Dark Fantasy – Lies Among Gods by Johnna Dee #johnnadee #liesamonggods #netgalley

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

In Lyra Nymphaea’s world, everything revolves around which God you worship. The problem Lyra has, no God has chosen her. She has lost the respect of her family and friends, and is dumped by her boyfriend. She finds out why no God will choose her, that upon her death she will become a Goddess.

There’s a prophecy. In order for her to become a goddess, she will be sent to Aetherfall and will have to pass three trials to earn her place among the gods.

Lyra finds herself pursued by two gods. One is grumpy and standoffish, the other is confident, flamboyant, a Casanova. It didn’t take much for me to figure out which one she would choose.

I love stories about gods and goddesses, especially when the good blends in with the bad and the ugly. It took a while for me to get into the story. To lay the foundation that there were many details that slowed the pacing at times. As I grew to know the characters, I got more involved and the pace picked up and so did my need to know what would happen next.

All in all, Lies Among Gods by Johnna Dee was highly entertaining and well worth recommending. So, if you love gods and goddesses, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and a fantasy filled with highs and lows, you can’t go wrong with Lies Among Gods.

4 Stars

Imagine living in a world where all the gods were true. What if you had to apply to worship the gods?

In Lyra Nymphaea’s world, your whole life is based on what God you worship – your job, your relationship, friends, etc. All her life, she had not belonged. She had applied and denied to all deities, except for one. She couldn’t hold down a steady job. Her dating life was trash. People she used to be friends with distanced themselves from her. Because nobody wants to be around somebody who has no God and worships nothing. She applies to the last God in some desperate attempt to find some place to belong, only to be denied again. Then she finds out why…

Upon her death, she will be a goddess and she is supposed to live a life of strife to teach her some form of humility.
Now she is being pursued by two gods. Which will she choose?

Chilling – Little Brother by Adam Cosco #adamcosco #littlebrother #booksirens

Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

Little Brother is a quick read at 178 pages, but what it lacks in pages, it makes up for in chills and thrills. Twelve year old Leslie Adams is found standing over the dead body of a young boy. Everyone thinks she did it, but she can’t remember anything. After years spent in an institution, she’s released and heads off to college. Visions and horrors haunt her. She awakes to find bruises and cuts. Could she be self harming….or is the more to the story?

Of course there is!

Adam Cosco had me twisting and turning as I tried to figure out WTH is going on. I loved traveling a winding road that brought me up short when I reached the end. Well done, Adam. I look forward to reading more of your work.

My thanks go out to Adam Cosco for the opportunity to share my thoughts of his novella, Little Brother.

4 Stars

Twelve-year-old Leslie Adams is found covered in blood, standing over the lifeless body of a boy named Tommy. Everyone said she did it—after all, she was the only one there when he died. The most terrifying part? Leslie doesn’t remember a thing.

Years later, she still can’t escape the shadow of that day. Now in college, Leslie is desperate for a fresh start… until the blackouts return. Night after night, she wakes from these fugue states with fresh bruises and unexplained cuts on her skin. Doctors insist she’s self-harming—coping with repressed trauma. But deep down, Leslie knows something far more sinister is at play.

Disturbing visions begin to haunt echoes of childish laughter in empty rooms, the silhouette of a familiar little boy lingering just out of sight. Leslie fears the horror that claimed Tommy never really left. With each missing moment, the darkness inside her grows—stronger, bolder.

And when the truth finally claws its way to the surface, Leslie must confront a reality more terrifying than any childhood nightmare. Because the real horror isn’t what she might have done back then… it’s what’s been hiding inside her.

4 Stars

What happens when 12 storytellers unleash their darkest visions? You don’t just read it. You experience it. ‘Echoes of the Forgotten’ is a multi-author series that will stay with you long after the final page. 12 Authors. 12 Books. Zero escape.

Web of Malevolence

Winter, 1971. Grief drives teenager Michael Tedesco into exile—straight into the arms of a grandfather he barely knows, hidden deep within the sun-bleached isolation of the Florida Keys. At first glance, the island feels like paradise. But paradise has a memory. The locals watch too closely. Speak too little. And when they do speak, it’s only in hushed warnings—stories of Naia Tomes, a witch who once stalked the island… a woman said to have fed on human flesh before the newcomers put her down. Buried. Forgotten. Or so they claim. Because something is stirring again. The wind carries whispers that shouldn’t exist. Shadows linger where nothing should stand. And Michael begins to realize the truth the island has been Naia Tomes is not finished. As the past claws its way back into the present, Michael is pulled deeper into a suffocating nightmare—one woven from secrets, superstition, and blood. The kind of horror that doesn’t just haunt you… It waits for you. And on this island, revenge is not a story. It’s a ritual.

There’s more waiting in the Echoes of the Forgotten collection—each one steeped in its own brand of darkness. Don’t stop here… there are more folk horrors to satisfy your appetite. Be certain to read all the pulse pounding nightmares in the collection.

Humorous Mystery – Murder By Design by Lee Goldberg #netgalley #leegoldberg #murderbydesign

    Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

Murder By Design by Lee Goldberg is a new series starring Edison Bixby. He has a traumatic brain injury that causes him to be impulsively rude. He’s also wealthy and handsome, so maybe that gives him a little leeway. Wally, an actor, is hired to keep him out of trouble.

Murder By Design is a different kind of mystery, and includes some laughs along the way. Sometimes a tongue in cheek book like this works for me, other times, not so much. I guess it depends on what kind of mood I’m in. I did enjoy the mystery and the ending was marvelous. I never saw that coming and I am always up for a good surprise.

My thanks go out to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to share Murder By Design by Lee Goldberg.

    3 Stars

In a world carefully constructed for murder, solving crimes takes a keen mind and eye in a witty, clever, and fresh reinvention of the whodunit.

Edison Bixby is wealthy, handsome, and, due to a traumatic brain injury, impulsively rude. He’s also a brilliant insurance investigator who solves baffling crimes by figuring out how the design of the man-made world around us makes them possible. Enter Wally, a struggling actor hired to keep Bixby from offending everyone he meets.

Their first case together looks like a simple accident. Caroline Crowley took a nasty fall down a staircase at a shopping mall in front of dozens of witnesses. Video clearly shows the deadly misstep. But Bixby is certain she was murdered by design, subtly manipulated into causing her own demise. The mall itself made the crime intentional, if not inevitable.

Now Bixby must prove his outrageous theory before a very cunning killer gets others on his hit list to murder themselves, too.

    Review – Woman Missing by A B Whelan #womanmissing #abwhelan

    Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

I have read some of A B Whelan’s work and loved it, so when I had a chance to grab the ARC for Woman Missing, I jumped all over it. I love the gorgeous cover that pops off the page, and it definitely fits the story inside.

The two main characters are Susan Keller and Ethan Morro and the story is shared from their points of view.

Susan Keller had spent her life taking care of her husband and two children. But what about her? She has lost herself and her identity. What would it be like to start over? To be free? How about a hot week on Catalina Island with the girls and, maybe, find out?

With Ethan, each violent occurrence takes him a step further into darkness. How long will he be able to keep his secrets? How long will he be able to control his urges?

The story starts off a bit slow, laying the ground work as it moves along. I was lulled into a sense of complacency and I know A B Whelan won’t let me stay that way. A subtle sense of anticipation slowly rises. The suspense grows and it isn’t long before I am off and running, flipping pages with a sense of urgency.

A B Whelan is good about throwing some twists and turns into the mix and I loved the ending. Well done!

Two strangers. One island. What could possibly connect them?

Susan Keller is a devoted wife and mother whose children have left home for college. On a weekend island getaway with friends, she begins to wonder what life might look like if she were free to start again.

Ethan Morro works two exhausting jobs to support his wife and young children. Every day he watches wealthy tourists live the life he feels was meant for him.
When tragedy strikes the island, investigators begin searching for answers.

But what could possibly connect these two strangers?

And what secrets were they both carrying that led them there?

A chilling psychological suspense about desire, resentment, and the dangerous secrets people carry beneath ordinary lives.

Romantic Suspense – Vicious Consequences by Amanda Siegrist @amanda_siegrist #viciousconsequences

    Amazon / Goodreads

Amanda Siegrist writes some wonderful romance stories, but she has stepped up her game with Vicious Consequences, a sure to grip you in its clutches romantic suspense novel.

“This is Jake Anders. Don’t bother leaving a message because the likelihood I call you back is slim to none.” Beeeep.

I loved it. Gave me a chuckle, as does the next character in Amanda Siegrist’s novel, Vicious Consequences

I love unique characters, and Amanda Siegrist created one in Detective Victoria Johansen. She randomly spits out random facts. That could mislead someone into thinking she isn’t to be feared, but they would be wrong. She is not afraid to admit when she makes a mistake, such as arresting the wrong man, Jake Anders. She has an active mind and has been accused of thinking too much. I can relate to that. Sometimes it’s hard to shut the mind down.

The investigation has drawn them together and their relationship deepens. He accepts her and her uniqueness, but they don’t realize that the killer has them in their sights.

Darn it, Amanda. I know that killing off a character can add to the story, but sometimes it ticks me off. Now the suspense has ramped up and the villain is enjoying every minute of it.

Whenever I see Amanda Siegrist has written a new novel, I jump on her bandwagon. She has never failed to entertain me for hours on end, and recently she has amped up her game. So, if you are looking for a nail biter romance and a happy ever after, join me in reading an Amanda Siegrist novel.

My thanks go out to Amanda Siegrist for the opportunity to share her novel, Vicious Consequences.

    No good deed goes unpunished.

Jason Swanson thought he was done being a victim. After barely surviving an attack that left him jumping at shadows, he refuses to stand by when he witnesses a vicious assault. Except his heroism backfires when he’s arrested for the crime. Worse, the lead detective is the same woman who shot him down at his best friend’s wedding.

Detective Victoria Johansen is tough as nails when it comes to her job, even if she’s awkward around everyone else. When she realizes she arrested the wrong man, she’s strong enough to admit her mistake. What she doesn’t expect is her growing attraction to Jason—a man who sees past her oddness to the woman beneath.

As their relationship deepens, the real killer emerges from the shadows, turning their investigation into a deadly game of cat and mouse. But they have no idea how close the danger really is. Or that the killer has been watching them all along.

Perfect for readers who crave pulse-pounding romantic suspense with jaw-dropping twists. One-click Vicious Consequences now to start this edge-of-your-seat thriller today!

Love! Gimme some love and heaps of romance. I have a sappy heart that just loves two people meeting, going through the cycles of a relationship, and ultimately, falling in love. Give me a good book like that and I’m a happy camper:)

I write contemporary and romantic suspense, but I am partial to suspense. I just love a good mystery.

Besides writing, I love baking, crafts, and baseball…oh, and meeting new people. *smiles*

    Review – A Violent Masterpiece by Jordan Harper #jordanharper #aviolentmasterpiece #netgalley

    Amazon / Goodreads

A Violent Masterpiece by Jordan Harper has a cover to die for. I love it, but not so with the characters ‘between the pages’. At first, it seems none of them have any redeeming characteristics, but no one is all bad. It just takes the right situation for the good to surface.

There’s a live streaming nightcrawler, that can’t stoop low enough for his subscribers. Which is worse? The one chasing down the story, or the one that can’t wait to read about someone else’s downfall.

How about a street lawyer that helps those least fortunate. Can he keep his life ‘clean’?

How about a woman who works for an underground concierge company? Nothing is out of bounds.

Does this shine a spotlight on what our society is becoming? Too many of the situations have a ring of truth to them. I do love walking on the dark side, as long as it is only a story, and this is about as dark as it can get. Filled with nonstop action, leaving me feeling like I need to take a shower.

My thanks go out to NetGalley and Mulholland Books for the opportunity to read A Violent Masterpiece by Jordan Harper.

This epic crime novel tells a story of Los Angeles power brokers and those at the edge—and a single shattering incident that threatens to bring it all crashing down.

Los Angeles, right now. America with its back up against the wall. This Frankenstein’s monster of crimes and lurid dreams sewn together into something like a city.

A city ready to explode: A Hollywood pedophile is arrested, and is ready to tear down the city to get his freedom. A young woman goes missing — and men in black rubber gloves who look like cops clean out her apartment in the middle of the night. And the serial killer known as the LA Ripper is on the loose, leaving tragic/graphic/brutal crime scenes in his wake. Three people trying to keep their heads above the dirty water will find themselves coming together to unite these strands into one enormous, unspeakable crime …

JAKE DEAL is a gonzo live-streaming nightcrawler, beaming the city’s chaos straight to his audience of blood-hungry subscribers, giving them the view from the top of the mushroom cloud — until a job he can’t refuse drags him back into his old life of Hollywood glamour, drugs, sex and sleaze. Armed with cameras and hidden mics, he’ll infiltrate private clubs, gather high-class dirt — and stumble onto a conspiracy woven into the center of LA’s most powerful men, who call themselves “The Kids in the Candy Store.”

DOUG GIBSON is a street lawyer, who fights for his clients against the army of cops, prosecutors and judges – he is the knife they bring to the gunfight. But when he’s hired by a Hollywood pedophile ready to sell out his friends for a chance for freedom, he’ll take on a fight bigger than he could have imagined. And when his client “commits suicide” in prison, Gibson will have to stop being a weapon – and become a warrior.

KARA DELGADO works for an underground private concierge company – a make-a-wish foundation for the terminally rich. She scores drugs, makes connections, and plans multi-million dollar sex parties. She has learned the secret truth of this world: there are no rules, only prices. Her best friend Phoebe has gone missing, and Kara’s the only person who knows that Phoebe’s place was wiped clean of evidence by men in black rubber gloves. But when she begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to Phoebe, and its connection to the killer known as the LA Ripper, it will drag her into the dark heart of the city.

As Jake, Doug and Kara all investigate these crimes, they’ll encounter ketamine-addled sitcom stars, bloody riots, homeless gangsters, a killer cop on death row, secret vaults in Beverly Hills, tech-bro orgies, medical cannibals, true crime junkies, private security wet-work teams, reality shows, street takeovers, car chases, coyotes, a sadistic Tarzan, and a three day, fifty million dollar wedding, before everything is revealed and they must each make their choice about how to fight back in this violent world before the bloody, blazing conclusion.

Military Romance Review – Wicked Scars by Jane Blythe @jblytheauthor #wickedscars #bearspotspublications

    Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

Jane Blythe is a must read author for me and I am excited to read Wicked Scars, Prey Security: Bravo Team #6. I have been reading about Beth for some time and am very curious about what happened to her when she went missing for eight months. She has amnesia, so she can’t tell them.

Axel “Axe” Lindon, Beth’s husband, has the patience of a saint, but he is far from one. He will do whatever is necessary to help his wife, Beth, putting his life on the line to get the answers she needs.

The explosive beginning sets the hook, and we are off and running.

Jane Blythe is great at putting her characters ‘through the ringer’? The danger and suspense ramp up as the story progresses. But, I did run across some bumps along the way and had those moments where I thought, nope, not going there. Wicked Scars was not my favorite, but I was eager to find out Beth’s story, so there was no way I would turn away. The questions asked were given the answers that we all, readers and characters alike, were looking for.

That’s okay that Wicked Scars wasn’t my favorite, though, because I know there will be another story, another book, another series coming my way and I can hardly wait to enter any world that Jane Blythe has created.

My thanks go out to Jane Blythe for the opportunity to share Wicked Scars, Prey Security: Bravo Team #6 with you.

    4 Stars

Amnesia has stolen everything from her.

Beth Lindon doesn’t remember a single thing about who she or what happened to her to cause her mind to check out and blank out an entire lifetime. All she knows is she’s supposedly married to the man who saved her life six years ago. When her husband is almost killed in an explosion she knows she either has to remember of she’ll lose the man everyone tells her she was madly in love with.

For Axel “Axe” Lindon there is nothing worse than having your wife back in your life but being unable to comfort her, help her heal, because she has no idea who you are. His determination to get answers almost got himself and his teammates killed but he’s not stopping. Not until his wife remembers him and she’s back in his arms where she belongs.

But things aren’t as they seem, danger is circling closer, and without Beth’s memories they’re all sitting ducks.

Review – Nowhere To Hide by Carolyn Arnold @carolynarnold #netgalley #nowheretohide

    Amazon / KindleUnlimited / Goodreads

Nowhere To Hide by Carolyn Arnold is described as an unputdownable and pulse pounding thriller…and I totally agree. Carolyn Arnold has the ability to bring her characters to life, sharing their personal and professional lives, making them become real on the pages.

I am loving Sandra Vos, Carolyn Arnold’s latest character to shine in her own series. She is fallible, yet always tries to do the right thing. She sacrifices her personal time to a crisis that could cost a man his life. He wants answers, and she wants to supply them.

I love when the peripheral characters stand out as well as the main characters. I wonder…will they appear in a later story? Could they possible have their own story? You can never be sure where the trail would lead, and I am open to traveling down the road with them.

Looking for a must read author? Carolyn Arnold has multiple series that are sure to entertain you for hours…and, if you are anything like me…trying to solve the mystery before she puts it out there for all to see.

He paced while keeping his eye on his hostages. They watched him back with their gazes fixed on each step he took. Locking eyes with the father in a home so luxurious, so unlike his own, he knew this was his only chance for justice after all these years. He’d stop at nothing to get it.

When a lone gunman takes an entire family hostage in a wealthy suburb, there is only one FBI negotiator he’ll engage with. Special Agent Sandra Vos hit the headlines for bringing a crisis incident at Founders Hospital to a close, but there’s no time to rest with a family’s life in her hands.

Arriving on the scene, Sandra discovers that Edward Hanson and his family are the hostages. Edward is the son of the late Timothy Hanson who left his entire fortune to his son. While it seems this may be all about money, the hostage taker makes a demand that is far more personal. Reopen an investigation into a fatal car accident from thirty-three years ago or he shoots the entire family. But how does this connect to the Hansons?

Sandra calls in her boyfriend, Detective Eric Birch, at the Metropolitan Police Department, and asks him to dig into the case. Eric works to untangle a web of lies which leads him straight to the heart of the police force. But can any of this help Sandra talk the hostage taker down and save the family? And how much will Eric need to sacrifice in the pursuit of the truth?

A completely addictive mystery thriller perfect for fans of Kendra Elliot’s Mercy Kilpatrick series, Mary Stone and Elle Gray.

Review – The Last Mandarin by Louise Penny & Melissa Fung #netgalley #louisepenny #melissafung

Last Mandarin Louise Penny Mellissa Fung

    Amazon / Goodreads

The Last Mandarin by Louise Penny and Mellissa Fung is my first book by both authors. I grabbed a copy from NetGalley when I saw it, because my mother in law loves Louise Penny. I was not disappointed and I always appreciate a stand alone novel.

The Last Mandarin is look at two unlikely heroines, Alice Li, a first generation Chinese American and food blogger, and her mother, Vivien Li, a Chinese dissident, who escaped China after the famous Tiananmen Square standoff.

It begins when security and fire alarms go off all across the globe and the signal is traced back to China. Alice Li and her mother, Vivien Li are called to the White House, hoping they can decode the transmissions. Things don’t go where I thought they would and I love when an author can grab my attention and never let it go.

The suspense builds slowly. Power and greed drive the characters. Things are not as they seem, but the truth needs to be quashed or China could erupt into political disaster. I really like this twist. The mother and daughter relationship will be put to the ultimate test.

Could this be our future? Will wars still be fought by feet on the ground, or will everything cyber be the rule? How big a role with social media play? Aren’t we already living in a world where the fifth estate, social media, has the one of the loudest voices? This is one example of how something good can be twisted into something bad.

    4 Stars

A standalone thriller co-written by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Gamache series and an award-winning journalist.

In a fast-paced, all-too-real thriller co-written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny and award-winning journalist Mellissa Fung, global politics become personal for two unlikely heroines. Alice Li, a first-generation Chinese-American, is an erstwhile food blogger who has lived in the shadow of her mother, Vivien Li. A Chinese dissident who escaped China after Tiananmen Square, Vivien is now a globally recognized human rights activist and passionate advocate for a free and democratic China.

When security and fire alarms go off simultaneously all around the world, setting off a panic, the signal is traced back to China. As world leaders scramble to respond, Vivien and Alice are called to the White House in hopes Madame Li can decode the Chinese intentions.

While it makes some sense that the President would turn to Vivien, since she regularly advises world leaders on the actions of today’s Chinese government, what isn’t clear is why they’d want to talk to Alice.

After looking at the evidence, Vivien says that the only thing worse than the Chinese government being behind it, is if they are not. It would mean, she explains, that some clandestine element within China is calling the shots. That the President of China has lost control. And an unstable China cannot be good for anyone.

Or perhaps that’s exactly what the shrewd old politician wants everyone to think.

Caught up in the chaos, Vivien and Alice are uniquely placed to stop the next, cataclysmic attack. But there are forces deep within both the American and Chinese governments intent on stopping mother and daughter. The estranged pair, who excels at misunderstanding each other, must figure out how to work together.

The increasingly frantic search for answers takes the women from the Oval Office to an office building in Akron, Ohio, from the noodle shops of Hong Kong to the necropolis of the first emperor. Along the way they must decode an old legend, and an old language invented by women, for women.

The Last Mandarin is an electrifying study of absolute power and voracious greed, political terror and personal conviction. But it is also, as to be expected from the minds of Louise Penny, beloved author of the Gamache novels, and Mellissa Fung, an acclaimed international journalist, an intimate examination of choice, of sacrifice, of memory and myths, both cultural and personal. It is the story of a mother and daughter, as well as a compelling international thriller about the precarious balance of power across the world, and within a family. And what happens when both break down.
