Mortal Musings Cover

Muse Alexandra has had it with the arrogant, ungrateful humans she is obligated to inspire. When the internal ranting of her latest charge pushes her past reason, she disregards the rules and forces her own words through his fingers, and is instantly entrapped in mortal form. With no magic, no identity, and no resources, Allie has no alternative but to navigate the mortal realm, depending entirely on her reluctant host while discerning what exactly caused her transformation — and how to reverse it.

Brett doesn’t have a chance to consider the words that mysteriously showed up on his screen; he’s too distracted by the stunning woman who appeared in his office out of nowhere. Before his brain can catch up, Brett’s uninvited guest becomes enmeshed in his everyday life. Her artless innocence gradually lessens his suspicions. Most importantly, the writer’s block that’s been plaguing him dissolves under the fantasies the naively beguiling Alexandra inspires.

All too soon, the forced proximity sparks a confounding awareness neither writer nor muse are able to resist.

About Aria Glazki

Aria’s writing story started when her seventh-grade English teacher encouraged her to submit a class assignment for publication. That piece was printed, and let’s just say, she was hooked!

Since then, Aria has run a literary magazine, earned her degree in Creative Writing (as well as in French and Russian literatures), and been published in a few collections. Though her first kiss technically came from a bear cub, and no fairytale transformation followed, Aria still believes magic can happen when the right people come together – if they don’t get in their own way, that is.

Other than all things literary, Aria loves spending time with her family, including her two unbearably adorable nieces. She also dabbles in painting, dancing, playing violin, and, given the opportunity, Epicureanism.

MY REVIEW

I loved the first book, Andromeda’s Fall by Abigail Owen (see my review below), so I am very excited to read more in Sarai’s Fortune, Book II. Sarai’s Fortune picks up right where Andromeda’s Fall left off.

Sarai is a seer and a cougar shapeshifter. She ends up staying with Zac and his polar bear clan, because of the danger represented in the Carstair’s werewolf clan. She is petite, but a fighter. People see her as weak, shy and needing protection, but she is proficient in martial arts and her skill with knives is unsurpassed.

Zac is all man, except when he is a polar bear. LOL

The fight scenes are fantastic and the love scenes are not erotic, but adult. The cast of characters had me eating out of their hands, wanting to know what happens next. The world building made it easy for me to visualize the surroundings. Abigail Owens ability to spin a tale captivated me and I look forward to reading more of her work

I received a copy of Sarai’s Fortune in return for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

Zac Montclair’s first priority is to protect his people. With the escalating war between factions of shifters over land and resources, he has agreed to an alliance between his polar bears and the Shadowcat Nation of cougar shifters. But the treaty comes with a condition…he must accept one of their Seers into his Timik and put her under his personal protection.

Sarai Bouchard doesn’t need her supernatural gift to know that Kyle Carstairs’s obsession with controlling her ability will eventually result in her misery and demise. Her power is essential to her people’s survival, so when Kyle goes rogue, she’s sent to Zac Montclair to keep her safe. However, her visions reveal that while staying will lead to their becoming lovers, it also leads to his death. Leaving Zac will result in her own.

If Sarai can’t find a way to change the future, she will be forced to choose…save her lover or save herself.

REVIEW

I am loving this cover and am really curious about the Shadowcat Nation. It sounded different than the books I have read about shapeshifters and I am always on the lookout for a new slant on a familiar story.

The quick love is not a problem. They are “animals”, so they don’t waste any time. 🙂 I wish Abigail would have expanded on it a little bit more. Since blogging, I have come to enjoy learning more about the characters and why they do what they do.

Andromeda is a strong, kickass female. She’s intelligent, fierce and a fighter, yet she likes the girlie girl things too. She can be a softie and is a big romantic.

I can relate to Andromeda’s fight or flight feelings. Without training, I think I would be more reactive than proactive. Not so, Andromeda.

I thought I knew a lot of what would happen, but Abigail Owen threw in some curve balls that I didn’t see coming. The wide variety of  shifters made Andromeda’s Fall a novel and original story for me. I mean a polar bear? Have you read of a polar bear shifter before?

The first time they made love drew a laugh from me and I love their snarky banter.

The big fight scene is fully developed and detailed. Even though I knew the winners, I was totally engrossed.

Sarai appears in physical form at the end and I can hardly wait to read her story.

Even if fated, can a person’s choice change that?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Andromeda’s story. Abigail Owen took a familiar storyline, added her twists and originality, making this a great story and hooking me on the series.

I received Andromeda’s Fall by Abigal Owen in return for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

Andromeda Reynolds is being hunted. After witnessing her mother’s violent death at the hands of a pack of wolf shifters, Andie has devoted her life to protecting her community of cougar shifters from a similar fate. But now, a greater threat lies within her own pack, and she must run. If she stays, Kyle Carstairs will force their mating, seeking the added political power their union would provide.

Andie would rather chew off her own foot than end up with Kyle. Though, knowing him, she won’t live long either way. Andie’s only hope of survival is to mate Jaxon Keller, the Alpha of the Keller Dare with which she is seeking asylum. But before she can get to him, Andie must first go through A.J., one of the Alpha’s Protectors. What Andie doesn’t realize is that A.J. has secrets of his own. Water or Land ~ Of Ocean and Ash by @ADraeger

Of Ocean and Ash
by A.R. Draeger
Series: Falling In Deep, #3
Genre: Paranormal RomanceCover DesignerQuirky-Bird

Release Date: June 9, 2015

Of Ocean…

Cast into the sea at birth, human-born Ia found her adoptive family among the merfolk. While her underwater upbringing was peaceful, Ia’s blood-heritage and the strict societal rules of the merpeople lead her to wonder of the world above the waves.

And Ash…

When a storm lands Ia ashore, she discovers her body has transformed into the human she would have been. Taken in as property by a callous plantation owner, Ia works alongside the slaves until she can make her way back to the water. There is nothing Ia wants more than to go home, that is, until she meets a handsome, troubled man named Matthias, who has a touch that can be as kind as his tongue is harsh.

Torn between two very different lives, Ia must choose – stay in his world and risk her life for a love untested, or return to the familiar arms of the underwater world that raised her and risk losing what may be the greatest love she will ever know.

Will Ia’s choice lead to happiness or her destruction?

Summer was waning when I was born, marked by the heat leaving the waters and the nights growing longer. My family wanted to migrate with the rest of their people, but they waited for me in the stillness of the waves, keeping an ever-watchful eye.

Mother heard the wails of the fisherman’s wife the night the woman discovered she carried me in her womb. The fisherman and his wife lived next to the water in a small, dilapidated shack made of rotten wood and leaky thatch. They had six children before me, although Mother knew not in what mixture their genders numbered. All but two were taken away at birth. The couple had too many as it were for a meager fisherman and his wife, and I was yet another mouth to feed.

The fisherman’s cries of mercy woke my family the night I was born. My arrival was sooner than expected, his wife not having carried me nine months in her womb. I was tiny, frail. My left leg was misshapen, my head oblong.

Mother watched him from beneath the surface, saw his tanned sailor’s skin, ebony and white streaked hair, and grey-whiskered face. He looked down at me, the fragile bundle cradled in his arms, and cried out through parched lips and crooked, black teeth:

“Forgive me, O God! Have mercy on her. I leave her to your care.”

He dropped me in the water with a small plop.

My sister, Liliana, caught me before I plunged too far into the depths. My family crowded around me, anxious and excited. My uncles debated eating me, seeing my size and stature, convinced I would not survive. Mother waved them off and took me from my sister’s arms, cradling me as my still-human lips turned blue.

It was an enormous challenge for a human to come into the fold. Not many of us were capable of such a change, but Mother knew my lineage had been on and in the water. She had watched my father and his father before him.

She lowered her lips to my nose and mouth, and she breathed into me the life of the sea dwellers, the merfolk. I sputtered a bit, and my body shivered, unsure of the transformation. Mother held me tight, sang me lullabies of the whales, and when all my family had lost hope that I’d survive, I woke.

My scream was shrill, she said. Loud, piercing. She was proud, surprised at the pushing force of the water I had generated. She knew I would be a good Caller.

With that, they gathered to me – my mother, sister, uncles, aunts, and cousins – and in a ritual almost lost in the passage of time, sang as my mother fed me two drops of her blood.

My legs lengthened and molded together, as her nourishment pulsed through my body, changing me inch by inch. Where my feet had once been, two fins took shape, overlaid with iridescent blue scales.

The process was beautiful, my family told me, rare, and yet there I was, the adopted, healthy and changing. Born human, and through the grace and love of the one I would know as Mother, turned into a creature of the deep, a daughter of the ocean, a mermaid.

MY REVIEW

I am ecstatic to be able to share Book II of the Fire Chronicles, Laryn’s stoy by D’Elen McClain. This is one of the best dragon series I have ever read. I could not put it down. Dragons Don’t Love is an adult tale of romance and love that flows smoothly from the pages.

Laryn had been alone for 25 years, now it was his turn to claim his new bride. The symbiotic relationship the curse placed on both dragons and humans was misunderstood by both of them, but because of the dragons love of their brides, they are constantly learning more about them.

Laryn first meets Roxanne when she ends up on his back, trying to kill him. Silly human. She can’t hurt a dragon.

Laryn is stubborn and brings a lot of suffering onto himself, but that is the way of dragons and their pride. He has never been know for his gentleness with his new brides, but when he meets his warrior woman, Roxanne, he marvels at her desire to fight side by side with him. I love the cat and mouse game Laryn plays with Roxanne as he attempts to seduce her, but Dragons Don’t Love and he fights his feelings for her.

Dragons love to steal others treasures and a trip is made to Earth, where we find vampires, shapeshifters and an athlete named Tiger. LOL Thought that was great for some laughs.

Their relationship grows and develops, from acting like a couple of kids having temper tantrums, to adults learning to love and live together. The characters personalities shine through making me love them all, especially Ashrac. Who doesn’t love a baby dragon?

The writing and dialogue had me hanging on D’Elen’s words. At times it was humorous, other times sad, yet other times so very touching.

After Dragons Don’t Cry, I knew where this story was going, but I am still amazed at the ride, reading page after page, unable to put it down until the last word was read. I hated it to end.

Next…Sarn’s story, Dragons Don’t Forgive. I think there may be a new twist in this one and I am very eager to find out.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

It’s finally the day of claiming. A dragon charges in breathing fire and leaves with an unwilling captive as his new bride. Roxanne, one of the brides he will chose from, wants nothing to do with the tradition that has gone on for thousands of years. From an early age she’s had one goal…

Kill the dragon.

Laryn—arrogant, gorgeous, and heartbroken since the death of his former bride has a plan for the new one. He will never love again. Of course, the last thing he expects is a feisty warrior landing on his back with a sharp sword in her hands intent on death. His death.

It’s a match made in… well… you need to read to find out.

A dragon shifter fairy tale for adult readers.

EXCERPT

Laryn

I admire my nakedness in the looking glass, flex my muscles and watch them ripple with undeniable power. I am more than a mere human. I’m faster—stronger—deadlier.

I am dragon.

“Why are humans so inferior?” I ask myself aloud. Their weak bodies give them no advantages. And they are ugly, even their females. Their puny appearance and sickly skin tone only enhance their frailty. At least some of the women are decent companions if they don’t nag too much. I grumble loudly. Chances are I’ll be stuck with a whiner again. I’ll not put up with it and I’ll quickly teach her to fear me.

As amazing as I am in my human form, it holds no comparison to my dragon, which is superior to all others. My mind flashes to Acasia, Bastian’s mate. Yes, she is beautiful, but all her damn rules ruin it. It doesn’t matter that she is the only female dragon in existence. Today, I chose my new bride at the claiming ceremony. Her training will begin immediately after our return to my lair. The sooner she stops the waterworks and settles in, the better it will be for her.

I turn and walk through the large doors of my bedroom and stand on a rounded stone ledge looking over my kingdom. The wind whips across my naked body and blows hair into my eyes. It needs trimming. I will gift my bride with the privilege, if she cooperates. It will be her first reward, well… after I fuck her, of course. Fucking always comes first. Bastian had no clue how to control a human female and now he’s stuck with Acasia. I always show the bride who’s boss and immediately put them in their place. My way works best.

I spring from the ledge and dive off headfirst in my human form. I pull in the magic and my dragon bursts free—the small amount of pain completely overshadowed by my majestic form. I spread my wings and admire their fifty-foot span of beautiful blue against the morning sky. Fire erupts from deep in my chest and shoots more than one-hundred feet in front of me. My roar echoes through the canyon and reverberates off the cliffs.

In all my blue glory, I fly to claim my bride.

Roxanne

I sharpen my two-foot steel blade before holding it up against the morning sun. The light shines off the blade, which fractures it into multiple beams of brilliance. Soon it will bathe in blood—the magical blood of a dragon. I will clean off the gore using my white bride’s dress and dance in the red puddles after I kill him. No sister of mine will become a dragon’s bride today. My death for this deed will be satisfying—the ultimate sacrifice.

I’ve spent most of my life preparing. No one in the village knows my true intentions. My parents think I’m reconciled to my fate. I was born during the span of years that established me as a claiming bride. A week ago, a proclamation went up throughout town informing the brides that our time has come. Our duty to keep the peace between dragons and humans demands our presence at the claiming. Today.

Early on, I used my family’s need for fresh meat and my father’s disability as the reason for learning to hunt. Every minute of every day that I could safely get away from home, I sharpened my skills. If the men of my town won’t defend the women, I will.

Slipping off my dreary daily garments, I don the beautiful, white, sacrificial gown required to entice my enemy. I secure the sword into the hidden back sheath knowing I can remove it and use it before anyone stops me. The virgins of this town will truly have something to celebrate tonight. I adjust my dark hair so it completely covers the blade’s grip. I walk from the glade with my shoulders back and my head held high refusing to acknowledge my racing heart and shaking knees.

I have a dragon to kill.

Does a beast have feelings ~ Dragons Don’t Cry by D’Elen McClain

MY REVIEW

I recommend Dragons Don’t Love by D’Elen McClain to anyone who loves fantasy and enjoys some adult situations. The sex scenes are often humorous and I would not label this as erotica.

I love dragons, so when I saw this cover and an opportunity to read Dragons Don’t Love, the story of Bastian and Acasia, I jumped at it.

Hera cursed the dragons after wiping out all but four males. Each will have their chance to find their soul mate, once very hundred years. Her daughter, my sister, was dead because of Drakon, a dragon, but Angelos thought it was wrong punish them all and would do what she could to watch over them.

The claiming brides, women between he ages of seventeen and twenty one, appeared for the dragon to make his choice.

Acasia is now on of them.

When the dragon came, Acasia marveled at its strength and beauty, was drawn to it, thinking, it’s mine.

Acasia is a nerd. Instead of dreaming of a man, like the other girls her age, she is fascinated with mathematical facts and figures. I loved the scene where Bastian is playing cards and learns of just one of Acasia’s many talents. She is not a lovey dovey person and I can relate to that. Acasia’s fiery personality and verbal assaults had me in stitches. I loved her playful manner with man and beast. Me thinks she will rule the dragon before all is said and done.

My heart went out to Bastion. As a dragon, he is immortal. He claims his bride and each dies, leaving him alone again. Bastion vowed not to let another break his heart. Dragons Don’t Cry and he wouldn’t, but Acasia is different from the others. Would she win his heart?

The vivid description of the dragon had me marvel at his beauty and her puking episode almost made me upchuck. I laughed at his sexual discomfort as a dragon and a man.

I laughed out loud, when she wouldn’t beg for her life, but told him, “Eat me.”

I loved when she punched him in his bossy dragon nose.

Predictable, but that’s okay. I am very curious to see where it goes and am loving reading the story to find out. Dragons Don’t Cry is written with humor and makes me smile.

From sad to happy, savage to sweet, a fun and lovely fantasy romance. I loved learning about Bastian and love through the innocent child-like eyes of Acasia and watching them both grow and change, as the characters developed more fully.

All of a sudden a vampire appears…and other shapeshifters. Very interesting.

Awesome. A fantastically original story of dragons that leaves me breathless waiting for Dragons Don’t love, Laryn’s Story.

I received this ARC for review in return for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

When Supernatural Investigation Bureau agent Bluebell Kildare (a.k.a. Blue) arrives at the scene of the crime, it’s obvious the grotesquely damaged body of the deceased teenage boy was caused by far more than a simple hit and run; and she vows to catch the killer. Using her innate sixth sense, Blue uncovers a powerful magical artifact nearby. She soon discovers it acts as a key to an ancient Grimoire that was instrumental in the creation of the Vampire breed and still holds the power to unravel the boundaries between Earth and the Plane of Fire.

Blue and her clever wolf Varg follow a trail that starts at the Cock and Bull Tap and leads all through the town of Crimson Hollow. Between being sidelined by a stalker who sticks to the shadows and chasing a suspect who vanishes in thin air, the case is getting complicated. If that isn’t enough, Dark Vampire activity hits a record high, and hate crimes are increasing. However, it’s Blue’s growing feelings for Jack Tanner, her sexy Daylight Vampire boss, that just might undo her.

While Blue searches for clues to nail the perpetrator, it seems someone else is conducting a search of their own. Who will find whom first?

Danger lurks in every corner, and Blue needs all her focus in this increasingly dangerous game or she risks ending up the next victim.

AUTHOR BIO

Lilo Abernathy is a somewhat eccentric, deep-thinking, warm-hearted young woman of at least 43 years. She started out as a restaurant chain hostess and worked her way up to the exciting world of global mergers and acquisitions. She has enjoyed an on again/off again relationship with formal education and has been affectionately referred to as information hound. In the evenings, she fills her writing breaks by scanning the internet for answers to provocative questions, such as: “What causes diamonds to be formed in different colors?”

One thing that never changes is Lilo’s ongoing love affair with books. A born bibliophile, by age ten she finished all the children’s books in the house and started devouring the adult section. By age 15, she was working her way through grocery store book aisles and libraries. Just as Picasso had his blue period, Lilo had her own periods of readership–urban fantasy, paranormal romance, Gothic novels, etc. Now she’s planning on creating a bookshelf for you to enjoy.

DESCRIPTION

This sequel to “Eye of the Wolf” finds Melora St. James working to restore an endangered shorebird to the coast of Lake Superior. Melora’s peace and her focus on the piping plover are interrupted when Drew Tamsen, the boyfriend she thought she lost to another woman and another way of life eleven years ago, shows up on her office doorstep. He wants her back. They have a few things to work out first: Drew chose life as a werewolf over being with Melora, and after a painful divorce, Melora is in no hurry to trust or give her heart to another man — even if he’s one she never quite got over. Their story is interwoven with that of the plovers, who are threatened by foxes, loggers and the Federal Aviation Administration. Then there’s Demetri, a mysterious boy Melora and Drew find lost on the beach. In helping Demetri discover who he is and make his first real friends, Melora and Drew learn secrets about themselves, building community, and coming to terms with the past.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Monday, June 19

Melora parked her car in the lot by the Sky Harbor Airport and started along the beach to the plover site. It was evening. A mist had hung in the air for most of the day, but it burned off in the late afternoon, and the sky was a clear turquoise blue. The warm, still air caressed her as she strolled alone through the sand. The plover chicks were a few days old. This was Melora’s first opportunity to visit since their hatching. Normally, she would be walking fast in anticipation, but she was tired. It had been a long work day and she missed Drew. They had talked on the phone again last night. Although there was no change in the stalemate questions, there were some new developments with Lana and Drew’s boys. Lana had announced to Drew that she was moving to Australia with her boyfriend. She said that Drew could have the boys, but she intended to visit them or bring them to visit her several times a year. Drew got the impression that Lana’s boyfriend wasn’t into children, and that the boys disliked him. Lana was working on documents giving Drew full custody. So the boys would be his to take where he pleased. This was a great relief. Although Melora suspected the lure of Australia was just more exciting than Michigan to Lana, part of her hoped the woman had seen how torn Drew was over the situation and that she decided to give him a break for once. Lana wasn’t moving for a few weeks, so she could take the boys if Drew wanted to make another trip to Minnesota. And he did, although Melora protested that it was her turn. But Drew knew how important the plover project was to her, and how worried she was that something else unexpected would happen to the birds, so he wouldn’t hear of her leaving Duluth now. Melora was grateful for his understanding. Melora could see the boundary log coming up. She knew the plovers could be ranging outside the site with their chicks, so to avoid them, she started traveling inland toward the dunes. But before she left the water’s edge, she turned to the lake and let her gaze settle on the flat horizon. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Spontaneously, she raised her arms to shoulder height, as if to hug the lake. Energy seeped back into her. A sense of freedom and well-being surrounded her. It was so peaceful. Melora lowered her arms and opened her eyes, becoming self-conscious. She looked around, but did not see anyone pointing and laughing at her. She chuckled and turned inland. The sand was still warm from the afternoon sun. It sifted soft and gritty between her toes in her sandals. Melora kept to the low spots between the dunes, the grasses whispering her passage. She tried not to step on the thin strands of greenery since she knew the grasses were rare and easily disturbed. Seth had spoken with her earlier that day. He had contacts in the Twin Cities who knew FAA Bob and had shed some light on the man’s motivations, or lack thereof. Seth said that Bob used to date an environmentalist. The woman had worked for one of the nonprofit groups active in Minneapolis. Their relationship ended on a bad note, so to exact a strange sort of revenge, Bob had it out for any projects that carried the faintest whiff of environmental preservation. That must be why his eyes were so flat during my descriptions of the plover project, Melora mused, and why my peace radar was buzzing an alarm. She felt sorry for him, but really, a failed love affair was no reason for Bob to interfere with projects his former girlfriend wasn’t attached to. Or any projects she was attached to, for that matter. It would have been like Melora hating all wolves after Drew had decided to live with them. And, of course, she didn’t. Men. Some men. It was too bad. During the past few weeks, Melora had watched Trevor and Samantha grow closer. Samantha often stopped by the office to visit, and she had seen them at musical events or sailing the Pilgrim Soul, sometimes with Demetri, sometimes not. Melora was happy for them, and perhaps a bit jealous, too. She wished she and Drew could see each other as often. Melora sighed and paused at the water’s edge, scanning for signs of the plovers. Seeing a blur of orange legs, she took up her binoculars. The tan and white plumage of a plover filled her view. She watched a few moments. Then, wanting to be closer, she walked through the dunes. From her research and the reports of the monitors, she knew they weren’t as skittish now that they weren’t nesting. The chicks could run almost as fast as the adults, and she guessed that made the parents less wary. When she was about twenty-five feet away from the water, Melora stopped. She watched for a while without the binoculars, not wanting to have the artificial device between her and the birds. She marveled at the three chicks. They zoomed around the adults like brown-spotted cotton balls on little stick legs. She felt a grin of delight cross her face. She couldn’t believe how small and fast they were. The monitors had removed the exclosure. Now that the chicks were off the nest, the plovers didn’t need its protection. Soon, the monitors would catch the chicks and band them – putting light-weight colorful strips of aluminum around their legs. Once the chicks grew and migrated, the bands would help plover monitors in other parts of the country identify them. Seeing the chicks reminded Melora of Demetri. She supposed it was because he was a little chick of a human. And it was partially thanks to him that this small family had survived. One recent evening after work, Melora had been mingling with the tourists at the ship canal. She had seen Demetri waving with Samantha from the stern of the Pilgrim Soul as Trevor piloted it under the lift bridge and between the piers, out into Lake Superior. Demetri seemed to be thriving. Such a burden he carried — the burden of the entire planet. Since the sweat lodge ceremony, Melora had been researching climate change – what was known about it, what was being done. She was puzzled that her own organization, The Nature Conservancy, wasn’t doing anything about it yet. She’d have to see if she could change that. Only international organizations like the United Nations seemed to be tackling it. Yes, the problem was global, but there were things that could be done in the U.S. to affect it. Perhaps car manufacturers could produce cars that got better gas mileage. Maybe changes could be made to fossil fuels to minimize carbon emissions. More trees could be planted – something, anything. Although Melora couldn’t quite grasp what climate change would mean for her hometown of Duluth, she knew it was a vital issue, now more than ever since Demetri’s purpose had come to light. The plover chicks still scooted here and there on the sand. Melora moved closer, almost without realizing it. What would climate change mean to birds like this? Would it make it harder for them to migrate because there would be more storms? Would the beaches they needed for nesting be wiped out by wave action and higher lake levels? Would the bugs they ate become scarcer as temperatures changed? She wished she knew. It comforted her that Demetri was here. It meant that God, the Great Spirit, the Supreme Being – whoever — was aware of the problem and was going to set it right, despite the ignorance of most humans. The one thing she knew for sure is that she would help that little boy however she could. One of the plover parents called to the other, “Peep-lo, peep-lo.” Its song was so melodious and light, Melora’s thinking jumped to past changes that had occurred on the Earth. That birds might once have been dinosaurs was a concept as challenging to grasp as climate change. How could the plover’s song have evolved from a heavy, roaring, dinosaur? But maybe paleontologists and movie producers had it wrong. Perhaps dinosaurs didn’t roar. Maybe their voices were light and sweet all along and their bodies just grew into shapes that better matched their songs. She liked the idea of flesh conforming to sound. What adaptations might birds develop to cope with climate disruption – if they could adapt fast enough? She knew that the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere were rising faster than ever before. How could anything adapt to that? And what if birds couldn’t adapt fast enough and became extinct? What difference would that make? Melora remembered the Hawaiian Shirt Man who had criticized the plover project. It had been hard enough to come up with a response to his criticism about protecting shorebirds. What if someday they needed to justify protecting all sorts of birds? Melora mused for a while about why birds mattered. She supposed arguments could range from the amount of revenue bird watching brought into communities, to maintaining the web of life, to their beauty, to what they could teach us about flight, to pest control, to dispersing seeds, to things humans couldn’t even imagine yet. It bothered her to even have to think about justifying a species’ existence. It smacked of hubris. Birds mattered because they were here. If they were here, they were important. Melora walked nearer to the plovers until she was out of the dunes and onto the broad expanse of sand. She watched as both parents worked together to feed the chicks and look for predators. Demetri had said the plovers named their babies. She wondered what the chicks’ names were. Her approach didn’t seem to bother the birds, perhaps because her movements had been so gradual. Waves gently lapped the shore. Sometimes the plovers got their feet wet, other times they didn’t. She couldn’t see any rhyme or reason to it. She stifled a laugh as both the male and female brought a bug to one of the chicks at the same time. The chick just stood there as both parents tried to feed it. Finally, the female realized the technique wasn’t going to work. But instead of going to find the other chick, she waited until the beleaguered chick had eaten the bug offered by the male, and then she fed it. The scene caused a pang in Melora’s heart. One parent was not flitting away, doing its own thing. Both were engaged in taking care of the chicks. There was no question about their commitment to the chicks and to each other. There could be no other way, it seemed. Melora wasn’t sure she would have noticed these things before her experiences of the past few weeks – with Drew coming back into her life and making her think about commitment, with meeting Demetri and Samantha, and from hearing the revelations by Slow Turtle. If she didn’t know better, she’d say she had grown. She had started to care about things beyond herself — to learn to call another’s name more than her own. And the plover project was her way of giving back to the community as well as giving back through supporting her friends. It seemed like everything was coming together — like she’d been part of a great circle that was missing a large section. Now that section was sliding into place, smoothly and quietly but with purpose. If her head and heart were not linked yet, they were well on their way. The sun was beginning to set over the Duluth hills, the sky changing from periwinkle blue to a pinky-red, and the underside of scattered clouds glowing. The plovers made their way closer to her until they came within a few feet. She could make out the individual speckles on the chicks’ backs – see their shiny dark eyes. She stood motionless, almost afraid to breathe. Now the parents approached, treating her as if she were nothing more than a rock or a log on the sand. One caught a fly and fed it to a chick. Such a never-ending job, this caring for the young; would it be like that for her if she ever had a baby? If it was, she sure hoped she would have help. Drew seemed like the type to stick around. He already knew what taking care of children was about. She remembered their first night together after so many years apart. Hadn’t he been the one to bring up the idea of having children? He had been half-joking, but she could tell from his eyes that there was seriousness to his statement, too. Would she be able to handle having a family? What if the demands became too overwhelming and she bolted – handed Drew the baby and said, “I’m outta here?” Deep down, she knew she would never do that. Her innate sense of responsibility would not let her. But she would have to stay with Drew if they were to raise a family – stay with him for a long time. No flitting away. Could she handle that? And there were Jason and Tony to consider. She would have a ready-made family if she and Drew continued their relationship. She hoped to meet the boys someday soon, and see how it felt to be with them. Melora looked up from the sand and saw the sun’s rays shining over the crest of the hill, spreading across the sky in multi-color beams, tracking patterns in the water. The birds continued to mill about her feet as if she were a rock, or better yet, one of them. The brightness seemed to enter her eyes and go directly to her heart where it spiraled and spread through her ribs, to her shoulders and down her arms. She wanted to lift her arms again like she had before at the water’s edge. She hesitated, not wanting to scare the birds. But the feeling seemed to demand it of her. Slowly, she raised her arms to shoulder height, unbending. She didn’t want to take her eyes off the light. She let it infuse her. Sensing that the birds were not skittish, she continued to raise her arms over her head. She held them there, half expecting light to shoot out through the tips of her fingers as if she were a conduit. If she opened her mouth, the light would shoot out from it, too, like she was some supernatural character in a novel. Melora stood, arms straight up, for several minutes. Then she closed her eyes and lowered her arms. She looked down at the birds and they were standing around her in a half-circle, facing her, watching her. She dared not breathe, much less speak. A wisp of a breeze broke the spell and the plovers scurried away on bird business, as if nothing unusual had happened.

Waiting On Wednesday ~ The Mackenzie Duncan Box Set ~ Feature and Giveaway

Title: The Mackenzie Duncan Box Set
Author: Adrianne James
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance

Mackenzie Duncan’s whole life is ripped from her by the teeth of a strange wolf with yellow-green eyes. Learning quickly that she now lived by the moon cycles was hard enough, but finding her heart torn between two hot Werewolves amidst the blood and violence her new life brought was almost too much to handle. When her new pack’s secrets came to light, Mackenzie’s conscious wouldn’t let her stay quiet. Follow along the amazing journey as Mackenzie fights for what her heart wants and what her kind needs.

____________________________________________________________

The Mythology department at prestigious Harvard University is tiny—and Mackenzie Duncan has just been selected as one of the lucky few. Her love for myths and legends is strong, but she never thought any of it could be real.

After being attacked by a large wolf while walking home alone, Mackenzie realizes something is not right. She heals quickly, is suddenly super strong, and is experiencing mood swings that can’t possibly be normal. The myths she’s studying aren’t myths at all. Werewolves are real and she’s one of them. Fear of what she is, and who she might hurt sends Mackenzie running from the life she’s worked hard to build–and straight into the arms of a handsome Were named Geoff and into the home of his pack. Living with her new pack takes the edge off her confusion and self-loathing, but the arrival of new pack members changes the dynamic, and tests Geoff and Mackenzie’s growing relationship.

The hardest part of being a werewolf is having no control and no memory of her time as a blood thirsty beast. When a moon cycle passes and she actually remembers bits and pieces of the night, she starts to ask questions, and the more questions she asks, the more she realizes she doesn’t like the answers. Can she set aside her own sense of morals to belong to a pack that is like a family or will she leave everything behind yet again in search of a life she can be proud of?

Mackenzie Duncan found out that pack life wasn’t for her. Now she is running for the second time in the six months since she was bitten and turned into a Werewolf. But this time, she isn’t alone. This time, she has Geoff and Liam with her, two very hot Werewolves vying for her heart.

But her companions aren’t her focus. The only thing she can focus on is getting far from her old pack and their murderous ways. Only, she doesn’t just want to run. She wants to warn every pack she can that their lives are in danger too. No one should be turned against their will like she was and no other pack should have to surrender to the ideas of a centuries old, power hungry woman.

Not only does Mackenzie have to deal with her crazy ex-pack leader sending people out to kill her, she has to keep both men at arm’s length (and that proves to be much more difficult than she thought), but she finds out more about her own life and heritage than she ever thought imaginable.

And suddenly, everything makes sense…

Ever since Mackenzie Duncan watched her skin knit together after being ripped apart by a blood thirsty Werewolf, her life has been anything but normal. After being part of a pack with more secrets than the FBI, Mackenzie left and tried not to look back. Her old pack leader Margaret, a Royal wolf hungry to regain the throne and rule over all the world’s Werewolves, made that impossible. Figuring out who to trust was full of heart break, but moving forward left her with a clear path ahead.

After Mackenzie found out that she, too, is part of the Royal blood line and that she had inadvertently endangered every pack she came into contact with, she feels that it is her duty to help stop Margaret at all costs before any more blood is shed or another life is lost.

Despite traveling the world with Liam, the man she loves, her life is in danger at every turn in her hunt for other Werewolves willing to stand against Margaret. Who better to fight then the blood line that shunned the role of power centuries ago?

Bloody battles surround her at every turn and when Mackenzie thinks all is lost, she has to find a way to embrace her past and accept her future.
