Do you believe in visions?

I love that the story starts out with Alex up a tree.

Her hand begins to itch, the urge to draw overwhelms her. She was hiding from the two Tree woman Pictures, Images and Photosmen, but she heard a sound that made her look. She saw only one man on the dock and felt the urge to run, trying to keep out of sight. She didn’t know, but Jelly, the chauffeur, had seen her.

As soon as she got home, she sat down and began to draw, her hand moving on its own. It seemed it only happened when violence  was near.

Storm DamageAlex was living on the island with her Aunt Chicora , because a tree had fallen on her house during a storm.

She ran into Connor, the prosecutor, at the restaurant. He convinced her to join him for dinner. Rollins had followed her there, with Jelly. Rollins was the man she had seen alone on the dock. His plan was to take care of her now.

She had no idea how much dinner with Connor would change her life forever.

“An enigma wrapped in a riddle”

I loved the cover. The colors and photograph captured my eye. I must confess, I do choose a lot of the books I read by the cover first. The title is appropriate and catchy .

I have a special fondness for trees. I am amazed at the number of books I choose that have a tree on the cover in some way, shape or form.

I fell into the book and couldn’t climb out until the last page was read. I really thought that was how it would be, before I even opened the cover. It has all the elements for a good book.  A woman in distress, yet she is strong, loving, and forgiving. She has friends around her. The bad guys are after her. And she finds a man and his dog to ride off into the sunset with. Throw in some psychic abilities, numerous plot lines and characters, and you have a hit.

I read it in one sitting and it was every bit as entertaining as I thought it would be. The book was well written and Ellis kept the action rolling from cover to cover. I am eager to read more exciting stories from this wonderful author.

I won this book in a giveaway on fuyonlyknew’s blog. I love to add signed, first editions to my book collection. Thank you Laura, at fuyonlyknew, and Ellis for having the giveaway.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ellis VidlerAs a child in the South, Ellis spent long, hot days imagining herself an Indian or pioneer or musketeer. At night she (and her whole family) read. From Tarzan and D’Artagnan to Anne Shirley and Nancy Drew, she lived them all. No angst in her childhood. So what did she do as an adult? Write fiction, what else? She loves creating characters and making them do what she wants, but mostly they take off on their own and leave her hurrying to catch up.

All her stories have some degree of romance and a lot of suspense. Time of Death, a suspense novel about a psychic artist who sees too much, was released in November. And before that, Cold Comfort, her new romantic suspense. Her first book, published by Silver Dagger Mysteries, was Haunting Refrain. The second was The Peeper, a suspense novel co-authored with retired LEO Jim Christopher. (He’s a terrific storyteller!)

Ellis is an author, editor, and speaker. She grew up in North Alabama, studied English and art at All Saints College for Women, and thoroughly enjoyed studying creative writing under the great Scott Regan. She taught elements of fiction at a community college. Her home is now the South Carolina Piedmont with her husband and dogs. Click here to contact Ellis.

Ellis is currently working on a new book that’s set in North Carolina, tentatively titled Fade Out. She hopes to finish it this summer. It is more like Cold Comfort. Nothing psychic in this one.

  1. I would presume from your review and blog that Alex was up the tree because she was either hiding or trying to get away from it all. When I was growing up there was a dogwood outside my bedroom window. I would climb up with my 8 volt transistor radio and listen while I would read or daydream. It was a regular hangout, so to speak, for me. I knew every limb by heart. Thanks Sherry! Lots of love, Emily

  2. Hi Sherry! You are not helping my TBR list at all. LOL
Well you gave away the answer to your question! She was hiding from someone(s). BUT I will try to entertain you either way with my own story. I have a fondness for trees myself and loved climbing them and hiding out in them as a kid. Usually, to escape and to hide out during catechism classes at church, which I did not like to go to. Once the kids walked home from the class, I would climb out and go home and pretend I had been to the class. My parents never caught on until a sea quake hit Lisbon (where I am from and grew up for 10 years), and since we were close to the beach the tremor was felt on shore…. AS I was hanging out in my tree. I lost my balance and fell and broke my leg. I had some explaining to do. 🙁

    Thank you for the review!!!

    Lily

    • Yeah, you caught that about the question. HA HA. Good one.

I loved your story. Had me laughing so hard my tummy hurt. Sorry about the sea quake and I know your broken leg had to really hurt, but the story is kinda funny.^_^

    • Lily, what a way to get caught! I don’t think I was ever spotted making the top of the tree sway, and it’s a good thing. I’d have been grounded for months. Thanks for commenting.

  3. This was my first books of hers. I have one other that I can’t wait to start. I love her work so far, and I don’t think she will disappoint me. Thanks, Emma. Good luck, maybe you can pick this one up here. ^_^

  5. My guess is because that’s where she lives now 🙂 A tree can’t fall on your house if the tree is your house 🙂 or she was trying to get her cat out of the tree. I picture the girl upside-down like The Ugly Truth…screaming her head off and the handsome stranger rescues her 🙂

    Thank you for the giveaway,

      • Cassandra, that comment was hilarious. Thank you very much for entertaining me. Some of these comments have me rolling on the floor. Hey Ellis, I’m not very good with pinterest either, but I have started using it. I think it will be cool, if I can every figure it out. lol

      • Hey Ellis, I checked out your pinterest collection and will have to look at them further. They are some cool treehouses and I will have to add some to my boards. Thanks for the heads up.

    • Hi Cassandra. I sent you an email. I need to hear back from you about your win of The Samantha Project. I will send you another email to get your info. Please be on the lookout for it. I haven’t read the book, but it looks like a really good one. On my TBR list.

  8. I think she was hiding from the man Rollins she seen on the dock, because she had a vision and didn’t even know she really had , when she got the itchin in her hand and had the urge to draw and it felt like it wasn’t her. I think she knew she was in danger without knowing but she probaby drew it afterwards.like she said it only happens when violence is near.

    • Lori, good explanation and very insightful! Her subconscious feeling of danger was probably an important factor, one I hadn’t thought about. Thanks for sharing your idea. I’ll remember it.

      • Thanks ellisv , thats the 1st thing i thought about when i read do u believe in visions and then how her hand began to itch and she didn’t understand why except she always had that overwhelming feeling to draw. Sounds like to me she has a gift.

        • Yes, she does. It may be a gift or a curse, depending on your point of view. She sees only violence, so it’s not usually a happy gift–except once when she was able to save someone.

          • I do agree could be a curse depends on the situation. But it seems to save her, alerting her to danger I’d say a bit of both gift/ curse. But some bad always comes with the good right? Then again I haven’t read the book I dont no what het destiny holds afterchr dinner, I’m very curious now.

    • Hmmm. Was the moon full? Perhaps the witches and warlocks came tearing in with the coming storm, calling the bearfish from the sea to carry out their evil wishes. Ya think?

  9. This sounds like a job for .,… Poetry Man! (aka: acwa(at)netscape(dot)com)
    Alex climbed up the tree
To see what she could see.
But all that she could see
Was the way back down the tree!
    (Thank you very much.)

    • Oh, love it! You put a smile on my face this morning. I like your dog with his one black eye too. You can see mine on Facebook.

    • The cat in the hat? Maybe the cat with a rat? That could send me scrambling up a tree in a hurry. 🙂 Always fun to see what everyone comes up with. Thanks, Margie.

    • Alex has books in every room in her house too. 🙂 But she often takes a book with her to the tree.
My house is going to collapse under all the books. I love eBooks for just that reason.
