INTERVIEW

I want to welcome Devon McCormack to fundinmental. I love to hear what authors think about their books and characters, so I chose this interview to share with you.

Okay, Devon, take it away.

What’s the story of Hideous?

I always say it’s the story of a boy and his demon. Luke Retter lives in a world where demons are a known and constant threat. When Luke was eight, his demon-possessed severed off one of his hands and gouged out one of his eyes. It also marked him with its emblem. People who bear an emblem of a demon are called curseds. Curseds are more likely to be possessed themselves later in life, so they are monitored and essentially enslaved by the state. Many years after his attack, Luke works as a janitor at an all-boys academy, where he has to watch all the other kids live out their normal lives. He’s jealous. He wishes he could just make friends and go to school dances, but he can’t and he knows he never will. Then the demon that possessed his father finds him, and things just get even worse…

When did you decide you wanted to write YA books?

I didn’t really ever make a decision to write Young Adult novels. I knew when the idea for Hideous came to me that it was going to end up being most appropriate for a Young Adult audience, but I just write stories as they come to me. I try not to write for genres, but I think that it’s natural for people to gravitate to genres they like. For instance, I’ve noticed that I primarily write paranormal stories, which makes sense, considering those were the types of stories that I grew up loving. I think a part of what interests me about that age range is that there’s so much emotion during that time. And not just emotion, but very strong emotion coupled with very rigid ideas about the world. As I grew up, I discovered that the world wasn’t what I was led to believe, so my expectations changed, and I never have the sort of dramatic breakdowns that I had in high school. But back then, when I was still believing so many of the distortions of reality, I had very strong reactions to not getting what I wanted.

 Who are your favorite YA authors?

Hands down, I’d have to say S.E. Hinton. She was the first book I read that was technically Young Adult adult. It was Rumble Fish. I think most people read The Outsiders first, but we didn’t get to that until the following year. Tex was my favorite book, though. He was so cool. He was so interesting. I wanted to be him. My most recent Young Adult adult author favorite would have to be Scott Westerfeld. I adore his The Midnighters series. It’s about these kids who have powers during this special hour where time stops for everyone but them. The stories are so well written and fun. When I first read those books, I stood up and paced my room because I was so excited. They were thrilling. They were riveting. I recommend those books to anyone and everyone. I can’t think of a book that has elicited as much excitement from me as that.

SYNOPSIS

.

Eight years ago, Luke Retter witnessed the brutal murder of his mother and sister at the hands of his demon-possessed father. He survived but lost a hand and an eye. The demon also burned its emblem into his skin, marking him as a cursed. Those who bear this mark are at risk of becoming possessed themselves, so they are monitored and enslaved by the state-run UCIS. Working as a slave is hard, but Luke prefers it to the possibility of being controlled by a demon.

One night, Luke wakes to find his worst nightmare coming true. His father’s demon has returned. In a panic, he runs to the only person who might be able to help: Zack, a cursed who ran away from the state and created an underground community to protect other fugitive curseds. Zack helps him suppress the demon. But the city’s become a time bomb, and Luke’s demon itches to escape.

With the UCIS closing in on Zack’s underground operation and Luke’s demon crafting its own, nefarious plot, Luke realizes that he must take a stand.

AUTHOR BIO

Devon McCormack spends most of his time hiding in his lair, adventuring in paranormal worlds with his island of misfit characters. A good ole Southern boy, McCormack grew up in the Georgian suburbs with his two younger brothers and an older sister. At a very young age, he spun tales the old fashioned way, lying to anyone and everyone he encountered. He claimed he was an orphan. He claimed to be a king from another planet. He claimed to have supernatural powers. He has since harnessed this penchant for tall tales by crafting whole worlds where he can live out whatever fantasy he chooses.

A gay man himself, McCormack focuses on gay male characters, adding to the immense body of literature that chooses to represent and advocate gay men’s presence in media. His body of work ranges from erotica to young adult, so readers should check the synopses of his books before purchasing so that they know what they’re getting into.

Praise for KILLER’S INSTINCT

“What could be creepier than hunting down your own zombie mommy? And what could be more psychologically satisfying to a teen because…it’s just pretend. Isn’t it? I wanted to squeeze my eyes shut tight and turn away from the sublimely dark and smart Killer’s Instinct. But how could I? A single page in, I was hooked.” — Jacqueline Mitchard, author of What We Lost in the Dark and The Deep End of the Ocean

Killer’s Instinct by Dawn Dalton and Judith Graces is a clever and fast-paced thriller that raises the bar for monster-hunting tales. Nuanced and well-crafted, this novel is told from the points of view of four distinctly defined young characters—Hyde, the hulk in sheep’s clothing; Kain, the wild card; Caddoc, the unit jock; and Hope, both gifted and cursed with a sixth sense. Hope’s inner strengths and compassion make her a fitting role model for teenage readers, yet her vulnerability renders her a satisfyingly sympathetic heroine. Killer’s Instinct is going to knock other YA monster-battling books off the shelves.” —    Gary Braver, bestselling and award-winning author of Tunnel Vision

“Hope sees dead people. It’s her greatest weapon and her ultimate curse. After the death of her father and her mother rising from the grave as a mindless corpse, Hope joins an elite fighting team at Le Manoir, a group of teens trained to deal with all manner of paranormal spooks and baddies. She wants to find what’s left of her mother and put her to rest, but first, she needs to learn how — and she might need some help along the way. Hope is a wonderful heroine, smart savvy, and good with a gun: my favorite kind of kick-asser! The other members of the team kept me on my toes, never quite sure who I could trust and what their true motivations were.” — Sherry Ficklin, author of the Gods of Fate series

Mini Review – Twilight Hunter by Kait Ballenger

Twilight Hunter (Execution Underground, #1)Jace is a Hunter of the paranormal kind, but when he runs into Frankie his life is changed forever. Isn’t that how it usually goes? She is Alpha to the Rochester Pack, so the last thing he needs to do is get involved with a were. I lived in Rochester for ten years, so I was very familiar with the territory, but I never did run into a were or a hunter. Drat, I wouldn’t have minded running into Jace myself. He’s a good guy that gets a bad rap and a great example for the all males. I love books about serial killers and this had twists and turns that kept me turning the pages until the wee hours of the morning. Romance, lust, murder, jealousy and so much more abound in this novel of the paranormal.

I am looking forward to reading more about The Execution Underground. Rated for adults.

I won this signed first edition paperback on Dark Faerie Tales.

Ghostly Tour for The Complete Good Luck Agency by K S Augustin with Giveaway

VBT_The_Complete_Check_Your_Luck_Agency_Banner_copy

This post contains all the tour information for The Complete Check Your Luck Agency by K S Augustin, along with a Guest Post and Giveaway. I would like to start with the Guest Post. So, let’s meet and talk with K S Augustin.

GUEST POST

Two fishes, both out of water.

Well, the first thing I need to do is thank Sherry for her lovely invitation to blog here. And the second is to tell you why I asked to be here in the first place!

I have a book. (You’ve probably guessed that already.) And it’s an urban fantasy, located in south-east Asia and based on some south-east Asian beliefs. I say “some” because, really, there are just so many, you can spend an entire life writing them all down and still not cover everything. But, you know, it was all so interesting that I knew I had to make something out of all of it, and that’s how THE COMPLETE CHECK YOUR LUCK AGENCY was born.

When you have a different world to what your readers are used to, the first thing you must do is build a bridge between the two, a way of linking both worlds so that you, the reader, can understand what’s going on and what it all means. So my protagonist, Ursula Formosa, is essentially a fish out of water. Her parents emigrated to the United Kingdom when she was little and now, after their deaths, she’s back, trying to make sense of a homeland that is really much stranger than she anticipated.

That’s where Ursula and I coincide because, as far as Singapore and Malaysia are concerned, I’m a fish out of water as well. My own parents emigrated (to Australia) when I was little and, although it’s taken more time, I’m back. I think this made it easier to write the books because everything had a “new to me” sheen. I could relive the moments when unwrapping a banana-leaf packet of nasi lemak (literally, “fat rice”!) or catching a scent of an equatorial rainforest. Being Western-educated, like Ursula, I was able to identify facets that are uniquely Asian, and explain them to my mostly Western readers. Of course, how well I did that is up to you, the reader, to decide.

Have you seen any commercials/advertisements on south-east Asia recently? Chances are, if you have, food was prominently featured. Here’s where I think I’ve got it over Ursula. She likes food but she also watches her weight (as the restaurant scene with ghost, Simon Oakland, illustrates). Me, I’m waaay past that. LOL I love food. The bigger the variety, the better. And, because it’s an intrinsic part of south-east Asia, food made its way into the book, to the extent that a couple of reviewers have described it as “food porn”. Ah, that term still tickles me!

Although Ursula and I are two completely different people (sometimes I felt like yelling at her: “Get on with it, already!”), we have some important elements in common. And it’s nice to know that, whatever scrapes Ursula gets into in the future, there’ll always be a bit of me tagging along.

“Food porn”  I love the Guest Post and I feel my readers will enjoy it too. Thanks, Kaz for stopping by to entertain us. ^_^

The Complete Check Your Luck Agency by K.S. Augustin

 BLURB

 Sometimes life is stranger than fiction.

 After the tragic death of her parents, and with nothing left tying her to the United Kingdom, Ursula Formosa returns to her homeland and a job with the eccentrically-named Singapore firm, “The Check Your Luck Agency”.

What begins as an attempt to stave off boredom turns into a new way of life as the scales drop from Ursula’s eyes and she tentatively enters a realm that contains vengeful ghosts, toyol, demons, pontianak and curses, not to mention old-fashioned fraud and larceny. As she befriends bomohs, mediums and a young woman already centuries old, Ursula’s ideas of friendship expand into a fresh view of the world that surrounds her.

But she isn’t going to be left to ease into things. A criminal mastermind, who is also a powerful sorcerer, is gathering mythical creatures to help him possess every living soul in Singapore, and he isn’t about to let the members of The Check Your Luck Agency stand in his way!

 EXCERPTS

“Did you have any difficulty finding the house?” Evelyn Long asked as she led me up a short flight of concrete steps.

“Well, the taxi driver wasn’t too keen to drive down the lane.”

Evelyn nodded her head. “The ignorant fear what they don’t understand,” she said.

I made a noise that might have indicated I agreed with her sentiment, and left it at that.

“I’m afraid Alfred is still meditating,” she began.

“I’m sorry,” I cut in, a shade too quickly, “I knew I shouldn’t have come. Perhaps I could pay him another visit some other time?”

I turned as if to leave and Evelyn Long grabbed me by the arm. No, “grabbed” was too gentle a term for it. Although her movement was smooth and she appeared to hold me lightly, I knew I would not be able to wrench free of her grasp without breaking flesh or limbs, or both, all of them mine. I looked up at her, startled, but saw nothing beyond polite interest. There wasn’t an ounce of strain on her face, nothing to show that she had me manacled with her slim, delicate-looking fingers.

Who – or what – was Evelyn Long?

“He won’t be much longer,” she said, as if commenting on the weather. “He’s been waiting to see you for more than a month now. We’re both glad you visited.”

And I suddenly realised that nobody knew where I was. Long and his supernaturally strong wife could do whatever they wanted with me, dispose of my dead body no doubt in the acres of primeval jungle behind their house and nobody would be the wiser. A wave of energy suddenly thrummed beneath my feet, a surge so strong I was sure that Long’s wife was able to feel it pulse through my body and travel to hers at our menacing point of contact.

“Why don’t I get you something to drink? You can relax while I fetch Alfred.”

**Do you there is trouble ahead when you go alone on a supernatural call**

EXCERPT

Kay gave Storm an amused look. “In some ways this feels more familiar than watching TV with my wife. ”

They were separating from Ram and Rev, going opposite ways in an alley. Storm looked back over his shoulder at Ram and Rev walking away. On a whim he called out, “Sol!” Without hesitation, Rev turned and said, “Yeah?”

The four of them stood frozen, Storm and Rev staring at each other, Kay and Ram looking back and forth between the two. Let it never be said that Ram didn’t know how to handle a situation delicately. “What the fuck, Stormy?”

“You know, that’s a good question, Ram. And well put.” Storm didn’t take his eyes off Rev.

“Something you want to tell us.”

Rev pursed his lips before growling. “No.”

“You sure?”

“You gone hard of hearing?”

Storm’s gaze was a concentrated challenge, pinning Rev in place, but he moved in close enough for quiet conversation.

“How about clueing us in, brother,” Kay was as calm as the eye of a hurricane as he nudged Storm. “What’s going on here?”

“Has it seemed to you that there are things about the new Sovereign that seem familiar? Eerily so?”

“Like what?” Ram asked as he eyed Rev from top to bottom.

“Oh, like the fact that he smokes the same brand of Turkish cigars that Sol used to smoke. And lights them with an old school fluid lighter. Then he puts the lighter down in front of him and turns it around and around the same way Sol used to.” Kay turned his attention toward Rev and began regarding him with increased interest. “How about the way he screws up his mouth when he’s aggravated or the way he steeples his fingers when he’s making a decision?”

Rev lifted his chin in defiance and narrowed his eyes at Storm. “And let’s not forget the fact that he took a bead on Farnsworth about thirty seconds after arriving Jefferson Unit. Doesn’t it strike you as a little strange that he handles Sol’s job like he knows what he’s doing? No. Not like he knows what he’s doing. Like he’s done it before!”

Ram eased around in front of Rev so that the three veteran members of B Team appeared united as the inquisitors they had just become. They stood in a dimly lit alley with accusation hanging in the air, waiting for Rev to answer.

“Your imagination’s just got the better of you, Sir Storm.”

“There! Right there. I never met another knight who called me Sir Storm. But Sol did.” Storm glanced at Kay. “All the time. Called me Mr. Storm when I was a kid. Switched to Sir Storm when I was inducted.” He stepped closer to Rev. “When I called Sol’s name, you turned around like you’d been answering to that name your whole life.”

Ram and Kay were giving Rev looks that said the questions weren’t going to go away just by staring Storm down. Finally Rev replied with the cool of an iceberg.

“So what are you saying? Exactly? That I’m a body snatcher?”

“What I’m doing right now is asking questions.”

“I don’t have answers for you.”

“NO!” Rev’s answer was a little too forceful and a little too quick.

“Start talking.” Rev blew out a breath and looked around at the alley.

”Let’s go sit down somewhere private.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I’ll buy a round of drinks and tell you a story. Not about me mind you. A story about a guy I heard of.”

Purr-fect Cover Reveal for Purr-fect Mating by Sheryl Winters

This beautiful cover caught my attention and I spent some time just trying to decipher all its elements. What do you think?

The synopsis made me think of a Charmed episode (a TV show about witches and such). A couple were cursed and the guy was an owl by day and the girl was a wolf by night.

Purr-fect Mating by Sheryl Winters hooked me.

Bob at the Lake by R. Murphy

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
 Take a crabby woman of a certain age, move her to the wintry shores of a New York lake, and then throw in a martini-loving ghost from 1920s Manhattan. Last, stir in the good-looking grape grower who lives up the hill. Now there’s a recipe for a potent screwball cocktail!
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

“Trust me, it will hit you like a brick of gold.”

 That’s Bob. He’s my ghost. Well, not my ghost since I’m sitting here writing, but the ghost who lives with me. Other women probably get muscleman ghosts who can fix plumbing and take out the garbage, or romantic ghosts who set their hearts a-flutter. Me, I get a ghost who’s middle-aged, plump, and who likes to lounge around the house in a silk smoking jacket from the nineteen-thirties. Not exactly the kind of ghost I’d ever imagined I’d get. I will admit, though, that Bob does make an amazing martini. A martini that, in fact, hits you like a brick of gold.

I found, unfortunately, the longer Bob lived at my place, the more I appreciated his skill with martinis. Which was probably not a great thing for my liver, or my relationships with my sisters, but what the heck.

Remember the Great Recession? According to the newspapers, some consumers seem to be wiping it from their memories, but it had a big impact on a lot of people, including me. That economy hurt. Lost jobs, lost houses, lost marriages, lost hopes—lives turned upside down in the flutter of a pink slip. People scrambling just to keep from drowning—couch surfing, penny pinching, living newly frugal lives.

Like millions of others, the economy sucked me into its undertow…

MY REVIEW OF BOB AT THE LAKE

“Trust me, it will hit you like a brick of gold.”

That’s Bob. He’s my ghost.

So, here she sits – with Bob – drinking the golden martini he just made her.

 ~~~~~~
The cover is such fun and the blurb put a smile on my face in this, not your usual, ghost story. I felt this would be rollicking good fun and I was not disappointed. I was smiling while reading along, but when they met, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. The story and writing are humorous and uplifting. The setting is in the Finger Lakes region of New York, of which I am very familiar. I lived in the area for ten years and love it when I can imagine myself in the characters place.
I thought of Casper the Ghost and the Ghost of Mrs. Muir. Bob is a fun, whimsical ghost that doesn’t take life seriously. Why should he? He’s a ghost. He has a mission and when it is done, he will move on.
Sooooo, come and join me on a ghostly adventure that will having you laughing and crying, singing and dancing, leaving you with a good feeling when you are done.
She moved to her summer home on Crooked Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York after losing her nine to five job. I laughed when she talked about her feelings of isolation. Anyone moving to a remote area like this after living in a big city would have an adjustment period, if they ever did adjust.
I read a lot of mysteries and watch lots of TV shows about murder and serial killers, as did the character. Just imagine, sitting in the dark on an isolated winter lake, alone, knowing no one and used to hearing the sounds of the big city. The silence can be an enemy, leaving you jumping at every creak of the house. I can and do have experiences where my imagination runs wild and spooks me. I laugh at myself, as I make sure the doors and windows are locked and the blinds are all closed, so it was easy to step into her shoes and call for Bob. After all, a ghost is better than nobody.
She is not a spring chicken and has been around the block a time or two. She is a freelance business writer and works hard to do her work justice, going above and beyond. So she had some way to make money.
She wonders, How do writers support themselves? She thinks each chapter of a book should start out with – How I Paid the Bills while writing this Chapter or how to cut eating expenses – take one package of ramen noodles…. I liked that R slipped things like this into the book, things I was already curious about.
Her descriptions of the characters brought them to life. I loved them all, even the bitter old neighbor lady.
Their road trips are an adventure and I am exhausted and ready to return home myself.
I felt sad when she talked of her dad and like real life, I don’t want to think about that. I read every wonderful word anyway.
Oh no. The book is over but the story isn’t.
R Murphy writes of high and lows, life and death, laughter and sadness – life – in a highly entertaining, easy to read novel that had me captivated from beginning to end.
Writerly Workouts?
 Roz here:
 As anyone who’s read my debut novel Bob at the Lake knows, I’m a very reluctant exerciser. Squabbles with Bob (the ghost who lives with me), Finger Lakes wines, and homemade cookies are my pastimes of choice and it takes a lot to levitate my (somewhat oversized, I admit) butt out of a chair to work up a sweat. Luckily, though, I live in a house surrounded by hills, and they provide an amazing workout anytime I want one.
The only thing that pushes my butt up those hills is music. Hard, driving music. This morning, motivated by an article about the work habits of creative people and stunned to see how many writers include vigorous workouts in their lives, I’ve decided to goose up my hillwalking routine. That means, of course, that I have to goose up my music.
For fun, I thought I’d share some of the hyper-pumping songs I’ve added to my new Playlist entitled: “Butt up Hill.” (Bob hates this music. He can be an old fuddy-duddy sometimes. He’d rather I work out to the tunes of Irving Berlin or George Gershwin. Don’t get me wrong–I love Bob’s musical selections. They’re just not going to achieve my exercise mission: ‘butt up hill.’)
So here you go: Five musical selections guaranteed to push your heinie up a steep incline…
1) Kenny Loggins, “Footloose”
2) Bay City Rollers, “Saturday Night”
3) Lady GaGa, “The Edge of Glory”
4) Cast of Glee version, “Party All the Time”
5) Tina Turner, “The Best”
I’d love to get any reader recommendations for songs that might fire up a reluctant workout queen to put on her sneakers and hit the hill. Please add them below or join me on Roz Murphy Author on Facebook. I look forward to checking out your suggestions!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
MEDIA_KIT_roz_murphy_(2)Roz Murphy is the pseudonym of a shy, retiring writer who doesn’t want her neighbors to know how nutty she really is. Brooklyn-born and Jersey-bred, Roz now lives on the misty shore of one of New York’s beautiful Finger Lakes. Prior to that, her business writing career took her to many locations, including Manhattan, where she worked for a number of years. As a freelance and corporate writer, Roz won several national and international writing and communications awards.
Now Roz is pursuing her first love—fiction. She’s writing the ‘Bob’ books, the humorous chronicle of a crabby ‘woman of a certain age’ who moves to the wintry shores of a New York lake—and gets a ghost. And not just any ghost, mind you. Bob’s a plump, middle-aged ghost from 1920s Manhattan who swans around in a silk smoking jacket and drinks far too many martinis. Stir the good-looking grape grower who lives up the hill into this mix and you get a pretty potent screwball cocktail!
When she’s not reading, writing, hill-walking, staring mindlessly out the window at the lake or piling rocks onto her ever-diminishing lakefront, you can usually find Roz hanging out with her family, travelling, or exploring the amazing wines and wineries of the Finger Lakes.
‘Bob at the Lake’ is exclusively available as a Kindle download from Amazon. Please join Roz Murphy Author on FaceBook for updates on the many adventures of Roz, David—and Bob.
