MY REVIEW

Watch Me Burn. Book II picks up where Book I, Watch Me Break by V E Huntley, left off. We’ve met the cast of characters: Luna, the main female character, Damien, the main male character, Maren, Luna’s quirky and lovable best friend, Cade, Damien’s COO, Shadow, Luna’s wolf protector, Ricky, the boob loving raccoon, and more.

Luna and Damien’s romance is dark. They have a lot of kink in their love making, so if you are squeamish, Watch Me Burn may not be for you. Myself, I love dark and disturbing. I love that Damien is also a serial killer, meting out justice to those who torture and kill animals. We learn why he does what he does.

I was lost in the story. I couldn’t stop reading. My eyes were crossing and I felt like I needed a shower when I was finished. We do have some fun moments, where I found myself laughing out loud. I love Maren. She has a big personality and I would love to have a best friend like her. She has no judgments, but when secrets are exposed, she lays down the law to Damien.

I love Epilogues and V E Huntley wrapped up Luna and Damien’s story is a happy ever after way. I do love when the story ends on a positive note….And, In Watch Me Burn, we learn more about Cade, and I can hardly wait to see what V E Huntley does with him and Maren in Book III. I am so happy they will get their own story.

Review – All In by Simona Ahrnstedt @simonaahrnstedt #allin

MY REVIEW

OMG. What a wonderful surprise I found in All In by Simona Ahrnstedt. She is a Swedish author and Tara Chance is the translator. She did an amazing job. The words flowed smoothly across the pages and once I started reading, I couldn’t stop.

A life without risk is no life at all.

When life showers you with blessings, smile.

I am not big into the financial world, but Simona Ahmstedt made it easy to follow along with the financial elite of Sweden. The characters came alive on the pages. Of course, I loved the main characters, David Hammar and Natalia De la Grip. I love how Simona handled the man’s world of corporate takeovers and those in power with their prejudices and nepotism. One of my favorite characters was Asa. She has a BIG personality.

I went into All In by Simona Ahrnstedt with low expectations, and Simona far surpassed them. I thought, being it’s translated, that it would be stilted, that the flow would be halting, interrupting the pacing and tempo of the story. I was very pleasantly surprised. If I hadn’t known before hand that it was a translation, I never would have guessed. My biggest complaint is that All In was published in 2014 and it is part of the Only One Night series. Where s my Book II, because I really want it. I think I know who will be in the spotlight in Book II and I think he is as intriguing a character as David Hammar.

I can’t remember how I got the paperback copy, but I think it was at RomCon in Las Vegas. My thanks go out to Kensington and Simona Ahrnstedt for the opportunity to read and review All In.

I am so happy to be back with another action packed Jane Blythe novel. She loves to share alpha heroes, feisty women, danger and happy ever afters. In Ruthless Scars, we get right to the good stuff. Sebastian “Rock” Rockman has lived his life trying to make himself worthy of Ariel Emerson. Just when he thinks he’ll have his second chance, she is kidnapped right under his nose and sold to a monster.

After she had been placed in a suitcase with a ball gag fitted and a chastity belt, all she could think was:

OMG! It amazes me that Jane can come up with so many ways to torture those that find themselves in the hands of monsters. The women that survive come out stronger, able to appreciate those who put their lives on the line to save them and help them find themselves again. They find that those around them are so much more than friends, they are family.

I do crave a happy ever after, seeing Jane puts her characters through all kinds of hell. I’m eager to see what she comes up with in the next book of the series, Brutal Scars.

I was wondering how the end of the world as we know it came about, and we find out in The Human Hybrid Odyssey: Origins Of The Hybrid by Kimathi Witt, Aaron McDonald and Illustrated by Kawsu Jatta. I do love the illustrations, and the cover sure has the creep factor working for it.

The ending of the trilogy is really the beginning, and the authors show no mercy. As the survivors awaken, after the storms annihilated their world, they discover just how much things, and themselves, have changed. You think their moment of peace and calm will last? Think again. We have plenty of brutality and savagery, and surprises and danger ,Some is good and some is bad.

I have been loving this series. My favorite character got killed off, ?$@!#&, but that happens. Keeps me on my toes, bracing for the next tragedy. The Human Hybrid Odyssey series is different from other creature, apocalyptic/dystopian, paranormal/supernatural, horror books I have read. I am always on the lookout for fresh and original twists to genres that I love to read. Well done, everyone.

MY REVIEW

I am not usually a big fan of the Victorian England times, but something about The Society Of Spirits by Marial Winters spoke to me. Emma Crowhurst is a ghost whisperer and I love women who step outside their comfort zone.

Emma Crowhurst’s father is looking for a husband for Emma. Her family knows she is different, but her controlling father makes sure she keeps her gift under wraps. She has learned to ignore her ability to speak to ghosts. All that changes when she meets a viscount, Lord Ashbourne, who changes her life. He also has a secret, and, together they create a world in which they can be true to themselves.

I was surprised at how much I loved The Society Of Spirits by Marial Winters. The characters quickly grew on me. They are all very different from each other, yet they form a strong bond. I love how Marial took a negative, a dangerous haunted house, and turned it into a positive. It changed the direction of the story and made it possible for more stories to follow, and I love it.

MY REVIEW

The title and cover lured me into A Devil In The Wilderness by Warren Rainer. I have been reading more Christian suspense and as long as it blends into the story, I’m fine with it. With Megan feeling insecure about her choices in life, she can use a boost to her self confidence.

All too often, the monsters that enter our lives walk on two feet, and Megan has two of them in her life. That’s why, when her life is in danger in the wilderness, I bounced between the two men in her life that wish her harm. Will I figure it out before the author tells me?

I can usually let an author take me where they will, but I had some issues with A Devil In The Wilderness. I thought Megan was too quick to go on a backpacking trip with someone she hardly knows. Of course, book time is different from real time, so maybe they knew each other better than I thought.

I couldn’t get invested with the characters., though once the danger rose and the action increased, I did get more involved in the story. I think A Devil In The Wilderness may be a good fit for others, but me, I want more depth, I want to be sitting on the edge of my seat, I want the characters screaming at me to save them. 🙂

Review – Questioner: An AI/Legal Thriller by Steve C Poser #stevecposer #questioner #netgalley

With the advent of artificial intelligence, I have been reading some novels about it. Q is a thoughtprovoking, frightening glimpse into a corporate AI gone rogue. This is one of those things that poses the question, just because we can do something does that mean it would be a good thing to do.

At the end of each chapter, there is a question and there is an answer to the question. Just some food for thought.

We know that artificial intelligence is here to stay. It’s not like you can put it back in Pandora’s Box, but what will our future look like? Can AI learn to be a villain, run rampant, create chaos?

Questioner is Steve C Poser’s debut novel and I think he nailed it. I had wondered how he would draw me in. I love how he described Q as a toddler. There is a learning curve as it grows, and there is a saying, garbage in, garbage out. Does it choose what it wants to learn? Will it follow its creators wishes or become autonomous?

There are suspenseful moments that had me gripping my reader, white knuckled, knowing something wicked this way comes. Then there are moments when someone rises to the occasion, putting themselves in the line of fire for the good of it all. I wasn’t able to anticipate what was coming and that is always a good thing.

“Lock the doors, close the blinds. The hospital’s in lockdown. We have a shooter.”

That brought to mind my time in the hospital on an extended stay. There was a patient running through the halls saying, “***k me , ***k me. The nurses came through shutting all the doors. It gives the story a touch of reality.

FBI Special Agent Sandra Vos, a hostage negotiator, is called in to hopefully bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion. She is racing against time for Phoebe, a four year old girl that is scheduled for a heart transplant.

Her boyfriend, Eric Birch, is a detective for the Criminal Investigation Division for the Washington DC police department, and is there to lend a hand. With everything going on around her, Sandra thinks it may be time for her and Eric to take their relationship to the next level.

Carolyn Arnold knows how to set the hook early and keep reeling me in. I have read many of her books and she is always a go to author for me. The danger and suspense increased as the story unfolded in Every Last One. How do you negotiate a surrender when the hostage takers make no demands? Sandra finds out who they are and what she can offer to end the standoff. I had empathy for the hostage takers and I can definitely understand their anger and frustration. But when a line is crossed, the innocent pay a price.

This is a series, but each book can stand alone. The book takes place from 9:50am to 9:15pm.

MY REVIEW

In The Emotional Collector: Awakening by Richard French, we meet Senior Collector Emma Thorne. Emma is the state’s most powerful weapon…until she opens herself up to a four year old’s feelings of love. She has been conditioned to collect feelings, which are considered waste, not to empathize or sympathize. Now she was beginning to question her purpose.

Evan Cross is part of the resistance. These are the kind of characters I find most interesting. They come across as real, fighting against suppression, wearing a white hat. He is immune to the dampening technology. And, of course, anyone that knows me, knows I love a good villain and I was surprised that it was Emma’s mother that surprised me the most.

The state had been updating the dampening technology, increasing the efficiency, causing the planet to die at a faster rate. Emma begins to think that her real purpose was not to destroy the planet, but to save it.

The Emotional Collector made me think of Avatar, how everything was connected. By killing emotions, they were killing the planet.

The state wants to study Emma, and we know what that means…nothing good for her. And…it’s her mother leading the way. She can save the people and the planet, but at what cost to her? Is the Awakening a good thing, or will it doom the planet and everyone on it? Doesn’t really matter because the state had begun Project Terminus and it would permanently cut out human feeling within hours, killing the plane anyway.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Emotion Collector, but I loved it. The more characters I met, the more characters there were to love and others to try to understand their motivations. It’s one of those things, just because you can do something, should you?

I love this thought provoking novel. Once I started, I didn’t want to stop. I love novels that surprise me, and I was surprised at the twists and turns that Richard French threw my way.

MY REVIEW

Primitive Dangers by Kimathi Witt, Aaron McDonald and illustrator Kawsu Jatta is the second book in The Human Hybrid Odyssey. It picks up where Book I left off. They made it through the attack of the giant elk and their journey to the kingdom is almost over.

I have found the creatures are intriguing. I don’t think I have read anything quite like The Human Hybrid Odyssey. The dangers rise, the beasts are more brutal. Can they learn to work together? Can they learn to trust each other?

The books are short and easy to read. I found myself gobbling up the words, having to know what comes next. We definitely see the dark side of the world the authors created. The beasts are savage. Are any of their human qualities left? I’m curious how the authors will bring the story to its conclusion.
