Meet the Author:

Bruce Shutts has spent countless hours reading children’s picture books to his three children and five grandchildren over the past forty years. He also loves to create humorous poems for nearly every occasion he can imagine. Coupled with the fact that he often thinks and acts like a three-to-six-year-old, it makes his entrance into the world of children’s books a natural fit. He currently is retired with his wife of forty-five years and loves to travel, play golf, and (you guessed it) read books at night to his grandkids!

Book Title:  The Mirabal Sisters: From Caterpillars to Butterflies by Raynelda A. Calderon
Category:  Children’s Non-Fiction (Ages 8-12)
Genre:  Children’s Book
Publisher:  Cayena Press, Inc., 48 pages
Release date:   March 2022
Content Rating:  G.  Suitable for all readers.

MY REVIEW

The Mirabel Sisters is a wonderfully illustrated look into a moment in time in the Dominican Republic during the rule of the dictator, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. Because of these sisters, November 25th was declared International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in their honor.

Kudos to these brave ladies, and those that supported them. I am happy to share their story and the courage they showed. The book and illustrations work together to tell their inspirational story.

The sisters were just people, people who loved to read, paint, worked in the family store, and, even though the youngest, Dede, was not killed, she was left to raise the children and tell their story. They are the true definition of heroes, which I feel is bandied around all too easily nowadays.

Recommended age group: Grades 4 – 6, Ages 8 – 12. The MIrabel Sisters would be a great addition to any library.

Giveaway – Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine by Beverly Reichman @iReadBookTours

<

I am super excited to be a part of the tour for Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine by Beverly Reichman. I love animals and hate whenever any are mistreated. Cindi’s Chocolate Valentine is an especially SPECIAL book because it features 17 pets that were chosen as winners in the Cindi Features a New Friend contest, from any assortment of 750 animals of all types, from dogs, hedgehogs, chickens….

Cindi's Chocolate Valentine

MY REVIEW

The wonderful cover for Cinidi’s Chocolate Valentine by Beverly Reichman is thick, as are the pages, and can definitely handle those sticky fingers that will want to reach out and touch the animals inside.

I found myself chuckling as the critters, Cindi and Pitty Pat, were decorated in costumes and paraded through the neighborhood. I love that creatures of all kinds and disabilities were shared in such a fun way.

And…we are left with a question…Have you ever changed your mind about things you might not like? Sure to inspire your child to answer and I would love to know what they come up with.

I love that some of the proceeds will be donated to animal rescue and shelter organizations.

MY REVIEW

I love dogs, so to read Bentley’s Best Birthday Ever! by Claire Eckard, a children’s interactive illustrated book, was fun and I smiled throughout. Bentley thinks everyone forgot his birthday, so he grabs his magic stick and walks through the park. He finds Bella, a new dog in town, that is lost.

For me, the great thing about reading children’s books is the simple wonder of life, the appreciation of everyday things that we, as adults, are sometimes too busy to see.

I can see a youngster reaching out to touch the wonderfully illustrated pages and pet all the different dogs. At the end are some questions to prod your youngster, words to find, things to count, playing your own birthday games with Bentley.

New Release – Unicorn Island by Donna Galanti @DonnaGalanti

.

The cover for Unicorn Island by Donna Galanti is AWESOME!

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Unicorn Island by Donna Galanti is a beautifully written coming of age fantasy for a young girl looking for her place in the world…and she finds it in the most unlikely place. It was easy to like Sam and when she looks out at the view from her attic bedroom window in Foggy Harbor, I felt like I would enjoy living there too. I love when an author gives me more than I anticipated and leaves me with a smile on my face.

At the end of the book, Donna Galanti shares some history on unicorns, wyverns, veterinarians, the pirates of the Carolina’s and Ocracoke and Assateague Islands, where the wild horses roam free.

I loved this wonderful story and am so glad there is more to come.

SYNOPSIS

Beyond the mist lies a magical secret waiting to be discovered. Unicorn Island is a middle-grade illustrated novel series about a young girl who discovers a mysterious island full of mythical beasts and darker dangers!  When Sam arrives in Foggy Harbor, population 3,230, all she can see is a small, boring town that’s way too far from home. And knowing that she’s stuck there all summer with her grumpy Uncle Mitch only makes things worse. But when Sam discovers a hidden trapdoor leading to a room full of strange artifacts, she realizes Foggy Harbor isn’t as sleepy as it seems. With the help of a new friend, Sam discovers an extraordinary secret beyond the fog: an island of unicorns whose fates are intertwined with hers.

EXCERPT

In New York City, lights twinkled across Sam’s ceiling all night long. She had never felt lonely there,

knowing the city was awake with her. She could already tell Foggy Harbor was different. It looked like

the loneliest place ever. Why would anyone live here on purpose? she wondered.

The driver pulled into the bus station. A neon sign that should have flashed Foggy Harbor Parking

was missing most of its letters. BOR . . . ING. Some sign, she thought. I’m already bored here.

“You got someone picking you up, Miss?” the driver asked as he pulled her suitcase from the luggage compartment.

Her t-shirt clung to her in the heavy, muggy air. Sam checked her phone for the address Mom had given her: 1 Foggy Way.

“My uncle lives a block from here,” she said, pointing at the street sign.

The driver nodded and pulled out of the station, leaving her under the broken sign. Sam texted Mom one word out of duty: ARRIVED. With no choice but to find her new home, she adjusted her backpack and popped up her suitcase handle, dragging it along. It clickety-clacked all the way down the quiet street.

Uncle Mitch’s stone house sat at the end, alone and secluded, hugging the ocean. Its sloped roof pierced the murky sky. One light glowed in a back window. Crickets trilled around the house, creating an eerie buzz as waves lapped the shore.

Sam crunched over the walking path made of shells, then thumped up the front porch steps and rang the doorbell, eager to escape the empty night.

After a few minutes, the door was yanked open. A tall man with curly black hair and a bushy mustache loomed over Sam, the porch light deepening his frown. “Yes?”

Sam swallowed hard. “Uncle Mitch?”

His eyes grew wide and he pulled her inside, slamming the door. “Samantha? What are you doing here?”

Cool air washed over her from a ceiling fan that whirred above, and she shivered, shrinking under his glare. Then she remembered what Mom had said: He’s the only family we’ve got.

Children’s Book – Poppy Needs A Puppy by Pamela Fagan Hutchins @pameloth

Poppy Needs a Puppy (Poppy & Petey Book 1)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I have been reading Pamela Fagan Hutchin’s Patrick Flint novels and I love her writing, so when I saw Poppy Needs A Puppy I thought it was the perfect time to share. We can all use some good feelings, smiles, and some hints for Christmas giving for the youngsters.

I highly recommend grabbing the paperback because it will be easier to read and share. The illustrations are wonderful, as is the story of a young girl wanting to make sure her sick Poppy gets lots of hugs. When they go to the shelter, she has to find the perfect one for her Poppy, and as soon as she saw him, she knew they were going to give him a forever home. Poppy Needs A Puppy by Pamela Fagan Hutchins has all the feels.

AMAZON SYNOPSIS

Caitlin loves her grandfather, Poppy. When he gets sick, she knows he needs extra hugs, more even than she can give him. She visits a shelter and picks out the perfect puppy to help her give hugs to her Poppy.

Written by USA Today bestselling author Pamela Fagan Hutchins, who makes her home in the frozen wilds of Snowheresville, Wyoming. Pamela loves her blind Boston terrier Petey and her dad (Poppy to his grandkids). One day she was feeling tired of writing suspense, mystery, and thriller books for grown-ups, and the Poppy & Petey series was born.

Illustrated by Laylie Frazier.
