Review – Woman Missing by A B Whelan #womanmissing #abwhelan

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

I have read some of A B Whelan’s work and loved it, so when I had a chance to grab the ARC for Woman Missing, I jumped all over it. I love the gorgeous cover that pops off the page, and it definitely fits the story inside.

The two main characters are Susan Keller and Ethan Morro and the story is shared from their points of view.

Susan Keller had spent her life taking care of her husband and two children. But what about her? She has lost herself and her identity. What would it be like to start over? To be free? How about a hot week on Catalina Island with the girls and, maybe, find out?

With Ethan, each violent occurrence takes him a step further into darkness. How long will he be able to keep his secrets? How long will he be able to control his urges?

The story starts off a bit slow, laying the ground work as it moves along. I was lulled into a sense of complacency and I know A B Whelan won’t let me stay that way. A subtle sense of anticipation slowly rises. The suspense grows and it isn’t long before I am off and running, flipping pages with a sense of urgency.

A B Whelan is good about throwing some twists and turns into the mix and I loved the ending. Well done!

4 Stars

Review – The Girl Upstairs by Jessica R Patch @jessicarpatch #jessicarpatch #thegirlupstairs

Amazon / Goodreads

I am still amazed that I only recently came across Jessica R Patch. She is a prolific writer and her books fit in perfectly on my book shelf. She has now become an automatic read whenever I see one of her books available.

Gwen McDaniel’s life is a mess, so, WTH, why not buy a rundown house in Cold Harbor, Maine…that is in dire need of a renovation? Their marriage could use an overhaul too. Immediately we are drawn in to drafty rooms and music playing, yet no one is there.

I was immersed in the ominous mystery. The pacing kept the suspense rising, the further into the book I got. The twists and turns gave me many aha moments, sometimes wondering why I didn’t see that coming. That is how good Jessica R Patch’s stories are. She sneaks those nuggets of emotional turmoil below the obvious, amazing me as she delivers blow after blow to Gwen. The danger rises and there are those who will do anything to stop the secrets being exposed. I didn’t know whether to race through the pages to find out what happens, or relax and enjoy the journey.

Many thanks go out to NetGalley, Harlequin, and Jessica R Patch for the opportunity to read The Girl Upstairs.

he bought this house to save her marriage. Unearthing its secrets might just claim her life.

Gwen McDaniel’s life is broken. But she knows the perfect place to fix it. Cold Harbor, Maine, an idyllic small town with views of Acadia National Park, is where she used to vacation with her parents as a child. Here, she and Steven can start over, renovating their cliff-side fixer-upper while patching up their marriage. Soon, everything will be better.

Except from the moment they arrive, Gwen sees and hears things, and it’s more than just the drafts and shadows that are part of any old house. Steven downplays her fears, warning her not to fixate on problems as she has in the past. But Gwen spent years as a homicide detective, and her instincts don’t lie. Something happened here. Proof comes when she rips up the attic’s carpet to discover a chilling message carved into the wood underneath.

As Gwen delves into the history of the house and the Cold Harbor community, she begins to piece the fragments together. And gradually, a terrifying picture A missing girl. A house of horrors. And a dark, decades-old nightmare that is more haunting than Gwen ever imagined…

Review – Damaged: Life. Death. Memory. Uncertainty @MichaelGeczi #damaged

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

I have read some of Michael Geczi’s work and enjoyed his stories very much, so I was excited to get a glimpse of his new novel, Damaged: Life. Death. Memory. Uncertainty.

Shay Landon, a former Special Agent In Charge of the Minneapolis Field Office had been on leave for nine months, following the death of his partner. People had told Jacoby Overton, the new Special Agent In Charge, that Shay had a talent for seeing things others didn’t, so he was hoping his return to work would be fortuitous.

Michael Geczi delves into some difficult issues. The mind is a complex organ and it works hard to protect itself. Shay Landon will find himself in some uncertain situations. Can he trust that his memories are true? He works hard to hide the issues that are plaguing him. I was right there at his side as he struggles….

I’m not sure how I thought the story would end, but I didn’t see that coming. In hindsight, it seems obvious and that’s all I’m saying. Well done, Michael.

My thanks go out to Michael Geczi for the opportunity to review Damaged: Life. Death. Memory. Uncertainty.

“Damaged.” Life. Death. Memory. Uncertainty.

Perfect for fans of Dennis Lehane and Tana French.

Shay Landon, former SAC at the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office, has wrapped up nine months of mandatory leave following the death of his former partner and Assistant Special Agent in Charge.

In theory, time well spent on counseling, rest, and confronting discrepancies in his recollections of the death of his colleague, compared with the official record. In reality, trapped in therapy, lying to his doctors and his wife, second‑guessed by the Bureau, and haunted by a version of events no one else seems to share.

Today is scheduled to be his first day back at the office – not as the boss any longer, but in a special consulting role. No gun, no command, no field work. Just “analysis.” He kisses his wife, Cara, goodbye, heads into the dark garage to get in his car, and readies himself for his new beginning.

It’s too soon, however. He’s not ready. The world has tilted.

And there are mirrors everywhere reflecting back on him.

Review – The Handyman By Britney King @britneyking_ #thehandyman #hotbananapress

The Handyman: A Psychological Thriller by Britney King

Amazon / Goodreads

The excellent cover of The Handyman by Britney King sure fits the story inside. I have read a lot of Britney King’s work and she can spin a psychological tale that makes your head spin, wondering who is who and what is what. I gladly hopped onto the crazy train.

Marin makes a drastic and dark decision when she finds out her boyfriend doesn’t love her any more and has been cheating on her. She believes she can change his mind. She kidnaps him, taking him out to the country and locking him in her basement, telling everyone he is ill.

Luke, a fixer, caught me off guard. He uses his hammer for more than hitting a nail on the head.

Alternately between Marin and Luke’s points of view, the story unfolds at a rapid pace.

If you are like me, once you get lost in The Handyman by Britney King, you won’t be able to stop reading. Gripping. Riveting. Jaw dropping surprises that are sure to leave you guessing….how will the story end. Mind officially blown.

I want to thank Britney King and Hot Banana Press for the opportunity to review The Handyman.

4 Stars

From bestselling author Britney King comes a hypnotic and terrifying psychological thriller about a man held hostage in a remote location by the “love of his life”—aka the woman he refuses to marry.

    She only wants one thing:
for him to love her the way he used to.

When her boyfriend hesitates to propose—and then cheats instead of leaving—she decides the relationship needs structure. Space. Consequences. A reset. Retreating to an isolated house in the countryside feels like the responsible choice. A place where distractions disappear and commitment can finally take root.

He doesn’t see it that way.

    At least not at first.

To the outside world, the man in her basement is her ill husband—too fragile for one of those homes, she explains. She’s devoted. Patient. Doing the work. No one asks too many questions.

    Enter Luke.

    Luke fixes problems.

Not the kind you call the police about.

The kind people quietly hope someone else will handle.

When he takes a job renovating an isolated country house, he knows something is wrong immediately. The work requests are about privacy, sound, containment. The woman who hired him is calm, polite, and lying badly.

    He doesn’t intervene.

As Luke works, he watches her devotion harden into something stranger—and far more interesting. When he realizes her plan is flawed, he doesn’t stop it. He improves it. Suggests a way to make her boyfriend jealous. Engaged. Afraid of losing her.

    It works.

What begins as an experiment turns into alignment. What looks like obsession becomes efficiency. And as lines are crossed—quietly, rationally—Luke understands the truth before she does:

Some relationships aren’t meant to be saved.

    They’re meant to be replaced.

Darkly funny, unsettling, and compulsively readable, The Handyman is a psychological thriller about love, control, and what happens when the wrong person decides to help. Perfect for fans of You, Misery, and The Housemaid, this is a story that dares you to root for the solution—even when you know it’s wrong.

    • Genre: Fiction, Noir Crime, Psychological Thriller, Suspense, Thriller

Britney King lives in Austin, Texas with her husband, children, a dog named Gatsby, one ridiculous cat, and a partridge in a peach tree.

When she’s not wrangling the things mentioned above, she writes psychological, domestic and romantic thrillers set in suburbia.

Without a doubt, she thinks connecting with readers is the best part of this gig. You can find Britney online here:

    Amazon / Goodreads

Unable to force her eyes open any longer, the world in front of her went black.

WOW! What an opening. Peggy Jaeger hit hard and never let up.

What a fabulous cover and the title is spot on for Retribution by Peggy Jaeger.

Tucker Petrie is the star of the SPCD – the Sexual Predators Of Children Profilers. Six teenage girls were kidnapped, brutalized, and murdered in the Washngton DC are and Tucker is on the job, but, he will need help. He sent the Petrie Posse to approach his last partner and retired profiler, Kella O’Brien.

Tucker and Kella have known each other since she was twelve years old. They are best friends, but Kella had made a life of her own and left the dangerous world of the FBI behind. But, when she got all the details, she couldn’t say no.

The writing flows smoothly, even though the tragic story made me stumble at times. Sure, some moments were predictable, but I felt they were necessary to keep the story moving forward. The danger and cruelty that comes from the villain, leaves nothing to the imagination. At times I found myself holding my breath, devouring the words as fast as I can. The suspense was off the charts.

Retribution by Peggy Jaeger is not for the faint of heart, so brace yourself and dive into this unputdownable psychological thriller.

Do You Want To Play A Game – Sara’s Game by Ernie Lindsey @Ernie_Lindsey

    Amazon / Audiobook / Goodreads

I snatched Sara’ Game by Ernie Lindsey on a free day on 10.23.23. The cover talked to me and I am a sucker for a great cover. This psychological thriller is sure to mess with your mind.

    The question of the day:

Are you ready to play the game?

Sara Winthrop has tragedy hanging over her head. First her husband goes missing, then her three children. What the hell is going on and why is she a target for such wickedness. Two years ago, Sara’s husband left for the gym one morning…and never came back. His car was found. He wasn’t. Unbelievably, the police report said, “No foul play suspected.” There were a few unreliable sightings over the following months, but little else.

Now, on the last day before summer break, her three children have gone missing from their schools, all at the same time.

And the note under her windshield wiper asks one simple question: Are you ready to play the game?

    Dark And Disturbing – Review – You Did Nothing Wrong by C G Drews @PaperFury #netgalley #youdidnothingwrong

You Did Nothing Wrong by C G Drews is up for preorder with a 3.17.26 publication date.

    Amazon / Goodreads

OMG, I’ve found another must read author in C G Drews. His novel, You Did Nothing Wrong is psychologically horrific and I loved every minute of it. It was a definite mind fuck and I couldn’t put it down. I was drawn deeper and deeper in Elodie’s life. Nothing was as it seemed to me. Sure, Jude was her autistic son, but…there is so much more going on.

None of the characters are who I thought they were. Their actions are jolting, sure to up the creep factor, building and growing more and more intense, more savage, more ferocious.

Being inside Elodie’s head is not for the faint of heart. Sure, I may have had similar thoughts, but never took them to the extreme she does. Her life has been tough, and it brings to mind the whole nature nurture topic. Though it doesn’t excuse her actions.

I feel confident in saying that you won’t see the end coming. I love, love, love it, and I will be adding more of C G Drew’s books to my reading list. I you love horror with deep psychological twists and a house that may or may not be haunted, you’ll love You Did Nothing Wrong. By the way, that is a great and deceiving title, as is the cover.

I want to thank NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review You Did Nothing Wrong.

A relentless, horror-inducing psychological suspense for fans of The Push and Baby Teeth by New York Times bestselling author CG Drews.

Single mother Elodie’s life has become a fairy tale. She’s met Bren, equal parts golden-retriever devoted and sinfully handsome. He’s whisked her and her autistic son, Jude, to the crumbling family house he’s renovating. She has a new husband, a new house, and a new baby on the way. Everything is perfect.

Then Jude claims he can hear voices in the walls. He says their renovations are “hurting” the house. Even Elodie can’t ignore it–something strange is going on. The question is, is it with the house, or with her son?

Then the one secret Elodie has been hiding is revealed, and no one is safe anymore.

A pulse-pounding, clever take on the haunted house novel, You Did Nothing Wrong examines the complexities of motherhood and the twisted bonds of family as it races to its shocking ending.

    THE GIRL IN THE MAZE

    by R. K. Jackson

    August 25 – September 19, 2025 Virtual Book Tour

    Synopsis:

USA TODAY BESTSELLER • Perfect for fans of Alice Feeney, Megan Miranda, and Tana French, R. K. Jackson’s lyrical, twisty psychological thriller follows an aspiring journalist as she uncovers dark truths in a seaswept Southern town—aided by a mysterious outcast and pursued by a ruthless killer.

Now available for the first time as an audiobook, this lyrical novel comes alive in a tour de force performance by narrator Hillary Huber.

When Martha Covington moves to Amberleen, Georgia, after her release from a psychiatric ward, she thinks her breakdown is behind her. A small town with a rich history, Amberleen feels like a fresh start. Taking a summer internship with the local historical society, Martha is tasked with gathering the stories of the Geechee residents of nearby Shell Heap Island, the descendants of slaves who have lived by their own traditions for the last three hundred years.

As Martha delves into her work, the voices she thought she left behind start whispering again, and she begins to doubt her recovery. When a grisly murder occurs, Martha finds herself at the center of a perfect storm—and she’s the perfect suspect. Without a soul to vouch for her innocence or her sanity, Martha disappears into the wilderness, battling the pull of madness and struggling to piece together a supernatural puzzle of age-old resentments, broken promises, and cold-blooded murder. She finds an unexpected ally in a handsome young man fighting his own battles. With his help, Martha journeys through a terrifying labyrinth—to find the truth and clear her name, if she can survive to tell the tale.

    Prologue

    She wants to kill you.

Martha’s fingers tightened onto the Pentel No. 2 pencil, clutched in her lap like a secret talisman. Dr. Ellijay picked up the stack of test booklets, squared them on her desk with soft raps, and began handing them out. She walked slowly down the aisle, her heels popping on the linoleum.

Not today, Martha thought. Please, Lenny, not today.

Outside the casement windows, the campus was awash in gray, a silent movie, as it had been for days, suspended between fog and drizzle, the dull light suppressing shadows, flattening the neo-Gothic buildings of Ponce de Leon College like a plywood set. Only two o’clock, but outside looked more like dusk.

The quad was empty, except for a lone figure seated on a bench, a man in a tweed blazer taking notes in a composition book. He looked up in Martha’s direction, then down at the notebook, then toward her again. To escape his gaze, she looked elsewhere, beyond the campus buildings, above the crenellated rooflines.

It was there again. She had seen it before, on bad days, and now it stretched across the buildings, high above the spires and turrets, gelatinous and nearly invisible except for a network of threadlike capillaries. It pulsed and it heaved, breathing, alive.

Don’t look at it, Lovie. Lenny murmured in her ear, his voice moist and intimate. You know they don’t want you to see that, right? Just pretend you don’t see it.

Today Lenny was only a voice, but on some days she could see him. He was tall and gaunt, his skin white and mottled, like the belly of a toad. Spiked hair. Blue jeans shiny with stains. Canvas sneakers, gray and frayed.

Martha felt a touch on her shoulder, jerked around.

“Relax, Martha.” Wade leaned forward in the desk behind her. “You look as tight as a piano wire. You’ll do great.”

You won’t do great. You’ll die. Lenny hissed. S’truth. You’ll die if you even touch the paper.

This was the first time Wade had spoken to her in months. In the early weeks of the semester, he had flirted with her, singled her out for special attention. For a while, the attraction had been mutual. She liked his pug nose, his subversive sense of humor. But that was before.

Dr. Ellijay walked to the end of the next aisle, Martha’s aisle.

Have a look out, Lovie. ’Ere it comes.

Martha tried to concentrate, to review her mental notes. This was the final. Her grades had been floundering—that’s all part of the plan, innit?—but Martha had decided she would overcome the plan. She wouldn’t let them win.

Don’t touch the paper, Lenny rasped. It’s printed with poison ink. It’s like them colorful frogs in Ecuador. We learned about that in Biology 101, remember? Beautiful, but lethal. If you touch the ink, you’ll die.

Dr. Ellijay returned to her desk at the front of the room and glanced at her wristwatch. “All right, you have forty-five minutes,” she told the class. “You may begin now. Good luck.”

Look at ’er. She’s watchin’ you. She wants to see you fail. Touch the frog poison, and you’ll die. Look out the window. The man on the bench, he’s watchin’, too. They’re all watchin’. They’ve all been waitin’ for this moment, doncha see?

Martha stared at the page, paralyzed. She felt a drop of perspiration release from her armpit and crawl down her side. Around her, she heard the frantic scratching of her fellow students’ pens. They mingled with the sounds of the rats in the walls, the ones that chewed at the masonry with their sharp teeth, like yellow rice grains. The other students acted as if the rats weren’t there.

She glanced at the clock. Six minutes gone already. She looked down at the paper and tried to focus, to form the answers in her mind.

If you fall for it—don’t say I din’t warn you, Lovie.

She wanted to cry, or to scream, but she was motionless except for the pounding of her heart.

Don’t react. Don’t let ’em know. Don’t let ’em on to you, right? That’s the worst thing.

She heard Dr. Ellijay’s footsteps approach and stop next to her desk. She didn’t look up.

“Martha? It’s been ten minutes, and you haven’t even started. Are you all right?”

A swarm of ghostly, amoeba shapes floated in front of Martha’s eyes, and she felt as if her head would explode.

“Martha?” Dr. Ellijay placed a hand on her shoulder.

Martha screamed and lunged out of her seat, pushing the desk over, causing books to tumble out.

Run. It’s yer only chance—run like hellfire.

She bounded up the aisle, reached the door, and flung it open with a bang.

    Run, Lovie.

In the hallway, Martha collided with a student on his cellphone, texting. She turned the corner onto another hallway and spotted the door to the custodial closet. She tried the knob. It opened. She slipped inside, squeezed next to a plastic mop bucket with rubber wheels, pulled the door closed, and slid to the floor.

In the darkness, she could smell ammonia. She heard the rats scurry around her. One brushed against her ankle, another along the back of her neck. Out in the hallway, footsteps approaching.

Voices calling her name. But Martha remained silent, invisible.

This is one thing we’re good at, hey, Lovie? Lenny said. We know how to vanish.

    Chapter 1

    Ten months later

Martha sat on an iron bench in front of the Wash-and-Fold and watched a column of ants as they marched away carrying crumbs from the smashed corner of a ham sandwich.

She had made the walk from the Pritchett House to Tobias Avenue in only fifteen minutes, strolling past dew-damp lawns and sprinklers, reaching the business district early. Nothing to do now but wait and watch the town slowly wake up. The morning was hazy, already humid. The rising sun painted sharp, expanding triangles of yellow on the buildings and storefronts.

Martha opened her leather satchel and unfolded the advertisement, the one Vince found on the bulletin board at the Gateway Center. She reread it for the hundredth time.

She felt restless, considered moving to the local diner for a cup of coffee, then scrapped the idea. Like so many things, caffeine was no longer admissible.

She wished she’d brought a book to read, or maybe a newspaper. Anything to take her mind off the fluttery feeling in her gut, a sensation that took hold yesterday when the Trailways bus crossed the Intracoastal Waterway and rolled past that sign in the grass median:

Welcome to Amberleen. Spacious Oaks, Friendly Folks.

Martha held the leather satchel close to her face and sniffed. The smell calmed her. It reminded her of her father, who kept it bulging with papers as he shuttled between their house and the university. She tilted the satchel and heard a faint rattle from within, a secret sound. The part of herself she would keep hidden.

A Lincoln Continental pulled up in front of the brick building across the street and parked. A tall woman with white hair and an old-fashioned, collared dress got out, unlocked the glass door to the building, and entered. Martha checked her watch—eight fifteen. She took out a mirror, freshened her lip gloss, and brushed a few strands of loose hair from her face. It was time.
