GUEST POST

Cassie Scot: Looking Forward

 When I talk about Cassie Scot I’m usually not talking about the book, Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective. I’m usually talking about the entire series. This is my third book, but my first series, so it has been an interesting adjustment for me. In my mind, Cassie’s story is complete, even though for the reader it has barely begun.

In fact, Cassie’s story is complete. There are four volumes in the series, all written, all under contract, and all pending release within the next year or so. Each of the volumes is framed by a self-contained mystery, which should give the reader some sense of closure at the end. Personal, romantic, and familial problems remain, however, and these issues are what I think of as Cassie’s story. The first book is about Cassie solving a murder/missing person mystery. The series is about Cassie discovering who she is and what she wants. I suppose that part doesn’t play as well in a teaser, but I think it’s relevant. To some extent, we all strive to figure out who we are and how to accept ourselves. This is never more true than when faced with the disapproval or disappointment of parents – something Cassie knows all-too well.

Cassie isn’t the only one going through a period of self-discovery. To a lesser extent Evan Blackwood is trying to figure out who he is and what he wants. Well, he’s sure about one thing – and if you’ve read the epilogue to book one you know what that is. He’s confused about much of the rest. In stark contrast to Cassie, Evan has a lot of magical power and he doesn’t want to be like his father – using that power for his own wealth/comfort and little else. At the same time, Evan is used to getting his way and he has the power to take most of what he wants. On the surface this may seem like a good thing, but in Secrets and Lies, book two in the Cassie Scot series, he will learn differently. It was a challenge to show him going through this sort of transformation from Cassie’s point of view, but I hope the reader sees it.

When I look at the series as a whole, one of the choices I have often found myself questioning is the use of vampires in the first book. This may seem like an odd thing to say. I mean, it’s urban fantasy. Of course it has vampires! Well…

I didn’t plan to write the first book right away. In those early weeks, I thought I would write a long short story or novella as a sort of proof of concept. There were a lot of important details popping around in my mind – Cassie character, her family, the town, the rules of magic, the love interest – somewhere in the middle of all that I decided to test the waters with vampires because it’s simple. Everyone knows them. They don’t require a lot of thought. I don’t know when they became permanent, but somewhere along the line I knew I was writing a whole novel instead of a short story, and by then the plot had stuck.

Vampires are not at all important to the overall story. It’s not the last you’ll see of them, but they don’t have a huge part to play. If you’re a vampire fan, sorry, but hopefully you love Cassie enough to stick with her. Those who are sick of vampires in fantasy, bear with me. And know that these vampires are Stoker-esque (and not even a little bit sparkly 🙂 ).

“There is nothing so evil in the world as what humans can do to one another.” – Edward Scot (Cassie’s father). This may have almost seemed like a throwaway comment in book one, but it wasn’t. It definitely becomes important later on, and it’s something I firmly believe. I’ve never thought fantasy novels needed literal demons to fight. Give a human being power, and let’s see what he decides to do with it. History has shown us that it isn’t always pretty.

The last time I revised the first book in this series, I had completed the final volume. This means that I had my plan fully formed and implemented. There are a couple of little things in the first book that you probably won’t even think about unless you go back and reread it sometime after you finish the series. Then you’ll think, “Oh, she did have a plan!”

I love it when authors do that. I hope I’ve pulled it off to your satisfaction as well.

 Book Two Teasers:

 1. Cassie is going to learn something very important about her mother that she never knew.

2. Kaitlin and Madison will take on bigger roles, and each will develop a problem of her own.

3. Edward Scot (Cassie’s dad) and Victor Blackwood (Evan’s dad) will come face to face. Their mutual enmity will not be in doubt.

4. The reader will learn one more of the reasons why Edward hates Victor.

5. The mystery will be the search for two teenage girls who went missing from a summer camp.

6. The life debt Cassie owes Evan will be a big deal.

Going Thru Hell by T.J. Loveless
Publication date: October 1st 2013
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, New Adult

SYNOPSIS

KYLIE RIPPONS is a SpongeBob pajama bottom wearing, Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 driving, USDA certified klutz, coffee-addicted mortal, seeking a normal life despite the constant harassment of gods and the ability to braid time.

Kylie sees actions and consequences as bright, shining timelines in her head. Born with the power to gather the strings and braid them into a new chain of events, she is the weapon of choice for many pantheons in their never ending wars. But using the ability requires fuel, and for a mortal, it means a piece of her soul.

One Mesopotamian goddess, the only forsaken Valkyrie, and a rogue, immortal, Berserker ally with Kylie. Constant harassment forces the group to take drastic action, and go on the offensive. She must braid time to save friends, and herself, as the gods drive them into situations in which she must choose: braid time, save her friends, and lose pieces of her mortal soul, or become slave to the pantheon of her choice.

Deception by an old friend sends Kylie fleeing to her parents’ home, where she hid her son, Riot. She’s too late, the gods found Riot and hold him hostage. Searching for him, Kylie experiences the most devastating betrayal of all.

Kylie faces her worst nightmare: kill a friend and permanently hide Riot, leaving him motherless, or become a slave in exchange for his safety, leaving her soulless and insane.

If only the gods allowed for personal choice.

GUEST POST

When I saw this guest post as one of the option to choose for this tour, I jumped all over it. T J Loveless had me laughing out loud as I read it. Other than the klutzy part, I could totally relate to her. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Where I Fit In

When I began writing Going Thru Hell, I had a little bit of a conundrum. One, I am far from girlie. Oh, granted, I do love a great pair of boots. But put more than a cowboy heel on it and I’ll break a leg. Dresses and I don’t get along. I have make-up, I’m just not sure where. My hair has two styles: Long and in a ponytail, or short and pulled back with a headband. I quit coloring it and let the gray stand out loud and proud. Okay, okay, more like lazy and why bother.

Two, writing about a woman who loves all those things proved to be impossible. I couldn’t relate in any way. My idea of dressing up is a pair of slacks, a long blouse two sizes too big, and sandals that might, or might not, match. I’ve been known to wear shoes of two different shades of brown. I don’t pay enough attention.

Kylie steamrolled her way into my head, pacing, impatient, full of ideas. She wanted at least one fancy outfit, and I spent three days researching Barney’s of New York, and calling all my fashionista girlfriends for advice. But for the most part, I based a good bit of Kylie on my own personality.

I love pajamas and fuzzy slippers. Fun cartoon pajama bottoms make me feel good. I can actually coordinate jeans and t-shirts with one of five pairs of Sketchers.

And after reading tons of books with sophisticated femme fatales, I wanted to do something different. So I created Kylie to be as klutzy as me. The fall out of bed in the morning? Yep, I do it at least once a week. I did once cause severe rugburn on my face after one particular fall and slide on new carpet. I also gave her my addiction to caffeine. Mmm … coffee. Especially a large mocha latte, with an extra espresso shot and a few pumps of raspberry flavoring from The Paramount Café downtown.

I prefer trucks to cars, they seem to last longer. A bit of a confession: I’m on vehicle number fifty-eight. You read that right. I’ve put more vehicles in the ground than I like to admit. Trucks/SUVs seem to last at least a little longer.

Neither Kylie, nor I, have a brain-mouth filter. Often when I speak, whatever is in my head just voices itself.

But there is where it ends. I’m a people person, an extrovert. I laugh often, and don’t brood. I don’t back away from a fight.

I think, as authors, we all interject a bit of ourselves into certain characters. Sometimes the bad guy, most often the good guy. It’s fun, and helps keep us connected to our own imaginations. Not to mention, if you already know the character, it makes it easier to write.

Besides, it’s fun to make family and friends call me up and go, “I remember the time you did that!”

Thank you T J for sharing.

The Tempest Murders

by p.m. Terrell

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 BLURB
 A provocative story of a love that spans centuries, of soul mates found, lost and reunited… and the lengths to which one man will go to change their destiny.
Irish Detective Ryan O’Clery is working a series of homicides in America when he discovers a journal written by an uncle, Constable Rian Kelly, five generations earlier. The journal detailed the same type of murders as the worst storm in Ireland’s history slammed into the island in 1839.
As Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coastline, Ryan discovers even the killer’s description matches his cases exactly. And as he falls in love with television reporter Cathleen Reilly, he begins to wonder if she is the reincarnation of Caitlin O’Conor, Rian Kelly’s lover—the woman who was lost to the killer as the storm raged in Ireland—and if he is the reincarnation of Constable Rian Kelly.
Now he’s in a race to rescue Cathleen before the killer finds her—or is history destined to repeat itself?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GUEST POST

 p m terrell shares her thoughts. Thank you p for being here and lettting my readers and followers learn a little about you, the author.

WHEN A BOOK DEMANDS TO BE WRITTEN

 There are times when thinking of the next scene—or the next sentence—is like pulling teeth. Then there are other times, like The Tempest Murders, when a book demands to be written and the pull is so great that it can’t be ignored.

I first became interested in Ireland when I was researching my family’s genealogy with my father. Mary Neely’s family had come from Ulster in the 1700’s and when Mary was just 19 years old, she traveled to Fort Nashborough with 300 other settlers through hostile Chickamauga Indian Territory. Just four months after she arrived, she was captured by Shawnee warriors and held as a slave for three long years. She was resilient, courageous and determined to escape, which she eventually did, traveling on foot over hundreds of miles to be reunited with the remnants of her family.

Her story made me wonder why some people will give up everything they have ever known to travel to a country they’d never seen before, to customs totally foreign to them, and to a language so unlike their own. My ancestors the Neelys did not migrate due to a potato famine but they had been successful businessmen in Ulster. They heard that America’s streets were “paved with gold” and off they went to make their fortune.

Things didn’t turn out as they’d planned and while Mary was in Shawnee captivity her mother and brother were killed. Her father had been killed and scalped when Mary was captured. When the two books I wrote about her plight, Songbirds are Free and River Passage, were released I heard from a number of Neely descendents all around the world—including some cousins who had never left Ireland for America.

VBT_The_Tempest_Murders_Book_Cover_Banner_copyAs I delved into their destinies and how they differed from their American cousins, I was almost instantly surrounded by the myths and legends of Ireland. One legend that grabbed my attention and refused to let it go was the tale of The Night of the Big Wind. It occurred on the Day of Epiphany in 1839, a day when some Irish believed the end of the world would come. It began as a beautiful day but by mid-afternoon the skies had grown completely black. A storm had developed over the Atlantic and in the days before weather forecasting and mass communication was available, the storm hit the island by surprise with winds so fierce it swept the Atlantic Ocean all the way across to the Irish Sea. Hundreds drowned and thousands lost their homes, their businesses, their crops and animals, and their way of life.

It was that storm that formed the backdrop for The Tempest Murders. The book begins on January 6, 1839 and as it slips back and forth between Rian Kelly and the lover he lost to a killer at the height of the storm, it also follows an Irish immigrant, Ryan O’Clery, and a serial murder case he is investigating as Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coast.

I live just over a hundred miles from the coast in the town portrayed in The Tempest Murders—Lumberton, North Carolina. At one point, one of the models showed the hurricane hitting landfall and moving straight over our heads. I was by myself at the time and I vividly remember not only the hurricane but the tornadoes it spawned, the roar of the “freight train” which was really the fierce winds overhead, and huddling in the closet with my three dogs. The extreme weather Ryan O’Clery faces when he is trying to reach his lover, Cathleen, to prevent her from becoming the killer’s next victim is based on real conditions that I have encountered over the years, as I’ve been caught in a hurricane’s or tornado’s path.

Writing about Ireland and about an Irish immigrant has only deepened my love affair with the Emerald Isle, and I am looking forward to writing more about this magical place.

EXCERPT

 “I know you too well,” Claire said. “You’re wanting the story of Caitlín O’Conor, aren’t you?”

“Who?”

She smiled. “Her name was Caitlín O’Conor. She was supposedly the great love of Ríán Kelly’s life. It was a star-crossed love story. Her father was a prominent man in the village and Ríán was a ‘lowly county inspector’ and though they were deeply in love, her father would not permit Ríán to ask for her hand in marriage.”

He felt his chest tighten and he sipped his coffee to avoid Claire’s piercing eyes.

“The tale is that they sneaked around for years; everybody knew it. Everybody except Caitlín’s father, that is. They were madly in love.” She sighed wistfully.

“What happened?” He kept his eyes on his coffee. “Did she marry someone else?”

“Her father died. Quite unexpectedly. Heart simply stopped. And without him in the way, they were clear to be married.” She brushed non-existent crumbs from the countertop before continuing. “He asked for her hand in marriage on New Year’s Eve. Let’s see, I believe it was 1838. Yes, that’s right. December 31, 1838.”

“How can you be so certain of the date?”

“Because seven days later, Caitlín was dead.”

His head jerked up and he stared into Claire’s eyes. They were as green as the fields of Ireland and now she cocked her head and eyed him curiously.

“He’d gone to Dublin, so the story goes,” she continued slowly.

“Ríán Kelly.”

“Aye. He’d been called away on business. And as Fate would have it, the great flood came while he was gone and Caitlín was swept away. It was January 6, 1839—Epiphany.” Her voice took on a whispered note as though she was telling a ghost story. “There were those in the faith who had forecast the end of the world would occur on January 6, 1839—the day of Epiphany. So when the air grew completely still, so still they could hear the voices of neighbors miles apart, there were some who thought the end was near.”

He waited for her to continue. His cheeks were growing flush and he could feel beads of sweat beginning to pop out across his brow. “What happened then?”

“By nightfall, there were gale force winds. They moved from the western coast of Ireland all the way to Dublin, where Ríán Kelly had traveled. Some said the winds were accompanied by an eerie moan, a rumbling of sorts. But not thunder; it was a sound never heard before nor since. It increased as the winds grew. And then the northern sky turned a shade of red that had never been seen before.

“Well, so the myth goes, Ríán Kelly left Dublin immediately. It was a miracle he made it back to the village at all. He traveled through the night, in the rain and the hail, with the winds all about him. Bridges had been washed away; the wind had been so strong—stronger than anything Ireland had experienced in more than three hundred years—so strong that it whipped the Atlantic into a fury and pushed it all the way across the island. Streams and creeks became raging rivers. Whole villages were wiped out. Even some of the castles were beyond repair.”

He rested his elbows on the counter and put his head in his hands.

“You’re sure you don’t want to lie down, Re? You look as if you might faint.”

“I’m fine,” he said. “What happened when Ríán Kelly reached his village?”

“It was gone. Oh, there were a few buildings still intact. The church, for one. But Caitlín O’Conor’s home had been washed away. There was no sign of Caitlín.”

“So that’s where the story ends, does it?”

“Oh, no. I suppose it’s where it just begins.”

PRAISE FOR BLACK

“A sadistically good writer.” – The Kindle Book Review
default-divider
“I haven’t been this excited by a new series in a long time. I’ve read five or six Blake books, which were all very good, but he absolutely nails the hard-boiled genre. He has a knack for creating memorable characters and the main character Black and his assistant will not be forgotten anytime soon. I’ve always enjoyed Blake’s humor, but the dialogue between the two aforementioned characters is hysterical. Finally – as usual, Blake moves the book along at a nice pace with enough twists, turns, and adventure to keep any reader engrossed. I can’t wait for the next one in this series.” Trenchgold, Amazon 5 Star review.
default-divider
“I’ve read several of Blake’s books and this is my favorite. It features well developed characters, great humor, and a fun plot. The writing is also fantastic. I especially love the book’s treatment of LA, and its characters, more often than not leftovers from broken dreams. If you love Elmore Leonard, and who doesn’t, you’re going to love Black. Five stars.”Wright Forbucks, Amazon 5 Star review.

EXCERPT

 Suddenly, the scent of burning embers swirled over the courtyard and the wind settled, blowing Lucy’s loose hair around her face. A ground-vibrating roar followed, making every human eye search the sky for the source.

What was it?

Lucy’s well-honed survival instincts went on high alert just as a large SUV-sized black object careened through the air and landed on the raised stage with a thud.

Grannies, kids, and call girls hit the ground screaming.

Heart pounding, Lucy crouched with the crowd. The acrid scent of smoldering intensified. Pounding from the stage rattled Lucy’s eardrums. Whatever had landed there was moving and alive. On the platform, clawed feet stomped, and the creature’s matte black skin stretched over powerful muscles and bones. Black wings unfurled across the stage, and the animal roared again at the crowd, baring razor-sharp white fangs.

A dragon.

Holy Mary, Joseph, and Peter. A freakin’ dragon.

SYNOPSIS

A Kiss Beneath the Veil

Daphne became a ghost whisperer when the Veil was lifted and the others came out of hiding. Now she’s intent on using her new ability to track down a serial killer who’s been terrorizing children in her small town. Isaac is an ancient vampire pursuing Daphne as she runs from his love and the promise of his immortal kiss. He will do anything to prove that they belong together, forever, including slaying a real monster for her.

A Taste for Moonlight

Anne gave up on finding her Prince Charming exactly one divorce, two kids, and (ahem) several pounds ago. Besides, she’s too busy building her business and being a good mom to even miss love anymore…usually…sometimes. But all that changes when she finds herself tricked into going to a werewolf strip club on her birthday. That’s when Thomas sees her for the first time and realizes that she is the mate he’s searched centuries for.

 A Darker Shade of Dawn

Roschana doesn’t have many friends. Maybe it’s that whole I-eat-sex-for-breakfast thing? Too sexy? Too creepy? Whatever. She can’t help that she’s a succubus or that when most people find out about her eating habits they usually get the wrong impression and bolt, or drop trou on the spot. Eeww. But Thomas isn’t like most people. He’s a nerd who understands the stars better than he understands people. Who knew that the fastest way to a succubus’s heart was through a telescope?

 A Heart of Stone and Fire

Athena is dying. There, she admitted it. So now what? In a world made topsy turvy by the lifting of the Veil, a girl ought to be able to find a cure for something as banal as cancer. And if she can’t? Well, then there’s always shopping. Gestein has guarded Athena since their paths first crossed when she was just a child. He would do anything to save her from the fate she has in store, but he’s bound to honor the vow he made not to interfere in her life. And a gargoyle always keeps his word.

 A Constant Rapture

Constance is searching for a miracle; because that’s the only way she’ll be able to save her little sister and herself from the Ochi’s grasp. Xavier is working as a stage magician on the Vegas strip when Constance barges in and disrupts his carefully ordered plans: work, drink, rinse, repeat. He doesn’t see how his one shite talent could possibly help in her search until he’s already neck deep in Ochi mercenaries. By then there’s the complication of him starting to fall for his dream girl…

 ABOUT THE AUTHOR

aimee_roseland_picI was born and raised near Las Vegas, NV and grew up dreaming of rain. I also dreamt of heroes and villains and the women that inspired the best and worst in them.

It seemed like every book I read as a teen was a classic bodice-ripper. Wimpy-virgin-heroine always making bad choices and getting herself in trouble, cue the macho hero, yadda yadda yadda. Those books are what inspired me to write my own stories, not because I loved those retro-romances, but because I constantly found myself tossing them aside and fuming. I would think of all the ways the story would have been better: if she had just picked up the sword and stabbed the bad guy when she had the chance…

I LOVE writing and I love the new direction that fiction has taken over the last decade. So many amazing, strong female leads now! And so many new writers that finally have a voice in the indie publishing community.

I was blessed with a wonderful husband who supports my passion for writing and reading and who really helped me focus my desire to publish my work. When I’m not busy enjoying my daughter and husband I’m usually developing a new story idea or sneaking in a bit of free time with my favorite authors.

I’m a bit of a hermit, they called it being “shy” when I was a kid, but I love hearing from fans. I also love ferrets, hiking, chili dark chocolate, strong coffee, nursing mamas, and rain.

Budding illusionist Anna Van Housen is on top of the world: after scoring a spot on a prestigious European vaudeville tour, she has moved to London to chase her dream and to join an underground society for people like her with psychic abilities. Along with her handsome beau, Cole Archer, Anna is prepared to take the city by storm.

But when Anna arrives in London, she finds the group in turmoil. Sensitives are disappearing and, without a suspect, the group’s members are turning on one another. Could the kidnapper be someone within the society itself—or has the nefarious Dr. Boyle followed them to London?

As Cole and Anna begin to unravel the case and secrets about the society are revealed, they find themselves at odds, their plans for romance in London having vanished. Her life in danger and her relationship fizzling, can Anna find a way to track down the killer before he makes her his next victim—or will she have to pay the ultimate price for her powers?

A gifted illusionist, Anna assists her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums, and mentalists in 1920’s New York. As the illegitimate daughter of Harry Houdini—or so Marguerite claims—sleight of hand illusions have never been a challenge for Anna. The real trick is keeping her own gifts secret from her opportunistic mother. Because while Marguerite’s own powers may be a sham, Anna possesses a true ability to sense people’s feelings and foretell the future.

But as Anna’s powers intensify, she begins to experience frightening visions of her mother in peril, which leads her to explore the powers she’s tried so long to hide. And when a mysterious young man named Cole moves into the flat downstairs, introducing Anna to a secret society that studies people with gifts like hers, she is forced to confront her past and rethink everything she’s ever known. Is her mother truly in danger, or are Anna’s visions merely illusion? And could the great Houdini really be her father, or is it just another of Marguerite’s tricks?

From Teri Brown comes a world bursting with magic, with romance, and the temptations of Jazz Age New York—and the story of a girl about to become the mistress of her own destiny.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’m not sure who to tell you about here because I’m actually two people rolled into one. As a responsible mother of teens, I show one persona to the world. That person is driven, conservative and level headed. But the other part of me just never grew up. She is rebellious, impulsive and curious.

It’s hard being both these people. They’re often at odds.

The mother part of me knows I should put a cap on how many animals we take in. The teen part of me wants to save them all. We have five cats and two dogs. Who do you think is winning?

Even now. The mother part wants to make a meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and a tossed salad. The teen part wants to order a pizza, work on my website and check my Facebook.

Luckily, though my two halves don’t always agree, both of us live happily in Portland, Oregon, with a husband and too many animals. And we both love to write and write and write.

Phantom Eyes by Scott Tracey photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

Every child in Belle Dam is taught about the feud from an early age. There are ‘our’ people and ‘their’ people. Friends and enemies. Associates and strangers. It’s the kind of town where eyes are always watching, and you don’t need a reason to sell out your neighbors.

But the feud is a lie. As a new wave of fury sweeps through the town, creating a third front to an already overtaxed war, Braden has been broken worse than ever. His innocence? Shattered. His heart? Crushed. His magic? Gone. His new life? Ruined. And this is only the beginning.

Beneath the city lay deep wellsprings of power. The one who controls them is the one who will win the feud. In a city filled with puppet masters, Braden must elude their strings and end the feud once and for all. But first, he must outsmart his father, evade Catherine’s dark magic, regain what was stolen from him, trick a phantom who refuses to die, and foil a demon’s master plan.

Even then, he may not survive. Because power is a problem, and victory comes with a cost…

Scott wrote his autobiography at age six, and its all been downhill since then.
