Little Ballerina by Jane Blythe @jblytheauthor

.

Woo Hoo…another Jane Blythe novel in the Candella Sisters series is here. I want to introduce you to Naomi Candella in Little Ballerina.

Little Ballerina (Candella Sisters' Heroes, #3)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

She had dreamed of being a ballerina…until the fire that changed her life forever.

Three concussions in one year. It’s a good thing Naomi is hard headed. LOL Her shoulder was injured twice in the same year. Now, she can add being shot to that equation. No matter what, Naomi has to stay in motion.

Naomi and Sam had been childhood friends. As they grew up, he wanted more, but never pressed her. She was the one taking car of people, not them taking care of her. She is a member of Sam’s private security firm, Zeeke’s Private Investigations and Personal security, tough as nails, a warrior. She does get tired and it would be nice if she could relax, let someone take care of her for a change. Let’s see if Jane Blythe can make that happen. 🙂

How could her life get any worse? Being stalked. People around her are also in danger.

Jane Blythe shares her characters souls, their sense of failure, their guilt from something that was beyond their control. Ruth, her sister, lost herself to drugs, unable to kick the habit no matter how hard she tried guilt took her back to it. Naomi felt she had failed the family too, that she had to be tough, to be perfect.

The mystery, suspense and pacing builds, making it hard to stop for even a minute. I know it’s fiction, but sometimes it’s so easy to forget that, everything seems so real.

Though Little Ballerina is the end of the Candella Sisters Heroes series, Jane Blythe will keep us updated in the new Storybook Murders Trilogy.

GOODREADS BLURB

Sharing her dark secrets is the only way to save her life.

Naomi Candella has watched both her sisters find love in the last year but she knows there’s no happy ever after in her future. When an injury leaves her vulnerable and someone leaves a photo of her at a crime scene, her friend and boss steps in to play bodyguard. Problem is Sam is the one person who has the power to make her want what she cannot have, and having him staying in her home might just be the final straw that breaks her.

Samuel Zeeke has known Naomi since they were kids, she’s strong, tough, smart, everything he could want in a woman, but she also has walls as high as the heavens built around her. He’ll keep her safe, he’ll push her to give up her secrets to save her life, but he can’t push her into giving him a chance.

He doesn’t do soft or gentle, but for Naomi he’ll try, he’d do anything to keep her safe, but his best efforts might not be enough.

I’m fire, Damien’s ice – Hunted In The Dark by Scarlett West @iamscarlettwest

Hunted in the Dark (Fae Bureau of Investigation #2)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I am lovin’ the Fae Bureau of Investigation series by Scarlett West and seeing the first book, Stolen In The Dark ended with a cliffhanger, I had to jump on this. I wish I would have read straight through the three books I had and read it like one long book. There are five books in the series and I do recommend beginning at the beginning.

Adalee and Damien are like Romeo and Juliet, forbidden lovers. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the fate of the world is place don her shoulders. She will risk her very life…and that of those around her…to meet her destiny. She doesn’t know, nor understand, what is happening. She is still a novice when it comes to her magic, learning as the book progresses, growing, maturing. She doesn’t trust easily, but Novah and Ciara believe in her, as does Damien. Will she let down the wall she has built around herself? I do like that she doesn’t jump into bed with Damien and I was pleasantly surprised that she was a virgin. I find most characters in the paranormal/supernatural/fantasy world are loose.

The Fae feed off energy, using sex as a mechanism. They are not shy or prudish in any way. She fights her mated bond with Damien, which keeps her from reaching her full potential.

Since the murder of King Meynard, the FBI has become divided. They are fewer in numbers because of it, yet determined to solve the murders and kidnappings no matter how many roadblocks are placed in their way. Will the King’s death be the catalyst for war? Is that someone’s evil plan?

Action packed with danger and betrayal. Steamy with lost of sexual tension.

Intrigue and a cliffhanger. And for that reason, I will be reading Cursed In The Dark right now.

GOODREADS BLURB

He’s my boss, my fated mate, and my mortal enemy.

I’m fire, Damien’s ice. Our rival Fae clans hold a deepening grudge that could lead to war. I shouldn’t fall for him but he’s breaking down my walls, touching my heart. Yet learning to trust him has never been more brutal.

Since being promoted as a Special Agent, a dark force has shrouded the Winter Court and kidnappings of Fae people have become rampant. To make matters worse, someone killed our King.

And Damien is a prime suspect. With a murderer on the loose, I’m facing the worst battle: learn to trust Damien, or face Earth and Faery’s destruction.

Readers who enjoy Karen Marie Moning, Laurell K. Hamilton, Amelia Hutchins, and Lindsay Hall, will love this dangerous and sexy urban fantasy.

New Release Review – And There He Kept Her by Joshua Moehling #NetGalley @PPPress

And There He Kept Her

Amazon / Audiobook / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I found the characters for And There He Kept Her by Joshua Moehling very interesting, a gay policeman, a missing girl with diabetes…and what happens when two kids break into a man’s house to steal his prescription drugs….

Seems there are a lot of secrets for a small town. But, we all know, sooner or later, they will be exposed. In the meantime, some will do anything to protect themselves.

The clock is ticking and time is running out.

I love watching the characters as they walk through the pages, some worse than others. They remind me of how fragile live is. Is everyone either good or bad? I love villains that make me wonder…and we have many to choose from. The whys are intriguing. Nature or nurture seems to come up when dealing with drug addiction, murder, serial killers…

I didn’t take many notes as I read, but I will commend Joshua Moehling for a job well done for his first novel. I look forward to watching him grow and develop his writing. I foresee good things for him.

“A dark and complex mystery that will consume you, starring a protagonist who is equal parts quirky Milhone and steady Gamache.”—Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight

They thought he was a helpless old man. They were wrong.

When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake in search of prescription drugs, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he’s been keeping in his basement for more than two decades, and he’ll do anything to keep his past from being revealed. As he gets the upper hand on his tormentors, the lines blur between victim, abuser, and protector.

Personal tragedy has sent former police officer Ben Packard back to the small Minnesota town of Sandy Lake in search of a fresh start. Now a sheriff’s deputy, Packard is leading the investigation into the missing teens, motivated by a family connection. As clues dry up and time runs out to save them, Packard is forced to reveal his own secrets and dig deep to uncover the dark past of the place he now calls home.

Unrelentingly suspenseful and written with a piercing gaze into the dark depths of the human soul, And There He Kept Her is a thrilling page-turner that introduces readers to a complicated new hero and forces us to consider the true nature of evil.

Her Frozen Cry (Detective Amanda Steele #5)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Gainsville. Prince William County. Virginia. A solitary cabin. A woman…dead. Alone…In a locked room. Amanda is on the case and I have every confidence that she will get her man, or woman, whoever it may be.

This murder strikes too close to home. She knows the dead woman’s husband, though it has been many years since she last saw him. They had been friends.

Her partner, Trent, she keeps at a distance. She has no time for romance, if he is even interested. She has her adopted ten year old daughter, Zoe, who has her own story in a previous book, The Silent Witness, and her work.

So many suspects. Though the perpetrator was right in front of me, I didn’t see it. I followed the clues through the pages, going wherever Carolyn Arnold led me. It is never easy to solve one of her mysteries.

I think Amanda Steele is my favorite character of Carolyn Arnold’s. To say she is spread thin is to put it mildly, but she doesn’t neglect anyone, sharing her love with all those close to her. Will she find Mr Right? I don’t want to hurry you along, Carolyn, but she deserves a life partner.

You have a satisfied reader, Carolyn. I can hardly wait to see what you comes next.

GOODREADS BLURB

The moon shines through the open window, bathing the woman in pale light. Blood-red wine from a shattered glass soaks into the cream blanket beside her, and her dull eyes stare vacantly at the framed photograph in her hand.

When beautiful wife and mother Alicia Gordon is found dead in a remote woodland cabin, Detective Amanda Steele is shocked to discover that she knows the husband. Amanda hasn’t spoken to Tony since she lost the love of her own life seven years ago, and seeing tragedy tearing her old friend’s family apart brings back so many painful memories.

Alicia was alone when she died, but she was so young, and Amanda can’t help feeling suspicious. Then she discovers that Alicia’s sleep medication had been tampered with, slowly poisoning her over several days. Amanda wants to trust that the sorrow on Tony’s face is real, but the more she digs into his marriage, the more it seems that he had opportunity, and motive…

Interviewing one of Alicia’s old colleagues, Amanda is shaken to her core when the woman suddenly collapses in her arms, dying in seconds from a lethal dose of the same poison that killed Alicia. But what could link this woman to Tony?

With her partner blaming Amanda for not arresting Tony immediately, she needs to prove that he isn’t the killer, or accept that the second woman’s death could be on her hands. She’s running out of time and leads when she discovers threatening messages sent to both victims. It’s the final clue to unmasking the most twisted killer Amanda has ever come up against, and to stop them she’ll have to risk everything…

I would like to thank NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read and review The Woman In The LIbrary by Sulari Gentill.

The Woman in the Library

Amazon / Audiobook / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

“It’s part him, part me, part stuff I made up…The magic formula…”

And that is part of the reason I grabbed Sulari Gentill’s novel, The Woman In The Library. The other reasons, a library mystery, Boston, a town I have visited many times, and a murder. I love mystery/thrillers and I so wanted to love The Woman In The Library…but I found it was not for me.

I was confused about numerous things and the story never grabbed me. I was about a third of the way through and started skimming. I do not like to DNF books. I know authors put their blood, sweat, and tears into their work, so I always want to finish. It was a good thing that at 53% my curiosity arose. I wanted to know, who is the murderer. I thought of skipping to the end to find out, but held back.

Not every book works for me and I am sure that is the same for you and just because The Woman In The Library by Sulari Gentill was not my cup of tea, that doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.

GOODREADS BLURB

In every person’s story, there is something to hide…

The ornate reading room at the Boston Public Library is quiet, until the tranquility is shattered by a woman’s terrified scream. Security guards take charge immediately, instructing everyone inside to stay put until the threat is identified and contained. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers, who’d happened to sit at the same table, pass the time in conversation and friendships are struck. Each has his or her own reasons for being in the reading room that morning—it just happens that one is a murderer.

Award-winning author Sulari Gentill delivers a sharply thrilling read with The Woman in the Library, an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure that examines the complicated nature of friendship and shows us that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all.

ABOUT SULARI GENTILL

Once upon a time, Sulari Gentill was a corporate lawyer serving as a director on public boards, with only a vague disquiet that there was something else she was meant to do. That feeling did not go away until she began to write. And so Sulari became the author of the Rowland Sinclair Mysteries: thus far, ten historical crime novels chronicling the life and adventures of her 1930s Australian gentleman artist, the Hero Trilogy, based on the myths and epics of the ancient world, and the Ned Kelly Award winning Crossing the Lines (published in the US as After She Wrote Hime). In 2014 she collaborated with National Gallery of Victoria to write a short story which was produced in audio to feature in the Fashion Detective Exhibition, and thereafter published by the NGV. IN 2019 Sulari was part of a 4-member delegation of Australian crime writers sponsored by the Australia Council to tour the US as ambassadors of Australian Crime Writing.

Sulari lives with her husband, Michael, and their boys, Edmund and Atticus, on a small farm in Batlow where she grows French Black Truffles and refers to her writing as “work” so that no one will suggest she get a real job.

The Art Of Fear (The Little Things That Kill, Book I) by Pamela Crane @MentalMommyPam

.

I have read a few books by Pamela Crane and loved them, so I am happy to share The Art of Fear. I LOVE the creepy cover and…well, you’ll have to scroll down to get my thoughts about the story. BUT, how about that cover? What are your thoughts? Does it make you want to read it, or run screaming? LOL

The Art of Fear (The Little Things That Kill, #1)

Amazon / Audiobook / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

WOW! I am speechless.

WARNING: Human trafficking and all the ugliness that goes with it.

Luckily for you, I’m a master of The Art Of Fear

The Art Of Fear has a morbid start and I love that Pamela Crane makes dishing out the crazy look so easy. She paints vivid pictures with her words. They flow at a pace that makes it impossible for me to stop. I have an urgent need to know…

I am only at 27%, but the villain is terrifying, and what’s more, I know there are real people like the villain walking among us. Next time you’re out, look around you…

Ari and Tina are complicated characters, as are those that surround them. Ari and Tina are suspicious, guarded, wanting answers and wanting something to give them a reason to go on. I am curious about Tristan and have my fingers crossed that he won’t be a bad guy. Ari deserves to have something good in her life. Children, betrayed by those who were supposed to love and protect them. I urge you to discover them for yourself.

There is so much going on, my head spins, I am confused. I found myself reading until my eyes crossed, because I had to know. White knuckled, heart pounding, emotions running riot. Intense, edge of your seat suspense. Great job, Pamela, keeping me guessing until the end. When I was done, I felt like I’d been ‘put through the wringer’, as my mother used to say…and I WANT MORE!

A life no girl should endure. A father no daughter could love. A twist no one would predict.

From USA Today best-selling author Pamela Crane comes a terrifying tale of small-town secrets and murder.

Ari Wilburn’s life ended long ago—the day she watched her little sister die in a tragic accident and did nothing to stop it. Crippled with self-blame and resented by her parents, she stumbles through life … and onto an unexpected clue that casts doubt on whether the death was accidental.

Now a psychological wreck, Ari joins a suicide support group where she meets Tina, a sex-enslaved escapee who finds her long-lost father dead. Suicide, police ruled it. But Tina suspects foul play. As a bond develops between the women in their shared loss, they’re dragged into playing a dangerous game with a killer.

A serial killer with a deadly message.

Faced with a murderous wake-up call and two possibly linked deaths, Ari’s investigation puts her next on the killer’s list. But she’s never been one to back down from a fight.

Little Hearts by Jane Blythe @jblytheauthor

.

Little Hearts (Candella Sisters' Heroes, #2)

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Okay, let’s start with an introduction: This is the second story of the Candella Sisters and it is time to meet Agape “Aggie” Candella and her romantic interest Nickolas “Nick” Sleigh. It’s best to read the series in order, even when each book can stand alone.

Aggie felt she was being paranoid, put the feeling she was being watched lingered.

Thinking this was too easy and predictable, I was watching for Jane Blythe to twist and turn the story to a place I didn’t see coming. She is good at that, which is why I love her novels so much and eagerly grab each one, waiting to be delighted by the trials and tribulations she will put her characters through.

Agape means love in Greek. It fits her perfectly, since all she really wants is her happy ever after, her knight in shining armor, her white picket fence. She is naive, trusting, easy prey. She would find a guy she liked, become obsessive and drive him away. We have met her family before…and her two sisters. Though they look like triplets, they all have a different mother.

Nick had learned early on to never let emotions rule him, don’t get attached. He rarely laughed or smiled….until Aggie. Her sweetness, innocence and strength was quick to entrance him, and he will protect her at all costs.

Romantic suspense is my comfort zone. My adrenaline rises, yet I feel wrapped in a warm snuggly embrace. I am just a rider, a spectator in Jane Blythe’s characters lives. I don’t know how she continually comes up with new ways to stress me (LOL), to amaze me, to keep me reading on, but I am grateful for having found her. Soooooo, thanks so much, Jane, for the many hours, days, weeks, months, and years of fabulous entertainment. You keep writing, I’ll keep reading.

She thinks he’s her hero but he’s lying to her.

Agape Candella has been obsessed with finding love for as long as she can remember, unfortunately there has been a lot of heartache along the way. When a sexy stranger saves her from a mugging she knows that this time she’s found the real thing. No more broken hearts for her.

Nickolas Sleigh thought it would be easy. Make contact, use the woman, get what he needed, and then be out of there. Falling for her was never part of the plan. Now he’s trapped between his rapidly growing feelings for the sweet Aggie, who wears her heart on her sleeve, and the reality that his own heart is black, and that he’s going to lose her forever once she finds out the truth.

Losing her also means losing his only chance at stopping a dangerous killer who soon has Aggie in his sights.

Horror Library, Volume 7 by Eric J Guignard @ericjguignard

.

I had read another book, Professor Charlatan Bardot’s Travel Anthology to the Most (Fictional) Haunted Buildings in the Weird, Wild World by Eric J Guignard and really enjoyed it, so when given the opportunity to read and review another work, Horror Library, Volume 7 by Eric, I hopped on it.

Besides that, I couldn’t resist the fabulously creepy cover.

Horror Library, Volume 7

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

First off, I want to tell you about the special guests gallery of horror(ible) images by Allen Koszowski included in the anthology. His first published piece was in 1973 and he is still going strong.

Horror Library, Volume 7 by Eric J Guignard includes 30 original short stories. We have plenty of thrills and creepiness. These leaders of the macabre with take you down a dark path…and I hope you return…wanting more. Some authors were familiar and others were new to me, but they all contributed something that gave me chills, leading me on to the next one and the next one and the next one.

The great thing about short stories is you can finish them while waiting…whether in line at the drug store, waiting in the doctor’s office, or just having a minute or two to spare. Whether you like to read your horror in the light of day or in the dark, be wary. You may get more than you bargained for.

The Scream Of Silence by Pamela Crane @MentalMommyPam

The Scream of Silence (The Little Things That Kill, #0.5)

MY REVIEW

Pamela Crane’s damaged characters do surprising things that do hold my attention. She has packed a lot into this small package that caught me off guard, because I was sure I knew what was coming…and I was so far off. I am happy that I have the next book, The Art of Fear, hanging around my Kindle, though The Scream of Silence is a complete short story that can stand alone. I wonder…will you be teased by it and desire more? I sure did.

GOODREADS BLURB

In this riveting prequel to international best-selling author Pamela Crane’s The Little Things That Kill Series, “The Scream of Silence” unravels the darkest depths of human nature. A chilling tale consumed in under an hour, but not so quickly digested.

She had secretly wanted the baby to die, but Fate never sided with her until twenty-three years later, when Destiny Childs got her wish.

Broken, middle-aged Destiny daily struggles to survive her haunting past. Dead parents. Unplanned teen pregnancy. Cyclic addiction and depression. Life hasn’t treated her kindly. Then one day she sees the name of her castaway daughter on the news: a victim of murder.

Seeing this as an opportunity to extort the rich family her daughter left behind, Destiny crafts a plan. But as all her plans go, it loosens a mess of secrets long buried, along with the truth behind the killing.

In this haunting murder mystery short story, discover the gruesomely intimate stranger harbored within Destiny… and who may lurk within any one of us.

“The Scream of Silence” originally appeared in Reader’s Circle of Avenue Park’s “Crooked Tales” anthology but is now published for the first time as a standalone short story.

ABOUT PAMELA CRANE

Pamela Crane

PAMELA CRANE is a USA TODAY best-selling author and professional juggler. Not one who can toss flaming torches in the air, but a juggler of four kids, a writing addiction, and a horse rescuer. She lives on the edge (her Arabian horse can tell you about their wild adventures while trying to train him) and she writes on the edge…where her sanity resides. Her thrillers unravel flawed women who aren’t always pretty. In fact, her characters are rarely pretty, which makes them interesting…and perfect for doing crazy things worth writing about. When she’s not cleaning horse stalls or changing diapers, she’s psychoanalyzing others.
