SYNOPSIS

Racecar driver Kate Reilly is suited up and ready for the start of the legendary 24 Hours of Daytona. But what’s ahead will test her will and nerve more than any other endurance race.

Even before the green flag waves over Daytona International Speedway, Kate receives word her boyfriend Stuart is fighting for his life after a hit-and-run earlier in the day. Still reeling from that news, Kate must absorb other shocks in the race’s opening hours, including an on-track accident with tragic consequences and an eyewitness who claims Stuart was run down deliberately by someone from the race paddock.

Alternating stints behind the wheel of her Corvette racecar with stretches of quizzing colleagues and searching for clues, Kate taps every possible source—friend, foe, and family—to find out who’s after Stuart and why. As the race clock counts down to zero hour, Kate must come to terms with her own fears about the past anddecide who she’s willing to trust. Only then can she identify who’s willing to kill to keep a secret buried—and stop them before they lash out again.

MY REVIEW

Avoidable Contact by Tammy Kaeler is about the twenty four hour Daytona endurance race. Anyone that knows racing, knows that Daytona opens the racing season with a week long celebration. I love Nascar racing, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read for review the ARC of Avoidable Contact.

Kate Reilly had a bad feeling as the police officer approached her. He asked if she knew Stuart Telarday very well. He was her ex boyfriend and the Series Vice President of Operations. He had been in a hit and run car accident. Was it deliberate? Who, or better yet why, would anyone want him dead?

The Daytona endurance race consists of the car, drivers and pit crew running for twenty four hours straight. There are four drivers that alternate. The team stuck together and supported her, concentrating on the task at hand. Kate was third in the car, so it was important for her to say and help her team. Imagine how grueling this can be for all involved.

Avoidable Contact covers much of the sport in plain, easy to understand, language, even the uninitiated can understand. Tammy talks about the teams, cars, sponsors, parts, tires ( different tires for different situations), safety devices (safety barriers and the Hans device) and people (each has their specific function).

We ride around the track with Kate her as she races, brakes, dodges and weaves, even talking about the dip in the track that causes a wiggle.

THEN, the big wreck. Are we ghouls, sitting and waiting for it? Wanting it? Wishing for it?

Someone died. Is a penalty for ‘avoidable contact’ penalty enough? The penalty is called a ‘stop plus 75’ – the driver must stop in the penalty box plus they are held for 75 seconds, which equals a lap at the Daytona Race Track.

How about the women in a sport that has been traditionally know as a man’s sport? Are they treated differently? Of course, just look at the flak Danica Patrick gets for being too sexy. Who care? It’s all about the driving.

I love Nascar racing and have been in tracks from Michigan, Alabama, New York, New Hampshire and Maryland. I have even worked some events for the IHRA and my husband has worked for Dirt Motorsports. I love the noise, the smell, the sounds and the feeling of the roaring engines vibrating through my body. The action is nonstop.

Avoidable Contact by Tammy Kaehler is a cozy mystery for a sport that I have not read fiction novels for before. I was not on pins and needles as I read through the pages, waiting for the murderer to be discovered, but I did enjoy all the racing details and the mystery was a bonus. Tammy’s writing kept the story flowing smoothly and I think I was more interested in who would win the race, than who wanted Stuart dead. I would definitely consider reading more of Tammy’s work.

My Review of Remains of Innocence by J A Jance

My Review for Remains of Innocence by J A Jance

I have read numerous J A Jance novels, so when I saw the opportunity to read and review Remains of Innocence, I jumped all over it. J A Jance writes an amazing mystery of murder, torture, abuse and the evil of human psychopaths. The writing keeps me on the edge of my seat as I try to figure out who is the murderer.

I can picture Lisa driving up to the dilapidated house that she had left so many years ago. Her memories are not good – an abusive mother who drove her and her brother away. Her mother had mental problems, not least of which was hoarding. Lisa grew up in poverty and filth. She had been teased at school and called stinky. A teacher stepped in and because of that, her life became bearable – she was able to shower, wash her clothes and had money to buy food That is why, now, her small apartment is spotless.

When Lisa’s mother ended up hospitalized, they called her. All her mother wanted was her “Joy To Cooking” book and was adamant about it. That’s how Lisa came to be standing at the door of her old house. A spider crawled on her hand as she retrieved the book and she dropped it. We both hate spiders. Who doesn’t? Money fell out. She started checking all the books and kept finding more. Where had it come from? Had she been using outhouses, no bathing or clothes washing and no food to eat while the money had been sitting there the whole time? Thirty thousand dollars.

In Arizona, Sherriff Joanna Brady was called from bed at 5AM to look for a developmentally disabled man. He had climbed out a bedroom window and was nowhere to be found.

Joanna had inherited the job of sheriff of Cochise County after her father died. She had proven herself and won the townspeople’s respect. She is married with two kids and pets that all seem to be damaged in some way. I love that her husband, Butch, who is a writer, handles most of the household duties. A man secure in his masculinity. Does he write crime novels? My hubby does the cooking too, so I can relate. When hubby’s not home, like Joanna, a PB&J sounds like a meal to me.

In her job as a waitress, Lisa knew people by what they ordered for dinner. They all chipped in to help her clean out and fix up her mother’s house with the money she found. Why would someone burn it down? Now she was on the run. She didn’t know from who, what or why.

I love J A Jance’s approach. Remains of Innocence is two separate storylines, until……

The reading is smooth and easy. Just enough suspense, mystery and tension to keep me reading page after page. The characters and plot are detailed and fully developed. No complaints. Even being an ARC, I found few things I would change and they were very minor and grammatical.

I am always happy and eager to pick up a J A Jance novel, especially if Joanna is in it. I love her. She takes no crap from anyone.

I feel J A Jance tried to trick me with the identity of the murderer. Whoa, a great twist. Where did that come from? No wonder I was vacillating back and forth. Most excellent and I can hardly wait to read the next one.

SYNOPSIS

Sheriff Joanna Brady must solve two perplexing cases that may be tied together in New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance’s thrilling tale of suspense that brings to life Arizona’s Cochise County and the desert Southwest in all its beauty and mystery.

An old woman, a hoarder, is dying of emphysema in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In cleaning out her house, her daughter, Liza Machett, discovers a fortune in hundred dollar bills hidden in the tall stacks of books and magazines that crowd every corner.

Tracing the money’s origins will take Liza on a journey that will end in Cochise County, where Sheriff Joanna Brady is embroiled in a personal mystery of her own. A man she considers a family friend is found dead at the bottom of a hole in a limestone cavern near Bisbee. And now there is the mystery of Liza and the money. Are the two disparate cases connected? It’s up to Joanna to find out.

~~~~~~
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A voracious reader, J. A. Jance knew she wanted to be a writer from the moment she read her first Wizard of Oz book in second grade. Always drawn to mysteries, from Nancy Drew right through John D. McDonald’s Travis Magee series, it was only natural that when she tried her hand at writing her first book, it would be a mystery as well.
J. A. Jance went on to become the New York Times bestselling author of the J. P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, three interrelated thrillers featuring the Walker family, and Edge of Evil. Born in South Dakota and brought up in Bisbee, Arizona, Jance lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.
SYNOPSIS
Sixteen year old orphan, Ava Lopez, has returned to New Orleans, Louisiana, just as a dark entity has taken residence in the bayou.
Not only does Ava have to discover who or what is taking its victims from the Quarter, and leaving their remains in the Bayou. She will also have to maneuver her way around a new school and deal with a new bodyguard.
Ava will have to uncover the mystery before she becomes its next victim.
Excerpt: Prologue
It had been at least three years since he had left New Orleans, Louisiana and Auguste Cheval still wasn’t sure if he had made the right decision in returning. It didn’t feel right, yet he no longer had the option to stay away. His father had skipped out on him again leaving him no choice but to live with his uncle Prosper Cheval.
Uncle Prosper was absolutely crazy. He refused to live in town preferring instead to live out in the Bayou. Auguste had to make the long trek from town to his uncle’s shack each and every day, to and from his high school. Auguste attended Ben Franklin, in part thanks to his social worker, who for some reason or another seemed focused on making sure he stayed the course. His social worker Phillips believed that Auguste had the grades and the drive to excel at school; a school where nearly everyone excelled at one thing or another.
The only issue Auguste had was that a normal life could never be in the cards for him, but he wasn’t about to tell his social worker Phillips just why that was. How could he even begin to explain it?
As Auguste headed deeper into the Bayou he ventured down a narrow pathway that was nearly completely covered over with knee high marshway cordgrass. Auguste had taken the long way home as he was in no hurry to return. His uncle Prosper probably wouldn’t be there, more than likely he was out checking on his traps.
A slight sound came from his left. Something heavy was pushing through the marshway cordgrass, but Auguste couldn’t see what it was. So he waited. He didn’t want to move any further until he could see it clearly. In the light of the fading sun, Auguste held his breath as he waited to identify what moved in the cordgrass. In spite of the fact that the sun had reached the horizon, the air remained hot and humid enough to cause his clothes to stick to his body.
A man in his early forties rolled out of the cordgrass falling right in Auguste’s pathway. The man rolled until he was on his hands and knees, he lifted his head high up in the air, his chin tilted skyward and his eyes closed. He smelled the dry stillness in the air. His eyes opened and he quickly shifted toward Auguste. His eyes locked in on Auguste and his head made a rather sharp movement almost like a wolf finding the scent of his prey.
As the man’s eyes focused sharply on Auguste, a deep low growl escaped his throat. The eerie sound was so disturbing that it caused Auguste to feel ill. As the man leaned onto his back legs ready to pounce on Auguste, a wolf jumped out of the marshway cordgrass and latched onto the man’s throat, dragging him onto the ground and ripping at his flesh.
He tried to fight back, sinking his teeth into the wolf’s coat, but to no avail as the wolf tore fiercely away at him. The man screamed out in pain against the assault. Sudden silence signaled that the man had given up the fight. His body grew limp as his life began to ebb, leaving him unable to endure anymore.
The wolf turned and shifted toward Auguste, it took a step towards him with a giant paw. The wolf had an unearthly presence as its paws were large and sunk into the earth with each heavy step. Its head was slightly larger than the rest of the body giving it a disproportionate appearance. The wolf’s green eyes looked like they had seen centuries of war and chaos and were filled with a sadness that tore at Auguste’s heart. In spite of his feelings, Auguste found the hint of darkness lurking beneath the wolf’s demeanor disturbing. It was a darkness that wouldn’t think twice about attacking Auguste and harming him, just as it had killed the man without hesitation.
Auguste held out his arm as if to prevent it from coming any closer. As he did so, the fading sunlight illuminated the scar that ran from the outside of Auguste’s elbow to the inside of his middle forearm. The wolf sniffed at him before taking another step; then, as quickly as it had appeared, it turned and ran back into the cordgrass leaving behind the lifeless body of the man it had just killed for sport.
She Did It Her Way – Review for Blueberry Hill by Bette Lee Crosby
BBH_on_sale_1
Blueberry Hill was Donna’s favorite song.
I hope you enjoy Fats Domino singing Blueberry Hill as you discover Bette Lee Crosby’s new novel, Blueberry Hill, A Sister’s Story.
I have read all of Bette Lee Crosby’s fantastic novels. They are filled with southern charm and characters that sound so familiar, you feel as if you know them.
Blueberry Hill, a Sister's Story
1771e-addtogoodreadsblack
SYNOPSIS
CAN LOVE SAVE A SISTER FROM SELF-DESTRUCTION?
From the USA Today Bestselling Author of Spare Change comes the heartwarming story Blueberry Hill, a Sister’s Story.
Based on the realities of her own family, Crosby calls this a memoir of sorts. Traveling back to a time when the sisters were young enough to feel invincible and foolish enough to believe it would last forever, Crosby has bared her soul in a story of regrettable decisions and inevitable outcomes.
MY REVIEW
Cover – Valentine Design
The covers Bette Lee Crosby chooses for her novels always make me wonder what will be between the pages. I feel there will be some laughs and some tears as we travel down the road of life with her realistic characters.
I never even looked at the synopsis, just picked up Blueberry Hill and started reading. After all, it’s Bette Lee, so I know it will be good. Oh man……this hits very close to home.
Donna killed herself. She didn’t do it by popping pills or slitting her wrists, but by her lifestyle choices.
Donna was carefree. She lived for the moment. She was popular, cool, and believed anything is possible. She would then proceed to make it happen. She was very generous; spent the money she earned, while Bette would save. Donna has attitude with a capital A. I am loving her.
The female version of Fonzi from Happy Days.
Mama said Bette was the oldest, so it was her responsibility to keep her two sisters out of trouble. I can see where that could lead to guilt for not doing more to save Donna from herself. I, too, have dealt with the issue of enabling. When is the time to step in? Do we have the right to tell someone how to live, even if they have chosen a destructive lifestyle?
Bette felt they were a normal family, until Donna ran away. Even after she came back, they were never the same. Donna fell in love with a loser, who divorced her and left her after she had a baby. She married him again and had another child, but the marriage didn’t stick. We don’t choose who we fall in love with. She never quit loving him, even until her death. She was a great mother, full of love. The real loss was when the nest was EMPTY.
“Having a sister is like having a thumb, you simply believe it will always be there, because how could you possible get along without it.”
I have tears in my eyes as I read this. I recently lost one of my sisters and this almost sounds like her biography. She used to call me tag-a-long when we were kids, because I followed her everywhere. It is still hard to believe she is really gone. We do become involved in our daily lives and think tomorrow I’ll….call her…get with her….take the time to stop in……At least I can take consolation in the fact that she lived her life the way she wanted ( like Donna).
Bette Lee Crosby left out the horrid details that would rip our hearts out, but I felt the pain, as she relived the memories. With the loss of my sister, I can relate to the story on a very personal level. When do you step in, especially when you know it will do no good? We must remember, it is their life. They are a grown up. We can lie to ourselves and live in denial, but what will be, will be. My sister and Donna chose their exit from this world. Won’t we do the same?
Bette’s books can be thought provoking, heart wrenching and uplifting all at the same time. She can make me sob like a baby, when my heart is broken and laugh like a happy child, when a delightful surprise comes my way. Bette Lee’s books don’t always end with a happy ever after, but they do cover a lot of life’s trials and tribulations that we are familiar with.
I received Blueberry Hill from Bette Lee in return for an honest, unbiased review.
“Wouldn’t you love to go there?”
“Go where?”
“Blueberry Hill.”
“Blueberry Hill isn’t a real place. It’s just a title somebody made up for the song.”
“Believe what you want, but I know it’s real.”
To give a lot when you have a lot is easy, but to give a lot when you have so little is indeed a gift of love.
“You can love her or hate her, but you will never control her.” My sister to a T.
After years of writing for business, she turned to works of fiction and never looked back. “Storytelling is in my blood,” Crosby laughingly admits, “My mom was not a writer, but she was a captivating storyteller, so I find myself using bits and pieces of her voice in most everything I write.”
Crosby’s work was first recognized in 2006 when she received The National League of American Pen Women Award for a then unpublished manuscript. Since that, she has gone on to win several more awards, including another NLAPW award, Royal Palm Literary Awards, the FPA President’s Book Award Gold Medal and Reviewer’s Choice Award and Reader’s View Southeast Fiction Literary Award.
Friday 56 #20 – Murder on Whoopee Island – Clam Wake by Mary Daheim
The Friday 56 hosted by Freda’s Voice.
The only rules are to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader and find any sentence, or a few (no spoilers) that grabs you and post it.
CLAM WAKE by Mary Daheim
A bed – and – breakfast mystery
Mary Daheim is a prolific writer, but this is my first foray into one of her adventures.
I love cozy mysteries and am finding some chuckles, as Judith and Renie prepare to take a little vacation to Whoopee Island.
I will be reviewing Clam Wake on August 28, 2014, so be sure and check back.
1771e-addtogoodreadsblack(page 56 of the hardcover)
Judith responded. “We’re natives. Rain doesn’t bother us. We wanted to walk a bit before it got too stormy.”
Jacobson nodded. “Several people had done that in the early afternoon, including the victim. The locals know when a storm is brewing.” He paused. “Mr. Glover hadn’t been dead for more than half an hour.”
SYNOPSIS
Innkeeper and irrepressible sleuth Judith McMonigle Flynn and cousin Renie face off against a cold-blooded killer in a beach community in this delightfully charming Bed-and-Breakfast mystery from USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Mary Daheim.
With the holidays gone and Hillside Manor almost empty, Innkeeper Judith McMonigle Flynn has a bad case of the blues. A housesitting stint at her aunt and uncle’s retirement home on Whoopee Island with cousin Renie seems like the ideal pick-me-up. Surrounded by retirees in the off-season sounds peaceful and pleasant–or so the duo thinks. But it isn’t long before a dead body pops up in their vicinity. Not surprising in an area full of older folks—until they learn it wasn’t a bad ticker that did in the victim, but a very sharp knife. With clouds of suspicion hovering over her and Renie, Judith reluctantly begins sleuthing—if only to prove they didn’t commit the crime.
But what she finds is puzzling. The victim reputedly didn’t have an enemy in the world–except for the killer. Digging for clams and answers, the cousins discover that retirement can be deadly—at least among the eclectic, eccentric residents of Obsession Shores.
Giveaway, Review and Top Ten Fun Facts – Tortured Souls by Kimber Leigh Wheaton
The beautiful cover hints at the goodies inside the pages of Tortured Souls by Kimber Leigh Wheaton.
Before we get to my review,  the synopsis, and the giveaway, I have invited Kimber to share her:
Top Ten Fun/Silly Facts About Me
1) I love to sing. Doesn’t sound all that strange except I do it all the time. I had a stranger in Target tell me I have a beautiful singing voice… so flattering and embarrassing at the same time!
2) I love animals, and that includes bugs, reptiles, etc. A neighbor out for a walk caught me trying to save all the dying earthworms on my driveway after it rained. She told me I was crazy.
3) I spend a lot more time than the average person daydreaming. That’s where I get my plot and character ideas. Am I cheating on my husband when I daydream about the male characters?
4) I’m not sure if I could survive in a world without Diet Coke and chocolate.
5) I play video games every single day—even if it’s only for twenty minutes. It’s a serious addiction. They help me unwind.
6) During my teen years, I spent more than one afternoon in a video arcade fleecing innocent teenage boys dumb enough to think they could beat me in a game because I was a girl. I really enjoyed serving up their pride on a plate.
7) I have a rather unnatural addiction to cars. My car is like an extension of myself. Right now he’s a 45th Anniversary edition Camaro. When I was fresh out of college, I would forego new clothes and eating out to pay the auto insurance on my Dodge Daytona.
8) When I was fifteen, I snuck into the Whisky a Go Go in LA to meet Vince Neil of Motley Crue (I had connections at the stage entrance). Meet him I did, but within about five minutes, an older guy friend of mine showed up. He flung me over his shoulder and carried me out when I refused to leave peacefully. Worse—I had a major crush on him after that. Unrequited.
9) I can’t stand books without HEA endings. Lately I’ve been steering clear of dystopians since it’s rather hard for a HEA ending in a doomed world.
10) My characters become so real to me, I find myself talking about them like they’re real people.
I can relate to you about cars and am a bit jealous that you have the Camaro. I, too, love hot cars and I can understand your sacrifices. LOL  And the singing, I can see you walking down the aisle singing a happy tune. Do you have a favorite song?
That is a wonderful Top Ten and I enjoyed it very much. I feel we can never have too many chuckles in a day. Thanks so much for sharing Kimber.
MY REVIEW
A young adult novel about school kids, doing school kid stuff, except for the serial killer ghost. The tag line – Sometimes Rest in Peace isn’t an option – is what caught my eye, but when I read the blurb and saw it was about a ghost serial killer, I knew I had to read it. I love ghosts and serial killers, so the combination sounds like a unique read. I don’t think I’ve read a book like this before.
“You’re not welcome here”, Logan says to the presence behind me.
He meets my gaze again.
“You know it’s there.”
Shivers run up and down my neck, just as if the presence is standing behind me. I am only 1% into the book. Now that is scary and creepy good and a very good sign that the book will meet my expectations. Do you every get the feeling that someone or something is paying a little too much attention to you?
Five nights in a row Kacie Ramsey has had the same dream, or is it a vision? She is wallowing in the girl’s blood that has pooled on the ground. Kacie is clairvoyant.
She is not a girly girl. She is on the cross country team, as is Logan. It seems they have a psychic bond. She has felt like an outsider, especially since her mother left. Kacie always thought it was because her mother couldn’t deal with her paranormal powers. She felt it was all her fault, but there is more to the story.
Kacie is a very strong psychic, but has denied it for so long that her powers have been stifled. She has no control over them and that makes her dangerous. Her best friend, Celia, is afraid of ghosts and has no idea she has supernatural powers. She keeps her in the dark.
Kodiak, her dog, looks like a polar bear. It is a goldendoodle – half poodle and half golden retriever. Designer dogs have become very popular. Here are a few mixes that I thought funny – Bassetoodle, Bossi-Poo, Cadoodle, Foodle, Schnoodle, Sheepadoodle and my personal favorite, Doodleman Pinscher. It makes me think of a Rizzoli and Isles episode that I saw recently. The punch line – what do you call a poodle? A poodle.
Logan invited her to a meeting of the Orion Circle. The Orion Circle is a mysterious group that you can only attend if you are invited. There are very few who know that it is a paranormal research group. She never belonged anywhere. Would she now that she is a part of the Orion Circle?
She sees ghosts and talks to them. Imagine waking up and a ghost is groping and pawing you. How freaky is that? She helped a young ghost move on and it brought to mind The Ghost Whisperer.
The Orion Circle made me think of a tiny Harry Potter school inside of a regular school. She has been chosen to train with them to enable her to use her powers and prepare for the upcoming battle.
The writing skims over and doesn’t flesh out all the details that I love to see for a 5 star novel. I love to be able to walk with the characters and visualize their actions. I wavered between a 3 and a 4, but the last quarter of the book confirmed a 4 for me. I was unable to put the book down, as I wondered what would become of them as they took on the Foxblood Demon .
I was given this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
SYNOPSIS
Sometimes Rest in Peace isn’t an option.
Kacie Ramsey sees ghosts—and it’s ruining her life. Her mother left, her father blames her, and no matter how hard she tries, she can’t keep the ghosts away. Now a new power has emerged. Nightly visions of grisly murders and a relentless predator draw her to the brink of insanity.
When the phantom appears at a party, Kacie’s longtime crush, Logan, saves her. He invites her to join the Orion Circle, a group of supernatural hunters with chapters in schools all over the country. Through the Circle, Kacie learns to embrace her spiritual powers, and for the first time in her life she feels in control rather than a victim.
But the Foxblood Demon will not give up so easily. A demented serial killer in life who trapped the souls of the thirteen children he murdered, imprisoning them within the walls of his mansion. Now in death, he plots his return while drawing power from the pure souls of the children. He recognizes something in Kacie he’s never seen before—a medium powerful enough to provide a vessel for his tainted soul.
Kacie can’t ignore the tortured souls of the children crying out to her every night. With Logan at her side, she will fight the Foxblood Demon. But can they banish this powerful phantom, or will Kacie lose not only her body, but her eternal soul to the monster.
