I am so happy to be sharing a new novel, Jubilee’s Journey, from the award winning novelist, Bette Lee Crosby.

Bette Lee is as warm and charming as her characters. Maybe that is why her characters are so realistic, as are their stories. Read the interview below to find out for yourself.

Spare Change was the first book of Bette Lee’s that I read and it is still my favorite. To see my review, go HERE. I have been an avid fan of hers ever since.

BOOK BLURB FROM GOODREADS

When tragedy strikes a West Virginia coal mining family, two children start out on a trek that they hope will lead them to a new life. Before a day passes, the children are separated and the boy is caught up in a robbery not of his making. If his sister can find him, she may be able to save him. The problem is she’s only seven years old, and who’s going to believe a kid?

Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series. This story of discovering lost family and finding love reconnects readers with Ethan Allen and the other heart-warming characters of the bestselling novel SPARE CHANGE.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW WITH BETTE LEE CROSBY
I am so happy to have you here today Bette. I believe your interview will give my readers an idea of how you are able to come up with such wonderful and interesting characters and stories for your books.
1. Who or what inspired you to become an author?
My mother, born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia, was not a writer, but, she was a wonderful storyteller. Not realizing that at heart I was my mother’s daughter, I studied art intent upon becoming a graphic designer. My first job was that of a packaging designer, but it was a short-lived career. Faced with an immediate deadline and a blank space where the copy should have been, I began to write. I never looked back, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that my love for words far outweighed any design skills I acquired along the way.
2. Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series, but wasn’t Book One, Spare Change, written as a stand-alone novel?
Yes it was. Actually all of my books are stand-alone novels, but after Spare Change was published, I discovered that both I and my readers were not ready to leave Wyattsville and the people living there. That’s when I turned it into an ongoing series. Like many writers, I tend to favor the books that reflect the most poignant aspects of their life. For me, it’s my Southern heritage.
3. Will there be more books in The Wyattsville Series?
Although I do not have one currently planned, I’m sure there will be. Once you get involved with characters you are fond of, it’s hard to let them leave your life forever. I find that I think of characters like Olivia Doyle, Ethan Allen, Paul and Jubilee as friends. I might not get back together with them for six or eight months, but I always know they are there…waiting for me and ready to start off on a new adventure.
4. You’ve written six novels, in those books, which character is your favorite and why?
I suppose I’d have to say Ethan Allen of Spare Change and the reason why is because he is the type of kid I imagine my mom being when she was his age. She came from a family of eleven siblings and they were what many of us would consider poor; so she had to be resilient and determined to survive. And although she wasn’t one to toss around obscenities indiscriminately, she could cuss up a storm when she was really mad. When Mama started cussing we knew to step aside and mind our manners.
 5.  Is Ethan Allen is modeled after your mom, is there a character that you’d modeled after yourself?
There is probably a bit of me in every character, but the one most like me would probably be Olivia Doyle in both Spare Change and Jubilee’s Journey. Like Olivia, I have quirky ideas about life, I am an eternal optimist and regardless of the odds, I will always go down swinging. When life takes a turn for the worse, that’s when you need to be strong, draw on your Faith and cling to the love of those around you…which is pretty much what Olivia does.
5. What is your next book project?
I am currently working on a novel titled “Previously Loved Treasures.” Although it is not a sequel, it does dovetail into the mystery that ended “The Twelfth Child.” One of the protagonists in this book is a delightful man of magical talents called Peter Pennington and much of the story centers around a very special second-hand store. I believe this book is scheduled for release in April or May of 2014.
6. What is your favorite quote?
It probably depends upon when and where you ask me. I would love to be deep and profound like so many brilliant writers, but I’ve learned over the years that I am still my mother’s daughter – sometimes irreverent, always a story-lover, but seldom brilliant. So here is the quote that most closely reflects my own thinking…”The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues.” Elizabeth Taylor
7. What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
 Be yourself. Discover what’s in your heart and create characters you love or love to hate. Never allow yourself to follow in the tracks of another author simply because he or she sold a million copies of their book. If you stumble on that pathway, your readers will know; your characters will sound shallow and superficial. But if you’re true to yourself and work to develop your own voice it will ring loud and true with believability. It isn’t something that happens overnight. I wrote four novels before the fifth was published, but the truth is that the first four didn’t deserve to be published, they were all part of my learning curve. So, stay with it and learn from the writers who inspire you, from the books you love, and from the books you hate. You learn something from every book you read, and sometimes that something is what not to do.  Most of all enjoy every minute you spend writing—because if you’re not writing for fun, you shouldn’t be writing.
MY REVIEW OF JUBILEE’S JOURNEY
“We’ll name her Jubilee, because this child is a celebration of our love.”
Thus, Jubilee’s story began and you will not want to miss it.
~~~~~~

Jubilee’s Journey is the sequel to Spare Change. Spare Change was the first book of Bette Lee’s that I read and it is still my favorite. I have been an avid fan of hers ever since.

The southern charm and giving nature of the characters captivate me. It makes me think of Hillary Clinton’s book, It Takes A Village. This book drives home the point that a community can accomplish so much more than a single individual. We can definitely learn some lessons from the loving and giving characters in Bette Lee’s novels.

I love her covers and this one speaks to me as strongly as all the others. They are some of the most touching and emotional covers in their simplicity. The cover design for Jubilee’s Journey was done by Kathleen Valentine of valentinedesign.com. Bette Lee will also occasionally incorporate a friend or fan’s name into her novels.

Living in coal country is never easy, but for Paul and Jubilee it became impossible.

Their mother died and my tears began. Paul did his best to be there for Jubilee – he never returned to school, so he did all he could think of to make Jubilee’s life better  and took care of the house. After his father’s death, they were evicted from the only home they had ever known. How would Paul keep his promise to his mother to take care of Jubilee and his promise to his father to never work in the mine?

He knew of an aunt in Wyattsville, Virginia. He only had a name, Anita, but off they went.

Into the clouds - (c) Sherry J Fundin

Into the clouds – (c) Sherry J Fundin

Hurt McAdams dad had abused him and raised him with fear. As a defense, he took the offensive line and became a bully, then a murderer. He ended up in Wyattsville on his search to find his father and make him pay for his miserable life.

Oh no, Paul is in the store looking for work and here comes Hurt. I am very fearful, my heart is heavy with dread. I knew it. Bette!!!! But, what’s this? Who should arrive but Ethan Allen and I breathe a sigh of relief. No way will he allow anything bad to happen to Jubilee.

“Grandma Olivia’s nice. She helps kids in trouble.”

That being said, I knew things would be okay. Somehow.

Bette Lee Crosby writes stories as if they are biographies. They are full of the cruelties and unfairness of life, but also the beauty and wonder. The worlds and dialogue are so real, I feel as if I am there and I feel frustrated because I do not know what to do to help. She packs so much life and realism into her novels, sometimes a BOX of tissues is not enough. I laugh and cry with the characters. I go through their highs and lows, their ups and downs, all the while trying to figure out how Bette is going to make this end with a happy ever after.

The ending left me begging for more. I was sitting on the edge of my seat as if my happiness was on the line.

Book Blast Giveaway for Fatal Trust by Diana Miller

SBB_FatalTrust_BannerThe cover of Fatal Trust has an aura of mystery.

Are they walking? Talking? Conspiring?

I love it.

Shadow-filled rooms of his mansion in the wooded hills near Lake Superior – I was born and raised in Michigan and have swam in the ice cold waters of Lake Superior on more than one occasion.

BLURB

Stepping her perfect Jimmy Choos into place beside Ben Gallagher’s wounded Nikes, straitlaced Philadelphia lawyer Catherine Barrington is surprisingly unable to resist the disarming small-town mechanic’s charm. He’s one of the heirs to the vast fortune left by his eccentric grandfather Max, a bestselling horror writer, and she’s there to carry out Max’s last wishes. Routine enough…except that inheriting comes with a catch: none of Max’s heirs will get a penny until they’ve lived together for two weeks in the shadow-filled rooms of his mansion in the wooded hills near Lake Superior.

From beyond the grave, a letter from Max insists that his death was no accident, sending Catherine undercover—and way out of her comfort zone—to catch the killer. Posing as Lexie, Ben’s cocktail waitress girlfriend, Catherine soon finds herself trapped with the feuding clan at the sinister Nevermore manor. To save her own life, she’ll have to confront the murderer, as well as her growing attraction to Ben—a top suspect.

Catherine woke abruptly, opening her eyes in the total blackness, her heart hammering. It must have been a nightmare, one she couldn’t remember even though it must have scared her to death. She glanced at the clock: 11:47. She closed her eyes again.SBB_FatalTrust_CoverBanner

“I’m counting on you to find out who killed me.”

Her blood turned to ice. “Who is it?” she asked, unnecessarily, since she knew that distinctive voice.

“You know who I am, Catherine. Just remember the money is the key. Because I really was murdered.”

She was finally alert enough to think to switch on the bedside lamp. For an instant she swore she saw Max Windsor standing across the room by the dresser, studying her.

But it couldn’t be. She blinked twice.

When she focused on the spot by the dresser again, it was empty.

But no matter how many garbage cans she dug through, conversations she “accidentally” overheard, and attics she searched, she never found a single cryptic letter, hidden staircase, or anything else even remotely mysterious. She worked as a lawyer, a soda jerk, a stay-at-home mom, a hospital admitting clerk, and a conference host before deciding that the best way to inject suspense into her otherwise satisfying life was by writing about it.

Blog Tour,Review & Giveaway for Dark Cravings by Madeline Pryce

I am very pleased to be a part of Madeline Pryce’s blog tour for Dark Cravings.

I read the book when it came out as Blood Lust Rising. I had a review ready, but never published it. Madelyne had seemed to drop from sight, but I found out why. She was doing the author thing, you know, finding a publisher and such. lol

Warning: This novel is rated for Adults only.

I rarely do erotic, but this book was recommended to me by Laura, my sister, at fuonlyknew. I always pay attention to her recommendations. She could not quit talking about the first chapter. “Whew”, I say, as I blush head to toe. But Laura was right. Not only was my Kindle smoking, it was burning up! For all you erotic lovers, this is a MUST Read!

The sex, when it’s not leaving them on the verge of death, is earth shattering and for the first time in ages Ella is connected with someone on a level she’d feared lost forever. My Review of Dark Cravings by Madeline Pryce

I read this book when it was Blood Lust Rising. I have reread the new and improved Dark Cravings and I must tell you, I could not put it down. That is, until the battery in my Kindle died.

~~~
Hot cover and very appropriate title.
Dark Cravings is Ella’s story. The detail and depth of Madeline Pryce’s descriptions is amazing. It is easy to visualize the battles, Ella and Micah’s attraction to each other, the characters that surround them and the world they inhabit.
Ella Gray – I am neither human nor vampire, the thing I was raised to kill. Some consider me a demon, an undesirable, an abomination. I am a hunter and I love every minute of it. I work for the Shadow Agency  My mission is to protect humans from rogue vampires and keep our existence a secret.
The vampire world has its own set of rules and regulations with appropriate penalties for those that run afoul of the Shadow Agency.
Micah is the son of the agency’s leader. Ella and Micah had an attraction they fought, but could never put aside. I thought they were already fated to be together before the succubus came into their lives.
By her and Micah being together, Ella had changed. They had changed. The gates of Hell were opened, spawning demons, and the earth protested with hurricanes and tornadoes. Who knew what else would be affected by their lust and desire.
Their journey through their destinies are treacherous. Betrayal follows them everywhere they go. The gruesome, graphic horror is peppered with humor and laughter.
Madelyne describes Ella getting dressed to go to the club and I couldn’t help but laugh at her thoughts about the choice of clothing Hannah, her sister, had chosen for her.
Either the top was too small or my tits had gone from a B cup to a C. Jesus, if I bent over, my nipples might pop out.
I was so involved with the story, the hours passed as if they were minutes. I felt a huge letdown when I reached the last page, wanting the story to continue. And it will. So, you will want to follow Madeline Pryce to see what she has in store for Ella, Micah and the cast of characters you will either love or hate in Dark Cravings.
QUOTES
“The Vampire Queen and yes…the Demon Son. Destruction and Mayhem.”
“God, you’re a bitch. The way he said it, I heard goddess.”
“I crossed my arms under my breasts, which is a mistake, because they almost fell out.”
“When the hell did you get so possessive? Why don’t you just pee on me and get it over with.”
“Nothing says heartless like matching coffee mugs that read, ‘Stand back. I’ve got fleas and ‘Demons do it better’.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My only complaint: The cover. I know you can’t judge a book by its cover or you might miss some good reads. However, covers do have a huge influence over me.

I confess that I liked the Blood Lust Rising cover better. Ella looks so fierce, I just knew there was a fantastic story waiting to be told – and it is Ella’s story. BUT I know sometimes this is taken out of the author’s hands and that’s okay. It doesn’t affect the quality of the novel.
.

“So this is your little ball of claws.”

I love Madelyne’s description of Ella and the old cover fit this phrase to a T.

What do you think of the Dark Cravings cover?

Will the Domino Effect topple them? The Blake Mistake by I C Camilleri

I C Camilleri’s Blake series is a psychic adventure into the future.

Would their interference in current events be their future downfall?

Read on to see if the Domino Effect will topple them.

The cover of The Blake Mistake is awesome. I love the simplicity and subtle colors.

 MY 5 STAR REVIEW OF THE BLAKE SOUL.

 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

Emma found the trapdoor in the edge of the woods by accident.

She had no idea of the horror that had taken place in the hidden rooms.

No idea of how it would play into her future.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Blake Mistake has so much going on, I’m trying to think how I will describe it to you. I C Camilleri writes of the paranormal, romance, suspense, horror, murders, a serial killer, insecurity and jealousy and how the characters do there best to survive and find a happy ending.
Right off the bat, I C Camilleri surprised me. What? I should have known it would not be that simple. So many sub plots, my head would spin at times, being torn first one way and then another.
This review is really hard to write. I do not want to give away any of the good stuff. The surprises just keep on coming and I want you to find them on your own. So, here we go.
He wanted to go home. Would Jake welcome him? When I find out who he is and how he comes to return home, I’m stunned. My jaw dropped open and I just sat and sat, thinking.
Sam loved Jake as a brother and chose to marry Ben. Ben was always insecure about Sam and Jake’s relationship, but talk about really insecure, let’s talk about Emma.
Emma had set her sights on Jake as soon as she met him and got him. She is drop dead gorgeous and is so afraid that when she is old and gray, Jake will no longer love her. Emma’s brother is Ben.
Ben is a psychic, like his father Josh.
Ben’s dream took him away. He had a psychic glimpse into the future. Josh had seen it too. Ben, could choose to save his brother, Nick, but what about the others? Thousands of lives would change if he chose to rewrite destiny.  It would spread out into the world, like a ripple in the water. Could you live with it?
By seeing the future, Ben had interfered before and changed Jake’s destiny. Jake in turn was there to save Ben. What if meddling is a Mistake? A minor shift could make a massive change. What would the repercussions be? And would they come back to bite them.
Jake, Sam and Cathy’s nightmare past shaped their entire future and made them best friends for life.
I was reading along, when WTF? How could Jake do that? What a bummer. I don’t like this at all. Then Sam steps in. Without her, Jake’s life would have become much different. But you will have to read The Blake Mistake for yourself to find out what is happening.
The story just keeps getting better and better. There is so much going on and I C Camilleri kept me guessing. I liked that I had to slow down and take in all she was telling me.
Awesome, how she made Jake’s world. I cannot fathom it. How does I C Camilleri come up with these scenarios?  It’s a miracle that Jake ended up such a good man. His biggest downfall is jealousy. It is a ferocious beast that dominates his relationship with Emma. Between his jealousy and her insecurity, will their love for each other be enough to keep them together?
As I neared the end, my emotions ran AMOK. I felt a sense of urgency. I felt deep sorrow and am awed at I C Camilleri’s ability to take me to such a dark place. The scariest monsters are the human kind.
My eyes are watering and my hands are getting sweaty. Good thing I’m reading my Kindle and not a paperback. At least, I don’t think it will short circuit.
“You always think that you know best just because you have that Blake gift.”
“It’s not a gift, it is a bloody Curse.”
MY 5 STAR REVIEW OF THE BLAKE SOUL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I.C. CamilleriSomething about me…well, that’s complex. Basically I’m a medical doctor living in the UK. Reading and writing have always been my passion, relieving me from the everyday stress of my medical job. My first published novel is THE BLAKE CURSE. It is a psychological thriller and a romance set in Cambridge. It pivots on three powerful characters; Ben Blake, the young and gifted British Intelligence officer embarking on his first undercover assignment; the elusive Samantha Black; and Jake Snell, the rugged Earl full of vices, the rogue who has to tease out that single thread of goodness inside his crumbling shell. He is Ben’s only lifeline in this treacherous game.
My second novel, THE BLAKE SOUL is different from my first in that it is more of a romance, focusing on the passion and love between two people with totally different backgrounds and interests. Here’s the synopsis to whet your appetite;

.
Josh Blake wakes up to the sound of the chilling scream echoing inside his head. His childhood nightmares are haunting him again. But why return now after all those years of oblivion? He sets out to investigate and he changes the natural course of events, rewriting destiny and creating a whole new world for himself and those around him. His past turbulent childhood mingles with the present, unveiling the deep insecurities that lurk behind his polished exterior of fame, glory and wealth.

EXCERPT
.

It started with a purple moose.

At least I thought it was a moose. On reflection, it could have been a reindeer, but it didn’t matter at the time because it was obviously just a dream.

“Mistletoe,” the moose-reindeer said.

Yep. Still hate my parents for naming me that.

“Mistletoe,” it said again in a spooky echo of a voice, “I am the Ghost of Christmases Ruined, and I have come to tell you something.”

“Go away.” I turned over in bed.

“Mistletoe Bell,” it said sharply. “Listen to me right now.”

I sat up, suddenly wide awake. God, what a freaky dream.

“Mistletoe Bell,” it said again. I jumped out of my skin. I clutched the duvet to me as I turned around. Of all the things I expected to see, the purple moose sitting in the middle of my carpet and looking annoyed was about the last of them.

“Wh… what are you?” I asked quietly. I didn’t really believe my eyes. I must still be dreaming.

“I’ve tried to tell you already. I am the Ghost of Christmases Ruined.”

I tried to pinch myself awake without the moose noticing. It didn’t work. I didn’t wake up and the moose noticed.

“It won’t work,” the moose said. “You’re already awake.”

“I’m looking at a talking purple moose. I don’t think so.”

“You are Mistletoe Bell?” the moose asked.

I dropped my head into my hands and edged closer to the other side of the bed.

The moose continued to look at me expectantly.

“Unfortunately, yes. I couldn’t be anyone else with that stupid name.”

“It’s a very nice Christmas name.”

“That’s exactly the bloody problem. You try having a stupid Christmassy name in the middle of July or something.”

“Ah yes, but it’s December now.”

“Screw December,” I muttered.

“Aha,” the moose said. “This is exactly why I’m here.”

I gave it an angry look. “What the hell are you going on about?”

“Well, if you’d be so kind as to allow me to get to my point, I will enlighten you.”

I sighed in frustration.

“Mistletoe Bell,” the moose said, “you have been charged with ruining Christmas. Multiple counts over the years, but a particularly aggressive case this year when taking into account the fire—”

“The fire was an accident.”

It gave me a glare and I rolled my eyes. “Please go on,” I said, complete with a sarcastic hand gesture.

“As I was saying…” The moose had an annoyed tone to its voice now. “Ruining Christmas, multiple counts, we can’t let it continue. We’ve been keeping an eye on you for a while now. We were actually hoping you might grow out of it now you’re nearly seventeen, but the fire this year is the final straw. Mistletoe—”

“Please stop calling me that.” I interrupted it again. “It’s Mis, Misty, or nothing.”

The moose rolled its eyes. “I am required to call you by your proper name at all times. Now, can we get on with it?”

“Get on with what?”

“Mistletoe Bell, tomorrow you will be taken to the North Pole where you will stay until you can learn how to behave acceptably and stop ruining Christmas for others. You will be part of a group who will learn the value of Christmas to all involved.”

“That’s ridiculous. Who’s going to teach me? The polar bears?”

“The elves will teach you.”

“Of course they will.” I smacked my forehead. “Of course there are elves. I don’t know why I expected anything else from a purple moose.”

The moose made a frustrated noise. “Mistletoe, do you understand?”

“I will be taken to the North Pole and taught by elves? Yes, I understand perfectly.”

“I must be on my way. Sweet dreams, Mistletoe.” The moose got up and jumped out of the window.

I rolled over and went back to sleep. I must’ve eaten cheese before bed last night or something.

There were more weird dreams. I dreamt of flying above the rooftops and over the oceans, and it was really, really cold. I’m pretty sure I could hear strains of “Walking in the Air” in the distance.

 BLURB

Seeking justice for her daughters murder Tina must seek answers in the supernatural realm. Terror is spreading over Pendale. Love is pitted against a dreadful force.

EXCERPT

Deep into an uneasy dream Tina’s face was twisted in consternation.
Dan hadn’t stayed over this evening. She’d told him she needed time to gather strength and come to grips with what lay ahead.
He’d looked hurt. She knew he could not understand her need to be alone at such a time.
He offered to sit up with her all night.
She told him she was wrung out; she would be able to sleep a bit.
She longed to fall into unconsciousness and to block all thought.
Her bedroom felt airless.
The little clock on her nightstand seemed to have a very loud tick tonight. The dials revealed it to be 1:00 pm.
Still asleep Tina shifted her weight to lie on her back.
Her heavy cotton nightgown became bunched up under the small of her back.
Suddenly she brought up her hands folding them over her chest in the position that the dead are laid out.
Beads of sweat broke out on her face, although the temperature in her room was a cool sixty-four degrees.
She was carrying groceries to her car in a dark parking lot.
Behind her there was a small convenience store. It was lit up. The buildings light stopped at the front of the building.
Tina tossed her bag of groceries into the passenger side of the seat. Just as she lifted her leg to get in behind the wheel she thought of her mother. She’d yell up a storm if she could see her now. As a teen Tina was lectured countless times about getting into a car alone. First check out the back seat to make sure no one was lurking there, she could still her mom stress.
Tina sat her leg back down on the pavement. She opened the back door. All clear.
She slid into the front seat closing her door and rolling down her window most of the way.
Glancing out her open window she began to shake all over.
Two hands with long tapered fingers suddenly grasp the window!
As if in slow motion a hooded figure raised itself!
Her door was flung open wide.
It pushed her backward sending her sprawling across the seat.
She was immobile from fear.
The thing lowered itself to her feet.
It covered her with its form inch by inch.
Its dark cloak was spread wide to enfold her completely.
Her heart thumped so hard she felt ready to pass out praying she would.
It was up to her head now.
Tina was so cold it was as if she were entombed within a block of ice
The smell of decay surrounding her was so rank she couldn’t catch a good breath.
The hood slipped back a bit. She couldn’t decipher its features clearly. She could only make out black pinpoint eyes.
Drool oozed from its mouth. A great gob of spittle plunked down on her forehead.
She let out a scream.
She thought she’d cried out, and awoken.
It was actually only phase two.
Still dreaming she thanked the Lord that it was only a nightmare.
Lights flickered from the traffic through her drapes.
Something in the room didn’t feel right.
The sheet was shifting downward of its own accord.
Two hands grasp the foot of the bed as a cloaked figure crawled up and over her!
She surrendered herself up to it.
She was entirely passive until sirens from a passing rescue unit brought her to an actual waking state ending her ordeal.
Rest would elude her the remainder of the night. She sighed and got up from the bed.
First light would signal the start of her greatest trial.
She must commend her only offspring to eternal rest.

The Bitches of Brooklyn guest post

By ROSEMARY HARRIS

Ever felt like you were sitting in the middle of a scene from a book or movie? One that’s already been written or one you could see yourself writing?

I had that feeling about three years ago and it was the inspiration for my new book, The Bitches of Brooklyn.

Four friends and I had planned an all-girls weekend in Sedona. We had discussed and agonized over the location for months (we’d be coming from all parts of the country and wanted to be fair in terms of time and expense.) One of us even created a spreadsheet so we could compare the various choices. (She’s an accountant, so we forgave her.) And then, at the eleventh hour, one of us had to cancel. If I’m not mistaken she had lobbied hardest for the place we finally decided on. That first night – without her – was interesting.

We didn’t trash her (hint about the book?) But after a few glasses of wine I started to think, hmmmm what if she DIDN’T have a last-minute work obligation? What if it was something else…

Happily she didn’t suffer the grisly fate my missing character did in the first draft of the book. And she didn’t do what my fictional character ultimately did but that was the genesis of The Bitches of Brooklyn.

In it the four women at the heart of the story, childhood friends named Jane (a bakery owner), Rachel (a vet), Clare (an unemployed producer) and Tina (a teacher and fledgling novelist) receive a cryptic note from their missing friend and they spend the weekend eating, drinking and reevaluating their friendships, their marriages, their jobs and their memories. But when Monday comes, these babes want answers. And they go to vastly different lengths to get them.

Having written a few cozy mysteries, it was a lot of fun not to feel obliged to have bodies dropping all over the place and to have a non law enforcement professional irrationally inserting herself into a crime scene. Think Paula Holliday with misdemeanors instead of felonies! And…halleluiah…unlike most cozy heroines, they get to have sex.

There’s a fair amount of humor – because I can see the humor in practically anything. And if you liked Paula, Babe and Lucy, I think you’ll have fun with The Bitches of Brooklyn.

I love finding out what inspired an author to write their novel. Thank you, Rosemary, for sharing your story. I look forward to reading The Bitches of Brooklyn.

Tour Giveaway for Sparks The Matchmaker by Russell Elkins

Sparks the Matchmaker by Russell Elkins

Ollie just wants one thing. The girl.

Things haven’t been going so well with Anne lately, though; their relationship has become a perpetual study date, and Ollie’s roommates are starting to worry about him. How to fix things? Why, with a marriage proposal, of course.

Unfortunately for Ollie, his relationship with Anne has run out of gas. Life feels like it’s counting down to one. And that one is the only person in Ollie’s life he really cares about: Ollie. Perhaps, then, he should get over himself. But first he has to deal with Sparks, the irritating little Yankees fan who invades his life in order to “help” him. And while Keith, his best friend, is doing all he can to help, Ollie’s other friend Richie never fails to show up and threaten to ruin everything just by being himself. Never mind all the drama Sparks brings to the party by forcing Ollie to take a job actually helping people in need.

Will Ollie meet the girl? Will it be in history class? On a road trip to Colorado? Can he get over Anne, or should he try to mend the relationship? Should he pursue the new girl Sparks is trying to set him up with? As the strings of the puppeteer tangle with the strings of the heart, only one person can sort out the mess Ollie has made. It seems that the harder he tries, the more Ollie messes things up. Is Sparks a cruel manipulator, or is he really going to help Ollie find his match?

Praise for Sparks the Matchmaker:

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. How many “romance” novels do you read where the protagonist is male, or even where the author is male? At first, I thought that was going to be the unique focus of this story.

I was pleasantly surprised, though. The “Sparks” character was a completely unique take on things. Also, I tend to be one of those people who frequently predicts the endings of books and t.v. shows, etc., but I hadn’t seen the ending of this story coming. It was a quick and easy read (which was just what I needed right now) but with plenty of intelligence and creativity woven into the story. I think I can say with confidence that even my teenage son would enjoy it, as well as my Mom. Looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Definitely not what I expected from a romantic comedy novel, but in a good way! Can’t wait for the next one 🙂

EXCERPT

Ollie was in the process of packing some clean underwear into his bag when he heard Sparks’ voice from the doorway. “Joy still hasn’t broken up with her boyfriend. I thought she would have done it by now.”

“What?” Ollie was stunned. “Are you serious?”

“Relax. She’s a little harder to read than most people. I really thought she’d have dumped him by now.”

Ollie suspected Sparks was concealing something, but he couldn’t guess it. “That’s just great. I’m picking her up in a few minutes, man! And now I’ll have that looming over my head the whole weekend.”

“It’s not a big deal. Seriously. Not a big deal.”

“It is to me. Are you trying to tell me that you guessed wrong on that? I mean, that’s something that seems pretty pivotal and important. You seemed so sure before,” Ollie said.

“Yeah, I was. She’s just harder to read, that’s all. Nothing’s gonna change. Everything is still on track. The boyfriend won’t come into play at all… for the weekend, anyway.”

“Huh, it sounds like it’s going to make everything awkward.”

“Oh, I get it. You’re under the impression that you were gonna hit it off this weekend. But you’re not going to be doing any kissing or holding hands or gazing into each other’s eyes in soft moonlight. You won’t be doing anything but getting to know each other. You know, as friends will do?”

“What? Why didn’t you tell me that earlier? Sparks, you keep leading me into situations like this, and you don’t tell me anything. You like to keep me in the dark as much as you possibly can.”

Sparks looked at Ollie like he was missing something really obvious. “Listen. I’m not responsible for the things you imagine. I give you information you wouldn’t otherwise have, and I give it to you on a need- to- know basis. You need to be able to act spontaneously in order for everything to come out right. Besides,” he pushed his hat back on his head, “I don’t like to be wrong when I’m guessing stuff. I prefer to wait when I give answers… just in case things change.”

“I can’t tell you how reassuring that is.”

“You don’t have to accept my help, you know. I could go help someone else.”

Ollie took a deep breath and then let it out as a rumble in his throat. “Ah. You’re probably right anyway.”

HOW TO CREATE A SOCIAL NETWORK TO SUPPORT YOUR BOOKS, PART II of III

 When my publisher first told me that I should start blogging and social marketing a year before my book would be released, I didn’t understand the importance of that advice! Now, I do. After countless hours of marketing, networking, tweeting and emailing, I am starting to feel like my book is finally living and breathing!

Make sure you have the following– a blog (I would say a website as well, but I haven’t used mine that much even though I spent hrs. making it!) Twitter, Facebook, Google plus profile, Pinterest (on your blog you should have options to follow you with bloglovin’, GFC, Networked Blogs, posts via email and RSS feeds and Google Plus circles.)

Blogging tips- You don’t have to blog only about your book. In fact, you may not get many hits this way. Mix it up a bit. Blog about things you’re passionate about- things that people will connect with.I started blogging about cancer because it had taken my dad from me and it felt good to scream out to the web and get it out. I also started posting guest posts from other authors and interview. I would mix it up with excerpts and then reviews. I know I mentioned this before, but I can’t stress it enough. All of your social icons should be at the top of your blog or at least in the tops of your left and right sidebars! Link to other blogs. Create a blog button with HTML (Google how to do this if you need help) and trade with other like blogs.

Goodreads/Facebook/Google Plus/Twitter strategies: Every time you make a friend, or get a follower, thank them and ask them to check out your blog. Offer to follow them back if they follow you. Type out a generic response, something simple, like “Thanks for the friendship, please check out my blog if you have a moment and follow if interested.” “Thanks for following me! I’m following you back. Check out my blog when you have a moment!” Paste your responses in a Word document and keep it on your desktop. It will become your bible eventually. You can also use it to post all of your links, your bio, your book blurb, things that people ask for all the time to promote you on their blogs. If you do this consistently, your network will grow a little every day until it’s actually hard to keep up with all four sites!

Goodreads- Add your book to some Goodreads lists on Listopia and ask your friends to vote for your book! When you get a Goodreads review, good or bad, respond with a thank you and send them the link to the lists you’re on asking for their vote. When someone one adds your book to their TBR list, email them and keep them informed of promo offers.

Facebook- Create a page for your book that is separate from your profile page and start getting likes for it. Join author events where everyone trades likes. There are also tons of like ladder parties too. When you have an audience built up, create a Facebook event and pick random winners for prizes. Play games and tag people to come play. Invite all of your friends and ask them to invite theirs too. Need someone who knows the ins and outs of social marketing and can help you with your journey? Check out Aileen Aroma at https://www.facebook.com/aileen.aroma.1 She is an incredible support for me!

Twitter– Tweet your heart out and join Unfollowers.me to schedule Tweets when you’re away. Your Tweets should be eye catching. If it wouldn’t grab your attention in the slew of Tweets out there, then why would it grab someone else’s?

GFC- It’s like Facebook without the annoying ads and friend requests, or posting limitations. Try it!

About Author Jessica O’Gorek

I was born in Chesapeake, Virginia on April 19th, 1979. I was raised within the American Indian religion and was taught great respect for the earth and all its living beings. Powwows, sweat lodges, vision quests, you name it, I’ve done it. I was the weird kid who would confront kids on the playground in elementary school when they squished a bug. I would very sincerely tell them what they were doing was morally wrong and then I would pray for the bug to come back as a butterfly in its next life.

I grew up admiring my father, Barry Weinstock, as an author. He took me around the country to different places so he could research and write his Wilderness Survival books. One of his greatest works, “The Path of Power,” was written with a great medicine man, Sunbear. When I was twelve I started hand writing novels. My first one was two thousand pages. My dad always encouraged me and would rave about my writing. He gave me the confidence I needed to keep writing and follow my dream. My daughter, who is twelve, is currently working on her first novel. I hope to continue the legacy.

A great battle broke out, and Vituko’s anger shook the land and split it, creating a great Abyss between aenlu and Zohar, and aenlu became known as Talesri among the Chai. The Broken Land.

.

Taethza was thrown into the Abyss, but Stygian escaped. He took Karasi and fled to Talesri. Under Taethza’s influence, Stygian built an altar and sealed Karasi within it. The blood of the innocent would bathe Karasi for the next thousand or so years. To survive, Karasi crafted a large pearl to withdraw into and shield herself from the torment, and in doing so, joined her spirit to the pearl. She would not be free of it until she returned to Zohar. When Stygian’s rule finally ended, Karasi was released from her prison, but instead of returning home, she chose to remain to help rebuild the land and the nations. With the help of the merfolk and the Naajiso, she established the Perimeter to keep the Tainted One, Stygian, and their evil from crossing over again. She appointed the first Guardians and determined to teach them and guide them until the end of Nälu.

.

.

But for the last three hundred years, Karasi has been silent. She no longer appears before the Guardians, and her words are fading from the minds of the people. Rumors say she is dead, but the light still pulses from her pearl. Does her silence mean the end is near? Can a spirit being grow old and die? But the Guardians know one thing for certain, Karasi is aware of the growing apathy among the nations, of the evil gathering within the shadows. Taethza is stirring, but who will be her puppet this time?

Living life balanced between reality and dreams.
Writing as J. L. Mbewe, Jennette is an author, artist, mother, wife, but not always in that order. Born and raised in Minnesota, she now braves the heat of Texas, but pines for the Northern Lights and the lakes of home every autumn. She loves trying to capture the abstract and make it concrete. She has two short stories published in The Clockwork Dragon anthology, and is busily creating worlds inhabited by all sorts of fantasy creatures and characters, all questing about and discovering true love amid lots of peril. Her debut novel Secrets Kept and her short stories set in the world of Nälu: Desert Rose, Dragon Thief, and Indestructible are now available. She is currently living her second childhood with a wonderful husband and two precious children who don’t seem to mind her eclectic collections of rocks, shells, and books, among other things.
