Horror Chills & Thrills – Shades by Joseph Rubas #JosephRubas

Are you ready for Shades by Joseph Rubas?

Are you really alone?

Shades: Dark Tales of Supernatural Horror

Amazon  /  Goodreads

Shades is a collection of twenty two short stories that tell about a frightened girl, rampaging zombies, guts and gore, and evil and terror that arise from the depths of hell, to the humans that walk the earth, and those that are out of this world.

Stay away from dark forests basements, and deserted cemeteries because that shadow or bump in the night could be real and deadly.

So pick your most comfortable safest spot turn on all the lights lock the doors and prepare to jump at every noise and shadow…AND be careful who you invite in.

I recommend reading alone at night for the biggest scares and most fun. 😈

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of Shades by Joseph Rubas.

GOODREADS BLURB

Joseph Rubas began writing in 2002 after reading Stephen King’s The Stand. His earliest efforts reflected his deep love of that novel; he tried again and again to write a rip-off, but finally gave up around 2006 and resigned himself to writing original fiction. His first short story was published in May 2010 on the now defunct Horror Bound Online website. His second story was published in September 2010 in a Pushcart Prize nominated literary magazine for new and beginning writers called The Storyteller. Since then, his work has appeared in a number of magazines and anthologies. His first collection, the now out of print Pocketful of Fear, was released by a small publisher in 2012. His second collection, After Midnight, appeared in 2014. His short fiction has appeared in: Nameless Digest; The Horror Zine; Eschatology Journal; Thuglit; Manor House; All Due Respect, and others. He has self-published three longer works: The Rocking Dead: Seasons 1-3 (a parody of the AMC series The Walking Dead); The Rocking Dead: Season 4; The Shapeshifter; and Dracula 1912, the latter a novel.
In addition to writing, he has also edited two anthologies: A Thorn of Death (2012) and The 3rd Spectral Book of Horror Stories (2016)

GENRE: Supernatural thriller

MY REVIEW

The creepy cover of Marionettes by Kerry Alan Denney hints at the story inside. This supernatural thriller has enough twists and turns to keep me reading and marveling at the thought provoking scenarios David is forced to work through as he battles the evil lurking around every corner.

David Flint awoke in a hospital bed, confused and struggling to remember what happened. All he could think was WTH is going on. Have you ever had an out of body experience? David Flint has, but it goes so much further than that…he is the Marionette Man. He can mind jump. He not only knows what people think and feel, but he can control their actions.

I loved the scene in the hospital with the junkie. I wonder if I would have done the same…or worse, but you will have to read the book to find out more.

The Marionettes takes place in Gulfport, Mississippi, a place I know very well. In fact I just returned from a trip there on Tuesday. I know the devastation of a hurricane, which is what killed David Flint. His wife had died in a senseless accident some time before but her family still welcomed him with open arms. Eleana, his mother-in-law, is a hurricane force of her own, giving and well intentioned. Benny, his father-in-law, has a funny streak and is quite the comic, but can be counted on when needed. Shaina, his sister-in-law, has always been in love with him, yet she is determined to be his best friend, if that is what he needs to recover from Karin’s loss. She suffers from Karin’s loss too. She is quite the character and I wonder what their relationship will be.

When David Flint pisses off the wrong guy who is capable of so much more than David, I wonder how he could come out of this alive. The evil grows and challenges every resource he has.

I chuckled at the shower scene…and it’s 5 0’clock somewhere, so if David’s having a beer, I don’t want him to drink alone…so CHEERS.

What would be the repercussions of mind jumping? What moral and ethical dilemmas would arise? Maybe some secrets are best kept.

Marionettes makes me ask the question, “How far would I go to save the ones I love?”

I haven’t read a story quite like Marionettes and I love it. Kerry Alan Denney’s imagination and creative writing lend the story a sense of reality and brought mind jumping to life as I wondered if I would be able to follow the straight and narrow or would I bend the rules for my own personal gain? As David deals with his demons Kerry Alan Denny gives me food for thought and I feel the questions will linger long after I finish reading

I will be checking out more of Kerry Alan Denney’s award winning work and I look forward to taking another fantastic adventure through the pages with him.

I received a copy of Marionettes by Kerry Alan Denney in return for an honest review.

BLURB

Resuscitated after he drowns and dies in a flood, David Flint discovers he has returned from the other side with an uncanny ability: He can “jump” into people’s bodies and minds, and control their thoughts and actions.

David believes it’s a gift, and wants to use it to help people. Then four members of a ruthless drug ring savagely attack his fiancĂ©e and leave her in a coma, and David tries to use his new power to destroy the whole ring. But the ringleader, a voodoo priest known as the Zombie Master, is a formidable man with a deadly secret: He has the same incredible ability as David.

When the two human marionette masters clash in a brutal bloody showdown, using the ring’s members as their puppets, David discovers he’s battling for much more than his life—he’s fighting to rid the world of an evil human abomination.

Marionettes illuminates the greatest achievements of the human spirit and the darkest corridors of our minds, and answers the age-old question: What are the consequences of absolute power?

EXCERPT

My whole life changed after I drowned and died in the flood.

Upon my resurrection, I thought I was dreaming. My head felt fuzzy. A little man inside it was drilling away at my brain with a tiny but immensely effective jackhammer. My mouth felt like it was glued shut, my tongue ten times normal size and made of sandpaper. A crew of little men sliced furrows in my throat with dull rusty swords, cackling merrily as they destroyed my trachea.

Some sadistic bastard apparently burned a branding iron into my corneas.

It was far worse than any hangover I ever had—and I’d had some doozies since Karin died and left me alone, lost, and unmoored in a callous world.

When I woke, the acrid tang of antiseptic mixing with an unpleasant odor stung my nostrils. Through a crimson haze, I saw a pretty nurse gaze down at me and smile. She looked like an angel.

“Hi, David!” she sang, her perfect white teeth gleaming as if lit from within. “Welcome back.” She caressed my face with a warm hand, glanced at some monitoring equipment beside the bed I lay in, and turned and hit a switch behind me. “Laura, page Dr. Yamaguchi. Mr. Flint’s awake.”

The angel turned back to me. “I bet you’re thirsty. We’ll fix that shortly, okay? After the doctor sees you, maybe we can give you some ice chips.”

I shut my eyes to block out the combined glare of her smile and the overhead fluorescence. When I opened them again, an attractive Asian woman in her forties with close-cropped black hair streaked with gray stood over me. Her brow wrinkled, a tentative smile curling the corners of her lips upward.

“Welcome back, Mr. Flint,” she said. “I’m Dr. Yamaguchi. You’re lucky to be alive. It’s a miracle the couple who brought you in were able to resuscitate you. We almost lost you twice last night. Apparently you lead a charmed existence. Don’t try to speak yet.”

I tried anyway, but couldn’t. The miniature swordsmen in my throat were having a blast trying to cut their way out. I nodded, then grimaced as the movement made the mad Lilliputian with the jackhammer pound more little holes in my brain. I shut my eyes again and drifted off.

It was all surreal. I remembered my name and profession, but I couldn’t remember what happened to me. Every time I strained for the memory, it receded while raging torrents of dark waters overwhelmed me.

Consciousness was an assault upon my senses. But in what I initially mistook for dreams, my perception and sense of taste, touch, and smell were immaculate.

Supernatural Chronicles: THE VAMPIRES Synopsis:

After having just survived near annihilation, eighteen-year-old Julia and her vampire friends have reveled in the afterglow, and are now bored. Thankful their enemy is sleeping off the defeat quietly in Julia’s vaults for all eternity, they need a new challenge.

When a letter from the supposed Noir begs for their help with a riddle, it becomes their first case. Not taking the threat seriously, the night loving crew turns the quest into a challenge: First person to solve the mystery, gets to be their new Justice League’s leader. They soon learn it’s not a joke, and once they head to New Orleans, they find others who’d love nothing more than to stand in their way. The threat is real, and unless they figure out what offering the riddle is referring to, all hell will be let loose, literally, rendering them powerless.

Will Julia be able to give up what’s required: a true sacrifice?

Let the hunt begin.

EXCERPT:

Supernatural Chronicles: The Vampires, by Brenda Pandos, is the third in the collection and it features characters from Brenda’s popular Talisman Series.

Mimi moved closer, tearing at her neck with her nails. Blood came to the surface, teasing me. Nicholas moved closer, but I raised my hand for him to stay back.

“I told you,” she whispered. “Now it’s your turn.”

I licked my canines as they lengthened on their own. “But what’s the thing that brings life and death?”

“It has to be your venom,” she said, but the pungent scent of a lie filtered into the air.

Her chest rose and lowered with her quick breaths, her heart fluttering in a staccato beat. Any other time, the blood might have overpowered me. But her blood was like settling for fast food when a gourmet feast was coming, and I didn’t want to spoil my appetite.

“Where is she?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Probably where evil hides in plain sight.” She lifted her chin. Yet another lie. Did she know where The Noir was? “I’m ready, Julia.”

She closed her dark eyes and pulled aside her long dark locks. On her neck was a necklace made from a black velvet ribbon. She’d thought she’d won—that her lies would satisfy me.

“I’m sorry, Mimi, but I need all my power when I take this relic to her.”

“What?” Her eyes opened, flashing hate. She scratched her nails down my cheek. “You are such a liar!”

I stayed her hand and squeezed. “You’re the one not telling the truth.”

About Brenda Pandos:

BrendaMommy warrior, comma-kazi, wife, computer whisperer, Pinterest addict, chocolate enthusiast, vampire and zombie slayer, merman magnet, and lover of all things pure and right. Well… maybe after a cup of coffee or two.

Author Brenda Pandos lives in California and is surrounded by the loves of her life—her husband, her incredible boys, a grumpy cat, eight chickens and her characters. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as an IT administrator. After her son’s ASD diagnosis, everything changed. Being pregnant and embarking on a 35 hour a week in-home therapy schedule was grueling to say the least. She craved a meaningful escape.

Never having aspired to write before, she wrote her own vampire tale for kicks. Four months later, The Emerald Talisman was born. Unsure who’d want to buy her novel, she entered her fledgling book in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and placed as a Quarter-finalist. That gave her the courage to go Indie and from there, she traversed into a life she’d never imagined and loves to this day. And since a small group of fans grew into a larger group of fans, all cheering her onto books two, three, four, five… and so on, she hasn’t looked back.

MY REVIEW

A time of Demons by Kathryn Meyer Griffith has a wicked cover. It gives me a feeling of impending doom. This is Book I of the Before The End Series and after reading this, I cringe at the thought of what lies ahead. This paranormal suspense novel had me, not just rooting for the gang, but rooting for one specific demon too. I want to know so much more about him, about Rayner.

Cassandra and Johnny made their way through life by singing in bars. Sometimes you just have to make do.  Her gift appeared after she was burned in the fire that killed her family, but she still had her brother, Johnny. She now lives in the upstairs of her Aunt Ellie and Uncle George’s duplex. Johnny insists on living alone.

She sees death and so much more.

Don’t even tell them what you see. Don’t ever tell them anything. Oh she’d learned.

Rayner is a blood demon, though most would call him a vampire. He didn’t know why his victims were suddenly haunting him and he hated it. He felt something big was coming.

Mannasseh watched out for the girl. She didn’t know her destiny. Cassandra had a vital part to play in the upcoming battle, the beginning of the end.

Rayner had been watching Cassandra and, literally, bumped into her. She was different. She could see him. How is that possible? He wanted learn more about her. I have a feeling about her and Rayner. Not sure what can become of that, but I am very curious.

The demons cloaked themselves in invisibility and were growing in number. They were arsonists, wife beaters, murderers, doing all they can to create discord and disaster. The demons had been discreet, but were getting bolder by the minute.

Cassandra was confused by her powers. The more they developed, the more she saw and the harder she tried to shrug it off.

Sarah, her best friend, is a psychic and reads Tarot cards and palms. She believes in magic and all the hocus pocus of the Gypsy fortune tellers. She felt terrible trouble was coming, a fight between good and evil, between life and death. Her boyfriend, Walter, works in a carnival and will have his role to play as well.

Cassandra couldn’t quit thinking about the fire that took her family, something felt off about it. Why did her and Johnny survive? Her Uncle George and Aunt Ellie had no answers either.

Thoughts flit through my mind as I read. I wonder, right along with Cassandra.

Circumstances have them coming together as the forces gather around them. They are an army of God.

Can the demons hear them? Is her intuition really the demons talking to her, telling her they know where she is?

The Rapture – angels fall. Can a demon be saved?

The more I read, the more involved I become. I ccouldn’t help but wonder how Kathryn was going to end this. But, wait, this is Book I, so stay tuned for Book II.

A Time of Demons is a different look at the end of the world, very thought provoking. I knew where things were going, but how it got there? Now that’s another story; a demonic, tornadic, apocalyptic ride.

I have been to Poplar Bluff, Mo, a location for A Time of Demons, but I didn’t see any angels or demons.

Demon snacks – people they fed on.

Cracked me up. I love a little humor with my blood sucking.

I received A Time of Demons and Angels by Kathryn Meyer Griffith in return for an honest review.

New Cover and Update for A Vampire At Christmas by Anthony Renfro

Anthony Renfro is reVamping the cover and updating the short story for A Vampire at Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you, but beware…

Vampire at Christmas - High Resolution

Add me to Goodreads now.

MY REVIEW

Anthony Renfro’s short story, A Vampire at Christmas has been rewritten and given a new cover. I am excited to see what he has done with Talan, a hot and sexy vampire.

Talan had been coming home from seeing his fiance, when robbers attacked him and left him for dead. In turn, a vampire took out the robbers and left him with an alternative, immortality or death. He passed out before making the choice, so the vampire made it for him. His blood tasted sweet, while the robbers had tasted salty. MMMM

Ever meet a Parrothead vampire? How about a vampire who’s favorite time of year is Christmas? Do they decorate trees with lots of blinking, sparkling lights? He hung  pictures of sunrises around the crypt to remind himself that he was once human. He wears work boots and a Jimmy Buffet concert shirt. He would have played music if he felt no one would hear. His favorite song is Margaritaville.

Discovering Christmas had changed his feeding pattern. Now he chose mostly those who deserved it. And had something special for those he felt worthy.

How would you like to see Talan coming down your chimney?

I love Talan and the humorous/horror writing of Anthony Renfro.

5 Stars for this fun vampire short story.

SYNOPSIS

5 out of 5 stars: A deadly and dashing vampire

Amazon EBook:  US  /  UK  /  AU  /  CA

EXCERPT

Talan Gawayn became a vampire in the 15th century on a cold, starry, full-moon night just after the first big snow of November. He was walking a less traveled path, on his way home from seeing his fiancĂ©, whom he planned to marry the following spring, when three men stepped out of the shadows to rob him. He fought them at first, but they soon overpowered him, beat him ruthlessly, laughing as they did it, drunk and looking for someone to rob. They had found it in Talan who was so hopelessly in love he hadn’t seen them sneak up on him.

While he lay there in the snow dying from his injuries, one eye shut and swollen, the other able to see only a blurry vision, he thought he saw something, something moving quick and fast. The men who had beaten him were counting out their stolen money when this thing attacked them. It tore through their flesh, ripped out their throats savagely; and didn’t just drain the robbers of their precious blood, but this thing seemed to almost be bathing in it while it fed.

Talan tried to stay focused, tried to see what this thing was, but his will gave out and his good eye closed. He passed out into an injured slumber.

Weight.

Something heavy was straddling him . . .

Title: Sarai’s Fortune
Series: Shadowcat Nation #2
Author:  Abigail Owen
Publication Date: May 13, 2015
Genre: Paranormal Romance

MY REVIEW

I loved the first book, Andromeda’s Fall by Abigail Owen (see my review below), so I am very excited to read more in Sarai’s Fortune, Book II. Sarai’s Fortune picks up right where Andromeda’s Fall left off.

Sarai is a seer and a cougar shapeshifter. She ends up staying with Zac and his polar bear clan, because of the danger represented in the Carstair’s werewolf clan. She is petite, but a fighter. People see her as weak, shy and needing protection, but she is proficient in martial arts and her skill with knives is unsurpassed.

Zac is all man, except when he is a polar bear. LOL

The fight scenes are fantastic and the love scenes are not erotic, but adult. The cast of characters had me eating out of their hands, wanting to know what happens next. The world building made it easy for me to visualize the surroundings. Abigail Owens ability to spin a tale captivated me and I look forward to reading more of her work

I received a copy of Sarai’s Fortune in return for an honest review.

SYNOPSIS

Zac Montclair’s first priority is to protect his people. With the escalating war between factions of shifters over land and resources, he has agreed to an alliance between his polar bears and the Shadowcat Nation of cougar shifters. But the treaty comes with a condition
he must accept one of their Seers into his Timik and put her under his personal protection.

Sarai Bouchard doesn’t need her supernatural gift to know that Kyle Carstairs’s obsession with controlling her ability will eventually result in her misery and demise. Her power is essential to her people’s survival, so when Kyle goes rogue, she’s sent to Zac Montclair to keep her safe. However, her visions reveal that while staying will lead to their becoming lovers, it also leads to his death. Leaving Zac will result in her own.

If Sarai can’t find a way to change the future, she will be forced to choose
save her lover or save herself.

REVIEW

I am loving this cover and am really curious about the Shadowcat Nation. It sounded different than the books I have read about shapeshifters and I am always on the lookout for a new slant on a familiar story.

The quick love is not a problem. They are “animals”, so they don’t waste any time. 🙂 I wish Abigail would have expanded on it a little bit more. Since blogging, I have come to enjoy learning more about the characters and why they do what they do.

Andromeda is a strong, kickass female. She’s intelligent, fierce and a fighter, yet she likes the girlie girl things too. She can be a softie and is a big romantic.

I can relate to Andromeda’s fight or flight feelings. Without training, I think I would be more reactive than proactive. Not so, Andromeda.

I thought I knew a lot of what would happen, but Abigail Owen threw in some curve balls that I didn’t see coming. The wide variety of  shifters made Andromeda’s Fall a novel and original story for me. I mean a polar bear? Have you read of a polar bear shifter before?

The first time they made love drew a laugh from me and I love their snarky banter.

The big fight scene is fully developed and detailed. Even though I knew the winners, I was totally engrossed.

Sarai appears in physical form at the end and I can hardly wait to read her story.

Even if fated, can a person’s choice change that?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Andromeda’s story. Abigail Owen took a familiar storyline, added her twists and originality, making this a great story and hooking me on the series.

I received Andromeda’s Fall by Abigal Owen in return for an honest review.

MY REVIEW

I love everything about the cover. It says so much in its simplicity, loaded full of what is to come.

A trio, a road trip and the devil nipping at their heels.

Their parents died in a car crash and there was no one left to raise them but a worthless uncle. Is Sam good? Is Johnny bad? Could one or both of them have been saved if given half a chance?

As kids, they had a good time sitting outside the store, watching people come and go. I wanted to mention this, because it reminds me of a time in Mobile, Alabama and a certain convenience store. I used to run in for things like milk and bread and there was always people of one age and type or another hanging around. By tagging my inner me, a book draws me in further and makes me immediately relate to the story.

Sam was ten when Johnny made his first kill, he had to do it to save Sam.

…foot to nuts mistake…hit in the twig and berries. I laughed out loud!!!

When Ash enters the picture, Sam becomes very suspicious. Secrets were being kept and he had no idea the impact they would have on their lives. As they set off on their adventure, evil forces surrounding them have an agenda of their own.

To put it bluntly, this is a fucked up story about three fucked up kids on a spree that I’m hoping will take them down and soon. At times, I have a small amount of empathy for Sam, but I’m still hoping he gets his. At other times, I find myself torn between wanting them all to die or wanting them all to get out of the evil mess they are in.

It is great writing when I want to root for the most heinous, despicable trio there is or so I thought. Is anybody who they really seem to be? If not who or what are they? If you aren’t all bad are you good?

The supernatural genre can be so off the wall, yet I knew the answers were coming and I let the story come to me instead of trying to make it fit into a preconceived notion.

Horror that goes on and on. What keeps someone from giving up? How much can someone take before they surrender? Possession. Undead. Its so hard to describe the rabbit hole Same goes down. I find it hard to believe he can survive. Manipulation. Hallucinations. Creatures that morph into even uglier creatures.

I had this as a B movie running through my head, yelling kill it again, kill it again, they never stay dead. LOL Cut their heads off and burn them to ashes, disperse the ashes into the wind.

Victim Souls by Andrew Terech was a horror story that had me anticipating what was coming next and wondering when it was going to end. I don’t know what else could happen to them and any of them survive. I don’t think there will be a happy every after for the trio, but I am eager to find out what their end will be. A great read that will have you looking over your shoulder and squinting into corners, wondering… is that movement in the shadows?

I received a copy of Victim Souls in return for an honest review.

Friday 56 #37 & BB #14 ~ Road Trip and The Supernatural

The first of the week, we took a road trip over to Biloxi, Mississippi. We had some great weather, in the low 70s, sunny and warm. We love this quaint little town. We took some beautiful photos and did a little gambling. We also, stopped by practice for the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. I love football, so I will get in my last fixes before the season comes to its climax in the Super Bowl. Do you like football or have a favorite college or pro football team?

The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda’s Voice.

The only rules are to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your ereader and find any sentence or a few ( no spoilers) that grabs you and post it.

Please join Rose City Reader every Friday to share the first sentence or so of the book you are reading along with you initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

Please include the title of the book and the author’s name.

I have been reading and reading and reading.

The synopsis is the first paragraph of the book, so here is an additional little tease.

Then, it turned out to be true. Looking back with wiser eyes now, my family and I concluded that the events leading up to my transformation started the summer I turned nine.

SYNOPSIS

My name is Sheryl Ilene Newcomb. And yes, my initials are S.I.N. A funny little piece of whimsical humor my parents found amusing when I arrived.

Then, it turned out to be true. Looking back with wiser eyes now, my family and I concluded that the events leading up to my transformation started the summer I turned nine. But the day we realized there was a problem, and no turning back, was a week before I started my senior year at Junction City High. The day the fangs and claws appeared and the monster inside of me emerged.

When mutilated corpses appeared near a pile of brush down by Caney Creek, everything changed. Because evil woke up and growled, its ominous rumblings heard by every living thing in Locasia County, Mississippi.

I have been to Mississippi lot of times, but never in the swamp.

Have you been?

EXCERPT

Appalachian Mountains, Virginia 1723

Pril Peddler lifted the green shawl from her trunk and wrapped it around her bare arms. The change in seasons brought a damp chill to the morning air, and the heavy woolen wrap kept her warm. She peeked at the small face huddled under the blankets at the back of the wagon. The charm above the child swayed on the string Pril had hung it from. A dull ache hummed in her chest when she thought of the horrific loss her clan had been dealt.

The evil was near, and she’d need to work another spell to keep them safe. Late for counsel with her brother, Galius, she kissed the soft cheek of her daughter before heading to the door.

Hand up, she shaded her eyes from the bright sun as she stepped from the back of the vard.

She pulled the heavy burlap curtain down to close the opening and walked toward Galius.

“Your steps are light this morning, Sister. One would think you did not want to be heard,” Galius said as he stirred the coffee beans inside the metal pot.

Tension twisted her gut. He was right; she did not want this counsel. She did not know what to say. She let the flicker of merriment in her brother’s eyes wash over her relaxing the muscles in her shoulders.

“My step is the same.” She poked him with her finger trying to ease her own nerves and his as well.

His lips lifted as ifto smile, and she held her breath. It’d been weeks since he smiled. Pril’s heart ached, and her lips trembled.

He held up the bubbling pot. “Would you like a cup?”

She inhaled the aroma of strong coffee beans and nodded taking a seat on a wooden stump by the fire.

He handed her a cup and sat down across from her.

The wood crackled, and sparks jumped from the heat onto the ground in front of her. She tipped her chin concentrating on what to say next. Ever since the murder of her niece, she’d not been able to hold a conversation with either of her brothers without offering apologies. This morning was no different. She could not look Galius in the eyes and see the anguish and sorrow within them.

The Monroes had come again.

They’d never be safe.

She blinked away the tears hovering against her thick lashes. Tsura was asleep in her wagon, while another was lost to them forever. The door of her brother’s wagon creaked open and Milosh’s wife, Magda, stepped out. Black circles settled around her sunken eyes, and Pril felt the stab in her chest once more. Long brown hair fell untied down the woman’s back. The black clothes she’d put on weeks ago hung on her body unchanged and wrinkled from sleep. Milosh came from behind their wagon, a jar of honey in his hand. Pril stood when Galius’ large hand grabbed her wrist.

“They are not wanting to see you today, Sister.”

She heard the regret in his voice, swallowed past the guilt in her own throat and nodded. Milosh hadn’t spoken a single word to her since the death of his child. He blamed her, and it was clear so did Magda.

“I
I’m so sorry, Galius.”

He didn’t reply right away, and without seeing it, she knew he had wiped the tears from his eyes. “Alexandra’s death is not your fault.”

The words were spoken because they needed to be. Gypsies stayed together no matter what. They were family. There was no truth to his words, and Pril knew it.

“Are you going after them?” she asked.

“I hold no power, no spells flow from my lips. I am strong, yes, but they are stronger.” He stared at her, his eyes pleading. “We need the pendant.”

Guilt thickened her tongue; the gritty residue clung to her lips and tasted bitter.

The talisman had been in their family for generations, blessed by each new Chuvani.

Vadoma had promised her the pendant before she died, but Pril never saw it, and there had been no time to search for the jewel when they fled.

“Without the pendant we cannot break the curse. We cannot protect our people.”

She knew this. They all knew this, but no one had a clue as to where the talisman was. She’d tried to call an image forward, to make a finding spell, but nothing worked.

“We have lost one of our own. Our clan is frightened. They have lost faith. We cannot fight the Monroes. We have neither the numbers nor the skill.” He took a long drink of his coffee.

“And neither do you.”

She glanced at him.

“I know you, Sister. You’re planning to take Tsura.”

Pril sighed. She did not know what else to do. The Monroes were coming for her child.

Alexandra had died because of that. Milosh and Magda hated her.

“Running is not going to change anything.”

“It will save lives. It will
help Milosh and Magda to heal.”

“No, it will not. Running will get you and Tsura killed and that is all.”

“How can you look at me when you know what I’ve brought to our family, when you know
that this is all because of me?”

Galius blew out a long breath that moved his thick beard from his lips. She watched through tear filled eyes as his bottom lip quivered.

“Vadoma put this burden on you. For that, we do not judge.”

Their sister had died a vile death. She’d betrayed their clan and had hung while being burned. Pril ached for her sister’s guidance and counsel. She yearned to know that what she was doing was right.
