Monday Mini #3 – Deadly Paradise by Charles Ray

Deadly Paradise (An Al Pennyback Mystery) by Charles Ray

Deadly Paradise: An Al Pennyback Mystery photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

I won this signed first edition paperback.

I love adding books to my collection.

A sniper crashes the wedding.

I would classify this mystery as a light and entertaining summertime read. I loved it and read until midnight, because I had to know what was going to happen. Al and Sandra are characters I want to spend more time with. Charles Ray is a prolific writer and after reading this book, I can see myself stocking up for many hours of entertaining reading.

Trick or TREAT – Ghosts and Vampires, Oh My!

I am a huge fan of Taylor Dean’s and am happy to share in her Halloween celebration – ghosts and vampires, oh my.

The covers of her books are very distintive and I love their artistic flavor. But what is even more surprising are the stories inside.

These are books that all supernatural fans will want on their to-be-read shelf.

The Middle Aisle has one of my favorite endings of all time. I guess you would say it is bittersweet. It put a smile on my face with tears in my eyes and sticks with me even now, months later.

My Review

A PARANORMAL ROMANCE

Zoe Grayson needs a change. So, she moves to another state, purchases an old, dilapidated 1920s Victorian Mansion, and sets out to restore it to its former glory. As she begins the restoration, she finds herself falling in love with the old house . . . not to mention its illustrious builder, Mr. Lancaster. Zoe becomes obsessed with the house as she discovers its secrets; hidden rooms, secret passageways . . . and a mysterious man who seems to think the house is his. Who is he? More importantly, how does he live in her home unseen and unheard?

The unexpected answers leave her reeling—and questioning everything she’s ever known. To her dismay, Zoe’s actions land her in the local psychiatric hospital, scheming for ways to return to Lancaster House . . . and the love of her life.

My review

The Sequel to Lancaster HouseZoe Grayson is back in Lancaster House, ordered to bed rest for the duration of her unexpected pregnancy. Doctor Wade Channing, her overzealous psychiatrist, is living in Lancaster House, taking care of her, waiting on her, and tending to her every need. It seems to be the perfect arrangement.There’s just one catch.

She has to tell him her story—everything that has happened in her life since the moment she escaped from Serenity Hills. It’s been quite an adventure to include renovating another home and a walk down the middle aisle.

But, that’s all over now. Nothing is real. It never was.

How did she end up in this miserable situation?

No Maddie, you are not in Heaven and you cannot go Home – Survival by A. M. Hargrove

An epic story of  romance and science fiction that is out of this world.

I won some of A. M. Hargrove’s books on her blog a while back. I am so glad that I got the first three books in this series. I wanted to read one, review one, read another, review another, but I couldn’t quit. I must go on! So I read them all, except for the newly released ReEmergent, which I will be reading very soon. Follow fundinmental for the upcoming reviews of the rest of the series.

Beginnings, the Prequel Novella for the Guardians of Vesturon and Survival, Book I of the Guardians of Vesturon are free. Grab your copies and dive into the wonderful world of A M Hargrove.

 A M Hargrove is offering the rest of the series for the giveaway at the end of the post.

Maddie awoke to a winter wonderland in the Smoky Mountains. She made snow angels, feeling like she was in heaven. She knew she needed to head down the trail, so she packed up and began walking. She saw the tracks in the snow and thought it was lucky for her that she wasn’t all alone in the forest. Until she met HIM.

 photo snow_angel.jpg

My mother had died in car accident when I was 11. My father and I were close and we loved to hike the Smoky Mountain Trails. He taught me everything I would need to know  to survive in the wild. While still in high school, my father died of a heart attack.  Now I was truly alone.

I wanted to go to a college that was close to the Smoky Mountain trails that I loved so much. My first day at college, I was happy when Cat and I hit it off so quickly. I thought how lucky I was that Cat loved hiking too. But Cat was going home for Christmas, so I would be backpacking alone for New Years.

Darryl had come to the Smoky Mountains to hunt and it wasn’t four legged prey he was after. winter forest trail photo: 3/15 - Enchanted Forest in Winter IMG_0096.jpgIt  was Maddie’s bad luck to meet him on the trail.

Because of a lax moment, I had been caught off guard. I fought to pull myself together and control my wild thoughts. If I was to survive, I would have to use everything I knew.

He had laughed as he tortured me. How could someone be so evil? The pain overwhelmed me and I grew weaker by the second. I knew my time was running out. I couldn’t take much more. If I was going to make a move, it would have to be now.

I knew I was going over the cliff. I couldn’t save myself. I knew I would not survive.

The lights woke me. Am I in heaven?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
“There are many things that are possible, if you only believe.”
A beautiful cover that quickly drew me into Maddie’s story of love, romance, tragedy and SURVIVAL.
All I have to see is serial killer and I will pick up the book. I knew this was going to be so much more than that. I couldn’t see how it would get to the sci-fi part, but Anne Hargrove’s writing made the story flow smoothly and seem so real, that I couldn’t put the book down.
If there are aliens, they would have to be so much more advanced than us. Who is to say what is out there. The Universe is a large place. Why are we so arrogant to think we are the only ones?
I can’t begin to describe the brutality of the attack on Maddie and the subsequent torture. Her strength and determination are qualities to be admired and Anne does a fantastic job in describing the scenes in detail.  I can only think that it was her will to live that kept her alive long enough for a chance  encounter to save her.
I know the answer to the mystery of her rescuer is coming and I am very curious.
I was so involved in the story, I couldn’t take the time to make notes.
As I try to put myself in her place, I can’t help but hope I would respond as well as she did.
Vesturions: “We are the peacekeepers of the universe, not the destroyers.”
To understand how the Vesturions fall in love so quickly, I must explain. Vesturions bond to their soul-mate and it is for life. It is a physical thing and it consumes them. They  have a high regard and reverence for their mate. To a human it would seem they are overly possessive and that could cause many problems. I chuckle as I think about the things in store for a man of Vesturon who dares to fall in love with a human, especially one as strong and independent as Maddie.
A M Hargrove’s description of Maddie dancing made me think of Elaine on Friends. I could picture it in my mind as I laughed. The book contains a lot of humor and it is woven into the story so well it seems as if I am a part of it, laughing along with the characters.
Maddie tries to explain our sayings and slang to the Vesturions:
animal that ate the bird – cat that swallowed the canary
cow in a glass store – bull in  a china shop
feel like we are heading into the wolves – being fed to the wolves
When I got to the last page, the last paragraph, the last sentence, the last word, I couldn’t stop. This book has an awesome cliffhanger. I HAD to know what would happen. So I grabbed the next book and jumped right in. And the next book.
Again I would like to thank Anne Hargrove for the giveaway that brought Survival and the Guardians of Vesturon to me!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Image of A.M. HargroveOne day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodgeball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone and hit #4 on her speed dial.
Boss: Hello
A.M.: Boss, is that you?
Boss: Why yes, A. M., who else would be answering my phone?
A.M.: Er… right. Well, I’m calling to let you know you can pick up my luxury Ford Focus at Starbucks near the interstate.
Boss: Why ever would I want to do that?
A.M.: Because I quit!
A.M. hit the end button and speed dialed her husband.
A.M.: Hi hubs, can you pick me up at Starbucks?
Hubs: Sure… Having some car trouble?
A.M.: Not at all. I don’t have a car to have trouble with because I just quit my job.
Hubs: WHAT?!
A.M.: It’s time for a new career and I am going to be a very famous novelist.
So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as an author of self-published books. Her books include the Young Adult/New Adult series, The Guardians of Vesturon (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant and the novella Beginnings) and the Adult novels Dark Waltz (A Praestani Novel) and Edge of Disaster. (It didn’t happen exactly like that, but you get the idea!)
SYNOPSIS
Welcome to Hell Week. You have seven days to find him…
At Wexman University, male students will do anything to get into a top fraternity. They’ll prove their worth during Hell Week by participating in various physical, psychological and even juvenile pranks. But those shenanigans aren’t so funny when pledges start disappearing. What kind of evil has stalked this small Michigan university for the past two decades? Theories range from obscene scientific experiments to grotesque satanic killings…but they’re all wrong. The murdered boys serve a single purpose…the ultimate revenge.
Rachel Davis, forensic computer analyst for the private investigation agency CORE, has been itching to leave her desk behind and work in the field. When her brother Sean, a student at Wexman, is found beaten and his roommate kidnapped during Hell Week, she gets her chance. Only her boss insists former U.S. Secret Service Agent, Owen Malcolm, helps her with the investigation. Owen is the last person she wants on this assignment. She’d been secretly half in love with him for over four years, until the night he’d crushed her ego and destroyed her hopes for any kind of future with him.
For his own reasons, Owen refuses to risk becoming involved with a coworker. Now that he and Rachel are stuck working side-by-side to solve this perverse investigation, he’s having a hard time fighting his attraction to her…an attraction he’s tried to deny from the moment they met. But time is ticking. They have seven days to find the missing pledge and catch a killer. Seven days before the body count rises and the pledge ends up another victim of Hell Week.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Image of Kristine MasonI didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good had come from writing it. I realized my passion, and had found a career that I love.
When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.
Going Thru Hell by T.J. Loveless
Publication date: October 1st 2013
Genres: Fantasy, Mythology, New Adult
SYNOPSIS
KYLIE RIPPONS is a SpongeBob pajama bottom wearing, Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 driving, USDA certified klutz, coffee-addicted mortal, seeking a normal life despite the constant harassment of gods and the ability to braid time.
Kylie sees actions and consequences as bright, shining timelines in her head. Born with the power to gather the strings and braid them into a new chain of events, she is the weapon of choice for many pantheons in their never ending wars. But using the ability requires fuel, and for a mortal, it means a piece of her soul.
One Mesopotamian goddess, the only forsaken Valkyrie, and a rogue, immortal, Berserker ally with Kylie. Constant harassment forces the group to take drastic action, and go on the offensive. She must braid time to save friends, and herself, as the gods drive them into situations in which she must choose: braid time, save her friends, and lose pieces of her mortal soul, or become slave to the pantheon of her choice.
Deception by an old friend sends Kylie fleeing to her parents’ home, where she hid her son, Riot. She’s too late, the gods found Riot and hold him hostage. Searching for him, Kylie experiences the most devastating betrayal of all.
Kylie faces her worst nightmare: kill a friend and permanently hide Riot, leaving him motherless, or become a slave in exchange for his safety, leaving her soulless and insane.
If only the gods allowed for personal choice.
GUEST POST
When I saw this guest post as one of the option to choose for this tour, I jumped all over it. T J Loveless had me laughing out loud as I read it. Other than the klutzy part, I could totally relate to her. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
Where I Fit In
When I began writing Going Thru Hell, I had a little bit of a conundrum. One, I am far from girlie. Oh, granted, I do love a great pair of boots. But put more than a cowboy heel on it and I’ll break a leg. Dresses and I don’t get along. I have make-up, I’m just not sure where. My hair has two styles: Long and in a ponytail, or short and pulled back with a headband. I quit coloring it and let the gray stand out loud and proud. Okay, okay, more like lazy and why bother.
Two, writing about a woman who loves all those things proved to be impossible. I couldn’t relate in any way. My idea of dressing up is a pair of slacks, a long blouse two sizes too big, and sandals that might, or might not, match. I’ve been known to wear shoes of two different shades of brown. I don’t pay enough attention.
Kylie steamrolled her way into my head, pacing, impatient, full of ideas. She wanted at least one fancy outfit, and I spent three days researching Barney’s of New York, and calling all my fashionista girlfriends for advice. But for the most part, I based a good bit of Kylie on my own personality.
I love pajamas and fuzzy slippers. Fun cartoon pajama bottoms make me feel good. I can actually coordinate jeans and t-shirts with one of five pairs of Sketchers.
And after reading tons of books with sophisticated femme fatales, I wanted to do something different. So I created Kylie to be as klutzy as me. The fall out of bed in the morning? Yep, I do it at least once a week. I did once cause severe rugburn on my face after one particular fall and slide on new carpet. I also gave her my addiction to caffeine. Mmm … coffee. Especially a large mocha latte, with an extra espresso shot and a few pumps of raspberry flavoring from The Paramount Café downtown.
I prefer trucks to cars, they seem to last longer. A bit of a confession: I’m on vehicle number fifty-eight. You read that right. I’ve put more vehicles in the ground than I like to admit. Trucks/SUVs seem to last at least a little longer.
Neither Kylie, nor I, have a brain-mouth filter. Often when I speak, whatever is in my head just voices itself.
But there is where it ends. I’m a people person, an extrovert. I laugh often, and don’t brood. I don’t back away from a fight.
I think, as authors, we all interject a bit of ourselves into certain characters. Sometimes the bad guy, most often the good guy. It’s fun, and helps keep us connected to our own imaginations. Not to mention, if you already know the character, it makes it easier to write.
Besides, it’s fun to make family and friends call me up and go, “I remember the time you did that!”
Thank you T J for sharing.
Wild Times on Skidaway Island by Karen Dove Barr
 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg
Wild Times on Skidaway Island, Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest, details life in a unique Audubon-designated, ecologically friendly refuge. There, golfers pitch balls around endangered great blue herons, mama raccoons march their babies across backyard decks where once Guale Indians trapped ancestors of the same raccoons, and residents dodge alligators and rescue snakes.
Even the vegetation is wild. Three hundred-year-old oaks dripping Spanish moss and poison ivy surmount an under-story of wax myrtle and holly. Carolina jasmine, Cherokee roses, and endangered orchids grow wild in the rain forest. The book examines choices residents make when stared down by a bald eagle, when a red-tailed hawk mistakes a golf ball for bird food, when wakened at midnight by deer munching hibiscus. Wild Times on Skidaway Island educates about the species that residents must adapt to on this historic island.
The Tempest Murders
by p.m. Terrell
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 BLURB

 A provocative story of a love that spans centuries, of soul mates found, lost and reunited… and the lengths to which one man will go to change their destiny.

Irish Detective Ryan O’Clery is working a series of homicides in America when he discovers a journal written by an uncle, Constable Rian Kelly, five generations earlier. The journal detailed the same type of murders as the worst storm in Ireland’s history slammed into the island in 1839.

As Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coastline, Ryan discovers even the killer’s description matches his cases exactly. And as he falls in love with television reporter Cathleen Reilly, he begins to wonder if she is the reincarnation of Caitlin O’Conor, Rian Kelly’s lover—the woman who was lost to the killer as the storm raged in Ireland—and if he is the reincarnation of Constable Rian Kelly.

Now he’s in a race to rescue Cathleen before the killer finds her—or is history destined to repeat itself?

GUEST POST

 p m terrell shares her thoughts. Thank you p for being here and lettting my readers and followers learn a little about you, the author.

WHEN A BOOK DEMANDS TO BE WRITTEN

 There are times when thinking of the next scene—or the next sentence—is like pulling teeth. Then there are other times, like The Tempest Murders, when a book demands to be written and the pull is so great that it can’t be ignored.

I first became interested in Ireland when I was researching my family’s genealogy with my father. Mary Neely’s family had come from Ulster in the 1700’s and when Mary was just 19 years old, she traveled to Fort Nashborough with 300 other settlers through hostile Chickamauga Indian Territory. Just four months after she arrived, she was captured by Shawnee warriors and held as a slave for three long years. She was resilient, courageous and determined to escape, which she eventually did, traveling on foot over hundreds of miles to be reunited with the remnants of her family.

Her story made me wonder why some people will give up everything they have ever known to travel to a country they’d never seen before, to customs totally foreign to them, and to a language so unlike their own. My ancestors the Neelys did not migrate due to a potato famine but they had been successful businessmen in Ulster. They heard that America’s streets were “paved with gold” and off they went to make their fortune.

Things didn’t turn out as they’d planned and while Mary was in Shawnee captivity her mother and brother were killed. Her father had been killed and scalped when Mary was captured. When the two books I wrote about her plight, Songbirds are Free and River Passage, were released I heard from a number of Neely descendents all around the world—including some cousins who had never left Ireland for America.

VBT_The_Tempest_Murders_Book_Cover_Banner_copyAs I delved into their destinies and how they differed from their American cousins, I was almost instantly surrounded by the myths and legends of Ireland. One legend that grabbed my attention and refused to let it go was the tale of The Night of the Big Wind. It occurred on the Day of Epiphany in 1839, a day when some Irish believed the end of the world would come. It began as a beautiful day but by mid-afternoon the skies had grown completely black. A storm had developed over the Atlantic and in the days before weather forecasting and mass communication was available, the storm hit the island by surprise with winds so fierce it swept the Atlantic Ocean all the way across to the Irish Sea. Hundreds drowned and thousands lost their homes, their businesses, their crops and animals, and their way of life.

It was that storm that formed the backdrop for The Tempest Murders. The book begins on January 6, 1839 and as it slips back and forth between Rian Kelly and the lover he lost to a killer at the height of the storm, it also follows an Irish immigrant, Ryan O’Clery, and a serial murder case he is investigating as Hurricane Irene barrels toward the North Carolina coast.

I live just over a hundred miles from the coast in the town portrayed in The Tempest Murders—Lumberton, North Carolina. At one point, one of the models showed the hurricane hitting landfall and moving straight over our heads. I was by myself at the time and I vividly remember not only the hurricane but the tornadoes it spawned, the roar of the “freight train” which was really the fierce winds overhead, and huddling in the closet with my three dogs. The extreme weather Ryan O’Clery faces when he is trying to reach his lover, Cathleen, to prevent her from becoming the killer’s next victim is based on real conditions that I have encountered over the years, as I’ve been caught in a hurricane’s or tornado’s path.

Writing about Ireland and about an Irish immigrant has only deepened my love affair with the Emerald Isle, and I am looking forward to writing more about this magical place.

EXCERPT

 “I know you too well,” Claire said. “You’re wanting the story of Caitlín O’Conor, aren’t you?”

“Who?”

She smiled. “Her name was Caitlín O’Conor. She was supposedly the great love of Ríán Kelly’s life. It was a star-crossed love story. Her father was a prominent man in the village and Ríán was a ‘lowly county inspector’ and though they were deeply in love, her father would not permit Ríán to ask for her hand in marriage.”

He felt his chest tighten and he sipped his coffee to avoid Claire’s piercing eyes.

“The tale is that they sneaked around for years; everybody knew it. Everybody except Caitlín’s father, that is. They were madly in love.” She sighed wistfully.

“What happened?” He kept his eyes on his coffee. “Did she marry someone else?”

“Her father died. Quite unexpectedly. Heart simply stopped. And without him in the way, they were clear to be married.” She brushed non-existent crumbs from the countertop before continuing. “He asked for her hand in marriage on New Year’s Eve. Let’s see, I believe it was 1838. Yes, that’s right. December 31, 1838.”

“How can you be so certain of the date?”

“Because seven days later, Caitlín was dead.”

His head jerked up and he stared into Claire’s eyes. They were as green as the fields of Ireland and now she cocked her head and eyed him curiously.

“He’d gone to Dublin, so the story goes,” she continued slowly.

“Ríán Kelly.”

“Aye. He’d been called away on business. And as Fate would have it, the great flood came while he was gone and Caitlín was swept away. It was January 6, 1839—Epiphany.” Her voice took on a whispered note as though she was telling a ghost story. “There were those in the faith who had forecast the end of the world would occur on January 6, 1839—the day of Epiphany. So when the air grew completely still, so still they could hear the voices of neighbors miles apart, there were some who thought the end was near.”

He waited for her to continue. His cheeks were growing flush and he could feel beads of sweat beginning to pop out across his brow. “What happened then?”

“By nightfall, there were gale force winds. They moved from the western coast of Ireland all the way to Dublin, where Ríán Kelly had traveled. Some said the winds were accompanied by an eerie moan, a rumbling of sorts. But not thunder; it was a sound never heard before nor since. It increased as the winds grew. And then the northern sky turned a shade of red that had never been seen before.

“Well, so the myth goes, Ríán Kelly left Dublin immediately. It was a miracle he made it back to the village at all. He traveled through the night, in the rain and the hail, with the winds all about him. Bridges had been washed away; the wind had been so strong—stronger than anything Ireland had experienced in more than three hundred years—so strong that it whipped the Atlantic into a fury and pushed it all the way across the island. Streams and creeks became raging rivers. Whole villages were wiped out. Even some of the castles were beyond repair.”

He rested his elbows on the counter and put his head in his hands.

“You’re sure you don’t want to lie down, Re? You look as if you might faint.”

“I’m fine,” he said. “What happened when Ríán Kelly reached his village?”

“It was gone. Oh, there were a few buildings still intact. The church, for one. But Caitlín O’Conor’s home had been washed away. There was no sign of Caitlín.”

“So that’s where the story ends, does it?”

“Oh, no. I suppose it’s where it just begins.”
