False Start Fairy Tale
Kelly St-Laurent
Publication date: June 9th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Adèle Villeneuve is attempting the impossible. At twenty-four she’s opened an events company in her small French village, which at last count has a population of 1501. Even her parents tried to stop her. But Adèle has a plan. Or, at least she did.

Then the Reniers returned to town.

Aside from the dilapidated chateau that’s sat in ruin for the past forty years, Saint-Germain is known for one other thing: a bitter feud between the Reniers and the Villeneuves that has gone on for so long no one remembers how it started. It’s practically folklore, a hatred so deep it ended with the Reniers leaving France back in the eighties, never to be seen or heard from again.

Until now.

With the feud reignited, Adèle’s quiet life is upended. Even more so when she finds out that the Reniers are not only refurbishing the chateau but also opening a competing events company. When Finn Renier, the alluring son of her father’s enemy, offers her a truce that could save her business, she makes a decision that goes against her family, a choice that changes everything.

As she finds herself falling for the one person she’s not supposed to, secrets and lies become entangled, a dangerous truth threatening to be revealed.

Because Finn isn’t all that he seems.

And the Reniers didn’t just return to Saint-Germain for a fresh start.

EXCERPT:

“How about a drink?”

I stare at him, certain that he’s joking. “A drink?”

“Yeah.”

He says it with such confidence. I can’t imagine what it’s like to walk around with that level of self-assurance. “I can’t have a drink with you.”

“Why not? You did last Friday.”

“You showed up at my table. Uninvited, I might add. And that was in Laval. My papa’s office is right over there and he would disown me if he saw me speaking with you, let alone having a drink with you.”

He watches me closely. “Do you always do what your dad wants?”

“No.” The moment I say it I have my doubts.

“So, have a drink with me.”

“Sure,” I say sarcastically. “We’ll go into the café where Gloria’s only known me all my life. I’m sure she won’t tell Papa.”

A subtle hint of annoyance crosses those cover model features of his. “Are you serious about not being seen in public with me?”

“Are you serious in not realizing why?” I glance around, worried that we’ve been talking too long. Saint-Germain’s gossips have eyes everywhere.

“Adèle, it’s just a drink. I’m not asking you to marry me.”

My mind conjures up an image of him in a suit, standing at an altar, watching me, teary-eyed as I walk down the aisle. Appalled at my disturbing, traitorous thoughts, I get to the point. “Our families are at war.”

“Should I be sharpening my sword?” he asks. “Or will it be pistols at dawn?”

Both those words are far too phallic for my liking. “Surely you have something better to do, like repair your dilapidated château so you can put me out of business.”

“The workers start next week.”

“Well…” I have no comeback to that.

“If you won’t drink with me, will you at least take a walk with me?”

“Why?” I ask, confused.

“Because I’m new to town. Aren’t you supposed to be friendly to newcomers?”

“There are plenty of other people you could ask,” I tell him.

He chuckles at that. “As far as I can see, there are two other people my age in Saint-Germain. You and your cousin.”

“Then ask her,” I say.

“I’m asking you.”

My heart does an unmistakeable flutter, proving itself to be as traitorous as my thoughts. I realize I need to be blunt. “The only way you could ever get me to drink with you is if it was to toast your family’s departure from Saint-Germain.”

He moves even closer. “We’re not going anywhere.”

“Then I suppose you’ll have to get used to drinking alone.”

The air between us thickens, his eyes glancing at my lips. For a fleeting second I think he might kiss me. For a horrifying moment, I think I want him to. But then it passes, like temporary psychosis. Still, a worrying realization persists.

I cannot trust myself around Finn Renier.

Sea Child
LaVerne Thompson
(Children of the Waves #4)
Publication date: April 23rd 2020
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Land or sea, he was her world.

Shawnah had a decision to make. Sea born but land raised, she now knew the truth of her birth and how far some would go to steal her powers. There was only one man she trusted to protect her while she learned how to protect herself. But what happens if she decides to flaunt destiny and not remain in the sea? Would she risk losing him? The children of Poseidon are fated to have one mate.

Cyrus didn’t think that applied to him, since he was a hybrid born of both land and sea. He never searched for a bride. But fate had other ideas, and once he held Shawnah in his arms, Cyrus had no intention of letting her go. When she is once again threatened, Cyrus is willing to take on the gods of the sea, or even her father of the land, to protect her and remain at her side.

EXCERPT:

…soon as his lips had touched Shawnah’s he knew…

She stirred in his arms and opened her stunning hazel eyes to stare into his golden ones. She smiled.

‘You’re safe now.’ Cyrus spoke into her mind.

‘I know you. How do I know you?’

He frowned. ‘I’m not sure, but at some point in our lives, our paths may have crossed. Come we must hurry.’

‘Where? I don’t remember much. Can you tell me what’s going on?’

‘Yes, but we need to get out of here. Trust me.’

His heart paused as he held out his hand and waited. It began beating again when she placed her hand in his.

EXCERPT:

“What are you doing here?” I sputter.

He lifts a crystal tumbler, one finger of some no-doubt expense liquor at the bottom. “Having a drink. You said the kitchen was off limits, but I was thirsty. Hope this is okay.”

His twinkling dark eyes tell me he knows it’s not okay.

Challenge lights the air between us, electric and hot. Part of me wants to pick up the phone on the side table and call mother. The second she knows he’s stomped all over her oriental rugs with his muddy work boots, he’s fired.

That would be a cheap win, though. Too easy. Too banal. Besides, I like the thought of him stomping all over her oriental rugs with his muddy work boots.

“Of course,” I say, sarcasm sharpening my words. “We always offer gardeners top shelf vodka.”

He merely lifts a dark eyebrow. How is it possible for eyebrows to look low class? His do. They’re a mess, broad and unruly. I want to run my tongue over them, smooth them out.

“Do you always show up half-dressed for them, too?” he asks in a musing tone. “Because that’s a real perk. They should put that in their classified ad.”

My cheeks burn hot as I realize how little I’m wearing. The bath towel covers from the slope of my breasts to the tops of my thighs. It’s held together by so little—only the tuck of terry cloth. If it came undone right now I’d be naked in front of him.

“Tell me your name,” I demand, lifting my chin.

“So you can tell your mother about me?”

“Maybe I will.”

“And if I tell her that you came downstairs in only a towel? That you tried to have sex with me? That you were the one who drank half the bottle of scotch?”

My mouth drops open. “That’s a lie.”

“Does that surprise you? That other people lie, too?” He must see the shock on my face; his smile is smile and smug. “Yes, I know about you. Poor little Emily Coulter, can’t tell the truth to save her life.”

A knot around my throat, pulled taut by thick dirt-stained fingers. “How would you know that?” That’s my family’s dirty little secret, but not the worst one. Not by far.

“I know lots of things.”

“And anyway, why are you back already? It’s only been three days. The hedges don’t need to be trimmed every damn day.”

His smile comes slow. “You don’t trust me?”

“Not as far as I could throw you.”

There’s something strange about him, something a little dangerous.

Unfortunately that only makes me like him more.

Publication date: April 7th 2020
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense, Thriller

Dallas August runs a dangerous business—an organization of elite spies for hire.

The secrets trade.

Nothing is off limits, and no price is too high.

When asked to uncover what recluse Gwen Marsh knows about a Mafia kingpin’s death, Dallas poses as a bodyguard to get close to his target, but the stubborn Asian beauty wants nothing to do with him. Dallas August is about to find out how dangerous life can be as one of the Secret Brokers.

Once you are in, there is no turning back.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

“You’re aggravating, smart-mouthed, deceptive, probably lying about any number of things at this very moment, but there’s something I can’t quite put my finger on that makes me want to kiss you and never stop.”

Gwen sat up and peered into the fire. “It would never go anywhere. You have your world, and I

have—”

“Your horses.” Dallas slid closer, touching his shoulder to hers.

“Do you ever think about how we might have ended up if we hadn’t met like we did? Without the lies, suspicions, and animosity. Like two ordinary people who want to get to know each other?”

He nodded, intent on letting the truth pour from his lips. “I’ve thought about that a great deal, especially when I remember how you rubbed that cream on me.”

Her airy, happy giggle gave him a glimpse of the woman she kept hidden behind her tough exterior. He knew the vodka had let her guard down, but he liked her this way. It was the most honest he’d ever seen her.

“I keep thinking of you in my kitchen.” She closed her eyes and rocked her head back. “I would sneak out of my office and watch you when you weren’t looking.”

The heat warming his insides stalled, and he drew his brows together. “Your kitchen? What did we do in your kitchen?”

She turned to him, and the rosy hue on her cheeks became a blazing shade of scarlet. “I hate to admit it, but watching you cook was a real turn on. It is for most women.”

Dallas’s chuckle circled the living room and a weight lifted.

“Now you tell me.” He crumpled into the sofa. “I kept trying to get closer to you, to get you to see me as more than a bodyguard, to not hate me, and the answer was there all along. How did I miss that?”

Gwen nestled against his shoulder. “Yeah, well, it took me half a bottle of vodka to figure out how I feel about you.”

He put his arm around her, pulling her to his chest. “And what have you decided?”

She ran her finger over his lips. “That whatever reason brought you to me, you’re not the man I thought you were. You’re so much more.”

He touched his forehead to hers, relieved. It wasn’t forgiveness she offered him, but a respite from his inner turmoil. He could take the key and walk away right now without any regrets. Hell, he would have one, and that was what kept him on that sofa—the hope of a few minutes of peace in her arms.

“What are we going to do about this?”

She dragged her finger from his lips to his chin and down his neck. “I’ve got my yam cream upstairs in my room.”

He studied the contours of her face, hesitating.

Gwen pulled out of his embrace and took his hand, locking her fingers with his. “I suggest you come with me.”

All That’s Hidden is a delightful story with intrigue, humor, and of course, romance. A perfect read for the beach or traveling on a plane. I fell in love with Sugar and Rupert!
-Lorence, singer/songwriter

Pet sitter turned entrepreneur, Jennifer Albright thinks she has it all: an expanding business, a new, blissful marriage to a very sexy husband, a dog named Rupert that people frequently think is a bear, and a parrot named Sugar that Jennifer’s pretty sure is psychic. But her idyllic life begins to unravel when a series of creepy incidents threatens to sabotage the launch of her doggie day care center, and the discovery of a hidden treasure thrusts her into the world of federal agents and international thievery. The chaos soon spills over onto her home life and Jennifer reluctantly begins to suspect that her seemingly perfect, unbelievably supportive husband is hiding something from her. There’s just so much that doesn’t add up.

Tech-mogul Ryan has found the love of his life in his adorable new bride, Jennifer. But trouble seems to follow her like a basset hound. She doesn’t suspect a thing.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT

Ryan got home about a half hour later. He dropped his jacket on the couch and headed over to where I was sitting at the kitchen counter.

“Do I smell kabobs? Great, let me wash up and get out of this suit.”

I poured Ryan a beer and began to plate the take out. It suddenly struck me that this was not appropriate mom behavior. Moms bake chocolate cupcakes and roasted chicken for Sunday dinner. They cook pancakes and tuna casserole. I burn pancakes and have no idea what goes into a tuna casserole. Well, I suppose I could buy cupcakes and the pre-roasted chicken at the Safeway is pretty yummy. Anyway, new babies don’t need cupcakes and I still have at least ten months before there would even be a baby. I could learn to cook.

Are you serious? You just started a business. Where did this baby stuff come from? What if Ryan doesn’t want any babies? But I want babies. Since when? Since today, I think. I was suddenly very sad to think Ryan might not want any babies. Plural? Oh, good grief!

Ryan enjoyed his kabobs and Lebanese bread. I’d bought salad and rice too. See, I could plan a balanced meal, even if I couldn’t cook one. He washed it all down with his beer. The whole time he was eating, he was rattling on about his day and how he liked Darren.

I usually found his comments interesting and insightful, but today I wasn’t listening. I love kabobs, but I nibbled on them and moved the rice around my plate. My mind was elsewhere.

“…and that was when the flying saucer landed on the helipad and we all went out, got in, and took a ride to Mars,” I heard when I tuned back in.

“Uh-huh. Wait. What?”

“What’s the matter, honey? You worried about the business thing? You’re going to do great. Don’t worry.”

“Thanks. That’s not it. Umm…we’ve never talked about this. I was sort of wondering…how you feel about…kids.”

“Kids in general or specific kids? You mean other people’s kids, right?” I sure had his attention, but I got the impression he was not a fan of the conversation topic.

“Well, not exactly.” There were about ten seconds of dead silence. I was still staring at my plate, moving the rice around aimlessly, afraid I’d burst into tears if I looked at him.

Ryan reached out and grabbed the sides of the bar stool I was sitting on and spun me around to face him. He took my chin in his hand and tilted my head up.

“Are you pregnant, Sugar Shack?” The inquiry was quiet and silky and expectant. He certainly didn’t sound angry. So, I took a chance and looked directly into those ocean blue eyes. I’d never seen them sparkle like that. He was definitely not mad.

“No.” It wasn’t much more than a whisper.

“You want to be?” I wasn’t expecting that.

“Umm. Maybe.”

“What are we thinking here, six, eight?” He was grinning. My heart lifted.

“We should probably start with one and see how that goes.” I was grinning too.

“No point in putting stuff like this off. We should get started right now.”

Ryan tugged my arm, pulling me off the seat of the stool, and slung me over his shoulder. I giggled as he patted me on the bottom and headed up the stairs. He banged the door shut with his foot and unceremoniously dumped me on the bed.

“Lots of kids,” he soundly declared.

MY REVIEW

Is that a lycanthrope that stole that hamburger patty right out of Orville’s hands? LOL

I think I know the answer to that question. The critters in Lauren Carr’s books have distinctive personalities that have me laughing, and at times worrying about them.

Newman is a basset hound TV addict. Don’t mess with his remote. Gnarly, a German Shepherd, is a force of nature. Spencer is the sweet loving female of the group.

Archie has her own thoughts on the death of the vice president’s wife and I do love a good conspiracy. Was the president their target and Paloma just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Lauren Carr has thrown in so many twists and turns and multiple mysteries that make me wonder what they could possibly have in common.13 victims. Is there more than one murderer?

I read The Nutcracker Conspiracy in one sitting. I couldn’t believe how fast I flew through it, having to know who would be the next victim and why.

Lauren Carr has upped the game in this mystery, thriller, police procedural. There are a lot of characters, so to choose my favorites is hard for me to do. Of course, the dogs are always a hit and I look forward to what they are up to next. The love and romance is sweet and sexy without the details. Who wouldn’t love to have a husband like Murphy?

Every time Lauren Carr has a new novel, I jump at the chance to read it. She keeps me entertained, unable to put the book down until the last page is read. She keeps the mystery alive and the story filled with lots of action that is so well written it is easy to fly through the pages…having to know who did what to who and having some laughs along the way. I do love some humor with my murder. 🙂 I will be waiting…patiently (?)…for the next book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of The Nutcracker Conspiracy by Lauren Carr.

Book TitleThe Nutcracker Conspiracy (A Thorny Rose Mystery #4) by Lauren Carr
Category:  Adult Fiction (18 +),  388 pages
Genre:  Mystery
Publisher:  Acorn Book Services
Release date:   January 30, 2020
Content Rating:  PG-13 (Lauren Carr’s books are murder mysteries, so there are murders involved. Occasionally, a murder will happen on stage. There is sexual content, but always behind closed doors. Some mild swearing (a hell or a damn few and far between). No F-bombs!

Book Description:

Three years ago, the nation gasped in horror when the President of the United States barely escaped an assassination attempt that left two dead—the vice president’s wife and the attempted assassin.  Even after numerous investigations proved otherwise, conspiracy theorists argue that the assassin was acting on orders from the CIA, FBI, and every federal agency within a hundred miles of the capital.

Aspiring Author Dean Conway is the last person Lieutenant Commander Murphy Thornton wants to spend his Saturday afternoon when they end up at the same wedding reception table. While their wives tend to bridesmaid duties, Murphy is trapped listening to Dean’s latest work-in-project—completing the manuscript of an investigative journalist who’d disappeared months earlier.

“She was number twelve,” Dean says.

“Twelve?” Murphy asks.

“Twelve witnesses connected to or investigating The Nutcracker shooting have died either in an accident or suicide.”

Two days later, Dean dies suddenly―but not before sending a text message to Murphy:

 “13”

Check Out These Other Thorny Rose Mysteries:

“The plot was original, fresh and fast paced in spite of the “traditional elements” employed which can normally be found in any other thriller of this genre. The USP of this story would be its unpredictability. When you think you have it all guessed up, the plot would change its course keeping you hooked. There were a lot of suspense twists and turns that kept the momentum up. Needless to say, the writing was simply perfect. One thing that writer needs to be lauded for is the humor she inculcated in the book. Minus those humorous parts, the book would have been one serious read.” – Reviewer: Book and Ink

Book Description:
Five women with seemingly nothing in common are found brutally murdered in a townhome outside Washington, DC. Among the many questions surrounding the massacre is what had brought these apparent strangers together only to be killed.

Taking on his first official murder case, Lieutenant Murphy Thornton, USN, believes that if he can uncover the thread connecting the victims, then he can find their murderer.

The case takes an unexpected turn when Murphy discovers that one of the victims has a connection to his stepmother, Homicide Detective Cameron Gates. One wintry night, over a dozen years before, her first husband, a Pennsylvania State trooper, had been run down while working a night shift on the turnpike.

In this first installment of the Thorny Rose Mysteries, the Lovers in Crime join newlyweds Murphy Thornton and Jessica Faraday to shift through a web of lies and cover-ups. Together, can the detectives of the Thorny Rose uncover the truth without falling victim to a cunning killer?

“Mysteries, murder, danger, and memories that threatens their lives keeps the action and suspense at a high level and even when the answers are found, it left me wanting more.” – Review by Sherry Fundin of Fundinmental

After ten months of marital bliss, Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are still discovering and adjusting to their life together. When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family while visiting family at the winery near-by, and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Giveaway – The Beijing Memorandum by J B Morris @JBMorrisAuthor @iReadBookTours

.

I would love to welcome J B Morris to fundinmental. Would you like to say a few words J B?

Do you have another profession besides writing?
I am retired but I must admit I have had some interesting experiences in my career. I worked in a funeral home and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer. I managed a cemetery and became a TV Weatherman for ten years. I was elected to a city council and served three terms in the state legislature. Uncle Sam grabbed me, and I spent ten years in the Army Reserve.

How long have you been writing?
I started writing when I was a teenager and became a serious writer five or six years ago.

Do you ever get writers block? What helps you overcome it?
I’m fortunate. Writers block has not been a serious issue. I simply start writing which usually garbage and the words begin to flow within one to two hours. If the hour is late in the day, I say the *ell with it and quit.

What do you like the least about writing?
What I dislike the most about writing is an affliction suffered by many writers. EDITING. I have a convoluted process that drives me to distraction.

What gives you a “high” in writing?
When the words are perfect and they flow like wine. You look at the complete effort and ask yourself, “Where did that come from?”

What is your favorite travel spot?
Kalispell, Montana. That slice of nature is crowned with Flathead Lake and the gateway to Glacier National Park. The journey ends at Moose Jaw, Canada.

I have never been to Montana, but it sounds like a fabulous place. Thanks so much for sharing you thoughts with us today and congratulations on your latest novel

Giveaway & Review – The Last Thing She Said by Lauren Carr @TheMysteryLadie @iReadBookTours

“Too many twists and turns to easily share about this book. Nevertheless, Carr has pulled off another “hit” that kept me reading in one setting until the clues were so well together that the villain fell into our laps…or Chris’s, LOL Carr has put a lot into the book beyond the mysteries this time…Characters enjoyed chocotinis, visited book stores…and even blundered into getting engaged (the ring had been purchased 4 months ago)… But, for me, a special thank you for the political spoof at a time when politics at the national level is devastating, gave me a laugh and lightened the load of it all!” Review by Glenda Bixler, Book Reader’s Heaven

MY REVIEW

The Geezer Squad is back, along with the rest of the gang, and I am so happy to joining in the mystery, fun and lovin’ The family that solves a murder together, stays together. lol I am amped up, ready for some murder, mystery and laughs, with two and four legged characters combines.

Sometimes it is hard to write a review and this is one of those times. The words won’t seem to come, even though I loved The Last Thing She Said. There was lot of mystery and suspects, clues to follow, some lead to nowhere and others lead to more mystery.

I saw Shannon’s mystery coming and I’m eager for the investigation to begin. The Geezer Squad is called into action. They morphed from a book club to a cold case investigating team and they are very, very good at it. A bunch of retired law enforcement that hates to let the bad guy get away.

Sterling…well…what can I say about Sterling:

“Oh, what a beautiful German Shepherd!”…”And he’s wearing sunglasses!”

Lauren Carr’s descriptive writing brings all her characters and their worlds to life in vivid detail sometimes making me bust out in laughter, other times I am completely absorbed in the investigative details.

The whole Buttwrinkle thing had me LAUGHING OUT LOUD!

The past and present collide as the dead refuse to stay dead , and mysteries and suspects run riot through the pages. I love how Lauren Carr allows characters from her other series to make an appearance.

I went from curious to ticked off, to confused, to happy and laughing as I flipped through the pages, guessing and cyphering the clues.

MY REVIEW

All right. Back with the Geezer Squad and a freezing cold case.

We start out with Blair witnessing multiple deaths as she runs for her life. No one to trust, it’s up to her to find her way to the director of the CIA, with the disc. She has secrets and comes face to face with one of them…Chris.

Chris has retired to a farm, but when he sees Blair, he has a lot to investigate…so, with the help of the Geezer Squad he begins.

From the opening pages the action begins and it doesn’t stop until the end.

The characters are tough, resilient, trained professionals. Nigel, with his trust guardian Tristan, is also on the case and pulls a fast one of me. I love surprises and this was a doozy.

I love the visual imagery throughout. Here is an example and I think it will easily portray my feelings.

The hundred pound dog repeatedly leaps, all four feet off the floor, to peep through the door.

I cannot begin to describe my love for Sterling and was going to share some of my favorite thoughts about him, then, I thought, I don’t want to spoil the surprise for you. Lauren Carr’s fabulous critters offer many moments of smiles and laughs with their distinct personalities, right down to Thor, the bunny rabbit.

I just want to let you know, if you see a German Shepard with sunglasses and an FBI hat, don’t get in his way. He’s probably on a case.

A conspiracy within the government. A high level official crossed over the line, turning traitor. Car chases. Bullets Flying. Danger rises and they are in a race against time.

MY REVIEW

An original and unique novel of life after the destruction caused by human. Humans, dolphins, and octopodes work together for survival. Told from all characters POV, whether human, dolphin or…

I love any books that relate to water and ecology and the creatures that live there.

Man’s inhumanity to man and everything else on the planet is nothing new. Nothing they won’t do to get what they want and the critters do hold grudges…so beware.

I was entranced, enthralled, disgusted and horrified, tense and frightened, hopeful and dismayed.

Man poisoned the earth and ecologies and species have been decimated and destroyed.

I didn’t see the twist in Chapter 14, but it makes perfect sense. And I love it. I read Come Eventide by Chris Riker in one sitting…because I had to know.

I read slower than normal, not wanting to miss a thing. I had to concentrate to follow and be surprised.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Come Eventide by Chris Riker.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

A century has passed since the fall of humanity changed the natural landscape. The oceans are poison, and a fraction of Earth’s magnificent creatures remain. The only surviving humans squabble over limited resources as they cling to a fragile peace. Yet in this bleak landscape hope lives on in Earth’s other intelligent life. It all begins when Septielle, a seven-armed octopod, has a vision of a world restored—a world she will not live to see. Inspired by her vision, a dolphin named Muriel shoulders her mission and enlists any humans who will listen—including Anadare, a young islander with an ax to grind against the oppressive ruling class of tourists turned bureaucrats. An invasion of cannibalistic pirates complicates things as they declare war on a world that rejects them.

As tensions rise to a crescendo, islanders, tourists, and pirates alike must put aside their differences to send Muriel on her greatest journey yet—beyond the sea, beyond form, beyond time itself.

In his first novel, Chris Riker conducts an opus in voce giocoso that grins at the inevitable, but reminds us of the heart that all life shares.
