Giveaway – Lies Ripped Open by Steve McHugh

NBTM_TourBanner_LiesRippedOpen

Welcome to my stop for Lied Ripped Open by Steve McHugh.

I love learning about characters and how authors came up with them, so let me introduce you to Steve McHugh. Welcome Steve.

Characters – sometimes my emphasis is on the story, but lately I have found the characters are speaking pretty loud. Where do you get your inspiration for the characters you write about?

Inspiration for characters can come from anywhere; a video game, another book, TV, real life. At some point I’ll see or hear something, and Ill know it’ll work as character, or a trait, or maybe just a single line or way of saying something. And from there that character will develop into something more.

Mostly my characters develop over time, over the course of thinking and writing the book. I find it easier to let them change and grow naturally, that way their behavior is more organic, more natural. Forcing something to happen because I as the writer want it to, doesn’t mean it’ll work for the characters in question, and balancing those things—what I want and what they want—isn’t always easy. Sometimes you have to forgo the easy thing to do the thing that works best, which in the long run works better for the book and characters.

That means sometimes I’ll be writing a book, and suddenly a new character will appear, someone I had no intention of using, but who fits within the narrative of the book, and they sort of force themselves into the story. It happens with every book, without question, and in my eyes it’s part of the fun of writing. I have to trust in myself not to make anyone do anything out of character, at least not without reason, and I can be hard work to ensure that one character doesn’t behave in a way that would go against their normal personality, but it usually doesn’t take me long to realize my error and go change things.

Character creation, and making those characters come to life off the page for the reader, is one of the harder, but more rewarding parts of being a writer. Yes, I have several dozen voices in my head (although usually only one or two at a time) all making sure I don’t write anything that goes against the order, but anything else would be dull.

Steve McHugh is the author of the popular Hellequin Chronicles. The fifth book, Lies Ripped Open, was out on 25th August 2015. He lives in Southampton on the south coast of England with his wife and three young daughters. When not writing or spending time with his kids, he enjoys watching movies, reading books and comics, and playing video games.

I really enjoyed learning more about you and what inspires you, Steve. Thanks so much for joining us today!

BLURB

Over a hundred years have passed since a group of violent killers went on the rampage, murdering innocent victims for fun. But even back then, sorcerer Nate Garrett, aka Hellequin, knew there was more to it than simple savage pleasure—souls were being stolen.

Nate’s discovery of the souls’ use, and of those supporting the group’s plan, made him question everything he believed.

Now the group Nate thought long dead is back. Violent, angry, and hell-bent on revenge, they have Hellequin firmly in their sights. And if he won’t come willingly, they’ll take those closest to him first.

The battle begins again.

EXCERPT

I walked over to the second agent, whose back was toward me as he stood a little further into the park, and placed my hand on his shoulder. “That’s enough,” I repeated, but he spun around and all of the breath left my body at once, followed immediately by pain as it exploded across my torso. I glanced down as a shimmering blade of ice was pulled free from my chest. It was covered in my blood. I dropped to my knees and watched as the magical weapon vanished from view. The pain forced me to abandon my night vision, and the darkness once again took control.

The overwhelming thought that bounced around my head was that neither of the SOA agents had been sorcerers. My attacker crouched beside me. “They interrupted me and my prey got away,” his accent was from East London, but sounded slightly different from many of those living in the city. As if he’d been away from here for a long time, and had not quite remembered how the accent was meant to sound.

I glanced up at him, still unable to breathe; the blade had punctured a lung. It wouldn’t kill me, but it would be a few hours until I was back to normal, and without my night vision I could have been staring into Merlin’s own face and I’d never have known.

The man got back to his feet and kicked me onto my back. “I should make sure you remember your time here, but I’m sure your comrades over there will be able to do that better than I could.”

ABOUT STEVE MCHUGH

AuthorPhoto_LiesRippedOpenSteve’s been writing from an early age, his first completed story was done in an English lesson. Unfortunately, after the teacher read it, he had to have a chat with the head of the year about the violent content and bad language. The follow up ‘One boy and his frog’ was less concerning to his teachers and got him an A.

It wasn’t for another decade that he would start work on a full-length novel that was publishable, the results of which was the action-packed Urban Fantasy, Crimes Against Magic.

Release Day Giveaway for The Ghost Chronicles by Marlo Berliner

On tour with Prism Book Tours.

Release Day Blitz for
The Ghost Chronicles
By Marlo Berliner

Intro to The Ghost Chronicles

THE GHOST CHRONICLES is a YA paranormal with romantic elements and adult crossover appeal. This is the story ripped from the headlines about a young person who dies tragically through no fault of their own. Unfortunately we read these stories nearly every day in the newspaper or see them on TV. The kind of young person you hear has died and you find yourself thinking, What a shame. They had so much going for them, such a promising future. Why did that have to happen? For this reason, this book was the book of my heart. I wanted it to be as realistic a story as possible of what it might be like to die tragically and be trapped in the afterlife as a ghost. Let’s face it, we all have to die and none of us can say with certainty what happens when we do. It’s the biggest fear of the unknown there is! Oh, we may think we know, or may have certain beliefs about what might happen, but what if it doesn’t happen that way? What if you are suddenly and unfairly taken from this life and now you’re stuck and don’t know why? How angry would you be? What would you do? How much would you begin to question all you’ve ever believed in? It won’t be completely apparent until later in the series, but I wanted it to be a story of great hope for anyone who has tragically lost someone they love, especially someone young.

The setting for most of the story was inspired by The Angel of the Sea, an award-winning bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ. This spectacular inn has been featured on several television programs and in magazines throughout the world. Most notably, it was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as one of the “Best Vacations in the World” and included in her television talk show. The Angel of the Sea is one of the most recognized Victorian structures in the United States. Legend has it that in the late 1960’s, a girl did fall to her death at the Angel of the Sea and did at one time, haunt the inn. The story of the girl has been included in several non-fiction books about ghosts in Cape May. Sarah’s character in THE GHOST CHRONICLES was inspired by this legend. You can learn more about the Angel of the Sea by visiting: http://www.angelofthesea.com/;

The cover was designed by the amazingly talented S.P. McConnell.

Isn’t it GORGEOUS!?!?!

The Ghost Chronicles
by Marlo Berliner
YA/Adult Crossover Paranormal
Paperbook & ebook, 298 Pages
November 2015 by Teddy Blue Books

Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

Michael Andrews had everything – a loving family, a great girlfriend and a promising basketball career. That was before the accident that took his life. Now, he’s a ghost, wandering among the living, struggling to understand why he’s stuck. All he wants is to move on.

That is until he meets Sarah, an attractive young girl who died just as tragically as he did. The only trouble is falling in love and binding oneself to another soul is forbidden, for it may keep one or both of the souls bound to earth for longer than they should be.

To make matters worse, there’s also a danger in going too far with Sarah, because the “joining” of two souls in the afterlife is also strictly forbidden and they don’t know what will happen if they do go that far. Each time they touch they can feel the boundaries of their energies slipping perilously into one another.

Things get even more complicated as Michael learns he’s being pursued. Demons are after him because he’s a marked soul, a soul the devil wants very badly for some unknown reason.

So, maybe falling in love in the afterlife isn’t such a good idea.

MY REVIEW

Of Ice and Air is an amazing fantasy novel with a cast of characters to love and hate and critters and worlds that stretched my imagination. Carlie Cullen has the ability to spin a tale that captures me in its web, unable to break free. She is an author that has a prominent place on my must read list.

Imagine if you can two worlds, one of Ice and one of Clouds. One a world of sharp angles, the other of curves. In one world the creatures fly, in the other world they run…very fast.

Kailani is the star of both worlds, a princess with one foot in the Cloud Palace and the other foot in the Ice Palace. She is headstrong and confident, some would say reckless.

On her twenty first birthday, Kailani embarked on a journey to solve the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. She stepped through a magical door, leaving her world of Clouds and into the danger of Ice. I have a feeling she is destined for great things and I am so very eager to find out what they will be.

I knew bad things were coming from the opening pages and I was eager to find out what they would be.

I love a strong, female protagonist, and I have every confidence that Kailani will solve the mystery. She will need to hone her magical skills, as well as her ability to fight with swords, knives and fists. She relies heavily on her intuition, which speaks to her loud and clear.

Being from a royal family, I can see some of the problems that will arise. Jealousy, treachery and greed are never in short supply. Danger and death confront her at every turn. I know the star of the show cannot die, can she? Every time her life is threatened, I fear for her safety and wonder how she will survive. I know things cannot go easily, what will attack, who will attack, who will get injured and who will die.

I love letting my mind run free, to live in the fantasy of odd creatures and magical abilities that make all things possible. I rode the Blenorai with her, over the ice, through the Lost Mire and the Silent Forest to the Land of No Souls.

The adventure is long and treacherous, fraught with danger. She fights, surviving with the help of magic and her animal companions, the Blenorai.

Carlie Cullen creates strong characters and original worlds that awe and amaze. Her heroine will fight bloody battles against man and monster alike. Kailani is a warrior princess in every sense of the word.

The ending seemed a bit abrupt, but I can live with it. The story is finished and I got the ending I wanted. How can I be upset with that? I think I feel this way because I did not want the story to end. I love a book that makes me want more…more…more.

I received an ARC Of Ice and Air by Carlie Cullen in return for an honest review.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos  5 Stars

ABOUT OF ICE AND AIR

On her 21st birthday, Princess Kailani’s father tells her that when she was a baby, her mother was abducted. She also learns she has family in another world.

Defying her father, she travels from her Cloud Castle home to the ice kingdom of Idenvarlis where Kailani’s instincts drive her to find the mother she doesn’t remember.

Gifted with the magic of two worlds, and skilled in the use of weapons, she journeys into unknown and dangerous territory. Despite her determination to rescue her mother, she’s forced to overcome new fears and find a way to cope with all she encounters.

However, a person in authority will stop at nothing to prevent either of them returning.

Kailani faces isolation, wild beasts, rogue soldiers, and more as she battles to return to the Ice Palace. With the stakes so high, can she make it back alive?

Grade A Stupid
by A.J. Lape
Series: Darcy Walker, #1
Genre: YA Mystery/Thriller/Humor

Fifteen years ago Darcy Walker’s parents thought it was a good idea to give her a unique name: Darcy, meaning “dark walker.” Whether that was a stroke of genius or stroke of stupid, they nailed the irony. She lacks direction, her grades stink despite a high IQ, she’s boringly average–although admirers claim otherwise–and heaven help her she’s infatuated with a bad-boy.

With her life spiraling out of control, things change when she finds a dead body. It jumpstarts her inner-verb, and she gets caught up in a situation she can’t let go.

Trouble is, will she live to see sixteen?

Meet A.J. Lape

A. J. Lape is the Amazon bestselling author of the Darcy Walker Series. She lives in Cincinnati with her husband, two daughters, an ADD dog, a spoiled hamster, and an unapologetic and unrepentant addiction to Coca-Cola–and a lifelong love affair with bacon she has no plans to sever. If the FBI ever checks her computer, she’ll be wearing prison orange due to the various “”wiki”” articles she looks up…all in the name of career research, of course.

Mazie Baby
by Julie Frayn
Genre: Psychological Suspense

When Mazie Reynolds was a young girl, she believed monsters lived under her bed. Now a grown, married woman, she discovers one sleeps in her bed.

Mazie schemes to save herself and her daughter. Her plan will work, if she can out-maneuver the monster who is a master of manipulation and control. She’s got one thing going for her, the one thing she truly owns. Mazie has moxie to the bone. But will it be enough?

The Necklace of Goddess Athena
by Effrosyni Moschoudi
Genre: Fantasy, Mystery, Supernatural

MY REVIEW

A time of Demons by Kathryn Meyer Griffith has a wicked cover. It gives me a feeling of impending doom. This is Book I of the Before The End Series and after reading this, I cringe at the thought of what lies ahead. This paranormal suspense novel had me, not just rooting for the gang, but rooting for one specific demon too. I want to know so much more about him, about Rayner.

Cassandra and Johnny made their way through life by singing in bars. Sometimes you just have to make do.  Her gift appeared after she was burned in the fire that killed her family, but she still had her brother, Johnny. She now lives in the upstairs of her Aunt Ellie and Uncle George’s duplex. Johnny insists on living alone.

She sees death and so much more.

Don’t even tell them what you see. Don’t ever tell them anything. Oh she’d learned.

Rayner is a blood demon, though most would call him a vampire. He didn’t know why his victims were suddenly haunting him and he hated it. He felt something big was coming.

Mannasseh watched out for the girl. She didn’t know her destiny. Cassandra had a vital part to play in the upcoming battle, the beginning of the end.

Rayner had been watching Cassandra and, literally, bumped into her. She was different. She could see him. How is that possible? He wanted learn more about her. I have a feeling about her and Rayner. Not sure what can become of that, but I am very curious.

The demons cloaked themselves in invisibility and were growing in number. They were arsonists, wife beaters, murderers, doing all they can to create discord and disaster. The demons had been discreet, but were getting bolder by the minute.

Cassandra was confused by her powers. The more they developed, the more she saw and the harder she tried to shrug it off.

Sarah, her best friend, is a psychic and reads Tarot cards and palms. She believes in magic and all the hocus pocus of the Gypsy fortune tellers. She felt terrible trouble was coming, a fight between good and evil, between life and death. Her boyfriend, Walter, works in a carnival and will have his role to play as well.

Cassandra couldn’t quit thinking about the fire that took her family, something felt off about it. Why did her and Johnny survive? Her Uncle George and Aunt Ellie had no answers either.

Thoughts flit through my mind as I read. I wonder, right along with Cassandra.

Circumstances have them coming together as the forces gather around them. They are an army of God.

Can the demons hear them? Is her intuition really the demons talking to her, telling her they know where she is?

The Rapture – angels fall. Can a demon be saved?

The more I read, the more involved I become. I ccouldn’t help but wonder how Kathryn was going to end this. But, wait, this is Book I, so stay tuned for Book II.

A Time of Demons is a different look at the end of the world, very thought provoking. I knew where things were going, but how it got there? Now that’s another story; a demonic, tornadic, apocalyptic ride.

I have been to Poplar Bluff, Mo, a location for A Time of Demons, but I didn’t see any angels or demons.

Demon snacks – people they fed on.

Cracked me up. I love a little humor with my blood sucking.

I received A Time of Demons and Angels by Kathryn Meyer Griffith in return for an honest review.

Giveaway – Falling Awake by Debrah Martin

FALLING AWAKE:

Magic or madness? Can your dreams really take over your life?

Falling Awake is the story of a book and the power of imagination to turn two lives upside down.

When Mary Parker finds an unusual book everything in her life changes. As she reads, she dreams, and the quiet, repressed woman is transformed.

She gives the book and the phenomenon a name, ‘falling awake’. The existence of the book seems to make others act out of character too. Joe’s usually dour father gambles with the factory where Mary works, and Joe, the romantic daydreamer, engages in a sexual eternal triangle to keep the dull routine of the accounts department at bay. The dominant partner in the triangle is Clem; dark and dangerous.

Extricating himself from Clem, Joe meets Mary. They fall in love and marry in haste when Mary falls pregnant, but this is no happy ever after tale. Their joy turns to misery when Mary miscarries and she turns inward to her darkening ‘falling awake’ world. Then Joe’s father dies, and he has to fight for control of the factory. He falls into Clem’s clutches again, and to make things worse, he believes Mary is going mad, and the people and places she remembers all just dreams dreamt inside her insanity. But then how can Joe remember them too?

Magic or madness? For Mary and Joe, the impossible – or the deadly – might only be a breath away.

Falling Awake is a brain teaser, an atmospheric mystery, an exposition of madness; an examination of the impossible, a fantasy, a ghost story, a psychological thriller, a love story, and a story of intrigue and sudden death. It will keep you awake at night, wondering, and pausing during the day, questioning …

One editor has already described it as:

“In the best traditions of Audrey Niffenegger and Carlos Ruiz Zafón…”

And others comment:

“…one of the most original, quirky manuscripts I’ve read for a long time…”

“…I especially like the fairy-tale and myth undertones that creep in from time to time throughout the novel: Sleeping Beauty clutching her book with echoes of Snow White in her glass coffin, the transformative red mac with its Red Riding Hood connotations, Mary’s Cinderella transformation from emotionally abused child to confident woman, the mermaid dress, Mariam’s Scheherazade dance, and especially the gambler as Rumpelstiltskin…”

“…a light, authoritative touch with both …story and characters.”

Debrah Martin is a British author writing under three different pen names and in three very different genres. She plots fast-paced thrillers as D.B. Martin, with the first in the Patchwork trilogy, Patchwork Man, having been recently awarded a coveted B.R.A.G. Medallion. Her YA teen detective series is penned as Lily Stuart – THE teen detective; irreverent, blunt, funny and vulnerable. Webs and Magpies are the first two books in the series. And as Debrah Martin she writes literary fiction. Her first literary fiction, Chained Melodies, a startling transgender story to rival The Danish Girl, and described pre-release as “…a beautiful book about love, acceptance and self-discovery…” was also released earlier this month.

Net Galley reviewers can access an ARC of Falling Awake there from 27th October, and all reviewers can obtain a copy and more information about Debrah’s other works by contacting her at the email address below.

Read an excerpt from Falling Awake –

‘What is life? An illusion, a shadow, a story.’

Pedro Calderon de la Barca

Prologue

No-one could sleep forever.

But apparently she could. It was the unusual challenge to the premise that had brought him here against the inclination to evade responsibility and slip home to his own dreams. She’d slept continuously for days now, without the need for water or sustenance; her only requirement, seemingly, a book. He peered curiously through the viewing panel as the attendant hovered behind him.

‘That’s her,’ the attendant announced as if pulling a rabbit from a hat. ‘Mary Parker.’

‘She’s very pretty,’ the tall young man declared, deep blue eyes narrowing to slits as he studied her. The woman’s long red hair cascaded over the side of the bed like blood streaming to the floor, her face a marble effigy of life. She reminded him of Millais’ Ophelia as she floated downstream on her layette of wild flowers – except this frozen beauty was merely asleep, not dead. He wondered what she was dreaming about. She seemed very familiar in a strange half-forgotten way.

‘Yeah, she is – and quiet now, but she weren’t once. Blimey – you should have seen her then, screaming and hollering. Wasn’t until we found that old book and gave it back to her that she shut up.’ The attendant picked at his nails and watched the tall young man lean in closer still. The corner of a book poked out from under the tightly clasped hands. ‘Then she just slept,’ the attendant added, shrugging his shoulders.

‘What’s its significance?’ the young man asked. He could just make out a title scrawled longhand across its spine. He wondered if the woman had written it on herself. He could only decipher the first word – ‘Falling’.

‘Not a clue, Mister; it’s just an empty book.’ The attendant shifted impatiently, as if tired of waiting, then asked, ‘How’d you know her again?’ He flipped the visitors’ page back to read the tall young man’s entry.

22nd Sept ’92: Time in – 5.45pm. John Hathorne, Director: Geo. Tooley & Sons.

‘I don’t really. She worked at the factory, that’s all. We have to be seen as caring employers so I’m here to check on her before we sign her off the books.’ He paused. Now he came to think of it he might have met her once. There had been a girl with bright red hair like hers the day he’d been shown round the factory. He’d been surprised by her scarlet mac because of the colour clash. He dragged himself from his reverie.

‘You said she had no family?’

‘Nope, apparently the mother died a while back and the neighbours say she’s been a bit odd ever since. Before they brought her in here she was wandering the graveyard down the road babbling about how she couldn’t find herself any more. Shame – when you got no-one.’

‘How do you think she can do it?’

‘What?’

‘Not eat or drink for so long – just sleep.’

‘Beats me. Maybe she’s not really there and we’re just imagining her.’ The young man stared at him. The attendant laughed. ‘Only joking. You done then?’ The attendant looked expectantly at him, and the young man found himself involuntarily offering his business card before collecting his briefcase and coat.

‘I suppose I could see if I can do something to help her if she comes back to the land of the living.’

The attendant turned the card over and read aloud, ‘Bespoke leisure wear and stage costumiers; themed event supplies a speciality.’ He studied the tall young man. ‘Versions of reality, huh? You’ll be getting a lot of custom soon, then.’ He sniggered. Outside the midweek rush hour traffic distantly hooted on its way home. The light had dimmed to the half-dusk of early autumn, but fallen leaves and skeletal trees said winter was already in the air.

The tall young man had spotted the now redundant leather straps on the side of the bed when he’d been trying to decipher the title of the book. The reddening round her wrists indicated where no doubt they’d been clasped until recently. ‘Halloween does tend to be a busy time,’ he agreed, suddenly uneasy. The place was oppressive and the sight of the comatose and confined woman depressed him. ‘Such a waste. Will she ever recover, do you think?’

‘Don’t know, mister. Not sure if she’s actually ill. Probably just the stresses of life – grief and disappointment. They do strange things to us, don’t they? Perhaps if she had someone to look after her, she’d get well again, but then who knows when anyone recovers from life.’ He laughed mirthlessly. ‘Maybe it’s better to just dream?’ The tall young man considered the idea for a while.

‘No, reality is always better, no matter how hard.’

He went back to the viewing window and studied the young woman for a few minutes more before gathering up the Essex County Gazette he’d brought with him and stuffing it under the arm carrying the briefcase. The pages creased and he made to flatten them, but stopped abruptly and tossed the paper back on the table the attendant had been sitting at when he’d arrived. He peered at his hand as if there was something wrong with it before shaking his head. The attendant cleared his throat meaningfully and opened the unit’s outer door.

‘I hope her dreams are sweet,’ the young man added sadly as the attendant ushered him out. The attendant flicked the light off and the room behind them sank back into shadow.

Neither saw the frozen figure thaw, stir, and open her eyes – deep green pools of luminescence. They fixed on the door and she listened intently to the low rumble of the tall young man’s voice as he made his goodbyes. The marble features creased to a frown and the slack body tensed. The book still clutched in her hand shivered.

‘No!’ she murmured. ‘No, no, no!’

Mena wants the Master Vampire of Montgomery, Alabama, but the wolf inside her wants the human homicide detective working the case of the man she murdered.
Mena’s life is complicated. She’s just murdered and buried her husband, the local wolf pack’s alpha – problem number one. Phoenix, the High Vampire, is the one her heart beats for, but not the one her wolf wants – problem number two. Her wolf pines for Alex, the human homicide detective who might just send her down for murder – three. Four, wolves and vampires don’t mix. Five, she has no clue how to be alpha, keep her pack safe while fighting off challengers with every step she takes, or what it would take to tame her wolf, which is the biggest problem of them all. Because the beast might just forfeit Mena’s life when its insatiable thirst for blood is unleashed on the world in just a few short days, with the next full moon.
Which should be doable. Except for the Nexus… and the little extra problem of bonding with a stranger.

EXCERPT
Ace

Stopping outside the door of Phoenix’s chamber, he tried to calm down, but the longer he thought about what had almost happened, the more he wanted to kill that fucking wolf.

Deciding that bonding with his Alpha and taking her away from him for good would be a worse punishment than killing the poor bastard, Ace met the master vampire’s eyes when he walked out into the corridor. “Lead the way. I’ll be gone before nightfall.”

“I apologize—” Phoenix started, but Ace held up his hand to stop him.

“Where is she?”

Phoenix nodded once, and then led the way down the long hallway. Ace’s pride fell into step behind him, and the others in Mena’s pack and the other vampire followed after them.

Phoenix stopped before a door then turned to look at Ace before opening it. “How are you going to do this?”

Ace shrugged. “I’ve never bonded with anyone. The Alpha in me will know what to do once I get near her.”

“Can we watch?” Heath said.

Ace shrugged again, and then reached out for the door handle. “Do what you want, just don’t try to stop anything from happening once I get in there with her. It may get rough. I’ll have to mind-rape her in order for my soul to connect with hers. I’m guessing she won’t consent to this on her own. If Mena has any control over her at all, maybe she can hold her back until I get in.”

Ace pushed his way into the holding room, and instantly felt the power wash over him from the other Alpha. He immediately felt drawn to her, nothing he had ever experienced before with any other Alphas.

He walked slowly toward the cell holding her, his amber eyes locking on a pair of silver wolf eyes. She bared her teeth and let out a low growl. He could still refuse to do this; nobody was forcing him to save her. He could kill her instead. Of course, he wouldn’t be able to take over her pack. The remaining survivors would have to fight over the position of Alpha, since two vampires and three of her pack would take their last breath the same time she did. That was something he’d found out all on his own before coming here, but after that stunt Peanut had just tried to pull, he was almost determined to make sure they all died.

He contemplated his options as he ripped off his sneakers and pulled the t-shirt over his head. Taking in a deep breath and letting it out in a rush, he unbuttoned and unzipped his jeans then pushed them to his ankles.

Stepping out of the denim, he turned and gave a nod toward the cage door. “Let’s do this.”

Phoenix pushed the silver key in the lock and turned it. He met the wolf’s eyes, and whispered, “Come back to me, Mena.” He pulled the door open, and the wolf lunged for the opening, but Ace was quick to shift, and his lion form knocked her back inside, rolling over the cement flooring with her until they reached the other side and the door was secure again.

Her claws and teeth sank into his flesh, but the adrenaline pumping through his system blocked any pain he may have felt otherwise. He knocked her off him and they began to circle each other.

As if his soul knew the reason he was here, a heavy pressure settled in the center of his chest, and then began to burn unnaturally.

“Let me in, bitch! This shit’s starting to hurt.”

She jumped on him, knocking him off balance, but his paws clung to her back and he rolled them across the floor again, stopping with her on the bottom. His jowls parted and his teeth clamped down on her throat, causing her to howl in pain.

Ace vaguely heard screams from the others, but he knew he had to keep his full attention on her; getting distracted could cost him his life, and that wasn’t something he was willing to give up for anything or anyone.

She squirmed under him, still trying to fight him off, but he could tell she was growing weaker. His jaw clamped down tighter, and he finally forced his way into her mind. The bonding had started. His soul had found hers. He was in.

Images of Mena’s past flashed through his mind so fast that he couldn’t tell when one ended and another started, but he saw them all, every memory, all the heartache and happiness the human had endured in her short life, and he knew that she was experiencing the same from him.

The feeling was surreal and unexplainable, but it felt right; he felt her power and his collide and weld together, infusing and tangling until it was one solid unbreakable force. As if two worlds collided, wolf and lion, their auras joined, co-mingled, until they blended together to form one entity.

Ace patiently waited for the wolf’s thoughts and memories to come to him, and after they did, he smiled to himself when he discovered her name.

He wasn’t prepared for what happened next, though. Nothing could have ever prepared him for it, not even if someone had told him it was going to happen.

Feelings and emotions that he had never known or felt before swept through him. A foreignness coursed through his veins, but it was welcome, exotic almost. The femininity of the emotions leant a softness to their edges, even in their rawness. He hated them and clung to their power over him at the same time. Nothing had ever been worse or better. It was like night and day, fire and ice, wind and water.

It was Ace and Andromeda. Two parts to a whole, something he had no idea he needed, until now. Why had he never realized he needed this?

For the first time in his existence, he finally found someone he was willing to give up his life for. She was his… his Andromeda.

When he felt the claws in his back retract, he began to shift back to his human form. As he opened his eyes, beautiful pale-green ones stared back at him.

“Andromeda,” he whispered. “I am yours.”

She smiled weakly. His heart melted.

She threw her head back and screamed at the top of her lungs, “Andromeda! My wolf’s name is Andromeda!”

“Mena!” the asshole who’d tried to assassinate him earlier shouted, and a growl vibrated out of Ace’s throat as his head shot around to glare at the guy. If Peanut thought he still had any chance with Andra, Ace was definitely up for the challenge now.

“Get Rhodes out of here!” Phoenix said.

“No—” Alex started, but Roel got in his face and backed him against a wall as he whispered something so low even Ace couldn’t make it out, but he guessed it was good advice, because Peanut stopped resisting, and then stormed out of the room without another word.

“Mena?” Phoenix said in a quiet voice.

“I can’t talk to anybody right now, Ace,” Andra said through his thoughts. “Please, just get me out of here. Tell them I will talk to them after I have rested. I am so tired.”

Ace got to his feet, then picked her up in his arms and walked to the cage door.

Phoenix unlocked the door and opened it for him. He met the vampire’s gaze as Andra turned her face into his chest, hiding her eyes from their company. “She said she will talk to everyone after she has rested. We will be in my room.”

With that, he walked out of the cage and carried her upstairs.
