ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paul has lived a varied life full of excitement and adventure. Not really, but it sounds good as an opening line.

Paul’s multiple careers have included: rock and roll roadie, children’s theater stage manager, television camera operator, mortgage banker, and support specialist for Microsoft Excel.

This eclectic mix prepared him to go into his true love: motion picture production. He has produced two motion pictures and two documentaries: His film Night Feeders released on DVD in 2007, and Cold Storage was released by Lionsgate in 2010.

Amidst all this, Paul has worked on his writing, starting with his first short story, about Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, at age 8. Paul has written and produced numerous commercial and industrial video scripts in his tenure with his forcreative agency, Indievision. He has two published short stories (As You Sow and Double Cross) and one self-published novel (Godchild). He lives with his filmmaker/graphic artist partner and their three cats.

“Regency” is the era in England when the Prince of Wales was Regent, or the ruler, in place of his father, King George III who was declared legal unfit to rule due to madness. Because George (later George IV) was the Prince Regent, the period is called the Regency. The true usually when I tell people I write Regency, I get one of two reactions. They either say, “I love Regency” or they say “what is Regency?” I guess to know it is to love it.

Here is a basic rundown on titles. The titles of duke and marquess are usually territorial, meaning they are associated with a specific area of land, such as Duke of York, Marquess of Salisbury, etc. Though the titles of earl, viscount, and baron are most often associated with a territory, they can also be based on a family name, eg Earl of Tarrington. Some titles were bestowed without land so the title is attached to the family rather than to the land that family governs, so to speak.

I try to include as many of the five senses as possible, as well as internalization—what that person is thinking and feeling in his/her heart. I walk a fine line between sizzling chemistry and staying on the “sweeter” side of romance.

To accommodate the Regency gentry or nobility, the styles, paint design, and features of carriages were as varied as today’s automobiles. Image, status, and money, as well as personal taste, were all factors in choosing a carriage. Nobility had their family coat of arms painted on the side of their family coach. A reader may come across a number of different names for carriages, and unless one is willing to do some research, these names may mean nothing.

Into this ineffective chaos stepped the Fielding brothers. Henry Fielding was a magistrate who operated his office on Bow Street. In 1750, he and his brother hand picked and organized an elite fighting force of highly trained and disciplined young men known as the Bow Street Runners. Later nick-named the “Robins Redbreasts” for their distinctive red waistcoats, they conducted investigations, including a rudimentary forensics and interrogations. They even carried handcuffs.

I also liked to see that he had high standards and always tried to do the right thing and help others. The early 1800’s in England was a time of social and economic upheaval. Upon the ending of the long-term Napoleonic wars, unemployed career soldiers and sailors flooded the workforce. Industrial change was taking England from a largely agricultural country to one of large industry. Many of the working class were hungry and feeling oppressed. Jack bolted from their tent. “What’s happened?”

“Rosemary’s gone!” Daphne stood just inside her sister’s tent, her hand still lifting the entry flap. “Someone’s taken her!”

Shirtless and barefoot, Maxwell came rushing from his tent on the other side.

“This cannot be! I never heard a word .  .  . I swore I would protect her,” he said, his voice forlorn.

The rear of Rosemary’s tent had been slashed through. Jack whirled around to chastise the soldier he’d asked to guard Rosemary.

The fellow was sitting in the sand directly in front of Rosemary’s tent, his head bent, chin on chest, eyes closed, hugging his musket to him as if it were a cherished woman. He was sound asleep.

Jack mumbled an oath as he began to shake the soldier. He did not readily awaken. Then Jack smelled it. Laudanum. “The guard’s been drugged with laudanum!”

“We need to determine if anyone else is missing,” Maxwell said, his voice commanding.

Jack’s eyes narrowed. “It wouldn’t surprise me to discover that one of our recently hired servants is responsible for Rosemary’s abduction.” His gaze returned to Rosemary’s tent. “Daf, can you see if anything of your sister’s is missing?”

She nodded solemnly.

By now Arbuthnot had made his way to join the others. He was fully dressed except for his coat. “Are you saying Lady Rosemary is missing? Are you sure she’s not just gone exploring? Didn’t she express a strong interest last night in seeing the mestabas?”

Jack faced Arbuthnot and spoke in a growl. “Some vile person slashed through the back of her tent and apparently carried her off.”

Arbuthnot’s eyes narrowed, and he uttered a curse.

Maxwell looked forlorn. “And I promised her I would protect her.”

Jack placed a hand on his shoulder. “Don’t blame yourself. I was just as close to her tent as you were, and I slept right through her abduction.”

“Dear God, I hope she’s not intended for white slavery,” Arbuthnot said.

Daphne poked her head out of the tent and harrumphed. “They’d be sure to bring her back. My sister is not only incompetent about cleaning floors and polishing furniture, but she’s never in her life lifted a hand in pursuit of tidiness.”

Jack coughed, and despite the gravity of the situation, his eyes twinkled with mirth. “It appears my wife is under a misapprehension about the nature of white slavery.”
