SYNOPSIS

Take a journey into the gritty world of political espionage through the eyes – and lies – of one extraordinary girl. A wholly original tale of friendship and betrayal from the author of The Jane Austen Academy series….

Sasha has a secret – that she can make you spill your secret with nothing more than a question. Her strange gift makes her a burden to her foster family and a total freak of nature. Not that Sasha cares. Why should she when no one cares about her?

Then the CIA knocks on her door. They want to give Sasha a new identity and drop her into a foreign country to infiltrate a ring of zealous graffiti terrorists. They want to give Sasha something to care about.

To survive a world where no one is who they seem, Sasha needs to make people trust her. But when that trust blossoms into love, Sasha is forced to decide between duty and friendship, between her mind and her heart, and whether to tell the truth or keep her secrets.

FBI Field Office, Atlanta, Georgia

I’ve studied Chelsea since the FBI teamed us up when I was twelve. She has a move…classic Chelsea. She turns the doorknob and her body stiffens, a metal rod shoved down her spine. As she sets a high heel inside the interrogation room, her southern accent and soft manners are buried beneath a terrifyingly sleek, blond exterior in a perfectly pressed pinstriped suit.

Four years of practice, two custom-cut suits of my own, and I still look epileptic when I try to project that sense of total control. Of I’ve got this. Even though I don’t have her drawl and my posture’s not bad.

I follow Chelsea, stiff as can be, into the room with the bright white walls. Our sicko suspect glances up from the steel table in its center. I flinch at his chilling stare. Flinching already, see. A slow smile bulges his cheeks as he studies me. Attention from a guy in an orange jumpsuit sitting at a steel table—to which he is handcuffed—is what Chelsea would officially term an undesirable outcome. More undesirable—me showing I care. Like she always says, “Don’t let ’em see you sweat, hon.”

No way am I giving this psycho the satisfaction. I suppress a shiver as the air conditioning kicks on with a groan. Tiny goosebumps break out on my forearms, raising the fine hairs to attention. Can’t rub myself warm—that’s a tell. Instead, when Chelsea slides into one of the fold-out metal chairs across from him, I follow her lead and take comfort in her giraffe-like posture in the chair next to mine.

Chelsea tosses a manila folder so that its contents spill across the table. The file details his alleged heinous crimes, the FBI’s efforts to track him, and the blood evidence in his garage that matches that of the latest missing girl—Georgia State art major, vegetarian, and more important to the suits, daughter of a local bigwig. Funny, the things you remember from a file when they have nothing to do with the case, like how she specialized in collages. They’d found cut-up pieces of magazines littered across the desk and floor of her dorm room. The pieces trailed into the hall like flower petals down a church aisle.

The strewn high-gloss photos of his suspected victims—his own personal collage of the young, female, and carved—don’t solicit a cringe from him when I can barely hold down my water and I’ve been staring at them for weeks. My gaze flickers to the one-way mirror—a silent promise: We’re gonna nail this freak.

“I’m FBI Agent Chelsea Tanner. This is my partner. How are you this evening?”

This is normally when a suspect will ask, with understandable outrage, why I’m party to the interrogation because aren’t I, at almost sixteen, too young to be in the FBI? Pinstriped suit or not, I look my age, maybe even a year or two younger because I’ve always been small—childhood malnutrition will do that to a girl.

It’s the suspects who don’t care that I’m in the room who worry me. Like this guy, whose pale eyes flicker to my throat.

I fight the urge to shift, even to clench my fingers tight into a fist. I don’t blink.

“Fine weather we’re having this winter.” Chelsea manages not to smirk at our sitting in a windowless room. Her face is unbreakable. “These are perfect skies for a getaway. Do you have plans for the weekend?”

When he doesn’t answer, she shares our itinerary—a leisurely drive to Savannah to visit her mother at their family wintering home. Yes, that’s a thing. The trip always involves mint juleps and wide-brimmed hats, not that Chelsea shares the finer details. A genteel background rarely earns cred with criminals.

She chit-chats as if he’s not imagining the slice of his boning knife into my neck. The careful incision he would carve against the clavicle, removing the flat bone from the ligaments attached to the shoulder. I don’t need my unique magic to know what’s on his mind. Some things in the case file stick for a reason.

My bone structure fascinates him. His gaze caresses my cheekbones, roams over the bridge of my nose, dips into the hollow of my neck, and brushes the stray dark corkscrew curls that drape over my sternum.

Don’t move. Don’t blink. Don’t even breathe.

“Savannah’s so beautiful this time of year. Any time of year. I go as often as I can. Don’t you think you should make time for family?” The word rolls off her tongue in three syllables, a rare ray of southern shining through her otherwise stiff facade.

Fah. Mil. Lee.

He closes his eyes as though in prayer. When he opens them, his pupils dilate to nearly black and he rubs his thumbs over his knuckles. He does not take the bait.

Come on, Chelsea. You work your magic and I’ll work mine.

That’s our deal. She gets them talking. I make them spill their guts.

INTERVIEW with Cecilia Gray

Tell us about DRAWN.

AWN is about Sasha, a girl who has the strange ability to make people tell the truth and because of that ability, she’s been abandoned by her parents and studied and used by the government. When the story opens, she’s being reassigned to work overseas with an undercover CIA agent who has a daughter – Sasha’s age – who doesn’t know the truth about her CIA father or what Sasha does. Sasha has to use this girl in order to complete her mission and lines start to blur between her mission and her cover, between what is real and true and what is a lie, and what Sasha is willing to do in order to complete her mission.

It has comic illustrations at the start of each chapter, a fiercely intelligent and independent heroine and despite the paranormal bent to the premise, quite a bit of realistic spy craft.

You’ve also written The Jane Austen Academy series of lighthearted romance-heavy contemporary novels but DRAWN is a dark spy thriller – why the change?

I love stories about girlfriends and girl dynamics, so while The Jane Austen Academy series is romantic contemporary and Drawn is a spy thriller, both stories deal with complicated female relationships and navigating girl dynamics where you aren’t sure how much of yourself to share or how much to trust new friends.

 What kind of research did you do to prepare for DRAWN?

In Drawn, Sasha is assigned to find local graffiti artists and convince them do jobs for her so I took a how-to-graffiti class. It was taught by a real graffiti artist Jeremy Novy who does the coi fish sidewalk graffiti in San Francisco.

He taught negative stencil graffiti which finds the picture by spraying its negative space. So for example, if you want to stencil a donut, you would do it by painting what is NOT the donut. It’s kind of a mind boggling thing for me because I’m a terrible artist and can barely draw what I want to draw, much less not draw what it is I want to draw.

It was also great to get a sense of the teacher’s political feelings and priorities which came out a bit during class and that led me to read up on graffiti artists and watch a few documentaries. While Sasha isn’t a graffiti artist, she interacts with some in the book and I wanted to represent their commitment to this way of life and self-expression.

It was also kind of fun, if nerve racking, to be incognito with a can of spray paint.

Drawn also takes place mostly in Brussels, Belgium and I lived there for a few years when I was the same age as Sasha. A lot of the culture shock she goes through is stolen straight from my life.

 How did you get the idea for DRAWN?

Drawn has a real mix of inspirations. I wanted to write a spy thriller – that was first – and I wanted to write one because I like spy thrillers. I basically wanted Tom Clancy for teenagers, where there was a focus on the mission but also on the character.

My first draft for Drawn had her involved on the ground in infiltrating this foreign country but it became a little too unrealistic. I had to give her ground training that might be fun and exciting, but drew the story away from being a realistic contemporary to a more fantasize spy story. I didn’t want Sasha to be good at martial arts or shooting people.

At the same time, I was developing a little bit of an obsession with graffiti. I live in San Francisco, and there are tons of beautiful graffiti displays around the city – particularly in the Mission District of San Francisco where two entire streets are set aside for graffiti. Sasha happens to not be very in touch with her emotions, so I got to thinking, what if Sasha liked to express her feelings through drawings?

Then, in real life, Egypt was underdoing political turmoil as a result of public reaction to graffiti. One of the subsequent riots even resulted in public takedown of their leader. Those three things combined nailed it for me – that Sasha would draw, that the government would want to take advantage of graffiti artists to incite political turmoil – and that these two elements would clash in Drawn.

Who did the illustrations for DRAWN?

Not me! I’m a terrible artist. I can’t even draw a circle. The comic book illustrations for Drawn were created by Sherry Leak, an incredibly talented artist. I gave her the script as well as scene descriptions and she made all the sketches happen. I also think she did a great job of creating a bit of an unfinished look because the idea is that Drawn’s heroine, Sasha, created the drawings herself in between going to school and working for the FBI, so they aren’t perfectly polished and inked.

Is there a sequel to Drawn? What’s next for you?

Drawn was imagined and written as a standalone, and I really like where I left Sasha at the end of the book, but I have had some grumblings for more stories in this universe so I could see doing a spin-off although I haven’t planned one.

My next release will be the final two books in The Jane Austen Academy series and I’m also working on a dark contemporary thriller for 2015, which thankfully feels like an eternity away.

Thanks for the wonderful interview, Cecilia.

Blurb Blitz Giveaway for the Thriller Lucky Sevens by Cynthia Vespia

Lucky Sevens

by Cynthia Vespia

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 BLURB
 Luca “Lucky” Lucazi is a man who lives for the job, until the job starts to threaten his life. A former Navy Seal, Lucky is ideal as the head of security for Lucky Sevens Casino. But when major names at the casino start falling victim to deadly and suspicious “accidents” Lucky must fight his way through a cast of eccentric characters only Las Vegas could spawn, and his own battle with alcoholism, before his lover Brooklyn – the sweethearted stripper – becomes the next victim. But when Lucky faces off with illusionist Christopher King, endowed with real magic powers, will his luck finally run out?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

The King finally made his appearance almost ten minutes later with a worn out “appear-from-beneath-the-stage” gag that even Lucky knew the mechanics to. The crowd hooted and hollered and The King played off their energy. Lucky could swear he saw the man’s head swelling at that very moment.

They moved right into the next trick from there with King introducing his assistant the Scarlett Sire a.k.a. Shae Stone. Lucky had known Shae for a very long time though as nothing more than pals. She was pretty enough but Shae was too messed up in the head for Lucky’s tastes. She’d been in and out of every show on The Strip. Her name was almost as legendary as Wayne Newton in this town. But the poor girl never realized it was her tits and not her talent that kept her employed. Now in her declining years even those attributes wouldn’t keep her afloat for long.

The house lights went up for a moment and now Lucky could see in full detail The King’s garish wardrobe. He dressed in royal capes and robes like he was a modern day Merlin. Jewels dripped off his neck and his fingers. He even used a scepter in his act instead of the proverbial magic wand.

The King addressed the crowd thanking what he called his “gentry” for coming to watch feats of magic unearthed from long ago. Then he set up an oversized black satin body bag directly beneath his feet.

“Chain my wrists and ankles,” he told Shae.

When Shae missed her cue King went on the verbal attack.

“Lock me up!” he hollered.

She took a double set of handcuffs which she used to bind King’s hands and feet as he asked, or rather demanded.

“Now zip me up.”

Shae lifted the body bag up over King’s head and zipped it closed. King’s muffled voice could still be heard calling out instructions. He asked that a hangman’s noose be set around his neck. The other end of the rope hung from a crane at the top of the stage where a technician waited to start it.

The bagged body of King rose up in the air. The rest of them watched and waited. It was supposed to be a simple escape trick. King would use a hidden key to get out of his binds then slip out from the body bag and appear somewhere else in the theater. Lucky had seen it all before. King was eccentric to say the least but at the moment he looked to be in some sort of trouble.

King’s body twitched like a fish on a hook. Muffled sounds escaped through the satin bag. No one could make out what he was saying. Something had gone horribly wrong, Lucky could sense it.

“He’s suffocating in there!” he stood and shouted.

“It’s part of the act. I’ve seen it before,” Shae told him. “He’s a showman.”

The lack of organization on set truly amazed him. No one seemed to have a clue on where they were supposed to be or what they were supposed to be doing. The professionalism was non-existent and it presented a true problem in trying to get things done, even important things like saving Chris King’s life.

VBT_LuckySevens_CoverBannerLucky turned and stared up at the stage. The body bag had gone still. The crowd had gone wild. Lucky moved on to the stage in a bound and tackled the bag to shake it off the hook.

He felt the body of King inside through the satin covering. He was completely still which was not a good sign. Now that the bag was off the crane a crowd of onlookers from offstage gathered around.

“He’s not going to be inside,” Shae said. “The whole reveal is that when the bag is opened King has vanished and appears out in the crowd or as one of the masked assistants.”

Lucky wasn’t satisfied with that answer. Shae swayed on her heels barely able to stand. She obviously had too much liquor in her to make a sensible decision.

He removed the noose from around the top of King’s neck which took some doing. It was wedged on pretty tight and Lucky tore up his palms on the rope fibers just loosening it alone. Then he produced a small switchblade from his pocket and began cutting at the bag.

“Wait, what’re you doing?” Shae asked. “You can just zip it open.”

“He needs air immediately,” Lucky said. “You people need to stand back.”

Lucky waved his hand at the crew to get them to step backwards. The satin and nylon resisted him fiercely as he tried to cut the bag but he finally punctured it enough with the tip to start hacking away with the teeth of the knife.

Lucky shook his head and then pointed up at the Russian acrobat Fareid.

“You get down here and help me save your hero.”

Fareid squatted down next to Lucky. “What do I do?”

“Help me pull this apart.”

They each grasped a side of the slit Lucky had made in the body bag and pulled. It fought them but they won. As it gave in they produced a large hole in the bag which started to reveal an embroidered belt fitted with a shiny crown buckle.

“That’s him!” Shae shouted.

“Holy shit!” Lucky said, his voice shaking.

They pulled apart the rest of the body bag until King could be removed completely. He was very still and wasn’t breathing. His arms and legs had been cuffed and chained together. Bruising around the wrists was prominent as though he’d been struggling hard against his binds. Lucky feared they hadn’t gotten to King in time and he’d suffered asphyxiation from the noose around his neck.

As much as a pill King had been Lucky couldn’t just leave him to die. He proceeded to induce CPR on King. Chest compression, one-two-three, breathe, back to compressions. He repeated it several times with no response from King.

“Is he dead?” Shae asked.

“Not on my watch,” Lucky told her.

He increased the speed and rate of the compressions. Sweat pulled down from his brow and his lips were parched but Lucky continued with the first aide. Suddenly he was back in the Gulf with a man down. Nobody got left behind, not out there and not now.

“C’mon King,” he said. “You’re too damn egotistical to go out like this.”

Lucky yelled, and he worked, and he willed King to come back. Finally real magic happened. A gasp of air came from King and he started breathing again.

EXCERPT

When the oil stopped flowing death became a game of musical chairs. Accepting isolation over the insanity of anarchy, I remained alone in my fortress of solitude, waiting for the world’s population to drop from seven billion to just under six hundred million, knowing that if I could safeguard my chair then maybe I’d live to see a different, wiser world. Instead, I found myself quarantined against a society gone mad in every sense of the word. After sixteen months of rationing, I was forced to venture out of my prison — and that’s when I met my new companion.

Steve’s other work includes The LOCH — a modern-day thriller about the Loch Ness Monster, The SHELL GAME — about the end of oil and the next 9/11 event, and GRIM REAPER: End of Days — a modern-day Dante’s Inferno which takes place in New York when a man-made plague strikes Manhattan. His best work yet, THE OMEGA PROJECT – was released in August 2013. As an author, Steve has two goals. (Chapter Seven continued)

“No! You don’t understand. You can’t trust anyone. My brother’s well-connected.”

“We need to know if this is really your brother after you. The law’s here to protect you. Besides, didn’t you say if Todd’s caught in illegal or criminal actions, he’d lose his trust fund? And inheritance? That might take him off your back, if we have evidence that could nail him.”

Sarah searched inside one of the drawers on the floor. She brought out a dark green book, only about two inches wide by three inches long. “He didn’t get this.” She tapped it on her palm.

My face must have shown confusion.

“I keep tabs of all the places Todd’s been. Every trip he’s taken and dates.”

“Why?”

“Some of the places he frequents every two, three weeks. At least that’s what my informers reported. I think he has a girlfriend there, or someone special.”

“So, you hired a P. I. to track him? Perfect! We’ll hire the same guy to sleuth for us.”

“We can’t,” she said rather sharply.

My eyes glanced at the bedside clock on the dresser. Almost four thirty. I have to be up already. Bummer. “Why can’t we hire your P. I.?”

“He’s disappeared. I tried to get a hold of Jackson— that’s his name—after I saw your Craig’s List ad, and don’t get mad at this, but I wanted to run a background check on you to be sure you’re a nobody so my brother or anyone else can’t find me. But Jackson’s secretary said he hadn’t reported to work for two weeks, and they didn’t know where he was. Not like him to just up and leave.”

So, she’d tried to do a background check on me. I should have played the same game with her. At least I would have landed with a saner roommate. I thought of Peter Salazar. His brother was a cop but worked as a P. I. now. “I have to get ready for work. Pete Salazar can help.”

“Pete Salazar?”

“The guy at Stay Fit.”

“Ah, the guy who hangs onto your every word.” “He does not.”

“I saw him gawk at you the day I was there.”

“That’s because he mistook you for me, and he was trying to see how alike we looked.”

She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “You’re so blind. Can’t you see he’s all eyes on you?”

It wasn’t that Pete wasn’t cute, what with his shaggy blond hair and deep-set eyes, but ever since my high school sweetheart, Drew, had disappeared to New York and taken my heart with him, this bitter taste in my mouth always came up when my mind wandered to the idea of another boyfriend. Maybe I was one of those destined to be single forever. Like a nun. “Your imagination needs some reining in. Anyway, Pete’s brother can help. He’s a P.I.”

“You should go out with Peter some time. Or, are you still hung up on that rich little boy who ditched you in high school?” How’d she know I was thinking of Drew? My face must be such an open book.

“He didn’t ditch me.” That was what I’d convinced myself. “Do you want to find out who just broke into our place, or not?” I glared at her.

Sarah wrung her hands as though they were wet rags. “Don’t say anything about my family’s history, or that it could be my brother doing this, okay? If word leaks out, Todd could press charges on me for trying to soil his good name. Slander, or something.”

“I’ll be discrete. But you’d better not stay home alone today.”

“I’ll take my laptop and go to the library. I can research on a good alarm company. One with video and sound capture.”

Growing up rich sure kept her abreast of technology and security systems.

“Call my cell when you want to come back here.” The hair on my arms stood when I recalled Sarah’s frightened eyes. “Better clean up that blood on your forehead. How’d you get it, anyway?’

She strode to the doorway, ran her finger on the edge of the door, and displayed the blood on her finger. The burglar must have slammed her head on the edge of the door when he’d tried to drag her out.

But, what had he been trying to do? Besides robbing her? If he’d wanted her dead, he wouldn’t have bothered to get her out of the room. And he’d only stolen her Rolex. And what was that worth? Ten thousand, max? Was it just a warning?

Sarah might not have been telling me everything. She always locked her bedroom door, too. So had she forgotten to lock it last night? Maybe the burglar had the key, but how was that possible? Only Mr. Yamamoto, our landlord, kept the spare ones.

“Sarah, which of your friends have you spoken to since you moved in?” It had only been three weeks. Maybe a snake was disguised as a buddy? Todd could have spun a yarn and offered a reward for Sarah’s whereabouts, especially since his upside amounted to quite a treasure.

“Only Ken and Kaleb—the K brothers, I call them. Oh, and Megan. I’ve known her since forever, all the way back in kindergarten in West Virginia. I hooked up with her a few months back. She wouldn’t have told Todd. She hates him. Even threw up on his head once when we were kids.” She narrowed her eyes. “And you, of course. You know I’m here.”

I let that slide. “And my parents,” I added. Let’s see what she’ll still say to that.

“The K brothers have never met Todd. They work at Bank of America, and I got to know them, maybe a few months back. They’re typical banker types. Clean-cut and do everything above board. Hardly burglar material.”

Back in my room, my clock alarm rang so I excused myself after arranging to meet Sarah back at the apartment during my lunch break so the alarm people could install the security system. I didn’t even ask how she was going to get them here on such short notice that very afternoon; cash could buy quite a few favors. I’d have to let my landlord know, convince Mr. Yamamoto an alarm would raise his apartment’s value. He, too, could be swayed by US currency.

Giveaway and Review for Shattered by Patrick Royal

Mind Shadows I: Shattered

by Patrick Royal

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
The only thing that multi-published, award winning horror author, Tom Elliot, wanted was to move to the country for a change of scenery and relaxation, to a quiet part of southern Illinois. It seemed he’d picked out a wonderful spot, miles away from the closest neighbor and even further away from civilization.
Tom couldn’t write to save his soul. Weird thoughts trampled through his head and left him wondering if he’d made a mistake moving from Chicago. Could it have been that he ripped himself from his element, like his best friend, Michael Gully, had predicted? That he couldn’t answer yet.
Words came and flowed like wildfire, but at what price? Tom’s imagination was getting the best of him and running rampant. The very characters that he created tormented him, driving him mad where he couldn’t distinguish fiction from reality.
 EXCERPT
A moan drifted from the next room and teased Tom’s ear. Stopping to listen, he struggled to figure out what he’d heard. He stepped slowly into the living room. A woman stood with her back toward him. His heart thudded fast.
The woman moaned. Her long-fitted skirt hugged her hips, and a pleated white shirt. On the floor by her feet lay droplets of blood.
Tom peeped around the woman’s body and caught a glance of her face. “Lady, who are you? Why are you in my house?” he asked and widened his eyes.
VBT_Shattered_CoverBannerTom still faced the woman’s back, and she wept a bit harder. “You should know why I’m here,” she said in a soft but shaky voice. She turned around, faced him, and quickly threw her arms out in front of her. Blood trickled and dripped onto the floor from deep slits across both wrists. In her hand she held a yellow hair ribbon.
Tom’s jaw dropped open and he stumbled back, widening his view. “Oh my God. Wha…?”
The woman stepped closer to him and held her arms out with her wounds still dripping blood. Her body projected forward, as if traveling in flash.
“You did this! You killed my daughter, and you made me what you see.” She shoved her bloody wrists toward Tom.
“No, no. You’ve made a mistake,” Tom screamed and backed away from her. He clung to the wall with his legs weakening and his hands trembling.
The woman stood and laughed hysterically.
MY REVIEW
What if everything you wrote came to life?
~~~~

I love the cover and plot of this novel. I became so engrossed, I didn’t have time to write any notes. I think that is a good thing, because I do not want to give anything away.

Every time I read the title, I become misled, thinking the book is about a broken heart or failed romance. Not so. Look at the cover and it will dispel that idea. Read the book and the cover defines itself even more.

I thought I had an idea of where the book was going, but Patrick Royal did a fantastic job of twisting and turning the plot, leaving me in doubt. The depth of the horror and terror that Tom was going through kept me bouncing back and forth between reality and insanity.

I couldn’t tell if it was real or all in his mind.

Did Tom’s isolation lead him off the deep end?

 It is amazing what the mind is capable of and Shattered is a great example of a human brain’s ability to take us down a path we may not want to go.

Michael, Tom’s best friend came running when the shit hit the fan. He would do anything to help his friend.

The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat.

The ending totally blew me away. I never saw it coming until it was here, the very last paragraph.

I think my jaw dropped open. Then I laughed, as if I was the crazy person.

Excellent job, Patrick, and I can hardly wait to read more of your work.

About Author Jessica O’Gorek
.

I was born in Chesapeake, Virginia on April 19th, 1979. I was raised within the American Indian religion and was taught great respect for the earth and all its living beings. Powwows, sweat lodges, vision quests, you name it, I’ve done it. I was the weird kid who would confront kids on the playground in elementary school when they squished a bug. I would very sincerely tell them what they were doing was morally wrong and then I would pray for the bug to come back as a butterfly in its next life.

I grew up admiring my father, Barry Weinstock, as an author. He took me around the country to different places so he could research and write his Wilderness Survival books. One of his greatest works, “The Path of Power,” was written with a great medicine man, Sunbear. When I was twelve I started hand writing novels. My first one was two thousand pages. My dad always encouraged me and would rave about my writing. He gave me the confidence I needed to keep writing and follow my dream. My daughter, who is twelve, is currently working on her first novel. I hope to continue the legacy.
