Exclusive Excerpt:

His expression darkened even more, and invisible lightning snapped across Morgan’s skin. The bathroom was too small for both of them and his magic. Another snap of lightning and her newly manifested gorgon powers exploded over her eyes, rushing out of control across her cheeks.

Shit.

She squeezed her eyes shut and jerked to face the shower stall, away from Gage. Fiery tears threatened to seep from beneath her lashes, and every muscle grew tight with the effort to hold it back. Shit shit shit.

“That was Loric on the phone,” Gage said. His voice sounded so far away and hushed against the rushing in her ears. “We have to report to the Council.”

“Okay.” She sucked in a ragged breath. One of the tears inched closer to release.

“You all right?” He stepped close. The heat from his body and the tingle from his power brushed her senses, and her hold on her powers trembled.

“Fine.” The tear broke through and traced a searing line down her cheek. She caught it in her palm before it hit the floor and exploded into a drop of granite dust.

“Morgan?”

“Just give me—” She forced her shoulders into a roll, trying to loosen the muscles. Logically she knew if she relaxed so would her powers, but the other part of her — probably her human part — screamed with panic. Don’t kill anyone. Again.

“Focus on my voice,” he said, his tone softening. “Draw in a slow breath.”

She inhaled.

“That’s it. Relax, Morgan.” His tone shifted — or was that her imagination changing it? It was now sensual, slick, sexually charged. “Relax, Morgan.”

Desire shuddered through her, and Lachlin’s unwanted fae charm billowed, achy and needy inside her. Her powers flared again. Gage stood so close, too close.

“Morgan.”

Another shudder and burst of power. Two more tears slid from her lashes. She wiped them away. She was going to kill someone or destroy the building they were in, and Gage wasn’t helping. “Please. Just step back.”

“You can control it.” He slid a hand up her back.

Her muscles contracted. Desire and fire roared through her. It forced her eyes open, burst through her sunglasses, and slammed into the shower door. It flash-froze to stone and cracked. She wrenched her glasses off and pressed her palms to her eyes before the door exploded. When her power was this out of control, things tended to erupt into granite dust, not just turn to stone. She’d gotten lucky with the door.

Gage’s fingers tensed on her shoulder, and her powers seared her hands.

“Stop touching me.”

His hand and the sense of him vanished.

“You’re getting stronger.” It sounded like his voice was all the way across the room. “And unstable. Your powers shouldn’t be this unstable.”

FORBIDDEN VALENTINE

EXCERPT

Dani couldn’t catch her breath. Ransom was insatiable, devouring her mouth like a man starved. She curled her arms around his neck, throwing herself into his dark kiss, exhilarated by his need for her, and hers for him.

Of the few boyfriends she’d had, none had affected her like this man—a near stranger. Someone who was, as far as she could tell, damaged. And not an average, run-of-the-mill kind of damage that nearly everyone in the world experienced.

This was soul-deep. His heart hadn’t just broken. It’d been shattered. And it was obvious to her that he was desperately searching for something to numb the pain. Help him forget. He’d chosen booze, and because of her own past demons, she hated it. Which was why, when he’d confessed his affliction, she’d drawn a line, putting an end to his self-abuse.

Her need to help, to fix, was in full-effect. Her ex always said it was her worst quality. Told her on numerous occasions that she was a fool for caring so much. That it would be her downfall.

Maybe she was and maybe it would be, but at least she would know that, in whatever small way, she’d helped.

And even if Ransom didn’t know it yet, he needed her.

But maybe not in the capacity he was currently aiming for.

As much as Dani loved the feel of his mouth on hers, his tongue dipping and diving into every unchecked corner, stoking a fire inside that threatened to blaze out of control, she knew if she allowed this to continue, she’d be taking advantage.

“Ransom.” With regret, she broke the sensational kiss, determined to end this before it went too far, but Ransom only detoured, licking and nibbling a path down the side of her neck that made her shiver.

“You taste so good,” he murmured against her heated skin. “So sweet. And you smell like heaven.”

Obsession, actually. She’d picked up a bottle on clearance following the holidays…What the hell was she going on about? She needed to put an end to this madness before it got out of control. And with the way her body was responding to his every touch and caress, that moment was fast approaching.

Tunneling her fingers through his hair, Dani formed a tight grip, intending to pull him away, only to hold him closer as his warm, wet mouth found the top of her breast. The way he lavished her body with attention, feasting on every inch of her flesh with an almost feral passion, was addictive. Dani had never had a man react to her that way. It was as if he couldn’t get enough. His hands gripped her hard, one around her hip, the other her right butt cheek. His mouth skated across her cleavage, worshiping her as he forged a path toward her hardened nipples. And his body—hard in all the right places—pinned her in place, demanding fealty that she was tempted to give.

Her back hit a wall, rattling a painting, and his knee wedged between her thighs. Heat seared her, clenching her core, and Dani moaned. As his hand left the curve of her ass and slipped around her thigh, her head began to lighten, her thoughts growing foggy.

The only noise between them was that of heavy breathing and the soft lapping of his tongue. When she felt his fingers pass over the top of her thigh and sweep up the center, painting a vivid picture of what he planned to do to her, she clenched her eyes shut and hated herself for what she was about to do.

EXCERPT:

Supernatural Chronicles: The Vampires, by Brenda Pandos, is the third in the collection and it features characters from Brenda’s popular Talisman Series.

Mimi moved closer, tearing at her neck with her nails. Blood came to the surface, teasing me. Nicholas moved closer, but I raised my hand for him to stay back.

“I told you,” she whispered. “Now it’s your turn.”

I licked my canines as they lengthened on their own. “But what’s the thing that brings life and death?”

“It has to be your venom,” she said, but the pungent scent of a lie filtered into the air.

Her chest rose and lowered with her quick breaths, her heart fluttering in a staccato beat. Any other time, the blood might have overpowered me. But her blood was like settling for fast food when a gourmet feast was coming, and I didn’t want to spoil my appetite.

“Where is she?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Probably where evil hides in plain sight.” She lifted her chin. Yet another lie. Did she know where The Noir was? “I’m ready, Julia.”

She closed her dark eyes and pulled aside her long dark locks. On her neck was a necklace made from a black velvet ribbon. She’d thought she’d won—that her lies would satisfy me.

“I’m sorry, Mimi, but I need all my power when I take this relic to her.”

“What?” Her eyes opened, flashing hate. She scratched her nails down my cheek. “You are such a liar!”

I stayed her hand and squeezed. “You’re the one not telling the truth.”

About Brenda Pandos:

BrendaMommy warrior, comma-kazi, wife, computer whisperer, Pinterest addict, chocolate enthusiast, vampire and zombie slayer, merman magnet, and lover of all things pure and right. Well… maybe after a cup of coffee or two.

Author Brenda Pandos lives in California and is surrounded by the loves of her life—her husband, her incredible boys, a grumpy cat, eight chickens and her characters. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as an IT administrator. After her son’s ASD diagnosis, everything changed. Being pregnant and embarking on a 35 hour a week in-home therapy schedule was grueling to say the least. She craved a meaningful escape.

Never having aspired to write before, she wrote her own vampire tale for kicks. Four months later, The Emerald Talisman was born. Unsure who’d want to buy her novel, she entered her fledgling book in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and placed as a Quarter-finalist. That gave her the courage to go Indie and from there, she traversed into a life she’d never imagined and loves to this day. And since a small group of fans grew into a larger group of fans, all cheering her onto books two, three, four, five… and so on, she hasn’t looked back.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt One:
The wind was ripping through the dandelion fields. The fence that stood alone shook but the blue flowers hanging off it stayed still. A pale girl walked on the dirt road through the fog and mud puddles towards the fence, her long brown hair slapping against her face, covering her green eyes that seemed blue when she turned them to the sky. She pushed her thin body through the wind, the black Rolling Stones t-shirt she wore as a dress blowing into her stomach. When she stood in front of the fence, the flowers finally swayed. Sprinkles of dew dying. Then she pulled them off, the crushed flowers in her hands, falling to earth. The wind never took them.
She sat on top of the fence watching the sky for rain. Instead she saw the faces that the clouds made morphing from evil to angel in one blink of her eyes. She ran her hands along the old brown wood, digging her fingertips hard in, crusted blood under her fingernails. She kicked her legs against the fence half wanting to knock it over and half wanting to fall with it, but it wouldn’t fall. She rubbed her thighs with the splinters until they burned and then made a fist with her right hand and bit down on it. She bit hard enough to stop her own tears. Only cry when the rain comes, she thought. That way the rain would wash away her tears and no one would know. She saw a caterpillar sitting beside her and picked it up.
“No one knows youʼre here but me,” she whispered. She laid the caterpillar where she found it. She opened her hands and kept waiting to catch the rain. She waited as the sky twisted around her, sealing her in a mist she wished only the sky could see through.
Release Day Launch – Review for BLOOD ON THE BAYOU
Blood on the Bayou - RDL banner
We are so excited to bring you the Release Day Launch for BLOOD ON THE BAYOU by Heather Graham! BLOOD ON THE BAYOU is A Cafferty & Quinn Series Novella brought to you by 1001 Dark Nights. Grab your copy of this sexy novella today!
Blood on the Bayou - coverAmazon eBook ** Amazon Paperback
MY REVIEW
Just the name, Blood on the Bayou, makes me want to read this, but I am also a huge fan of Heather Graham. No way could I resist a trip to New Orleans. I am very familiar with the place. I have walked the streets, ate in the restaurants, listened to the music and drank the drinks.
The mix of cultures and myths and legends that surround the Bayou are full of superstition and monsters and a great location to dump some bodies. Critters and the elements will make quick work of any evidence left behind.
This novella builds in suspense and mystery as the body count grows. The creep factor rises. I race through the pages trying to figure it out. We have plenty of suspects to choose from, and the winner is…
I received a copy of Blood on the Bayou by Heather Graham in return for an honest review.
EXCERPT
Michael Quinn heard the hysterical crying the minute he entered the police station. The young woman creating the commotion was inside Detective Jake Larue’s office. Someone else was trying to soothe her while not becoming hysterical herself.
“This one is right up your alley,” Larue told him as he approached.
“My alley?”
“That young woman is certain she saw a rougarou. She was on a bayou tour in Honey Swamp last night.”
He smiled. No kid grew up in Southern Louisiana without hearing about the rougarou. Every region of the world had their own particular brand of monster. The rougarou belonged to the Cajun region of Southern Louisiana, stretching right into the city.
“Honey Swamp?” he asked. “Doesn’t a problem in that area go to the Pearl River police?”
“Yep,” Larue said. “But she’s here because she believes the rougarou followed her home, showing up in the window of her hotel last night.”
He arched a brow at the ridiculousness of the statement. “I’m assuming there’s more.”
“A dead man in the swamp. Head bashed in, throat ripped.”
Which grabbed his attention.
“I want you to talk to them,” Larue said. “I told them that you’re a rougarou expert and that you’ll get to the bottom of things. They were out on some night ghost tour in the bayou and their boat came upon the dead man. Right now, she’s so hysterical that she’s not making sense. But you rougarouexperts are used to dealing with that.”
He shook his head at Larue’s sarcasm. He was no more a rougarou expert than someone was a ghost expert. Once upon a time, he’d worked with Larue as partners in the NYPD. Before that, Quinn’s life had been anything but normal. He’d actually been a pretty horrible person, not as in deadly or criminal, but as in vain and egotistical. His prowess in sports had led to excess, which eventually led to him being declared legally dead.
Which changed everything.
About BLOOD ON THE BAYOU: A Cafferty & Quinn Novella
From New York Times bestseller Heather Graham…
It’s winter and a chill has settled over New Orleans, binding a stream of blood that leads a tourist to a dead man, face down in the bayou.
The man has been done in by a vicious beating, so violent that his skull has been crashed in.
It’s barely a day before a second victim is found . . . once again so badly thrashed that the water runs red. The city becomes riddled with fear.
An old family friend comes to Danni Cafferty, telling her that he’s terrified, he’s certain that he’s received a message from the Blood Bayou killer–It’s your turn to pay, blood on the bayou.
The two quickly become involved, and–as they all begin to realize that a gruesome local history is being repeated–they find themselves in a fight to save not just a friend, but, perhaps, their very own lives.
EXCERPT:
Prologue
I STUFFED THE SLEEPING BAG down into my backpack with angry, punching motions, sick and tired of having to be here and having to do the same thing over and over again. I hated camping, I hated being organized, and more than anything, I hated what this exercise stood for.
“Don’t do it like that. I told you – you have to conserve the room as best you can. You have to travel as efficiently as possible. Take it out and start over.”
“I don’t see what difference it makes.”
“Trust me, it’s going to be a really big deal to you in the not so distant future.” His voice sounded hollow.
“Says who?” I was being ornery. I knew the answer to the question already.
“Says me, Bryn. And the news. Look around, would you?” He sounded like he was pleading now. “Stop defaulting back to the rebellious young teen act, and get serious. We don’t have enough time to play those games anymore.”
“They’re not games, Dad. I am a teenager. I don’t care what the news jerks and the government say.” I threw my backpack down on the ground. “And it’s not rebellious to not want to play friggin’ survivor in the backyard every day.”
My dad looked at me with a sad expression and sighed, reaching over to pull me into a tight hug. He dropped his nose to my head and inhaled deeply.
My face was pressed up against his shirt, and I could smell his sweat mixed with the sweet scent of his aftershave. My dad always said he was the last of a dying breed, using that stuff. He couldn’t have been more right.
“Maybe it’s not going to happen here … to us.” I said it just to hear the words, but I knew it was only wishful thinking.
I could tell he was getting choked up again when he started talking, his voice now hoarse.
“I wish, more than anything else in this world, that you didn’t have to be standing here with me in this backyard playing survivor.” His whole body started to shake with silent sobs. “Oh, God, Bryn. If I could do anything to change this, anything at all, I would. I swear to God I would. But it’s happening. No one can stop it.”
I put my arms around his waist, letting go of my earlier stubborn anger, now choking back my own tears. “I know, Dad. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.”
“Yes, you did,” he said, sniffing hard and clearing his throat, shifting to hold me at arm’s length. He was staring at me while he smiled through his tears, giving me that look. The one that always made me confess.
“Okay, so maybe I did mean it. But I’ll shut up about it for a little while.”
“Not for too long, though. You wouldn’t be my daughter if you weren’t complaining about something.”
I tried to slap him playfully but he moved too fast for me. My dad is light on his feet, an expert level-one practitioner of krav maga – a certified badass. He’d only recently taken up camping.
“Pick it up,” he ordered, now back in control of his emotions. “Do it again. Only this time, get the air out of that bag first, condense it down …”
I cut him off. “I know, I know … ‘down into the smallest footprint possible.’ Geez, Dad, I’m not an idiot.”
I shook the sleeping bag out and started rolling it up quickly, using the moves I’d been practicing for four months straight to squeeze it down into a lump the size of a small loaf of bread. I folded the whole thing in half, pushed it to the bottom of the backpack, and then let it unfold itself one time, before putting the other items in on top of it: unbreakable water bottle, half-liter of bleach, square of plastic, cup, hunting knife, and various other tools my father was quite certain I would need … once all the adults in the world had died off, leaving us kids alone to fend for ourselves.
An Award Winning  Suspense set in the Pacific Northwest.
Vancouver Blues Suspense Series, Book 1
When the going gets tough… the tough go sailing
“Silence filled the room for a minute, companionable silence; the kind married couples live in. Each lost in their own thoughts and yet together. Married… couples? Did she really just think that?  Her shoulders relaxed. Being with Hunter felt like sliding into a warm bath, but then he’d look at her and the water would boil.
“The wind’s good,” he said walking over to the window.
That was his way of saying it was time to go sailing. “Uh, Hunter, I don’t think so.”
“I’m guessing Peterson isn’t letting you look at Edgar’s things. He’ll want to go through them with a certified, Mountie, magnifying glass. You’re obviously not doing your day jobs today, so let’s go sailing.” He turned towards her and raised his hands like a lawyer about to rest his case. “It’s the best way, I know of, to clear your head. Get the big picture.”
“You’re crazy.” Three murders, creepy psychic feelings, and a bad guy on the loose. She couldn’t sail off and play on the ocean. Could she?
“Not so much,” he said. He gave her one of those killer looks that made her mind stop working.”
Jo-Ann Carson has lived most of her life on islands off the west coast of Canada, surrounded by snow covered mountains, lush rain forests and pristine beaches.
Growing up, she dreamed of traveling the world like James Bond, searching for relics like Indiana Jones, and finding true love, so it’s no surprise that in her Mata Hari Series she combines elements of adventure, danger and steamy romance.
In her Vancouver Blues Series she slides into the realm of Urban Noir and explores the dark side of the city. These  books are mainstream suspense with strong romantic elements and are very-Vancouver.
GENRE: Sci-fi (soft)
BLURB
After 27 years as a newspaper man, Peter Anderson’s career is slipping away, at least it was, until he stumbled upon the story of a lifetime. Sent to do a fluff piece about lights in the night sky over Arizona, he discovers far more than he ever expected when he comes upon a mysterious young woman held prisoner in a basement. After helping her to escape, she disappears before he can learn the truth about who she is or where she came from. His search for her leads him back to the lights in the sky and leaves him with more questions than answers. The only thing he knows for certain . . . the only thing he can count on are the two words offered repeatedly by his friend and guide . . . “IS BELT.”
EXCERPT
Bob now stood next to her, ready for a signal to charge.
“She’s not what you think, mate. She’s not human. Believe me, on my mother’s grave, she’s a monster,” Carl said, his right hand clutching his fresh wound, his left outstretched, as if holding them at bay.
“I’m as human as anyone here,” she shouted defensively, looking from side to side between Bob and Fred. She bounced from foot to foot, shifting her weight and then lunged at Carl again.
Everyone screamed.
The two became a tangle of legs and arms until Carl wrapped his enormous hand around her neck.
I had to do something and almost without thinking, my hand found a cold piece of metal as I rummaged about the shelves for a weapon.
The piece of metal turned out to be a pipe wrench. I grabbed it with both hands and swung it as if all our lives depended on it. It made a loud, metallic crack as it encountered the back of Carl’s head and he fell to the floor like a sack of potatoes.
Bob stood over him, eyeing him closely before looking to me. He snapped his fingers twice and pointed to Fred without a word.
It took me a moment to understand his meaning but the blood flowing from the back of Carl’s head brought me to full understanding.
I pushed my hand into my pocket, retrieving a fifty handing it over to Fred.
He beamed in return, kissing the bill before shoving it into his pocket.
ABOUT TEGON MAUS
MediaKit_AuthorPhoto_BOBI was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends I could conjure. Not that I wasn’t friendly, I just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe I lived in my head way more than I should have, maybe not. I liked machines more than people, at least I did until I met my wife.
The first thing I can remember writing was for her. For the life of me I can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married me shortly after that. I spent a good number of years after inventing games and prototypes for a variety of ideas before I got back to writing.
It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. My wife and I had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.
I was thrilled. If there is one thing I enjoy it’s making people believe me and I like to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mine you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not. When I write, I always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, I guarantee you, nothing, makes me happier.
Giveaway & Review – White Light by Anna Simpson
Anna Simpson’s wonderful cover for White Light has so much going on, I have to tear my eyes away to get to the story.
At first glance it’s all nice and cozy, but it doesn’t stay that way.
28245754c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblackPublisher: Three Worlds Press
Genre: Cozy
MY REVIEW
White Light by Anna Simpson is a fun cozy with unique and quirky characters that kept me laughing at their antics as the mystery grows.
In the small town of Ravenglass Lake, Mrs Perkins and Emma live alone and look out for each other. They make a great pair.
The scene in the beginning of the book, when Emma suspects wrong doing and finds Mrs Perkins tied up makes me think of a Castle episode. For those of you who have never seen it, Castle is a TV show that features murder mysteries. I can picture this feisty lady bound hand and foot and it makes me smile and want to smack her up side the head at the same time. To find out why you will need to read White Light for yourself.
I love writing that can pull emotions from me and White Light does that.
Emma had spent lots of time in mental hospitals thinking she was insane. Did she have mutiple personality disorder or is there a supernatural  reason? She had always been alone, no friends. She was inexperienced when it came to socializing and men. She’s feisty, curious and a friend you want to have your back.
Emma writes about murder mysteries, so it’s no surprise that she becomes involved in one. This was the answer to her prayers. A mission, a reason to be, something to strive for. I love the way she and Mrs Perkins bob and weave their way through the mayhem.
Murder…attempted murder…money…
The mysteries grow larger and more frequent. We have plenty of suspects, colorful characters and the beginnings of a romance.
The writing kept me caught between the serious and the comical and I enjoyed being there. Anna Simpson’s ability to bring the words to life through her descriptive writing could make me feel as if I was there, sharing some of Emma’s experiences, feeling what she felt. I had my thoughts of who did what, but Anna did not let me know the answers too soon. Great job keeping me waffling back and forth.
There were a couple of places where I didn’t like Emma’s reactions to events and it didn’t read right for me. I received an ARC and the story may change before its release, so don’t hold me to this. Anna Simpson is an author I will keep my eye on.
I received an ARC of White Light by Anna Simpson in return for an honest review.
Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos 3 Stars
SYNOPSIS
Emma never dreamed of being a super-sleuth. In her mind, she’s more Scooby Doo than Nancy Drew and when her nosy neighbor, Mrs. Perkins, drags her to an anniversary party to solve a mystery, she rolls her eyes, buys a box of chocolates and hops in the car.
What’s a party without an attack on its host—or more accurately on the host’s grandson, sparking an allergic reaction and moving the party to the hospital waiting room. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect. Emma and Mrs. Perkins, along with Great Aunt Alice (a spirit with boundary issues who keeps stepping into Emma’s body like a new dress and playing matchmaker), dive into an investigation that almost gets Emma killed along with the man they are trying to protect. With so many reasons to kill him and so much to be gained if he died, Emma and Mrs. Perkins must unravel the tenuous ties that point to every member of his family as potential killers.
Even if it means going back to the psych ward, Emma will protect her friend and this innocent man. What good is freedom if it’s haunted with guilt?
Enjoy this peek inside!
To stay free, I perform a ritual every morning. It begins with stepping outside, where dawn streams through the leafy branches of my maple tree, landing, shifting, and dancing on the flowerbeds at my bare feet. A steaming cup of coffee warms my hands. The fragrant air fills my lungs. I sip, leaving the liquid on my tongue to capture a moment of rich goodness.
My name is Emma, and I need to stay grounded and calm. It’s important for my health, so I walk along the fence and let the cool blades of grass tickle my toes and dewdrops cling to my skin. For fun, I kick a ball of dandelion fluff. Little parachutes take flight catching the same breeze moving the leaves above my head. The seeds float up, and up, over the fence to land on Mrs. Perkins’ perfectly tended lawn. Not a dandelion or mat of moss to be seen.
In a half acre of green sits one flowerbed, brimming with Lily of the Valley. I remember the first time I saw them over fifteen years ago. The delicate white bells could only be fairy hats. Today, the round base of cemented river stone is still full of waxy green spear tips. I don’t see fairy hats anymore. No, now I enjoy the effects of nature—its simple perfection.
Mrs. Perkins does it best. In fact, everything around Mrs. Perkins is perfectly cared for—her home, her yard, her car—all perfect.
But not today. A dark line sits between the jamb and the edge of the door.
A few inches of shadow drives my calm away and prickles the long blonde hairs at the nape of my neck. Butterflies in my stomach tell, no scratch that, demand I find my phone and go next door.
Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not a snoop.
Mrs. Perkins, a wiry old bird, did everything herself. I’m not sure if it is because she’s the independent sort or if she has no one else to help her. Either way, when she suggested we watch out for one another, I agreed.
I’m also alone. It doesn’t bother me unless I catch the flu or something. Then I wonder if I will die and no one will notice. It’s a thought, or fear, I can’t shake. Mrs. Perkins’ house has my full attention, and within it sits the same worry. I’ll check on her because she would do the same for me.
I crash into my kitchen, slopping my coffee onto the counter as I slam the mug down. My phone could be anywhere. My gaze travels from the pine tabletop to the gray marble counter. It’s not here. I push through the swinging door to the living area, run my fingertips between the couch and chair cushions, scan the smoked-glass coffee table through my veil of long blonde hair, and sneak a peek under my overturned book on the throw rug. Desperate, I check around the bowl by the door where I toss my keys as I pass the spiral staircase to the loft. Still nothing.
Down the short hallway, I rush to my bedroom. I tug the midnight blue duvet off the bed and shake it. My pulse speeds up as something thuds on to the carpet. I pick up my smartphone and check the battery. Half power.
Excellent. I dash through my front door, across the lawn and unlatch Mrs. Perkins’ white picket gate. Her shiny yellow front door looks as solid as stone. I follow her path to the back wondering if danger lurks.
I gasp as I near the door. It’s like living a moment in a crime drama. I mimic what I have watched on television and bring up my phone to take a picture. Inching forward, heart pounding, I wonder if poor Mrs. Perkins is sprawled out on the bathroom floor, from a stroke, heart attack, or a butcher knife.
Don’t worry, Mrs. Perkins. I’m coming.
I pull my cotton sleeve over my hand and push the door wider. Her kitchen looks untouched as if it’s sterilized or newly installed. Tiles cool my bare feet with each step. Fear scratches at my nerves, “Mrs. Perkins? It’s Emma from next door. Are you okay?”
Silence.
I raise the phone to call for help.
A small sound carries from deeper in the house. I should stop, leave, and make the call.
Following the sound might be dangerous or, worse, plain stupid. And I’m scared. So scared, my breathing is all I hear over the pounding of my heart.
I’d look stupid if I’m wrong. Ravenglass Lake is so small-townsville, and Benny the bully is like no cop I’ve ever met. He would be no help. Worst of all, they’d call me crazy for sure. I slip the phone back into my denim pocket, quietly open her knife drawer, and pull out a meat cleaver. Armed, I creep forward.
Thank goodness Mrs. Perkins likes an open airy room. Evil housebreakers have nowhere to hide in the dining room.
A small thump like a cat landing on carpet makes me jump. But Mrs. Perkins doesn’t have a cat…or carpet—only allergies.
I tighten my grip on the cleaver as I stick my head into the living room. All is quiet and undisturbed. I enter the corridor to the front door. To my right are stairs to the upper floor. Farther ahead is a hall closet and nook where she keeps a desk and a small bookcase. Nothing seems touched.
I glance up at the glittery ceiling, swallow, and pull my phone from my pocket. The sensible thing is to dial 911. I sidestep for the front door, but in my mind’s eye Mrs. Perkins, wiry but frail, shakes her head. Her arm outstretched urging me not to leave.
Thump, I freeze. The noise is right beside me coming from the hall closet.
Without thinking, I open the door and find Mrs. Perkins tied up with duct tape across her lips. Her green eyes, round and unblinking, grow wide, and her usual perfect curls are mussed. I drop the cleaver. It clatters on the floor, and I pull the tape free.
excerpt
Chapter One
[Asher]
They come for me at nighttime.
They gather around in the darkness, cold and empty
and begging me to feel something. I welcome them, the ghosts of
those who’ve died for my freedom. A freedom I thought would
solve everything, or at the very least be better than the Lifer
sentence I’d been destined to live out before the revolution and
the truth of our incarceration.
In my head, Mother is loudest, demanding answers for the
loss of her son. If I can find out exactly what happened to my
brother, Zed, maybe I’ll find peace.
As I sit alone, guarding the rocky outcrop above the field
where the rabbits we brought over the mountains are penned,
a part of me longs for the Pelican and the safety of the world I
knew on board the ship. My world might have sucked, but there
was comfort in the known. Comfort in the certainty of my place
in the order of things.
The splat of the first drops of water on my makeshift shelter
has my fingers tightening on the Q I hold. I’m on my feet before
the shine of drops on the foliage around me registers in my sleepdeprived
brain. It’s nothing but rain. Simple, brilliant rain. A
marvel after a lifetime inside. It’s not the Company attack we’ve
been expecting since we set up camp here on the other side of the
Upheaval Mountains. But understanding doesn’t let me relax. I’d
rather fight—it’s the waiting that has us all on edge.
Single drops become a patter, and the plump rabbits below
move to huddle in the shelter of the overhang on which I perch.
I step out and lift my face to the cloud-filled sky, letting the water
run over my cheeks and down my neck to dampen the ship-issued
singlet I still wear. If Samuai recognizes it as his that his mother
gave me when I thought he was dead, he hasn’t said anything.
Once we would have talked about it because we talked and kissed
every chance we could. Not now. Since he returned, everything
that happened while he was gone has built a mountain between
us too big for young love to overcome.
I open my mouth, and water drops fall on my tongue, fresh
and clean, and missing the faint plastic taint everything had on
the ship. A taste I learned now not integral in the liquid itself,
but rather a product of the recycling method used. Or worse, a
result of whatever it is they did to us to make us immune to the
weapon that still has some of our allies in a Q-induced coma,
fighting for life.
While most of us sleep in simple tents, one of the few intact
buildings at the settlement site is used as a hospital. The setup is
basic, but the equipment is a collection of the best of what we
could remove from the medical bay of the ship, and the green
robes’ own supplies from their former hideout.
Once, it would have moved me to see families sitting in vigil
next to their loved ones. But I have nothing left for them now.
The Company took everything from me when they killed my
brother and mother. All that is left in me is the hope of revenge.
I sense, rather than see, the small shape moving through the
bushes below. A flash of white eyes and a blur of brown. Time
for guard duty. I steady the Q and aim for a rock in front of the
creature. The weapon that once only worked on living things is
now more useful. A press of the button and what was a boulder
now becomes chunks of gravel. Undeterred, the creature slinks
low onto its belly, ribs clear even from this distance. It’s ignoring
the threat of me above, its starving hunter’s instincts focused on
a plump rabbit.
I aim closer, fire again. A rock explodes right in front of the
dog’s nose. A yelp pierces the air. “Get away,” I shout. I don’t
want another death on my conscience.
I breathe again when it disappears into the undergrowth. It
will be back, I’m sure, but hopefully not while I’m here.
There’s movement on the path a few feet below. I straighten
and try to see through the gloom. Something strides over the
crumbling rock with ease, sending no cascade of rocks and gravel
behind. Too big to be another wild dog. Too early to be the changeover
for the next watch. My blood sings. Confrontation at last.
I lift my weapon, prepare to attack. “Don’t move.”
The shape ignores my barked command and continues
toward me. My muscles tighten, ready to spring.
“I thought I’d find you here,” Davyd says, stepping into a
small clearing at the top of the cliff. There’s something intimate
about the way he speaks, as though we have some kind of
connection. Like he knows me.
I exhale, but don’t relax my stance. It shouldn’t be light
enough to see him clearly, but I do. I see the details of lean hips
in training pants and the singlet fitted to every hard muscle and
meet eyes I know are ice gray.
“That’s hardly a brilliant deduction,” I snap. “It’s my watch.
The schedule is posted on the board where anyone can see.”
“But last night wasn’t supposed to be your watch.” His pause
is deliberate. “Or the night before.”
Only he would notice I’ve been volunteering for extra night
shifts protecting the animals we brought from the ship from stray
dogs running around our new settlement. Anything to avoid the
community that feels as much like a cage as the spaceship ever
did. Only the bars are of my guilt and regret and the questions I
can’t bring myself to ask.
“It’s no secret,” I say, trying for casual but unable to hide the
strain in my voice. I hate the way he makes everything I mean to
say come out all wrong.
His mouth kicks up at the corner but he remains silent. The
rain has made his blond hair dark, and if I squint, I can almost
see Samuai, his brother and the boy I thought I’d love forever.
The boy I last saw laughing at dinner a few hours ago with his
green robe friends. The boy I have been avoiding for the weeks
we’ve been here.
I fold my arms. Davyd’s no longer my master. In this new age
of freedom, those who were once superior Fishie and lowly Lifer
are now equals in the war against the Company who tricked us
all.
“What do you want?” I spit the question.
“You.”
My traitorous body heats at the intensity in the single word.
“No chance in hell.”
“But there is a chance? Hell, huh?” He lifts his hands in the
air, his eyes making a sweep of the jagged, barren rock exposed
by the earthquakes that were part of the Upheaval all those years
ago. It’s as though in unspeakable agony the very earth has tried
to push out its insides. “Does this qualify?”
I breathe in. The scent of rain on the rich soil where we keep
the rabbits fills my lungs. It should be heaven to be able to farm
like I always wanted, but the darkness inside me makes enjoying
it impossible. I shake myself free of might-have-beens. It is what
it is. All I can do is move forward, move on. “Go away. I don’t
want to play your games.”
“That’s not what you said back at the ship.” He steps closer,
uncaring that my body tenses. “It might have been weeks ago but
I only need close my eyes and the memory is right there. You and
me … I’m sure you haven’t forgotten the night of the ball?”
“The night of the rebellion when we Lifers gained our rightful
place as free people. People who are no longer forced to serve you
Fishies to pay for our ancestor’s sins.”
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
I do. Damn him, I do. Before the fighting and the fire and the
shock of Samuai’s return from the dead, there was the ball and
the dress and his arms around my waist and his tongue teasing
between my parted lips.
“Admit it,” he says softly. “You’ve been thinking about it.”
My vision blurs. All I can see is the smug smile on his face.
Like always, goading me, trying to make me break. “It meant
nothing.” I don’t recognize the voice that scrapes from my tight,
raw throat. “Nothing.”
“Really?”
“Really. It was an act.” I let my lip curl. “Surely you could
tell.”
His mouth twitches.
Did I hit a nerve? A moment later his mask of assurance is
back. “So you’ve talked about it with my brother? That kiss we
shared, the intimate press of our bodies. Sought out some time
alone to clear the air and get back to how things were before
between you two.”
I swallow. My hands grip the rock behind me. I didn’t realize
I’d backed up, but I revel in the sharp edge; feel the sting of flesh
breaking and press harder. What I really want to do is close the
distance between us and punish him.
“We will talk. Relocating from the spaceship hasn’t left a lot
of time for deep and meaningful conversations.” I don’t intend
to explain anything to him, but the defense slips out and hangs
lamely between us. The same lie I’ve been telling myself.
The truth is, Samuai and I haven’t spoken properly since the
aftermath of the fight outside the Pelican; I’ve done everything I
can to avoid him. If we speak, he’ll know what I’ve become. Or
worse, he’ll think I’m the same.
“But I’ve found you,” says Davyd. “We’re all alone with
plenty of opportunity for talking … or other things.”
He’s laughing at me again. Damn him. Would it be so hard
for him to leave me alone for once with the stories I tell myself
that allow me to keep going?
Anger surges up inside me, claws at my throat, wanting to
get out. It’s not like I want Samuai to choose me over his new
friends. I have nothing for him now. The love that once flowed
through me isn’t so much gone than blasted out. I’m not the girl
he left behind.
“Why do you do this?”
“Come and talk to you?” He frowns. “We’re old friends from
the ship. We have to stick together.”
“We have never been friends.”
“Allies?” He moves even closer, and I arch back hard against
the rock, just to keep him
mountains?”
He ignores my jab. “They do now. We need to fight, and we
need to make plans.”
The urgency in his voice sparks something inside me. A
flicker of drive where for weeks there’s been only emptiness.
“from touching me. “I’m here because you know this isn’t happily
ever after. Nothing is resolved, and we can’t do anything about it
until you admit there’s something wrong.”
“With Samuai?”
A pulse throbs in his jaw. “Forget my brother. He’s too busy
buddying up to the green robes, and he’s forgotten the real
enemy.”
“The Company?”
“Yes. They locked us up, lied to us, experimented on us,
and what have we done in return? Killed a few officers and then
scurried like rats to hide in the mountains.”
“Do rats even hide in Attack the Company?”
He ignores my sneer. “Why not? Those of us from the ship are
impervious to their great weapon. We have strength and speed.
They’ve made us strong. I say we use the way they’ve enhanced
us against them.”
No wonder Davyd is never lonely for female company. I
hate him and yet find it hard not to get caught up in his desire.
His voice, his energy, echoes the need for revenge that keeps me
awake at night. But inside me lingers the voice of reason, too.
“We need to establish a secure base.”
“You mean give them time to organize an attack?”
“Maybe they’re not. We escaped them before. They could be
cutting their losses.”
“Do you really believe that?”
I push past him to stand at the edge of the cliff. From here I
can see the settlement off in the distance, glowing with light in
the darkness. Filled with the green robes who’ve been resisting
the Company for years and with the people the Company were
breeding for battle.
“They’re not going to take the loss of decades of investment
in their little spaceship program well,” I admit eventually.
“They’re going to come for their property. I don’t intend to be
sitting waiting for collection when they do.”
He’s including himself. Back on the ship he was important
as the head Official, Fishie’s, son. Out here he’s just another
specimen with no idea what the Company has done to him.
We’ve all been violated, and we don’t even know how.
“What’s your plan?”
He runs a hand through his wet hair, scattering water drops.
“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. If I go to the council
as a lone voice then they’ll shoot me down; but together we could
present a case for action.”
“Why me?”
“Apart from this special connection we have?”
In a few swift steps my hand is around his throat. “Don’t
push me.”
“Look at you, taking any excuse to touch me. It’s almost
romantic,” he squeaks.
The rain has cleared, and the clouds thin, letting the moon
light up his perfect, mocking face.
My fingers tighten. I’m squeezing, feeling the muscles and
tendons give way to my pressure; his airway begins to cut off. The
anger inside me glories in the way his eyes bulge and his lips part
in a desperate gasp for oxygen.
He doesn’t move to defend himself.
I hold his hateful gaze for one second, two. Now I have all the
power. It spreads hot tendrils through me, giving me strength.
My vision blurs, and spots appear in front of my eyes. I could
shut him up forever.
Squeeze a little tighter.
It would be so easy. All I need to do is …
Nothing. I drop my hand and crumble to my knees, pressing
my forehead to the rocky ground. Shudders wrack my body as I
rock back and forth.
What have I become?
Somewhere above me he sucks in a shaky breath. “Temper,
temper,” he says softly.
My eyes sting, but no tears will fall. “Leave me alone.”
“Until the rage inside you overtakes everything else? Until
you do something you can’t undo?”
“I warned you not to push me.” I grasp hold of that fact. I
did warn him. He drove me to act, goaded me until I didn’t have
a choice.
But did his teasing deserve death?
I block out the voice in my head. But I can’t ignore the one
a few feet away.
“This isn’t grief making you act this way,” he says, kneeling in
front of me. “And you’re not the only one who’s losing control.”
“Don’t make excuses.”
“I’m not.”
His hand brushes the top of my head where my hair has
grown into soft fuzz. It’s been weeks since Lifer regulations of
shaved heads have been left behind. Electricity skitters across
my skin when he touches my forehead, and it dampens the rage
within. As the anger in me cools, I find the strength to lift my
head. “I’m guessing you have a theory?”
His mouth curves. “I would say ‘that’s my girl’ since you
worked it out so fast, but I don’t have a death wish. I suspect you
don’t belong to anyone.”
Against all reason, I smile at the hint of admiration in his
voice. I curl up and wrap my hands around my knees. I let myself
look up at him, relieved when the marks on his neck are already
fading. “There are others?”
“You’re the first who’s actually tried to kill me, but surely
you’ve noticed the fights in food lines? The shoving over shower
use? The extra injuries in the practice fights that go too far?”
Guilt nibbles at the back of my mind. Why didn’t I notice
any of this? “I haven’t been around much.”
“Believe me, it’s only a matter of time before someone from
the ship loses control. Probably a Lifer.”
“Because we’re less sophisticated.”
His eyes don’t quite meet mine. “Because whatever it is
they’ve done, I believe they’ve done it to you more. The hardships
you’ve faced as a group, it’s made you … stronger for lack of a
better word.”
I want to argue but I remember too well how easily I could
have crushed his throat. Only weeks ago when we fought in the
low gravity training rooms on the ship, he could overpower me
without breaking a sweat. “Something’s changed.”
“But I can’t work out what.”
The rain begins to fall again. I close my eyes and let it cool
my skin. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to water falling from the
sky. I’ve been too long in an artificial environment where every
molecule I’ve ingested came from a particular source.
I jump to my feet. “The ship.”
Davyd blinks up at me. “What about it?”
“They had control of our food and water.” I pace around
him as I think aloud. “What if they were drugging us to keep us
pliable? Now, without the drug, the changes they’ve made have
no check, nothing to keep control.”
“But we brought the majority of the food and water
production with us.”
“It’s the Nauts.” In my urgency, I slip back to calling our
leaders by the old name from when we thought those in the gray
suits were piloting us in space. It takes a beat before I correct
myself. “The Company added it themselves to the water, or
maybe the very air we breathed. Don’t you see? It’s a part of them
having control over the experiment. We have our own inbuilt
self-destruct sequence. We’ll all turn on each other before we can
possibly rise against them.”
“They’re the only ones who can save us.”
“But they want to destroy us.”
“We’ll take the fight to them, there must be a way.” Anything
else Davyd might have said is cut off by a bang from the direction
of the settlement.
“Did you hear that?” I ask.
But he’s already running. “Come on.”
“But I’m supposed to be on guard.”
He spares me a glance over his broad shoulder. A look that
shines through the darkness and the drizzle and slices through to
my soul. “You play babysitter for some rabbits if you want to. I’m
going to fight.”
I hesitate a beat. Long enough for him to disappear down the
trail. This time his hurried steps send rock and gravel tumbling,
and the sound echoes over distant shouts. The sound of a battle.
My longing to be alone wars with the need to know what’s
happening, and the fact that no matter how much I want to, I
can’t sever all links with those who came with me from the ship.
Q tight in my hand, I run.
