Nature runs AMOK – Wild Times on Skidaway Island by Karen Dove Barr

VBT_Wild_Times_on_Skidaway_Island_Banner_copyI am very happy to be a part of the tour for Wild Times on Skidaway Island by Karen Dove Barr.

I have so much to share that I hope you will take a leisurely tour through the post and enjoy all that Karen Dove Barr and I have to offer for your enjoyment today – Guest Post, Excerpt and My Review.

I have a small collection of travel books. Before going to a new place, I always buy a book to learn as much as I can and find the photo op places of choice.

The cover immediately drew me in and when I read that Skidaway Island is a part of Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest, I became intrigued.

I lived in Atlanta, Georgia for two years and loved it. I never made it to Skidaway Island, but if I had read this book while there I would have made it a point to visit.

Wild Times on Skidaway Island

by Karen Dove Barr

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 SYNOPSIS
Wild Times on Skidaway Island, Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest, details life in a unique Audubon-designated, ecologically friendly refuge. There, golfers pitch balls around endangered great blue herons, mama raccoons march their babies across backyard decks where once Guale Indians trapped ancestors of the same raccoons, and residents dodge alligators and rescue snakes.
Even the vegetation is wild. Three hundred-year-old oaks dripping Spanish moss and poison ivy surmount an under-story of wax myrtle and holly. Carolina jasmine, Cherokee roses, and endangered orchids grow wild in the rain forest. The book examines choices residents make when stared down by a bald eagle, when a red-tailed hawk mistakes a golf ball for bird food, when wakened at midnight by deer munching hibiscus. Wild Times on Skidaway Island educates about the species that residents must adapt to on this historic island.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

GUEST POST

Why did Karen choose to write about this particular island?

            Skidaway Island has been my home since 1989.  When I first crossed the causeway and bridge to the island I didn’t know quite what to expect, even though I had lived in nearby Savannah for many years.  Development is allowed on only a few of Georgia’s barrier islands.  Skidaway had remained unbridged and mostly uninhabited in modern times.

A dappled herd of white-tailed deer grazed on the banks of the lagoon just inside the North Gate on my first trip to Skidaway Island, like shills for the real estate company. The saleslady neglected to warn that the thunder of hooves would wake us at midnight, when deer munched pots of hibiscus on our wooden deck.

VBT_Wild_Times_on_Skidaway_Island_Book_Cover_Banner_copyAfter we built the house a mama raccoon descended from the fronds of a palm tree and marched her trio of kits across the wide back deck while we watched, open-mouthed.

I didn’t know the history of the island; only that James Oglethorpe left a few of his original settlers on Skidaway Island when he landed in Georgia in 1733.  All the settlers died or left.

After Georgians struck down the English trustees’ prohibition against slavery men and women from Africa were brought to Skidaway and remained there for nearly one hundred years. By the end of the nineteenth century almost all were gone.

We built our house on land ringed by giant oaks but the center of our lot contained only dense, new-growth pine.  Traces of an abandoned dirt road crossed one edge.  When we dug our footings, we found shards of blue and white china.  And when I moved in the spirits of previous residents filled our rooms.

Wild Times on Skidaway Island  lets the world share the facts I’ve learned about this beautiful but sometimes uninhabitable  place.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
I chose this excerpt because it had me cracking up as I read it.
When Walt and Carol Culin topped their house at The Landings with a coated metal roof they were confident the roof would be problem-free for a hundred years.  Walt’s contacts as head of an industrial coating company helped him get the latest technology.  Even a hurricane shouldn’t destroy their unusual–looking roof.
But nothing in Walt’s Princeton-educated background prepared him for dryocopus pileatus, the pilated wookpecker.
Male pilated woodpeckers are fixated on the notion that female woodpeckers are attracted to the stud with the noisiest pecker. Usually the woodpecker has to be content with drumming on a hollow tree to resonate his sound. Walt and Carol’s metal roof, however, raised the bar for the local woodpecker population.  Walt and Carol were regularly awakened by mate-seeking woodpeckers as soon as they moved into the house.
Walt ended up having to make a run to Toys ’R Us for rubber snakes. Glued to the chimney alongside a big fake owl, the snakes allowed Walt and Carol to catch some winks in the early morning during woodpecker mating season.
MY REVIEW
What can I say? If you are a traveler that does your research before taking a trip, this is a book you will want to add to your collection before visiting Skidaway Island, Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest.
Karen Dove Barr made me think of Cape Cod as I read the book.
I could feel the mud oozing through my toes as she talked of the mucky river bottom. It has a very distinctive aroma, not pleasant, but all of us water lovers learn to love it. I always wonder what critters are under the muck waiting to nibble on my toes.
I could picture the kayakers riding the waves, the bikers pedaling through the scenic pathways, the noreasters blowing and the liquor smugglers trying to bring their wares to the thirsty residents without being caught by the man.
Skidaway Island Oceanographic Institute would be a must see on anyone’s list. The Oceanographic Institute is a 700 acre campus that is part of the University of Georgia. Photo from Skidaway Island Oceanographic Institute website.
The Island differs greatly from the Cape when it comes to the vegetation. The towering oaks can be over 100 years old, with massive branches that create an umbrella of shade . Even on the hottest days you can take some comfort in their embrace.
The critters abound and I love all nature’s gifts, from the flying squirrel, to the pesky deer trying to eat all your beautiful flowers. There are those irritating raccoons and even bobcats spying on whatever comes to the bird feeder. There are opossum, river otters, minks, rabbits, fox, bats and feral pigs.
Birdwatchers will love the abundance of flying creatures. The crows look down as if we are the novelty. I laughed when Karen talked about coming up on a snake while biking. It was actually an anhinga anhinga, a snakebird. Eagles have returned to Skidaway Island, so the residents must be doing something right. When you visit you may be lucky to have a Bald Eagle sighting yourself. Pilated woodpeckers – I have always wanted to see one of these. They remind me of a pterodactyl.
I love birds, but my favorite creatures have to be found in the water. And Skidaway Island does not lack for the variety, large and small, to be watched and photographed. They even have the knobbed whelk as their official state shell. How cool is that? There are also all the little critters that live in reeds and muck. For those weak at heart, you might want to wear your water shoes.
Skidaway Farms is a cooperative for growing vegetables, trying to keep the wildlife from farm-art-023dining before the residents. There is a children’s garden and they even have a fall festival. Photo from Skidaway Farms website.
The flowers and vegetation are all around you, vibrant and in some instances protected, such as the green orchid, one of the few orchids to be able to endure frosty weather.
I became enamored with Skidaway Island. As Karen talked of her home, I was kayaking, (but not running, walking), biking, fishing, swimming, and just enjoying nature’s bounty. What a fantastic environment to be in. People just need to remember, it is nature’s home, we are the visitors.
Karen – your book made we want to jump in my car and cruise on up to Skidaway Island!
BLURB
When Emma Grant returns to her family’s Audubon Springs beach house to fulfill the stipulations of her father’s will, she has every intention of forcing her former lover out of the house for good. She’s never fit into her wealthy family and would prefer avoiding her past, but with her brother threatening to reveal her young daughter, she has no choice.
Rafe Iuliano has other plans. The wealthy Grants tried to bribe him out of Emma’s life years ago, but he’s determined to prove once and for all that a master carpenter is worthy of Emma and the house.
Their ridiculous and steamy battle for the house reignites the love and passion that bloomed between them years ago. But when Rafe discovers she’s kept their daughter a secret for two years, can he overcome anger and pride to claim his family and the love of his life, or will the deception drive a final wedge between them?
 ~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Emma would have looked adorable in the simple snug tank top and Bermuda shorts if it weren’t for the look of utter horror on her face.

“Have you lost your mind?” she screamed.

“Yes!” He turned off the saw, threw it on the ground, whipped off his protective goggles and tossed them as well. “Why do you ask?”

“You cut a massive hole in the back door!”

“This here is an example of our differences. You see a hole. I see a home improvement project. This is no ordinary square hole in a door, this is a doggie door.” He pushed on the large piece of cut wood until it fell and landed on the pantry floor inside with a loud clap.

“It’s about three times the size of a doggie door,” she stated flatly.

“Yeah, but I’m the dog. So Princess, what do you think?”

SBB_Return_to_Audubon_Springs_Book_Cover_Banner_copy“I think you are insane.”

“I AM insane! You have MADE me insane! You threw all my stuff out front. You used my underwear for rags!”

“I couldn’t find anything else.”

“There is a basket full of rags in there.”

“None of them fit the occasion,” she said with a straight face.

“I must have lost my mind because that almost makes sense.” He gestured to the door. “Ladies first.” When she stared unmoving, he climbed through the cut door and opened it. “Just for the record, a caveman would have made you climb through.”

“Just for the record, I only changed the locks on the front door.”

One thing CAN change your life forever – The Thief Redeemer by Leigh Clary Abdou

The cover of The Thief Redeemer made me want to pick up the book and find out what is happening.

The silhouette made me curious, wanting to know – who is he?

goodreads-badge-add-plus

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marcus and I are car thieves and we are very good at what we do. It is a game to me and I am addicted to the rush.
I find the car and he gets us in.
I am the brains and he is the muscle.
Atlanta-Hotlanta is more appropriate.
My biggest mission in life, though, is finding my brothers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Thief Redeemer by Leigh Clary Abdou is hard to classify. Brandon is a first class car thief. His main goal in life is to find the brothers that were taken away because he was unable to care for them.

Brandon’s plan is to use Claire to infiltrate Birch’s law office and find the files for his brothers. Birch has been after him for a long time and he was going to turn the tables on him. It was a vendetta that Brandon was determined to win.

Brandon takes it a step further when he decides to kidnap Birch’s daughter. Who does he see when they remove the bag from her head?

He never thinks of redemption until………

Claire Peters has the looks of an angel, a blond beauty. Brandon could feel the goodness radiating off her. Claire drew Brandon in, because she makes him think of good things.She was already falling for him before he kidnapped her. Is it really so far fetched that her attraction to him would grow stronger after the kidnapping?

Brandon is an angry, violent criminal, using fists and guns when fists are not enough. Is he just a punk, selfish and arrogant? A user and taker. Pond scum. Can he change? I was really curious as to how and why he become this way?

One thing can change your life. Good to bad. Bad to good.

Brandon spent years being the leader of the largest car theft ring in Atlanta, then he crosses another line by kidnapping Claire. How can it end good? I can’t figure out how Leigh Clary Abdou will make everything okay, but it is a novel so it should end happy ever after. Right?

Tweety Bird Corvette (c) Sherry Fundin

Tweety Bird Corvette (c) Sherry Fundin

At this point I am halfway through the novel. As I read on, I start to figure it out and race through the pages to see if I am right.

It didn’t end when I thought it would. Super. Leigh Clary Abdou added another element to the The Thief Redeemer. I love it.

Would Clair choose the wild card and an unpredictable future or go for the safe and normal. What would you do? Bad boy or good guy? Hmmmmm.

QUOTES

“You’re not a good guy…”

“Doesn’t the human life mean anything to you at all? You spoke of your brothers…what if someone did this to them?”

Always pisses me off watching a show like Criminal Minds or in real life and the criminal feels sorry for himself and his posse, but could care less about anyone else. Why should any mercy be shown when they show none?

“I haven’t felt during the past ten years. Anger and rage have taken over my soul this past decade , and now that I’ve experienced hope and love, I don’t know if I can return to who I’ve been.”

“You will have to make this decision on your own. But I can tell you this. Don’t let the fear of the unknown dictate your future. Sometimes in life we have to take chances. Sometimes these chances have a positive impact, and other times they have a negative impact. You will have to make a decision and let time reveal the answer to you.”

Words to live by in any situation.

“She is the redeemer of thieves.”

Twists, turns and surprises make this book an excellent read. Even more surprising is the quality of the writing and the detailed story that kept me engrossed from beginning to end and this is a debut novel. Job well done Leigh. I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next.

I love how Leigh integrated the library and books into this debut novel – The Thief Redeemer.

I received this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
During the next six weeks Marney created some of the most spectacular jewelry she’d ever designed. Though she normally worked day and night when she was in creation mode, with Dell coming over for supper every evening, she found it easy to quit when he arrived. Some days he brought food. Some days she made food. Other days they ordered pizza or Chinese food and had it delivered.
She could have given Charlie back to Gabby, but T.J. was still organizing his Chandler’s Cove office. Boneparte had been overseas since January and didn’t show any signs of coming home so Gabby was grateful that Marney could keep sweet Charlie for a few more weeks. With Dell sleeping at her house until midnight every night that he didn’t work, she felt totally protected. But, frankly, Charlie was the only one Marney could talk to about Dell.
“Remember how I wondered what sleeping with Dell would make me?”
Charlie barked.
“I’ve finally figured it out.”
He tilted his head.
“It makes me happy.”
Charlie barked twice.
She turned off her computer, grabbed her purse and tapped her thighs twice. Charlie raced over and she lifted him into her arms. “You’ve been so sweet over the past six weeks that I’m not making you walk ever again.” She kissed the fur between his ears. “I’m carrying you everywhere.”
At her house, she threw together a simple supper of salad, French fries and thick steaks to be grilled once Dell arrived. At exactly six o’clock, he opened her kitchen door and stepped inside.
He didn’t hesitate. He yanked her to him and kissed her so greedily, her heart about stopped.
Breathless, she pulled away. “Okay. I was going to put the steaks on as soon as you got here but I’m thinking you might be hungry for something else.”
He nuzzled her neck. “I just might be.”
She laughed.
“How about sex first and steak second?
“Sounds good.”
He kissed her again, then scooped her up and took her to the bedroom.
Scripting Change Cover Reveal & Release-day Blast!
Scripting Change Project
The community writing project, Scripting Change, is incredibly excited to announce the release of their inaugural project: Seeing Past Sickness!
Absolutely every piece of this e-book, from the coordination, to the contents, to the beautiful cover art, was volunteered, and 100% of proceeds will be donated to the MSTR Scholarship Foundation.  Read on to find out why!
.
About the Project:
Scripting Change is a new writing initiative that aims to bring together the vast community of writers and readers in support of responsible nonprofit organizations.
The project accepts submissions from writers, relating to a theme that reflects the mission of a chosen nonprofit.  The selected pieces are combined in an anthology, which is published as an e-book, in this case: Seeing Past Sickness.  Proceeds from this and any future e-books’ sales will be donated to the related organization.  Ideally, the project will be repeated, with each e-book supporting a unique nonprofit organization.
By focusing on the compelling words of writers, Scripting Change is able to raise not only funds but also awareness for the causes of the organizations they support.  The time and talents of everyone involved are offered freely, so the project has absolutely no overhead costs, which means every dollar raised is donated to positively impact our society!
About the Nonprofit:
Chronic illness doesn’t disappear at age 18, but aid and understanding for those affected often do, despite the exorbitant and crippling costs of perpetual healthcare. In additional to the emotional and physical toll of chronic illness, those affected face significant challenges in seeking the personal and intellectual development afforded by continuing education.
The recipient organization for Seeing Past Sickness is the MSTR Scholarship Foundation, which aims to help those students affected by chronic illness, who nevertheless have the passion, drive, and determination to seek or continue their educations, by providing financial scholarships in recognition and support of their perseverance.  This decision was based on the impressive mission, fiscal responsibility, and enthusiasm for the project of the MSTR Foundation.
Now It’s Your Turn!
Scripting Change depends entirely upon the support of the community as a whole.  The writers, and our cover designer, have done their part; the coordinators have brought it all together; the bloggers have graciously helped us spread the word – now it’s up to the readers.  We hope you will enjoy the anthology!
Seeing Past Sickness is available through:
Smashwords ~*~ Amazon: US; UK ~*~ Barnes & Noble
 arbitrate Excerpt:
I nearly killed him. I can still feel the weight of the revolver in my hands, the cool feel of the metal against my skin, my finger pulsing against the trigger.
I still want to kill him.
Gads I hate him.
I catch sight of my reflection in the mirror above my dresser and barely recognize what I see. Dark circles under the eyes, unshaven face, expression that screams failure. I hate that guy, too.
I grab the lamp off my nightstand and hurl it into the mirror.
Shards of glass clank everywhere.
It’s oddly therapeutic.
A tall marble glass cat comes to mind. My mother got it for me as a housewarming gift. I stalk out to the living room and seize it. It’s heavy and awkward and the perfect accessory to mayhem.
The bathroom’s my next destination. I flip on the light switch and take a deep breath. Is it so wrong to want something to be more broken than me?
As I slam the cat into the mirror, the falling pieces clang out a musical masterpiece. A single chunk of glass remains hanging, showcasing the smirk on my face. I pry the heavy cat from the broken shards and send it flying through the glass shower door.
The statue lies at the bottom of a mound of glass. I roughly yank it out, cutting my hand in the process. My blood drips, cascading down the mountain of debris like a river of death, pooling at the bottom in a sea of woe born of my grief.
Ignoring the blood and pain I loosely wrap my hand with a towel and then purposefully march into the kitchen. There’s more hatred to unleash, despair to release, anguish to expel.
I target the glass paneled cabinet doors. They’re always collecting dust.
The marble cat helps me beat the crap out of them.
Onward to the living room. I swing and bash and crack until the TV’s beyond fixing.
Crash. Glass coffee table explodes.
Clunk. Sofa table’s in pieces.
I’m looking for my next victim when the front door opens.
My visitor looks at me like I’m a crazy man. I’d plead insanity, but that’d be as big a lie as he told me.
Praise for arbitrate:
“There are a lot of books I finish and feel happy, this one I finished and my head is swirling, in a totally awesome way! Not only does it have a great story with characters that you like (and some you just hate as they are the enemy) but the book also gets you thinking, thinking about the implication of effects of different actions and courses in life. This story has action, fighting, plots and plans, romance, love triangles, family, betrayal – has it all.” –Emily Barton, Emmy Mom One Day at a Time blog, 5 stars
Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner–Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.
Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.
2012 Book of the Year Award Finalist-Young Adult Fiction, ForeWord Reviews
“Sure to win over YA readers looking for a dangerous, dystopian adventure story” —Kirkus Reviews
“Gripping young adult dystopian novel; compelling conflicts; high stakes; powerful narrative; surprises keep coming; strong writing; page-turner; engaging characters; Readers will be hungry for the sequels.”—BlueInk Review (starred review)
“Thomason’s description of Thera’s totalitarianism will make fans of Brave New World shiver… SCI, her fantasy corporation, has disturbing parallels to actual companies and regimes that claim to do good while harming people… The author deftly appeals to both romance-loving teens as well as those intrigued by young adults fighting the establishment.”—ForeWord Clarion Review, 4 stars
Clean by Alex Hughes caught my eye with its cool cover and the futuristic storyline. I mean, a serial killer and a disgraced telepathic, druggie cop – what’s not to like?
I loved when Alex Hughes described Cherabino driving – sky lanes – they don’t use a road and using the siren just because she can. Real cops don’t do that, do they? lol
He picked up the vials, thinking of shooting up. Almost going off the wagon was a bad time to have a precognition. No one would believe he was the next target of the serial killer. No, he won’t, he can’t, but the needle is loaded and heading toward his vein. I kept saying no, no, no. Don’t do it. Just say no! OMG, he’s really gonna do it.
That passage was the most involved I was in the book. The rest of the story just didn’t grab me. I can’t really say anything was wrong with Clean and I really thought I would love it. It was well written and the story flowed smooth, maybe it was just one of those days. You know what I mean. I am very glad to have read it and want to read more about Mindspace Investigations.
