GENRE: middle grade/tween

BLURB

Like everyone at Merton Middle School, Karma Cooper’s smartphone is almost another body part. She’s obsessed with her LIKES on Snappypic. When her parents shut down her social media account and take away her smartphone, Karma’s whole world crumbles. She has to figure out what she actually likes and how to live life fully unplugged. This book will jumpstart conversations about how social media is changing the ways tweens are growing up.

GUEST POST

Why I named my main character Karma

Names are powerful. In the Judeo-Christian, we believe that the creator spoke the world into existence. It’s definitely not quite as quick on my end. But certainly there’s great power in a name. In fact, I spent quite a bit of time naming my characters. I wanted to make sure that names fit their personalities. In another words, I want to imbue their names with their essence.

Today, I thought I’d tell you a little bit about naming my main character of my new middle book, Queen of Likes. Before telling you why I named my character I’d like to describe her to you. Twelve year-old Karma Cooper lives in Portland, Oregon. Her parents were originally from San Francisco and discovered the Portland area while on a retreat (so they are former hippies). Karma’s a seventh grade and has achieved a certain status in her middle school because of all the followers she has on her social media account, Snappypic. By the way, this is a fictional social media platform so don’t go looking for it! I wanted to make sure that I kept the book feeling timely. After all, what social media platform is en vogue changes from year to year, month-to-month, sometimes even week-to-week. That’s why I thought it would be best to make up a site.

Karma is someone who in sixth grade was shy and didn’t receive a lot of social attention. However, when she began to post photos online, they generated some attention. She started to get more and more followers, which gave her a sense of belonging and increased her self-esteem. Unfortunately, she began to look outside of herself for validation. She viewed the number of likes she got on Snappypic as a measure of her value as a person.

I chose the name Karma because of two reasons. The first reason is because when my second son was in middle school he was friends with a girl named Karma, and I just thought it was such a memorable name. As a bonus, this girl a dynamic person and an independent thinker. I decided I’d really love to use that name from one of my books one day.

The second reason is that karma in Hinduism and Buddhism means the sum of the person’s actions in this and in previous states of existence and that sum decides your fate. Unfortunately, Karma thinks that all of her posts determine her fate. She’s not looking at the posts themselves but at people’s reactions to her posts. What she needs to learn is to look inside herself for what she likes versus what other people think of her. Her life doesn’t go the way she wants to go. At least at first. Her parents cut off her social media account and take away her phone. However, when she does a service project and volunteers in the local historical society (and takes a photography class), she learns to value herself. She stops looking outside of herself for validation. When this begins to happen, Karma’s life heads in a more positive and fulfilling direction.

EXCERPTS

Where are all my likes? I refresh the page. And . . .

Nothing.

I shake my phone as if that might help.

Still nothing.

This doesn’t make sense. I used the filter that everyone else on Snappypic is really into. It makes everything seem dreamy. But with only 45 LIKES, the sun is losing its brilliance and looks lonely and unloved.

Maybe I need to turn it off and on?

I turn off my phone and restart it. I text Ella Fuentes: Did you see my photo? I add a smiling emoji.

No response.

I know Ella’s up. It’s late morning. She’s my best friend. Maybe she’s reading or drawing, but she’s definitely up.

If she wasn’t doing something else, I’m sure she’d like my photo. I try a couple of other girls I know. Nothing. It’s late Saturday morning and all my followers have to be up by now.

As of 11:07 a.m. today, I have 12,032 followers on Snappypic. My followers are pretty much all the kids at Merton Middle School and a bunch of other middle schools around Portland. But I have two middle schools in Mission Viejo. That’s all the way down in Southern California. I didn’t know where it was until I checked it out in Google Maps. Usually between four hundred and nine hundred followers give me a thumbs-up on anything I post. So yeah, I get more LIKES than anyone I know at school.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself that this is happening to me.

Movie Marathon – Jesse Stone, Tom Selleck & Robert B Parker

Here I am, doing my normal when Mr Wonderful has to work on a Saturday, blogging, reading and watching TV. What’s this? OMG, its a Jesse Stone Movie Marathon and I am all in.

Magnumtomselleck.jpgI am a huge Tom Selleck fan from the Magnum PI days and I just watched Three Men and a Baby for the umpteenth time. He has those boyish good looks that I find hard to resist.

I am also a huge Jesse Stone and Robert B Parker fan. I have read many of his books and I must thank the library for that. I used to go in and clear the shelf of his books, loving bringing them home, stacking them, putting them in order of publication and..Then…the good part. I would begin reading. One after the other. I devoured them, reading for hours on end.

Robert B. Parker at Manchester Library.jpgIt is sad that Robert B Parker is no longer with us, but if Tom Selleck has his way, he will live on.

Notice any similarities?

Jesse Stone Innocents Lost DVD.jpgNOW…a Jesse Stone marathon  and I am loving every minute of it, watching them one right after another.

His drinking and his ex wife haunt him. I like having a beer or a glass of wine, while I am sitting alone, hubby working late, or working one of his freelance gigs. It seems so…special somehow. Not sure if that’s the right word, but I enjoy it.

Mr Wonderful just got home from a gig and he’s sleeping. Jesse is having the first of his two Scotches and I am having a glass of wine and loving every minute of it.

Women are drawn to him. He is a fair man and walks a fine line when it comes to the law. He breaks it when there is no other way, but the bad guys deserve everything they get. He works with some not so good citizens to get a better result and it seems to work out for him and them too. But there is still a line not to be crossed.

KathyBaker.jpgReggie makes me want to reach out and pet him, but I know, like Jesse, he does not want that. His dogs…well they seem to be as damaged as him. BUT Reggie will be there, a comforting and stoic partner.

I love Suitcase and Rose.

Rose, Kathy Baker. I love to watch her character grow and develop. She is such a good person.

Suitcase, Kohl Sudduth, what can I say about Suitcase. A kid in a man’s body, he looks up to Stone and strives to be more like him, but he has a huge sense of right and wrong, black and white. Will he find the gray that seems to me rules life?

I love them all! The trio make a great team.

They reside in a small coastal town, where everyone knows your business, yet he has no time for boredom. Whether it’s helping a lost teenager get back on track, showing a woman mercy because of a past transgression…

Life has unintended consequences and sometimes justice is found in the oddest ways.

I love when I sit down, turn on the TV and come across such a great, unexpected surprise. I spent all day watching – one right after the other – and hated for it to end.

What a fantastic way to spend a cool, wintry day.

What about you? Do you have a special character you love to spend hours with?

A Psycho Serial Killer – A Piece of You by D M Annechino @DMHemingway

I was very excited when I won a signed paperback of A Piece of You by D M Annechino. I love books about psycho serial killers and HE is a doozy. Suspense thrillers are my favorite genre and even the cover tells me this story may hold a piece of my heart. I love jigsaw puzzles and look forward to finding that missing piece.

My thanks go out to D M Annechino and IReadBookTours.

MY REVIEW

A Piece of You by D M Annechino has all the elements I love, from the bloody cover with the missing piece, to the serial killer running AMOK within the pages. I mean…with a line like this:

He opened his duffle bag and removed a hacksaw, a utility knife and a thick towel. He whisered into her ear as if she was still alive. “I’m so sorry Theresa…All I  want is A Piece of You.”

in the opening pages, I am HOOKED.

Sometimes when the justice system lets them down, a vigilante thinks it is up to them to right the wrong. HE is making a horrific statement and feels he has nothing to lose. I feel so bad for HIM, but no matter how I twist it, this cannot end well for him and rightly so.

A Piece of You also tells Sami’s story. Have you ever wondered how big someone’s heart can be? When it comes to Sami, the answer is HUGE! . I could not do what she does and I love her for it.

Sami is a tough and righteous homicide detective that will not be swayed from doing the right thing. For some reason, serial killers have become her specialty.

A Piece of You is the third book in the Sami Rizzo Thriller series, but reading out of order didn’t affect my enjoyment. The blanks are filled in and it only makes me want to go back and read what I missed.

I know the story and writing is fantastic, when it makes me fall in love with the villain, feeling his anguish, but knowing no matter what he does, his actions are futile and the price he will pay is high and I cannot stop reading, wondering how it will end.

I want more of Sami Rizzo’s and D M Annechino’s stories and I want them now.

GOODREADS BLURB

Homicide Detective Sami Rizzo is at it again! She never dreamed “America’s Finest City,” would be tormented by yet another serial killer, but for the third time in the last five years a depraved maniac is stalking the streets of San Diego. Based on her qualifications and prior successes dealing with multiple murders, who else would Captain Davison assign to head the investigation? Different from Sami’s past experiences, this fanatic is like no other. His methods of killing defy everything profilers think they know about serial killers. As an intense investigation begins and bits and pieces of evidence emerge, no one can understand his motivation. He’s merciful, yet brutal. And just to make things even more confusing, all of his victims are blood-related. Is he settling a vendetta? Did he randomly pick a name out of the phone book and begin a rampage? Or is there a deeper story? Based on very little evidence and a lot of gut instincts, Detective Rizzo pieces together a complex puzzle and narrows the field of possible suspects. She learns that the killings may connect in some way to powerful people within the judicial system and doesn’t know who to trust. Ultimately, she comes face to face with the killer for a battle of brain and brawn. Can she outwit the shrewd killer, or will she be his next victim?

Review & Giveaway – The Ebola Game by Glenn Shepard

The Ebola Game

by Glenn Shepard

on Tour April 2016

The Ebola Game by Glenn ShepardMY REVIEW

This is the third book in the Dr Scott James Thriller series. I have not read the first book in the series, but if you are just starting out, I would recommend beginning the series with Book I, The Missile Game.

I have been following Dr Scott James journey through hell and the action never stops in this horrific tale of zombies, terrorists, kidnapping and plague.

I am familiar with the characters and wonder what Glenn Shepard will do to them in The Ebola Game, which starts out with a bang…I mean a huge explosion at the hospital where Dr Scott James works. The bomb brought more than an explosion, it brought the Ebola virus. At the same time, a threat is delivered to Elizabeth at their home.

I found myself confused at times. I would have loved the story to be fleshed out. I think I needed more to fill in some of the blanks and add to the suspense.

I love James and Elizabeth, and especially JakJak. They all go above and beyond the doctor’s oath, putting their lives on the line to save the world. I love the twisted ending that leaves the story wide open for the next book.

I received a copy of The Ebola Game by Glenn Shepard in return for an honest review.

Read an excerpt:

Conference Room
Hospital Administrator’s Offices
9:30 a.m.

Dr. Reed called and said that he wanted to update hospital leaders on his team’s findings and give further instructions. I called the operator and had her contact the Executive Committee, a governing body comprised of the department heads, committee chairmen, and all the assistant hospital administrators quarantined in the hospital. The group assembled within fifteen minutes. The two from the CDC were the only ones in the room in hazmat suits and helmets.

Dr. Reed gave his report: “Ebola virus was definitively diagnosed by electron microscopy.”

Everyone groaned, even though they knew before this report came in that it was Ebola. Then, he gave what he called the “good news.” The vast majority of the patients who had been in the hospital at the time of the explosion, as well as most of the doctors, nurses, and people in maintenance and facilities, were not exposed and could be released from quarantine to return to their homes. I began to applaud and the other members of the executive committee followed.

Reed was resuming his talk when my telephone rang. I looked to see that the caller was the Mayor’s Office. I answered in a quiet voice, “Dr. James.”

It was Mayor LaShaun Washington. “I know you are in a meeting with Dr. Reed and your staff. I’m going to call back in a minute on Skype so I can teleconference with your entire group.”

I paused for a moment to comprehend his demand, and hung up. I opened Skype on my computer. The large screen at the end of conference room went from black to a picture of Mayor Washington and a group of people sitting at a conference table.

The Mayor spoke: “Dr. James, you will recognize everyone in my panel, the Jackson City City Council, and of course the City Attorney, Ms. Marks.

“Dr. James. This conference is called into emergency session. Now, let’s get right to the point: Dr. James, did you receive a message from a terrorist group that mentioned ‘Ebola?’”

“What?”

“Dr. James: Did you, or did you not, receive a message from a known terrorist organization in the last twenty-four hours? The Jackson City Police have the article in their possession. You are a terrorist. You affiliate with terrorists, you’ve been the center of multiple attacks, and why the FBI has allowed you to carry on, purely in the interest of having another informant—”

“I am not a terrorist, sir!”

“Dr. James—you are out of order here. This is an emergency meeting. Let’s get to the second point, of which this body has just been informed: You are immune to Ebola. Is that correct?”

“What?”

Reed stepped forward and said through his mask, “We have not informed Dr. James of that yet. We just got the results. Frankly I’m a little shocked that you know.”

“I assure you Dr. Reed, this body will be involved in every aspect of this ongoing tragedy. Dr. James, we find it all just a little too convenient that the epidemic you have created here in the United States is something that you also just happen to be immune to—”

“I didn’t create anything!” I screamed. “What are you talking about! It’s Omar Farok! He’s doing all this!”

“Dr. James! That’s enough! That is enough! That is enough! Now … The FBI will be taking you into custody shortly. We are cooperating thoroughly in their investigation. This body is going to make sure that the federal authorities do the right thing and indict you for conspiracy. You are directly responsible for a number of terrorist attacks and your connection with certain cults is well known. The City Council has passed a binding resolution that relieves you of your position at The Jackson City Hospital. Permanently. We are also considering civil action against you and your group.”

“Why don’t you just banish me from the city! You’re a dictator, right?”

“Dr. James.”

“Just throw me out of my own home! You are a dictator, right?”

“Dr. James. That’s enough.”

I turned and looked at the scornful stares of my hospital staff. Many of these doctors had been my friends for many years. I had grown up with so many of them. But no one spoke a word in my defense.

Wordless Wednesday #11 is an opportunity to share your photos or photos you love.

What do you see?

This photo was from last weeks Wordless Wednesday.

I have been working on the yard all week and found this pretty at my favorite ‘hardware’ store. It is named after what it looks like – a Red Shrimp plant. Living on the Gulf Coast, how could I not add one of these to my garden collection? I had never seen or heard of it before and I love it.

Giveaway & Review – A Pacific Northwest Mystery @katedyerseeley

Welcome to the release event for Silenced in the Surf by Kate Dyer-Seeley! This is book three in the Pacific Northwest Mystery series and released March 29th, 2016.
To celebrate the release Kate shared some photos from Hood River Oregon, where the book takes place.

SILENCED cover

MY REVIEW

Silenced in the Surf by Kate Dyer Seeley is a fun cozy mystery that will have you boarding on the water and sunbathing on the sand as you watch some hunks strut their stuff. We have plenty of mystery to keep you guessing, with characters you will love and love to hate. So, jump in, the water’s fine.

Meg volunteered for the King of the Hook assignment in Hood River, Oregon. It doesn’t take long for her to get in trouble, alone and struggling with the windsurfing board, she comes across his dead body. It wasn’t quite the shock you would think, seeing she is no stranger to dead bodies.

I can relate to her, trying new things, not that in to style, sort of a blow and go kind of girl. She loves vintage clothes and the only vintage I have is the old ones hanging in my closet from years ago.

I love her gang of Matt, her best boy friend, Jill, her best girl friend, and her Gam, her grandmother. She is a hoot, a new age, paranormal character that worships the sun and sand. How could I, a fellow worshiper, not fall in love with this wild and adventurous woman?

The writing makes this read real, like the trouble print papers are in now that so many people get their news online. Something aspiring journalists need to take to heart. Press credentials…love ’em. I have traveled and gained access to places I never would have done or seen without them.

Silenced in the Surf is a light paranormal cozy mystery that shares some of the real. I have a love of the water and agree that we are the caretakers, so if you bring it in, take it out. I like the subtle talk of safety and keeping the beaches clean.

We have plenty of suspects to go around and Kate Dyer Seeled will keep you guessing, It’s him, no it’s her, no it’s him…

There is more than one storyline, so you won’t find all the answers to her questions, but you will find THIS one. I don’t believe my reading suffered because I didn’t start at the beginning, though I will now, and I am looking forward to reading through the entire series.

A wonderful series to add to your summer reading list.

BONUS: Travel tips for visiting Hood River, Oregon.

I received a copy of Silenced in the Surf by Kate Dyer Seeley in return for an honest review.

About the Book:

Covering a windsurfing competition should have been a breeze for reporter Meg Reed, but with a killer in the curl, she’s headed for rough waters…

Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge is the windsurfing capital of the world, and Meg is stoked to cover the King of the Hook event for Portland’s Northwest Extreme magazine.
Before the competition gets under way, Meg has a chance to try some windsurfing on her own. But when the current sweeps her downriver, she spots a body snagged on the rocks. The dead man is Justin Cruise, aka Cruise Control, a celebrity windsurfer and not exactly a nice guy. It’s soon clear his death was no accident, and Cruise had no shortage of enemies. As Meg dives right in to discover who wiped out the windsurfer, she’ll need to keep her balance–or she too may get blown away.
