A Maggie Robinson book is like the best kind of chocolate: delicious

Today
bestselling author
Return to the scandalous secrets of the English countryside’s renowned
getaway for R&R—restoration and romance—in this delightful
series from Maggie Robinson!
After two months of treatment at Puddling-on-the-Wold, Mary Nicola Mayfield
has shown no improvement, and her condition seems impervious to
rehab. But Nicola is not the typical guest of Gloucestershire’s
destination village for the wealthy and wayward. The trauma of
surviving a horrific train wreck has rendered her mute; her injuries
have healed, but try as she might, she cannot utter a sound. With her
family and fiancé at their wits’ end, Nicola knows Puddling is the
resort—the last resort—that holds any hope for her recovery.
Lord Jack Ryder—baron, businessman and, some say, mad genius—has gone
from the heights of success to hit rock bottom, after a faulty girder
from his iron foundry caused a dreadful bridge collapse. Nothing has
assuaged his guilt over the passenger train that crashed or the lives
that were destroyed. The stringent regimen at Puddling is not doing
much for his deep depression—until he meets his mysteriously silent
neighbor. Their fiery affair breaks all the rules, but will the
unspoken truth be too hot to handle?

Maggie Robinson didn’t know she wanted to write until she woke up in the
middle of the night once really annoyed with her husband. Instead of
smothering him with a pillow, she decided to get up and write—to
create the perfect man—at least on a computer screen. Only to
discover that fictional males can be just as resistant to direction
as her husband. The upside is that she’s finally using her English
degree and is still married to her original, imperfect hero. Since
she’s imperfect, too, that makes them a perfect match. Until her
midnight keyboarding, she had been a teacher, librarian, newspaper
reporter, administrative assistant to two non-profits, community
volunteer, and mother of four in seven different states. Now Maggie
can call herself a romance writer in Maine. There’s nothing she
likes better than writing about people who make mistakes, but don’t
let the mistakes make them.

Sex, Torture and Human Trafficking ~ Blood is Power by Ella Medler Review

Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Ella Medler’s Hunter Series has some of the most awesome, vibrant, eyecatching covers that relate to the story and I love them. I could never walk by without picking them up, just by the cover alone.

I had read Blood Is Heavier, Book I, and I was dying to continue Nick’s story. Blood Is Power picks up where Blood Is Heavier left off. I knew this would be another hit thriller and I was not disappointed. Fast paced, exciting and suspenseful.

Nick was tired of all the killing, but Campbell or Dallas had kidnapped Cameron and Maxi to make him do their bidding, so now they would have to pay. They had no idea what a big mistake they had made. If he was good enough to hire, they should have thought of the repercussions. He found the yacht easily.

Tequila is Nick’s best bud. They had been in Special Forces together and had a special bond. She understood him and would do anything for him. She is strong, stubborn and resourceful. He had Max and Cam. She was alone, but she takes care of his family as if it’s her own. She is obsessive, impetuous and pushes things too far. It gets her in trouble. I was freaking out for Tequila. I love her and am scared for her.

Police Officer Newton, along with Marsh is doing a lot off the grid. Newton has a disregard for rules. They are walking a mighty fine line, venturing on their own to save…..They will risk their careers to do the right thing.

What was Dollar dela Rue’s game? He enjoyed being turned on by others pain. Is he in to human trafficking? Aweful, just awful Ella. How do you come up with such evilness. LOL I love it.

“So much blood? I hope its worth it.”

“Blood is power. Its money and influence and authority. It’s me.”

Hard to not give away too much. Police corruption. Rich powerful men ruling the world. A few out for the few. They can bring you down on a whim. Is that happening now? I do believe in conspiracies. Just look at current events.

I love thrillers and this is a great one. From the UK to Cypress to the Maldines. Greed, corruption, pornography, sex slaves, murder, and the deepest, darkest depravities of the sexually perverted.

Death of a 1000 – ling chi.

The writing was so real, I was at turns afraid, disgusted and super pissed.

I can’t think of where she will go next but am glad to hear that Tequila’s story will be told.

Bonus material and an interview with Ella Medler is at the end of the book.

The interview is very entertaining. When she tells how she remains sane, I loved it. Cracking up. I loved reading how she chooses characters names, and does her research on locations, the military culture, maps, organ transplant, slave trade, trafficking…

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of Blood Is Power from Ella Medler.

SYNOPSIS

In this second instalment of his story, Nick Hunter proceeds to track down and eliminate every person involved in his son’s kidnap. But where will the chase end? And has he bitten off more than he can chew? Nick discovers a tangled net of human trafficking and corruption, and world-class players with a penchant for disturbed obsessions. Gritty, dark, chock-full of suspense. Don’t start reading if you cannot finish it in one sitting.

85,000 words approx, plus Bonus Materials 1, 2 & 3.

(non-spoiler excerpt)
“Action!” Dollar shouted. Then, quieter, to her. “Oh, I will enjoy watching your end, Precious. Every single second of it. Every cut, every lick of blood, every morsel of flesh that drops off your body.” Tequila felt her eyes bulge out of their sockets. She was too terrified to breathe, too stunned to think. And still, the beast walked nearer. He sneered, and then lifted up the scalpel until it was level with his chin. “Don’t forget to scream,” he whispered.

Don’t miss BLOOD IS THE END, the last book in the Hunter trilogy, due for release in 2014, and DEAL WITH IT! – Tequila’s story, a spin-off created by popular demand.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ella MedlerElla Medler is a U.K. author and free-lance editor. She writes fiction in more than one genre in a seemingly vain attempt to slow down her overactive brain enough to write non-fiction on subjects she knows a thing or two about. She also does not believe in the starchy use of English and ignores the type of rule that doesn’t allow for a sentence to be finished in a preposition. Her books are action-driven and well-developed characters are her forte. Loves: freedom. Hates: her inner censor.

Giveaway – More Than A Soldier by D M Annechino @DMHemingway

More Than a Soldier, based on a true story is Angelo DiMarco’s powerful story of survival,
resilience and courage.

A Few Words From D M Annechino

  • Where do you write? Is there something you need in order to write (music, drinks?)

I have a small office in my apartment in a cozy corner near a window where I can look outside and see palm trees leaning away from the warm ocean breezes of the Pacific. Except for birds chirping and singing outside my window, I need total quiet for me to write. Any outside noise, music, people chatting in the courtyard near my apartment, totally distracts me. There are times when I think about finding a log cabin in a remote area and writing a book there from beginning to end. As appealing as it sounds, I don’t think my wife would warm up to the idea.

Do you write every day?

I try to write every day to keep the momentum going. However, when the creative brain juices just aren’t flowing or I’m distracted by the busy-ness of life, I’ve learned that you just can’t force the creative process and you just have to walk away.

What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?

Quitting a good paying day job to write fulltime.

What made you write a military book about WWII?

The desire to write this book didn’t blossom until my uncle died in 2010. During his entire life he never shared his story with anyone. The only facts the family knew were that he was captured by the Germans and he escaped. A week before my uncle died, he shared the whole story of his capture with his son, Steve, my cousin. When Steve told me the story, I immediately felt compelled to write a book about the horrific experience my uncle endured.

  • What advice would you give budding writers?

I think one of the most important lessons I learned is that rarely does a writer become an overnight success. It’s a long hard road. If you’re writing for fame and fortune, you might want to rethink your career path. Remember: Everyone is a critic. So you really need to have thick skin. The best advice I can offer any aspiring author is to accept the reality that rejection is the prerequisite to success. Even some of the most successful writers in history endured years of rejection long before they were recognized for their craft.

It’s always wonderful to hear what drives an author and I appreciate you sharing your  thoughts with my readers, D.

Giveaway – Within A Captain’s Power by Lisa A Olech @LisaOlech @SilverDaggerSxx

I love action, adventure and pirates, especially female ones, so I am very excited to share Within A Captain’s Power by Lisa A Olech.

Check out the fantastic cover.

WITHIN A CAPTAIN’S POWER
by Lisa Olech
PUB DATE: 4/4/2017
Genre: Historical Romance

Never underestimate the power of a pirate . . .

Captain James Steele is duty bound to capture the privateer Scarlet Night and bring her rebellious crew to England to hang. Then he will leave his majesty’s service, make an upstanding marriage, and join the landed gentry. But the winds of fate are blowing the straitlaced commander utterly off course.

Once aboard, James comes face to face with a pirate boy who is in reality fierce, desperate—and gorgeous—Samantha Christian, on the run from a sadistic Virginia plantation owner. With her identity unbound, the good captain dutifully takes her under his personal command, whereupon decorum goes out the porthole. But while his heart is lost to Samantha by the time they reach England, her noose still awaits. Now James’s sense of duty will be severely tested. As for Samantha, she has a plan, and a duty, of her own . . .

 GUEST POST

Let’s Talk about Pirates!

Let’s start by dressing the part. Most pirates’ clothing was stolen from their prey. Captains picked the nicest and most fashionable garments so everyone would know, “Hey, look at me, I’m the Captain!” There are reports that captains fearing capture would rush below deck and change into something less fancy so they could blend into their crew and receive an easier punishment.

How about an earring? There are a host of reasons and theories regarding pirates wearing earrings. Some believe an earring marked the first time the sailor crossed the equator, or sailed the vicious waters around Cape Horn. Others claim that sailors believed precious metals pierced through their earlobes actually improved their eyesight. There is another theory that the gold and silver was to pay for their funerals. With their names and home ports engraved within the hoop, if they washed up on shore, their bodies could be sent home. And yet another reason for an earring is to hang waxed earplugs from in case you were a gunner and too close to those exploding cannons! Me…I just think they made those seafaring bad boys a bit more rakish.

There is some debate regarding eye patches. Yes, there’s evidence of pirates losing arms, legs, and eyes. But some believe that eye patches were worn so pirates could keep one eye adjusted to seeing in the dark found below deck. Black Beard had a wooden leg, but it wasn’t due to a 10lb. cannon ball removing his limb. It was due to diabetes. If a pirate lost a leg in battle, most times they never survived the injury, and it certainly ended their career. It is true that Captain James Hook did have an iron hook that replaced his missing hand, however. Here I thought that was only Peter Pan fiction!

Speaking of fiction… there is little evidence of anyone ‘walking the plank.’ If pirates want you tossed into the water, over the rail ye went! Of course, there were more gruesome forms of punishment. Flogging, marooning, keelhauling, and hanging…by various parts of your body…from the highest yardarm!

Also, there’s no record of a pirate having a parrot as a pet. Cats were common aboard ship to keep the mice and rat population at bay, (FYI…white cats were considered bad luck.) but parrots were seen more for the money they would bring than for a colorful shoulder accessory.

Not all pirates were cutthroats. In fact, they were fairly civilized. Rules were strictly followed regarding fighting amongst the crew, gambling onboard, compensation should you be wounded or killed. Everyone received a fair share according to rank and decisions were made by democratic vote. Stealing from a crewmember was a major no no.

There were ‘gentlemen’ pirates who were well known for treating their crews and captives well. Stede Bonnet was one of these gentlemen pirates. He was a wealthy plantation owner when he decided to buy his own ship and take to the sea. It’s rumored that a nagging wife was his motivation to become a pirate, or a mid-life crisis! Black Bart Roberts gave his musicians Sundays off.

Being a pirate was a decent way to make a living. In fact, a lot of sailors signed on to pirate crews because the Navy’s pay checks just didn’t go very far in the 1600’s. Long Ben Avery wasn’t a pirate for very long, but made the richest haul and retired less than a year after he started. And speaking of richest treasures, it is said, Oliver Levasseur had treasure estimated into the billions. When he was captured and brought to be hung, he pulled a necklace from his neck and threw it into the crowd. It contained a cryptogram of 17 lines. He shouted “Find my treasure, the one who may understand it!” Treasure hunters are still trying to ‘understand’ it.

Some pirates were brutal, vicious barbarians, however. Black Beard used to stick lit lengths of rope under the brim of his hat so smoke would circle his head and his prey would believe he was possessed. Francis l’Olonnais cut out a prisoners heart and ate it in order to get the other prisoners to cooperate. His crew deserted soon after. There’s pirate crazy…then there’s pirate ‘l’Olonnais’ crazy!

And of course, I can’t possibly forget to mention all those incredible, bad-ass, ‘tough-as-hardtack’ women who fought as pirates throughout the golden age and beyond. Anne Bonney, Mary Read, Grace O’Malley, Rachel Wall (the only female pirate from New England—and the last pirate hung in Boston Common.), and my personal favorite, Ching Shih. Ching Shih was the most powerful of all pirate queens. After being pulled from a life of prostitution to marry, and her husband’s subsequent death a short three years later, Ching Shih became one of the most feared female pirates of her time. She terrorized the Chinese coast and amassed a huge fleet of more than a fifteen hundred ships and captained more than 70,000 men. She was very fond of beheadings, and deserters who just wouldn’t listen to reason…they saved their heads, but lost their ears!

I wonder what happened to all those earrings?

Lisa A. Olech is an artist/writer living in her dream house nestled among the lakes in New England. She loves getting lost in a steamy book, finding the perfect pair of sexy shoes, and hearing the laughter of her men. Being an estrogen island in a sea of testosterone makes her queen. She believes in ghosts, silver linings, the power of a man in a tuxedo, and happy endings.

Giveaway & Reviews for Marred & Cleaved by Sue Coletta @SueColetta1 @SilverDaggerSxx

If you are looking for a fabulous and informative crime and thriller blog to follow, look no further. I have been a follower of Sue Coletta’s for some time now, so I was super excited to get my hands on Marred and Cleaved.

Just check out the covers by EJR Digital Art!

Cleaved

Cleaved
Grafton County Series, Book 2
by Sue Coletta
Genre: Thriller, Suspense
I just finished MARRED and it blew me away, so there was no way I was going to wait to read CLEAVED. I have to have more!
I love anything to do with water, and when I saw the Marine Patrol and Fish & Game would be involved, I became even more excited. I know what water can do to a dead body and I’m looking forward to finding out who put it there.
Sue starts her books out with a bang and I am gasping for breath right along with Sage. Then, Sue takes it to an even darker place and I excited to see how it will play out.
I feel as if the characters have become my friends and I worry for them as the serial killer adds body after body and the action continues non stop.
Sage has great instincts and after all she has been through, she listens to them.
Frankie has become my favorite character. She is humorous, brash, dresses as if she’s going out on the town instead of to a crime scene, hates authority and is quick with a sharp retort. Niko doesn’t think she would be good as the Sheriff because of these faults, so he is constantly grooming someone else to take his place when he quits.
Niko’s team has a Keystone Kop, Mayberry feel to them, but they are coming together, making constant progress.
The serial killer is back with a vengeance and I wonder if it is the same one…or is there more than one.
Sue Coletta takes us to a very dark place with a kidnapping that would make any of us cringe and rage at the villain and the world.
I love how creative Sue is in coming up with new ways for the serial killer to torture and kill his victims, really making them suffer and beg for death. She never thinks the evil is bad enough, so she piles on more and more and more…
Her ability to create so much tension and angst, at times left me white knuckled, gripping my Kindle so tight my hands hurt, making me want to reach through the screen and take matters into my own hands.
I voluntarily reviewed Marred by Sue Coletta.

Author Sage Quintano writes about crime. Her husband Niko investigates it.
Together they make an unstoppable team. But no one counted on a
twisted serial killer, who stalks their sleepy community, uproots
their happy home, and splits the threads that bonds their family
unit.
Darkness swallows the Quintanos whole—ensnared by a ruthless killer out for
blood. Why he focused on Sage remains a mystery, but he won’t stop
till she dies like the others.
Women impaled by deer antlers, bodies encased in oil drums, nursery rhymes,
and the Suicide King. What connects these cryptic clues? For Sage and
Niko, the truth may be more terrifying than they ever imagined.

Marred
Marred
Grafton County Series, Book 1
Marred by Sue Coletta starts out with a baby’s funeral and a severely broken woman who is pissed off at herself and the world because of it. I can’t help but wonder WHY.
Sage is broken in more ways than one…blaming herself for her unborn baby’s death even though she had been tortured by a serial killer and was lucky to even be alive. She is MARRED for life and now I understand why.
NOW, he’s back, terrorizing her and she has nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.
I cannot imagine what she has been through, though Sue Coletta’s writing makes me become totally engrossed in her story, filled with details that draw a too vivid picture in my mind. I think it is time she takes matters into her own hands and let him know she will not cow down…this time. I love when the character has been through a traumatic, life changing experience, and the past comes back to haunt them, demanding they take action to defend themselves.
Sage is a bestselling author, writing crime novels, and this adds an extra element, making it even more interesting. Does her writing bring the killer even closer, thinking of her as a challenge? She keeps secrets, pushing people away, even keeping her husband at arm’s length. She writes about crime and her husband investigates the.
The murders are described in detail and they are brutal, savage. The more gruesome the better for me. LOL I guess I am a little twisted myself.
The body count rises.
I’m almost at 50% and I see what you are doing Sue. I know what you set me up for and I think it’s going to get ugly. I am pissed off at both of them for not communicating, but if they did we wouldn’t be in this dark place, with a sense of urgency and danger making me want to read faster and slower all at the same time, savoring the story.
There is a touch of the paranormal, rape, brutal and mind numbing torture. Why do women and society place blame on the vivctim, when it is the villain’s fault?
At times I am so angry with Niko that I want to reach into my Kindle and slap him upside the head, cuss him out, and tell him, “It’s not about YOU!”
Having a couple of critters adds another element that I love. They’d put their lives on the line for her.
Uh oh, I am glad that what I was thinking at 50% was wrong. Sue…you did a great job of yanking my chain and it takes a lot to lead me down the wrong path. Fabulous!
Deputy Sheriff Frankie, a female, is becoming a favorite character for me. To say she is rough around the edges is putting it mildly. She is aggressive and a bit raunchy, but I wouldn’t want any one else by my side in a time of crises.
WOW, Sue. You can sure spin a tale that has a lot of suspense that keeps my emotions raging as I struggle to take a calming breath before moving on to more of the same. You twisted and turned the story, keeping plenty of surprises coming my way.
Marred is the first book in the Grafton County series. One villain is taken care of, but you will want to read more of the series, because one remains.
I voluntarily reviewed Marred by Sue Coletta.

Monday Mini – Hopeless by Colleen Hoover @colleenhoover

New York Times Bestselling Author Colleen Hoover is an author all romance lovers will want on their reading list.

Hopeless (Hopeless, #1)Amazon  /  Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I won this signed first edition paperback and was delighted. I have read Colleen Hoover’s work before and feel she will not let me down in Hopeless about a seventeen year old girl and her first love.

The first guy she felt something for and…

He’s a dropout, he’s moody, he’s got a temper and…he’s just…Hopeless.

When they lay on the airport runway and gaze at the stars it brought back memories of Mr Wonderful and I laying on the tennis court at Cape Cod and stargazing ourselves.

I loved it, but the way it was written made it seem like the characters were older.

Colleen Hoover’s writing makes the story unfold with fun bantering dialogue in an easy reading story as they discover each other and we watch the complex characters grow and develop.

She’s Like A Rainbow by Eileen Colucci is an original and creative story that illustrates how we are more similar than different, with our own insecurities and problems dogging us. Teens and adults alike can learn a thing or two from Reema.

I had been looking for books outside my normal reading and when Eileen offered me a copy, I accepted. The cover was what first drew me in, but when I read the blurb I thought it would be a fun story.

The allusion to the legend of the White Buffalo fits Reema’s life. The baby starts out white and changes color when he gets older. Most of us are a collection of nationalities.

Reema is a strong and determined young girl who refuses to give up on what she believes to be the truth. She shows love, patience and persistence as she seeks the answers to her questions.

All the childhood angst, plus…

The writing is wonderful and touches on many issues, such as being Muslim, and adoption.

I would highly recommend this story to people of all ages.

GOODREADS BLURB

“The summer I turned ten, my life took a fairy tale turn.”

So begins Reema Ben Ghazi’s tale set in Morocco, SHE’S LIKE A RAINBOW. Reema awakes one morning to find her skin has changed from whipped cream to dark chocolate. From then on, every few years she undergoes another metamorphosis, her color changing successively to red, yellow and ultimately brown. What is the cause of this strange condition and is there a cure? Does the legend of the White Buffalo have anything to do with it? As Reema struggles to find answers to these questions, she confronts the reactions of the people around her, including her strict and unsympathetic mother, Lalla Jamila; her timid younger sister, Zakia; and her two best friends, Batoul and Khalil. At the same time, she must deal with the trials of adolescence even as her friendship with Khalil turns to first love. One day, in her search for answers, Reema discovers a shocking secret – she may have been adopted at birth. As a result, Reema embarks on a quest to find her birth mother that takes her from twentieth-century Rabat to post-9/11 New York.

Reema’s humanity shines through her story, reminding us of all we have in common regardless of our particular cultural heritage. SHE’S LIKE A RAINBOW, which will appeal to Teens as well as Adults, raises intriguing questions about identity and ethnicity.

EXCERPT:

I leaned forward and kissed him, and even though he was sleeping, he kissed me back, and I felt him stirring against my leg, making me smile. I pushed my hips against him gently, and felt him push back, again, while remaining asleep, a purely sensitized response. I wondered if it was possible to have, not “sleepy sex”, which we had all the time, but actual “sleeping sex”? I kissed him again, wanting to get busy, but feeling guilty about waking him up. He kissed me back, but remained peacefully, almost obstinately, asleep. I sighed.

I put my hand on him, feeling more than a stirring this time, and on a whim, went under the covers, head first, pulling the blanket up from the bottom first to make sure I could breathe (I’d gotten caught in that situation before, and nearly suffocated from a lack of oxygen).

I took care of business, so to speak, knowing he was definitely awake by the time I finished. And he finished. I crawled out from under the covers, blinked in the bright light of day and smiled at him.

He smiled back at me.

“Good morning, tiger,” he said in his gravelly morning voice, pulling me up to kiss me. “What was that for, hmm?” He squeezed me.

“You said in the taxi, remember? The night we walked across the bridge into the city and took the cab here?” I looked up at him. He shook his head.

“You said that smiles and blow jobs were all the thanks you’d ever want from me for you making me so happy.” I snuggled down into his arms. “So now I’ve given you both already for today.”

He snickered. “So is this something that’s supposed to have been occurring every day, then? Because if that’s the case, I think we’re a few days behind, love.” He lifted the covers. “You’d better get down there and do a bit of catch up.” He looked at me.

I looked at him. “Dude, I’m up for it if you are.” I began to crawl back under the blankets. He looked horrified and pulled me back.

I smirked at him. “All bluster, I knew it.”

He made his mouth into a round O of offended shock. “You’re so rude. How can you impugn my manhood like that? Have I not kept you good and thoroughly fucked pretty much each and every day since we got together?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” I acknowledged. “The thing is that I don’t know what other guys are like. Maybe any man out there could be doing what you’re doing, you know? Or even more?” I looked up at him.

He pursed his lips and looked at me through narrowed eyes. “You take that back, right now, or I will make you suffer. I will tickle you until you wee. Never was a threat made more seriously.”

“No!” I shrieked. “I take it back I take it back!” I turned to straddle him and leaned forward to hug him. “I love you I love you I love you, Theodore Shelley.” By the last time I said it, all traces of humor had left my voice, and I was left looking into his smoke-gray eyes, feeling emotional.

“Wow,” he said softly. He took a deep breath. “You look enchanting, Ms. Foster.”

I smiled. “I think that’s just because you’re looking through those eyes of yours, Teddy,” I said with a little laugh, touching his nose with my finger.

He sat up, hugging me. “Shower?” he whispered.

“Shower,” I responded with a smile.
