burnt meat came to her nose. It smelled like steak that had been left on the grill for too long.
They must have grilled steaks last night.
“Lots of little children stopped by my apartment.” Feeling braver as she rattled on, Rafaela set the box of cleaning supplies on the kitchen table and gathered together her duster and furniture polish.
Best to start in the living room. The antiques, wood, and silver takes the longest.
Admiring the decades-old priceless china encased in the china closet, she went through the dining room. With her cleaning lady’s eye, she gauged what needed to be addressed on this visit that she may have missed before. She stopped when the blotch of red on the doorframe through the kitchen caught her eye.
What’s that? Catsup?
It wasn’t until she spotted a spot on the floor that she first considered that it wasn’t a condiment, but something much more sinister. She spotted another. Bigger this time … and another.
There was a red pool in front of the kitchen door that opened out onto the back patio and deck that projected out over the rocks to provide a massive view of the valley down below. All of the drops and splatters and pools led to the common source—the fire pit outside.
She saw the flames and smoke wafting in the wind whipping around her where she stood in the open doorway. She stared at the blackened objects in the pit. What at first appeared to be a burnt log projecting out of the flames took shape.
The hand and fingers reached out to her.
The index finger was pointing at her.
Through the rapid beating of her heart, Rafaela could hear the footsteps behind her coming closer.
“Get out!”
His image was reflected in the glass pane of the door. The wild hair. The crazed eyes.
It’s the Wolf Man!
CHAPTER ONE
Present Day—Late-October
The two ATVs shot through the shrubbery that had overtaken the south side of Spencer Mountain’s top. The occasional sunray that managed to peak through the clouds above would catch on the gold trim of the black all-terrain vehicles.
To the left side of the road, Police Chief David O’Callaghan scoured the landscape littered with bare trees for any sign of the old woman they were seeking.
Behind him, Mac Faraday searched the right side of the road. A retired homicide detective with more than twenty-five years of police work under his belt, Mac had looked for more than one missing persons. His experience, plus his availability, made him a regular volunteer to be called in by the Spencer police department when extra manpower was needed—whether it be a missing person or a major murder case.
This search was for an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s who had wandered away from her family at the Spencer Inn. She had been missing for five hours. The sun was starting to set. Soon, the chilly day would turn into a freezing night. Snow was expected and that wasn’t a good thing in the mountains.
They were running out of time.
David held up his hand in a fist to signal a stop and slowed down his vehicle. While waiting for Mac to halt behind him, the police chief removed his helmet and ran his fingers through his blond hair. “Any idea where you are now?” He shot Mac a wicked grin.
Guessing, Mac shot a thumb over his shoulder to indicate the road they had just traveled. “The Spencer Inn is about three miles back that way.”
The police chief nodded his head. “The Spencer Inn is on the north side of the mountain top, looking down on the lake and the valley to the north.”
“But the Spencer Inn owns the whole mountaintop,” Mac said with a question in his voice.
“And you own the Spencer Inn.” David took out his radio. “Therefore, you own this whole mountaintop.” He pressed the button on the earpiece on his Bluetooth to speak into the radio. “Hey, Bogie, we’re up on the southern side of the mountain top. Nothing’s up here. Any luck in your area?”
“Nothing, Chief,” the deputy chief responded.
“We’re going to head back toward the Inn,” David said.
“But we haven’t searched to the end of this road.” Mac pointed further up the trail.
“She’s not up there,” David said in a tone so sharp that it startled him. The police chief shifted his ATV into reverse and backed up.
Even though David O’Callaghan was the chief of police, Mac Faraday was one of Spencer’s wealthiest residents. Descended from the town’s founders, he was unofficial royalty in the small town of Spencer located on the shore of Deep Creek Lake.
Several years younger, David O’Callaghan had much less law enforcement experience than Mac. Being David’s older half-brother added another level of respect to make David tread softly when issuing orders to the retired homicide detective. With the same tall slender build, their familial relationship was evident to the few who were aware of it. The only notable difference was in Mac’s dark hair with a touch of gray showing at his temples.
“We won’t know unless we look,” Mac argued for going further out the tattered road. “We’ve searched for her in all of the usual areas. You can’t—”
“She’s not there.” David’s hard expression ordered him to drop it.
“We won’t know unless we look,” Mac said in a steady tone.
“Check it out,” David said. “Do you see any sign of humans being in this area in recent years? This road is completely overgrown. No sign of hikers. No one comes over to this side of the mountain. We’re talking about an eighty-six year old woman with Alzheimer’s. She’s fragile and on foot. She’d never be able to make it this far.” With a wave of his finger, he ordered Mac to turn around. “We’re going back.”
The order only served to make Mac more suspicious. “What’s up that road?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why are you afraid to go up there?”
David whipped off his sun glasses as if to show him the glare in his blue eyes, which were identical to his. “Drop it, Mac. Forget about this road. Forget about this side of the mountain. Now turn your vehicle around and go back to the Spencer Inn and forget about coming back here ever again. Got it?”
Mac met his glare. “And what if I don’t? Like you said, it’s my property. You can’t stop me from going up there to search … or whatever.”
“Don’t make me shoot you, Mac.”
“Shoot me?” Laughing, he shook his head. “Are you serious?”
Any shred of humor that David had when they started talking was now gone. “If you go out that road, there’s nothing I can do to help you. Have I made myself clear?”
The corner of Mac’s lips curled while he studied the intense nature of David’s order. “Very clear.”
*****
They were halfway back to the command post set up at the Spencer Inn when the call came in from Deputy Police Chief Art Bogart: Mac Faraday’s German shepherd, Gnarly, and Archie Monday, Mac’s housemate and “lady love” as he liked to call her, had found the woman.
Gnarly had followed her scent down the mountain trail. He had zig-zagged through the ski slope to the service shed that managed the electronic chair lift. The elderly woman had forced her way into the shed and fallen asleep in the dark corner.
Gnarly was hero of the day, which was why Mac thought it suspicious when he found the German shepherd hiding in the backseat of his SUV.
“We need to go,” Archie whispered in a hurried voice to Mac. “We need to go now.” There was fear in her deep emerald green eyes. Her pink cap was pulled down to cover her pixie blonde hair and ears. With her petite features, the cap made her resemble Tinker Bell in Peter Pan.
“Why?” Mac received part of his answer when he saw the dog lift his head to peer out of the back window. Mac caught a glimpsed of what appeared to be a cigar in the dog’s mouth, before he laid his pointy ears back to rest flat on his head and ducked back down.
Mac heard a crackling voice yell from the open back of the ambulance. “I’m telling you one of you robbed me. How dare you rob an old woman! You should all be ashamed of yourselves—all of you.” He turned around to peer through the window at where Gnarly was crouched.
Hurrying up to them, David interrupted before he could launch a full investigation. “Mac, Gnarly was the one who found her, wasn’t he?”
Mac hung his head.
The police chief turned to Archie. “That scent that Gnarly was following—we assumed it was her, but could it have been the scent of beef jerky?”
“He did find her,” Archie said. “Whether it was her or the beef jerky she was carrying in her purse doesn’t matter.”
“Thieves! You’re all thieves!” They heard the impact of her purse hitting one of the EMTs.
“Mother, calm down,” her daughter said to her. “I’ll buy you another package of beef jerky on the way to the hospital.”
“What kind of people are you to steal beef jerky for an old woman?” the mother demanded to know.
“Is she going to press charges?” Archie asked David.
“We’ll replace the jerky,” the police chief said.
“Oh, a cover up?” Mac replied.
“Only because it’s Gnarly,” David said. “Bogie is going to stop to buy a pack of jerky on the way to the hospital and somehow slip it into the bottom of her purse while she’s being treated so they’ll think she missed it.”
“Sounds like you’ve been down this road before,” Mac said.
“Only since Gnarly came to town.” David paused before telling him in a soft voice, “Sorry I was so hard on you out there.”
“How were you hard on him?” Archie wanted to know.
“He threatened to shoot me,” Mac said.
“Well, you must have done something to deserve it,” she said.
“It was nothing,” Mac told both of them. To change the subject, he glanced at his watch. “Hey, it’s late and I’m starved. How about dinner here at the Inn? My treat.”
“I’m meeting Finnegan at her place,” David replied. “But you two go ahead. I have to stop by the cottage to shower and change. I’ll take Gnarly back home to Spencer Manor and drop him off.”
Mac wrapped his arms around Archie. “I guess it’s just you and me, kid.”
* * * * *
Mentally, Mac Faraday would often have to pinch himself when entering the Spencer Inn. Before his inheritance from his birth mother, he would never have been able to afford to set foot in the elegant mountaintop resort.
With its five-star rating, the Spencer Inn was the place to go for romance and luxury. There were a dozen other little out of the way places around Deep Creek Lake that couples could patronize to explore the intimacy of love. For those blessed with wealth, and who desired the best on fine food, drink, and romance, then the Spencer Inn was the place to go.
Two years later, Mac was still getting used to receiving the royal treatment when he walked through the front doors. Doors were opened for him. Trying to anticipate the inn owner’s every need or desire, clerks would race to get his favorite cognac or predict what type of dinner he may be in the mood for. If Mac and Archie were dining at his table in the gourmet restaurant at sunset, they would ensure the blinds were set to perfection to block the sun from his eyes, while still allowing him a view of the mountains and the lake below.
Mac Faraday was forty-seven years old when he had learned that the teenaged girl who had given him up for adoption had grown up to become Robin Spencer, an internationally famous murder mystery writer. She had come from a long line of blue bloods, who had founded the upscale resort town of Spencer, Maryland. For a middle-class kid from the suburbs who grew up to become an underpaid homicide detective, the whole experience was still surreal.
Mac didn’t think he would ever get used to it.
The hosts of both the lounge and the restaurant opened their cut-glass doors to hold for them open for Mac and Archie when they spied them crossing the lobby.
Unsure of where they wanted to eat, Mac and Archie paused. They glanced down at their coats and gloves and dirty boats and jeans that they were still wearing from the search. In the luxurious resort, they appeared more out of place than usual.
Archie suggested the lounge.
The host hurried in ahead of them to signal for a server to prepare the corner booth where Mac usually sat when visiting the lounge. By the time they crossed the bar area, the bartender was getting a bottle of Archie’s favorite white wine from Mac’s private collection—2008 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières. He also fetched two wine glasses.
“What happened between you and David?” Archie asked once they were settled in the booth.
“Nothing happened,” Mac insisted in a low voice.
“Liar.”
The bartender showed the gold bottle with the white label to Archie, the wine expert of the couple. After she gave her approval, he uncorked and served the single swallow for her to sample before filling their glasses. “Have you decided on what you would like for dinner this evening?”
Mac turned to Archie for her choice. Dining with Archie Monday was an adventure. As Robin Spencer’s assistant, she had traveled all over the world. Fearless when it came to exotic food, she loved to test the culinary skills of the chief chef.
“What does Iman feel like trying this evening?” Archie replied. “Tell him that I’m drinking a 2008 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières and to surprise me with something to complement it.” With a wicked glance in Mac’s direction, she added, “Make it a dinner for two.”
The bartender went back to the kitchen to deliver her message.
After a toast, Archie took off her cap and ran her fingers through her hair to revive the circulation to her scalp before urging Mac to continue. “You had to do something to make David threaten to shoot you.”
“David wasn’t going to shoot me,” Mac said. “He only threatened to.”
“He’s been down lately,” she said. “He tries to hide it, but I can see it. You do know that Finnegan is leaving for Quantico tomorrow.”
“Yeah, that’s right.” Mac confessed that he had forgotten about David’s latest girlfriend, a former US Marshal, was starting a new career with the Federal Investigative Agency. She was moving to Quantico, Virginia. After her training was completed, she would be transferred to her first assignment, which was definitely not western Maryland.
“How long do you think that relationship is going to last?” Archie asked with a frown. “It’s like Yvonne all over again. It’s all hot and heavy. She gets a big job offer. They say they’ll make it work long distance. After less than six months, she’s sleeping with someone else and dumps David.”
Mac was only half listening. He was remembering the determination, with a hint of something else, etched on David’s face when he turned around and ordered that they were coming back. They were going no further.
Fear. “Something scared him,” Mac said more to himself.
“Do you mean like a bear?”
“David had a weapon,” Mac told her. “We were both armed. If it was a bear, we could have shot it if we had to. No, he didn’t—”
“Mac, they didn’t tell me that you were here.” Jeff Ingle, the manager of the Spencer Inn, was hurrying across the lounge in their direction. “I am so glad they found that lady.” He trotted at a quick pace while trying to maintain the dignity befitting the manager of one of the top hotels and restaurants in country.
“Gnarly found her,” Archie said.
The manager’s grin quivered at the thought of the rambunctious German shepherd. “I’m glad.” He turned to Mac. “Hector is debriefing the Inn’s security team to find out how these types of incidents can be avoided in the future.”
“The woman had Alzheimer’s,” Mac said. “I didn’t get any vibes from her family that they intended to hold us responsible for her wandering off.”
“Well, you never can be too safe,” Jeff said. “If you want to have a word with Hector before—”
Shaking his head, Mac took a sip of his wine. “Tell him to go home and enjoy his evening. We’ll talk about it later.” Jeff was about to turn away when Mac interrupted his departure with a question. “What’s on the Spencer Inn property over on the south side of the mountain?”
Mac didn’t miss Jeff’s posture straightening. It was like a rod had been rammed down his back. Standing up straight, his shoulders tense, the manager turned to face him. “Pardon me?”
“What’s at the end of the road leading over to the other side of the mountain?” Mac asked again. “David and I went out there and I saw signs saying no trespassing, Spencer Inn property—but I don’t know what’s out there.” He shrugged. “I can’t believe I’ve never gone—” He recalled, “You took me on a tour of this whole resort when I inherited it, but you never took me out there.”
“Because there’s nothing out there,” Jeff said firmly.
Mac turned to Archie, who shrugged. “I’ve never been out that way either. The further you go, the more overgrown the road gets—nothing but rocks and trees. I assumed there was nothing.”
“She’s exactly right,” Jeff said. “There’s nothing.”
Mac narrowed his eyes at the manager. “What are you not telling me?” Beyond Jeff, he saw the man whom he knew would be truthful to him.
Hector Langford, the Inn’s chief of security, was a straightforward Australian who had been working for the Spencer Inn for over twenty-five years. He would know what was on the south side of the mountain that could spook David O’Callaghan, the chief of police and Marine officer. After serving two tours overseas, David wasn’t easy to spook.
Mac waited only long enough for Hector to pick up a beer served in the bottle at the bar and take a seat across from them—all under Jeff’s warning gaze—before he asked, “What’s at the end of the road leading to the south side of Spencer Mountain.”
While helping himself to a handful of peanuts from the middle of the table, Hector laughed at Jeff’s glare. “Oh, do you mean the castle?”
Mac’s and Archie’s mouths dropped open. “Did you say ‘castle’?” Mac asked.
Hector nodded his head. Jeff rubbed his face.
“As in moat and alligators and drawbridge … castle?” Mac leaned across the table at him.
“Well,” Hector drawled, “this one doesn’t have any moat or alligators or drawbridge, but it is an honest to goodness castle.”
“Castles are kind of big,” Archie said. “Why can’t we see it from the lake?”
“Because it’s on the other side of the mountaintop facing the valley to the south,” Hector said. “Used to be—back in the old days—that you could see it from the valley below. After about a decade of no one going near it, it’s all overgrown and everyone has forgotten about it. In the winter, when all the leaves are down, if you know it’s there, you can see from the valley floor if you look for it. It’s made of stone. So, if you don’t know about it, with the trees and rocks, you could miss it.”
“Why don’t I know about it?” Mac asked. “I got a list of my holdings and property that I inherited from my mother and I don’t recall seeing any castle on that list. I would have noticed if I owned a castle.”
Jeff answered, “Because it was listed as a vacation rental property under the Spencer Inn. It’s identified as a luxury mountaintop vacation cabin.”
“There’s a big difference between a castle and a cabin,” Archie said.
“Why has everyone been keeping this castle a secret from me?” Mac asked. “Why all the secrecy? Even David refused to go out there this afternoon.”
“He had a bad experience out there,” Hector said with a wave of his hand. “We used to have a devil of a time keeping kids looking for ghosts and scaring each other out of there.”
“There was that boy who disappeared out there,” Jeff said with all seriousness. “David knew him.”
“The Adams kid,” Hector said with a nod of his head. “David was there the night he disappeared.”
“What happened?” Archie asked.
“It was back in 2000,” Hector recalled. “A bunch of young people, David and some of his friends, wanted to have a Halloween party out at the castle. David had just gotten out of college and was going into officer training with the Marines. It was vacant at the time—”
“We were using it as a vacation rental,” Jeff interjected.
“David said there were between twenty to thirty people—all in costume,” Hector said. “We’re not talking high school kids that were out of control. They were responsible young people. After the party, one of his guests was missing. He never made it home.”
“Maybe something happened to him after he left the castle,” Mac said.
Jeff and Hector shook their heads in unison. “No one saw him leave,” Jeff said.
“It wasn’t an open party,” Hector said. “David knew everyone who was there. None of them did anything to him.”
“He disappeared in that castle?” Mac asked.
“Riley Adams,” Jeff recalled the name. “The whole state was looking for him.”
“He was dressed in a werewolf costume,” Hector recalled. “A lot of the guests believed that he was killed or captured by a ghost and we had no trouble keeping kids out after that. He was never found, but unofficially, it was believed that he got drunk or was on something—witnesses said he was acting very strange that night—and wandered off into the woods or fell off the cliff—died—and his body was never found. If he had fallen off the cliff, his body could have been caught in some deep crevices of the rocks where searchers couldn’t find it.”
“I think the ghosts got him,” Jeff said.
“Ghosts?” Mac laughed. “Seriously?”
“Seriously,” Jeff responded without humor. “Look it up. The Astaire Castle is one of the ten most haunted houses in America.”
Excited, Archie tapped Mac’s arm. “I’ve heard of Astaire Castle. I knew it was in Maryland, but I never knew it was here.” She grasped Mac’s arm and squealed. “And you own it!” She dug into her bag to extract her computer tablet to look it up on the Internet. “This is totally wicked!”
Jeff uttered a hollow laugh. “Yeah, congratulations,” he said with heavy sarcasm.
“It’s haunted?” Mac still laughed.
“Not a week goes by that some paranormal expert wants to come film it,” Jeff said. “The answer is always the same. No. After the last murders, Robin ordered the place boarded up and to never let anyone inside it ever again.”
His attention piqued, Mac sat up straight in his seat. “The last murders?”
Hector locked his gaze on Mac and said in a sinister tone, “The last of several.”
.
INTERVIEW
It seems like everybody is writing about zombies these days. What sets yours apart from the herd?
DEAD NEW WORLD is full of large action sequences, thrills readers expect from a zombie novel, and even some hand-to-hand combat between humans and zombies. DNW also has one major caveat: a select few people can survive a zombie bite. These survivors become human-zombie hybrids, capable of communicating with and controlling zombies. The book also does not feature Brad Pitt running around in a scarf.
What is the novel about?
Holt, a seventeen-year-old soldier, must save the woman he loves from a cult leader bent on turning everyone into a zombie. Born shortly after the zombie apocalypse, this hellish world is the only one Holt knows. Before it’s over, he’s going to learn that zombies may not be the most dangerous thing in this… dead new world. Dun-dun-dunnnn! You like how I worked the title into my answer.
Sure. It was awesome. Moving on. Would you touch a zombie on a dare?
No.
What if you were offered a dollar?
Hm… is there a chance it could bite me?
50/50.
Let me think… yeah. For a buck, I can roll with those odds.
Were you inspired by any zombie tales when writing DEAD NEW WORLD?
Absolutely.
Can you elaborate? Please?
Fine, if you’re going to press…
Ryan, YOU are the one making up these questions. You’re only being difficult with yourself.
Fair point.
So?
So what?
Answer the question!
The one about zombie influences?
*slaps forehead* YES.
Actually, every zombie book, movie, or television show I’ve come across influenced me. I love a well-told zombie tale, and I’d sometimes find myself wishing they’d stretch the limits of the genre. Some people don’t like Isaac Marion’s WARM BODIES, but it’s certainly a unique take on the genre. For me, the biggest thing was “Why is the zombie virus, or whatever it is, 100% lethal?” I wanted to explore the possibility of someone surviving. Yes, 28 WEEKS LATER has some people who survive, but aside from an eye changing color and their fluids becoming contagious, what’s different about them? Nothing. I wanted to dig deeper into that idea, while also writing a story that had epic action and fun scares.
Is there anything else you’d like to see in the genre?
Honestly? I wish they hadn’t made a film adaptation of Max Brooks’s WORLD WAR Z. It’s by far the best zombie novel ever written (mine is a somewhat distant second), and while the film isn’t bad, it’s not WORLD WAR Z. That novel needs to be turned into a 13-15 episode miniseries for HBO, with each chapter being a different episode. It would be the greatest zombie story ever filmed. It can still be done too. Maybe if enough people buy DNW, I can go up to Brad Pitt and his scarf, and offer to put up the money to make it for HBO. It can happen.
No it can’t.
You’re right. But a guy can dream, right?
Sure. Have your dream. Is there anything else you’d like to say about DEAD NEW WORLD?
DNW is the first in a trilogy. The second novel is DARK NEW WORLD, and the finale is THE NEW WORLD. Each novel will dig deeper into this world I’ve created. They will also further explore the psychological and emotional impact of surviving the zombie virus. It’s all quite exciting!
