True Crime – Pretty Evil New England by Sue Coletta #TrueCrime @SueColetta1
.
MY REVIEW
I find True Crime books, like Pretty Evil New England by Sue Coletta, hard to rate. Research is vital, but also, the way the book is written can make it easier or harder. Since the murders took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s, I can see why research materials would be lean. Time, fires, and many other things can contribute to that.
I love to hear the characters speak in their own words, and Sue Coletta gave them voices. I love looking into their minds, even though I know I will never understand them. Bad upbringing, nature/nurture…no excuses…whether they are sociopaths, psychopaths, or just plain evil, playing with their victims, it doesn’t matter. A choice is a choice.
Five women: Jane Toppan, Lydia Sherman, Nellie Webb, Harriet E Nason and Sarah Jane Robinson are five people you would never want to be friends with or related to them. They were responsible for more than one hundred deaths.
Males hunt, females gather, and that is how they choose their victims too.
We get the lowdown on the serial killers with their own words, interviews, court transcripts, newspapers, libraries, historical societies…Sue shared glimpses into these five women’s lives. I love learning where they came from, their childhood, their family, marriages, children, friends…
Even when they confess, there is doubt if they are telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Myself, I doubt it. I think they revel in the attention they receive.
Sue Coletta has included some medical and other related trivia from the times. I love when an author does this. For example, Mercury was a common medical treatment, but when Abraham Lincoln used it and found out for himself how harmful it is, he stopped its use.
Not all questions will be answered, but isn’t that why we read? We want to figure things out for ourselves.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Pretty Evil New England by Sue Coletta.

Even ‘death do us part’ couldn’t halt her march down the aisle…
Cash-strapped Maui wedding planner Pali Moon can’t believe her luck when a prospective bride flashing a five-carat dazzler pops into her shop, “Let’s Get Maui’d,” to request a glitzy beachside wedding. But then Pali learns the lavish wedding must take place on Valentine’s Day—only nine days away. Oh, and one other little hitch—the groom’s been missing at sea for more than a week. But no worries, the bride assures Pali, with or without the groom the wedding will take place. She’s struck a deal with the groom’s best friend to be his proxy, if necessary. Two days before the nuptials, a male corpse floats ashore on a South Maui beach. Looks like the groom’s shown up just in time. But what’s it gonna be—a wedding…or a funeral?

Why did I eagerly pick up this one? It has everything I love in a cozy mystery. A tropical island locale is a location that I love. I even went there once. I had told Mr Wonderful early in our relationship that if I ever got married again (it was the second for both of us), I had to go to Hawaii. Fortunately for us, a friend of his had a paid trip to Hawaii on Waikiki Beach and him and his wife could not go. She was pregnant and the doctor said no. Our lucky day. Now that we have digital cameras, I would love to go back. It used to be photos on a budget, now we can all go click crazy. Added to my TBR on 10.19.12 and got it from Amazon on 10.20.13.

The Rose by P D Alleva @PdallevaAuthor #Dystopian #Thriller
.
All I had to do was look at the awesome cover for The Rose by P D Alleva and know I want to read it. I have high expectations and my fingers crossed that it will be a good dystopian thriller.
MY REVIEW
As soon as I saw the cover for The Rose by P D Alleva, I had to have it. Alien vampires…don’t see a lot of those and I am looking forward to finding out WTH is going on.
Sandy, who is pregnant, and Phil are hiding out in a demolished hotel, watching the American, Russian, and Chinese soldiers kill everyone, men, women and children.
Phil tells Sandy his mission is to find her and bring her to Atlanta. Why is she so special? Or is it her unborn child? No matter, he will lay his life on the line for them.
So far, I am loving where this is going…Alien vampires with evil intent. And the government? No surprise they sell out the little guy is there? What are the ancestor Dracs true intentions, the ones kept hidden from humans and their subordinates?
The Rose is magic and both humans and Dracs have access to it. Indigo is a threat to the Dracs, a human threat they are determined to find and eradicate.
Tesla, a Drac, immediately caught my attention. I think she could be one of the good guys, but we will have to wait and see if I am correct.
Well, that was an action packed adventure that had me quickly flipping the pages, wondering what was going to happen to who.
Alien vampires, werewolves, and other wicked creatures, and the humans who have become involved with them since the war and destruction of Earth. Why are they here? What do they want? Creatures, battles, fights for their lives, caves and pits…It will take another novel to tell the tale and I am very curious to know.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The Rose by P D Alleva.

“Forget what you know about vampires and prepare to get a new bite from the tastefully different rules in The Rose Vol. 1. Bringing a new twist to a well-known genre is usually a riskWebsite, but PD Alleva has found a brilliant way to make it work. The Rose Vol. 1 is a fantastic recommendation for fans of vampire, fast-paced action, heart-racing, and dark-themed novels.” ~ Readers Favorite

Madison Knight #10 – What We Bury by Carolyn Arnold @Carolyn_Arnold @HibbertStiles
.
I have been reading Carolyn Arnold’s work for some time now and always eagerly open the book, looking for a good time, some murder and mystery.
MY REVIEW
I have read many books by Carolyn Arnold and I really wanted to love What We Bury, but for some reason my mind kept wandering. Whether it is because of the times (presidential election time in the US), Covid 19, it was an ARC, or it just felt flat, I cannot say. BUT…
When a book starts out with “She’s dead” it definitely gets my attention. And, Madison is on the case. She is a detective with Major Crimes for the Stile Police Department, Her boy toy is Troy. He leads the SWAT team. Her love life takes blow after blow because she can’t stop working long enough to give the relationship the attention it deserves. They have both been burned in their past relationships, but I think it affects Madison more than Troy. I can only imagine how hard it would be to reconcile both their demanding jobs with a home life.
Madison loves chocolate and, at times, she made me think of Brenda Lee on the Closer. She even named her dog Hershey.
She had expected a phone call from her real estate agent, Estelle, but not to tell her she found a body at a home where she was supposed to hold an open house. Guess that’s cancelled.
When Madison sets her mind on something, she is tenacious. She, not only, has a murder to solve, but she is secretly investigating corrupt cops working for the Russian Mafia.
Okay, I think I know what’s going on with Madison and the end result of her secret is so sad. But, that is life and it adds a little bit of realism to the story. Like real life, everything isn’t the way we would sometimes want it to be.
I am getting frustrated with Madison and her insecurities over her relationship with Troy and the doubts she has that he will stick with her. In novels, we come across the issue of communication a lot and it usually involves personal relationships.
I have read many books by Carolyn Arnold and have always been satisfied and nothing has changed in that respect. There is a lot going on and I do enjoy trying to discover the answers to her mysteries myself, but for some reason, What We Bury fell a little flat, though the bad surprise at the end caught me totally off guard and I love when an author can do that. The convoluted identities of the characters made it hard to get a handle on them, but it will become clear once the murder mystery is solved and more of Madison’s side investigation is exposed.
I love Carolyn Arnold’s work. It is more a mystery than a suspense/thriller, which is my favorite, but I do love her step by step process to exposing her villains. I think some of my wandering issues may be remedied when the final product is released, so why not find out for yourself?
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of What We Bury by Carolyn Arnold.

she uses her blood-soaked fingertip to scrawl on the floorboards… The

Doe and two letters written in blood. There’s no murder weapon, and it
seems Doe was attacked somewhere else.

justice for the victim, Madison’s own life is put at risk. What she
comes to discover is some people will go to extreme lengths to protect
their secrets—even as far as murder. But will learning that lesson come

Hello fellow bloggers. Not much new and different. Still doing some yard work, but now it’s normal, not storm, cleanup. The weather has been great, cool morning temps to work in and lots of sunshine to get my Vitamin D. Been cleaning shelves in the guest room, trying to organize….stuff…and figure out what I have to have and what can gooooooo…out the door. Too much stuff! Frickin’ arm is still giving me fits and starts. I no sooner get one arm working and the other arm goes out on me. LOL A physical therapist friend of ours told me it is quite common in older women that the shoulder gives us problems. It’s so weird because I woke up one morning and it sucked. I think part of it is too much time on computers and I am trying to take more breaks and do some of the exercises I have from when I messed up my right arm. Oh well, it is what it is.
How about you? Something good to talk about? Something bugging you?
Hope you have a good week. Stay safe and I’ll be seeing you.

Read an excerpt from ”The Fifth Column” by Charles Salzberg:
I met with the managing editor, Bob Sheldon, and then he handed me over to Jack Sanders, the chief of the metro desk. Both nice guys. Both came from the same mold that gave us Dave Barrett and Bob Doering, my Litchfield bosses. I walked out of there thinking I’d done pretty good. As much as I hated to admit it, I think they were impressed with my having gradu- ated from Yale. “We don’t get many Ivy Leaguers wanting to work here,” the managing editor said. “I’d be happy to be the first,” I replied. And that was true.
That afternoon, it was the Herald Tribune’s turn and I didn’t think went quite as well. I could tell they were looking for someone a little older, a little more experienced. And I was sure my nerves showed, not especially what you want when you’re trying to impress someone and convince them you’re the right man for the job.
That morning, as I was leaving for my interviews, my aunt asked what I’d like for dinner. “I’m sure you could use a home- cooked meal,” she said, then started to probe me for my favor- ite foods.
“No, no, no,” I said. “I’m taking you out for dinner…”
“I appreciate it, Jakey, but you really don’t have to do that.” “Are you kidding? I want to do it. And believe it or not, they actually pay me for what I do at the paper. So, I’ve got money burning a hole in my pocket and what better way to spend it than taking my favorite aunt out to dinner. Just think about where you’d like to go. And do not, under any circumstances, make it one of the local luncheonettes. If I report back to my mom that that’s where I took you, she’d disown me.”
“You choose, Jakey. After all, you’re the guest.”
I got back to my aunt’s around 3:30. She was out, so I decided to catch a quick nap. I was beat, having been up before five that morning, meaning I got maybe three fitful hours of sleep. And even the excitement of being back in the big city didn’t keep my eyelids from drooping. And I had no trouble falling asleep, despite the sound of traffic outside the window.
I was awakened by the sound of Aunt Sonia unlocking the door. I looked at the clock. It was 5:30 p.m. I got up, straightened myself out, and staggered into the living room just as she was headed to the kitchen carrying two large paper bags filled with groceries.
“Remember,” I said, “we’re going out for dinner.”
“Are you sure, Jakey,” she said as I followed close at her heels into the kitchen.
“One-hundred percent sure. Here, let me help you put those things away.” She smiled. “You won’t know where to put them,” she said as she placed both bags down on the kitchen table.
“You think with all the time I spent here as a kid I don’t know where the milk, eggs, bread, flour, and everything else goes? And even if I didn’t, I’m a reporter, remember? I think I can figure it out.”
“I’m sorry, Jakey. I guess I can’t get the little kid out of my mind. I’ll put this bag away, you put away the other.”
“So, what’s new around here, Aunt Sonia?” I asked as I ferried eggs and milk to the icebox.
“New?”
“I mean, it’s not the same old Yorkville, is it?”
“I’m not sure what you mean, Jakey.”
“You do read the papers, don’t you? We’re at war with Germany, Italy, and Japan. This is Yorkville. It’s crawling with German-Americans, right?”
“Oh, that.”
“Yes, that.”
“I really don’t see much of a difference,” she said, stowing away the last of the groceries in the cabinet next to the stove. I got the feeling this was a subject she was not interested in dis- cussing, which made it all the more appealing to me. Maybe that accounts for my going into journalism.
“There’s got to be a little tension, doesn’t there? I mean, wasn’t there that big Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden a few years ago?”
“I don’t really pay much attention to the news, Jakey. Of course, I read everything your mother sends me that you wrote. But the news, well, it’s very upsetting.” She shook her head back and forth slowly.
“That’s putting it mildly,” I said as I pulled out a chair and sat down at the kitchen table.
“Have you decided where we’re going?” Aunt Sonia said. I could see she was still uncomfortable talking about anything having to do with the war. And then it hit me. Her son, my cousin Bobby, who was several years older than me, pushing thirty, in fact, recently enlisted and was now somewhere in Eu- rope. No wonder she was reluctant to talk about it.
“I thought the Heidelberg might be fun. I remember you taking me there as a kid. It was like one big party. I remember someone was at the piano playing these songs I’d never heard before. And this very strange music…”
She smiled. “Oom-pah music. And you were so cute. You got up and started swaying back and forth.”
My face got warm. “I don’t remember anything of the sort,” I said, embarrassed at the thought of doing something so attention-grabbing.
“You can ask your mother if you don’t believe me. But just let me change and freshen up and we’ll get going.”

Read an excerpt from ”Cut Loose All Those Who Drag You Down” by Ross Klavan:
There are people who don’t like to hear that I’ve been married eight times, but for myself, I don’t trust anyone who’s only been married once.
Ex-Doctor Solly had only gone to the altar a single time, but he made up for it by having an obsession with hookers and by sleeping with at least three of his patients, which is a very bad thing to do especially for a shrink, hence the “ex” in ex-doctor. Women either can’t get enough of him or they immediately sense they’re standing beside Satan and they take off. But Ex-Doctor Solly has been married this one time and that was to the last woman that I’d married and why she agreed to that, frankly, to this day, I’ve never figured out.
They’d even had a kid together. She’d never wanted kids, not with me. And Ex-Doctor Solly? To him, having a child sort of balanced out with finding a tumor who wanted toys. Maybe she had the kid to get at me. Maybe she married him to get at me. Maybe it had nothing to do with me. But here’s Ex-Doctor Solly, heaving for breath with his skinny ass in my chair and graced by the holy light of Netflix flashing across his face.
“Jesus, gimme a fucking drink already, what are you waiting for, the Messiah?”
“I only have some…”
“Fine. Wait. Hold on, wait a minute.” What’s left of my Denver edible pops open his saucer eyes; he’s turning it round and round and round. “Where’d you get this?”
“Tanya brought it back for me from…”
“Good, great, OK, easy to get more,” as the rest of the cookie is crushed into his
mouth, mercilessly, fingertips pushing, shoving. It all disappears. “ButIstill- needadrinkgivemeanythingyouhave,” he says.
“I can’t understand you, schmuck, your mouth’s so full that…”
“A DRINK!” like he’s chewing on stinging bees, forcing a swallow. “Dick! What kind of friend are you, don’t you see? This is as bad as it gets.”
I come back with his drink, fit it into his hand, and Ex-Doctor Solly then slumps and slouches and leans forward, and if he could have X-rayed the floor, he would have.
“It’s bad, Dick, really, really bad,” he says. “Not bad like all those bads before. This is, like, bad whether we say so or not.”
“I’m not lending you money.”
“Dick. I’ve killed someone.”
“You’ve…”
“NO! Wait! Did I say ‘killed someone?’ Don’t listen to me, I don’t know what I’m talking about. I’m in a manic state…”
A small plastic box of meds makes rattling sounds in his hand, and he pops two of
something, I don’t know what. Swallows with the scotch, leans back, and blows a breath like he’s doing his own, personal nor’easter. Let me also tell you this: he’s looking worse than lousy. Even worse now that he’s actually stepped into the room. Everything’s settled on him, all of it, settled on him like in his mind he’s sliding awake and open-eyed into the back of an empty hearse—and a cheap one at that.
“It’s not exactly that I killed someone,” Ex-Doctor Solly says. “It’s that I was around someone who was killed. I was with somebody who died. Some people think I’m responsible for this death. Even if I’m not, they’re gonna make me responsible. Do you see what I’m getting at?”
“No,” I say.
“Do you have any more dope?”
In the kitchen, I stare at my one surviving edible lying peacefully in the drawer, and I now hide that away after a weak moment, which means I was toying with the stupid idea of playing “good host.”
I call to Ex-Doctor Solly, “Nothing left, I’ll get you another drink.”
By the time I’m back to the ex-doctor, he’s shivering enough to make the ice in his scotch glass clatter.
“You’re not gonna puke, are you?”
“Probably later,” he says. “I’m mixing scotch with THC and two anti-anxiety medications. OK. I’m all right for…” he looks at his watch, takes his own pulse, nods professionally, and finishes, “…maybe the next three hours and 17 minutes. That’s my educated guess.”
