Caroline and Mordecai the Gand

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Jeff Gunhus writes some fabulous horror novels and when I saw this one in his newsletter I realized it was different than what I was used to from him. It is personal, written from the heart, and I LOVED IT. Caroline & Mordecai The Gand sends a subtle message through a fabulous adventure with a girl that wants things to be like they were before her father died.

Thirteen year old Caroline lost her father, her friend, and her grief is overwhelming. She does have her mother, who has her own struggles with her own loss, Abby and her Aunt Betty, but nothing fills the void.

When she fell from the tree, she entered a world that would open her eyes as she finds her way through her sorrow. Her adventure will take her back to herself.

I feel this is a book everyone who has suffered a loss would benefit from. Even in sadness there is happiness, smiles with the tears…

May you feast on your dreams

If you check out Jeff Gunhus, you will see why this book came to be. It may be a middle grade read, but I feel it holds a wonderful message for us all.

GOODREADS BLURB

Caroline loses her spark. It takes a great adventure for her to find it again.

When Caroline loses her father in a car accident, she can’t shake the feeling that it was her fault. Consumed by grief, she has a difficult time readjusting to a world that has changed so dramatically for her. Not long after her father’s death, a strange window opens in the middle of the small lake behind her house. She climbs up an old oak to peer inside, but falls out of the tree and discovers that the window also serves as a door into a different world.

Enter Mordecai the Gand, a mysterious traveler who befriends Caroline and promises to help her find a way back home since the window she fell through has disappeared. The two set out on a series of adventures that include visiting a tree village populated by a tribe known for eating travelers, running into a witch under a spell of her own making, hiding in a cave with a dragon encased in a wall of ice (prone to melting by campfire), all the while being pursued by a mysterious entity call the Creach which promises to devour Caroline and trap her in an eternity of despair.

As they navigate these adventures and this new world, Caroline slowly discovers that she is meant to help each of the characters she meets. As she battles internally whether to stay or return home to the sadness and grief waiting for her there, she must regain perspective and open her heart to the act of caring and to the joy of love itself. In the end, she must demonstrate great courage, loyalty, and caring as the plot unfolds, becoming the active hero of her own story

Sherry’s Shelves – 3.13 – 3.19.22

Hi Everyone. Not a whole lot to talk about. The weeks and months are seeming to run together, though I am excited about working outside…in the pollen. LOL I did some work but remembered to wear my mask, so my allergies weren’t too bad. I did leave a wheelbarrow full of leaves and it is raining, so I’m sure that will be one soggy mess. Oh well, I least I got some cleanup done.

Did some reading and caught up on writing reviews for the books I have read. I am doing pretty good about keeping up with them. I have plenty sitting in my draft folder, ready to go. I was going to try and review everything I read, but I am having a hard time working them in.

How about you? What have you been up to? Any great books you want to share? Have you been traveling…yet? I was actually out a couple times this week. We went to the bank to have Mr Wonderful’s application for retirements notarized and went to the beach to see the Blue Angel’s come home from California. It was chilly that day, but so nice to be out and about. Right now, it’s raining, a steady downpour. It is spring in the south, so that is to be expected. We were lucky the last week. We had some steady rain, but not a huge accumulation, and lots of wind. Knocked the last of the leaves off the trees, so that is a good thing. lol

Stay safe and wear a mask..

I always dreamed of being a part of my favorite show, Parking Lot Potluck, but I never expected them to ask me to help solve a murder.

Someone poisoned a dish on the popular cooking competition. The host is dead and my favorite judge is in critical condition. The only one who witnessed the crime was Great Dane, Chloe.

Persephone and I are off to Seattle to solve the crime, but things are much different behind the scenes. Have the cast and crew been working on a recipe for deception, or was it a contestant with a case of sour grapes who’s brought production to a halt?

Whatever I do, I have to keep my inner fangirl in check, or my favorite show could get eliminated for good.

Flare
Jay Hogan
(Style Series, #1)
Publication date: April 21st 2022
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Romance

My own fashion label. The shiny new sign above the door means everything. My dream. My life. Worth every gruelling hour I’ve spent making it happen. Nothing can stop me now. Not the fear. Not the nightmares. Not my sad excuse for a love life. And certainly not Beckett Northcott, the sexy English professor who wouldn’t know a fitted shirt if it slapped him in the face and who has flannel down to an art form.

I don’t date for a very good reason, and yet Beck makes me want to break every damn one of my rules. But with my debut at Fashion Week looming, my business in trouble, and Beckett Northcott peeling open my terrified heart to a future I’ve never imagined, the threads of my carefully woven life are unravelling at the seams.

I could walk away. Or I could take a chance that Beck and I might just have what it takes to fashion a new life, together. A fresh design from a new cloth.

Review – Ten Years Gone by H P Newquist @HPNewquist

.

Ten Years Gone is my second book by H P Newquist and I have to admit, it has been lingering for far too long. It is not because I didn’t enjoy it, that’s for sure!

Ten Years Gone

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

In Kerrville, on the 21st of November, for nine years, someone is found murdered, hanging from a tree. One the tree is 1/10, 2/10, 3/10….It’s not like the police haven’t tried to solve the crimes, but there isn’t much to go on.

A reality show, looking for something interesting, decided they would come to Kerrville and find the killer before he/she can claim their tenth victim and vanish.

Then, Marcy gets wind of it. She is ex FBI with a chip on her shoulder. She has an investigation firm and pressures her ‘contacts’ to come up with a suspect…any suspect. She is a piece of work and as the story goes on, the worse she gets. She doesn’t instill any confidence in me. I would hate to be depending on her…for anything. If you read the book, you will understand why I want to reach into the Kindle and punch her lights out.

H P Newquist exposes the human frailty in Ten Years Gone. The state of mind of someone needing to right the wrong in his own way, no matter how twisted or monstrous the solution. IT doesn’t have a grotesque face, easily spotted. It can look like your neighbor, a friend, a coworker….hiding in plain sight.

Reality TV (cough, cough), a disgruntled FBI agent, a cop that never gives up, a town that struggles through ten years of terror..

There is suspense, but I wasn’t biting my nails. It was more mystery…ya know, IT’s gonna strike, ya know when, but not why, or who.

The ending…surprising…and I LOVE IT!

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Ten Years Gone by H P Newquist.

The new thriller from award-winning author HP Newquist!

Every November for nearly a decade, a body has been found hanging from a tree outside the town of Kerrville. As the tenth year approaches, the killer leaves clues that indicate there will only be one more murder. A reality show and its celebrity host decide that this last murder could be the ratings they’ve always wanted–and they are determined to find the murderer before the police do. But the killer thinks that is a very, very bad idea.

TEN YEARS GONE is currently available free in ebook format from Newquist’s site at: newquist.net

ABOUT H P NEWQUIST

H.P. Newquist

HP Newquist’s books and articles have been published all over the world, and his writing has been translated into languages from kanji to farsi.
All told, he has written more than two dozen books and hundreds of articles, along with numerous awards and citations.

His writing spans a vast array of interests and issues. In the late 1980s and 1990s he wrote extensively about artificial intelligence (AI), compiling a body of work that is arguably the most extensive coverage of the AI business created to date.

Newquist became an editorial columnist for Computerworld, and a contributor to Newsweek, Popular Mechanics, the Financial Technology Report, and Music Technology magazine. These led, perhaps not so naturally, to the Editor-In-Chief position at GUITAR magazine. He contributed to a host of other music magazines, including Billboard, Guitar Player, Guitar Shop, InTune, and Musician’s Planet.

Along the way, he wrote two documentary films–one of which was nominated for an Emmy Award–and created technology entries for Microsoft’s Encarta encyclopedia, while writing architecture and travel pieces for The New York Press.

Meanwhile, his work was cited and reviewed in the New York Times, the Economist, Variety, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, and hundreds of other publications around the world. He won some awards in the process.

Newquist’s books cover the same array of topics as his magazine articles, from brain science and space exploration to legendary guitarists and the strangeness of the Internet. To date, he has written over two dozen books. And he’s already committed to writing many more.

Giveaway – Some Days by J L Lora #CaffeinatedPR @jtothelove

Today I am exciting to share an excerpt and giveaway from Some Days, a standalone spicy romance in the Sometimes Love Happens Collection by J. L. Lora. Lora is the author of over twelve published novels, including two in Spanish. Her characters are real, flawed, and full of grit as they navigate life, love, and more.

Some Days

Amazon | B&N | Kobo | Apple

Dutiful daughter, my brother’s keeper, civil servant, and protector of my city—that’s me, Officer Dahlia Wicker. I’m a master at switching hats, until an ambush in the line of duty forces a new title on me—gunshot victim. I wake up in the emergency room, scared to death, and staring into the face of an angel with soft-yet-firm hands and a smile that makes my heart tremble.

Dr. Weston Ellison’s promise to look after my little brother eases my anxiety. His hands on my skin remind me I haven’t been touched by a man in a long time. After my recovery, I can’t stop running into him and I’m forced to admit how often I think about his lips and how badly I want them on me.

We are way too different.

Weston comes from generational wealth, and I’m Baltimore humble. Desire opens the door to our relationship, but feelings break in and take us hostage.

When my brother is unjustly arrested, a spotlight blares on our differences. Our bond falls victim to prejudice, privilege, and racism. Are we strong enough to withstand these age-old threats, or will they destroy us for good?

I’m still chuckling as I walk through the door of the 24-hour coffee bar.

That is until my gaze collides with the tall man with the broad shoulders and a smile so beautiful and perfect it should be on Colgate Optimum White ads. It takes away my breath and my good mood.

Doctor Hottie from the ER.

“Dahlia.”

Ugh. “Stop calling me that,” I practically growl at him.

“But it’s your name.”

I sigh. “Call me Officer Wicker, Dr. Ellison.”

He nods, but his eyes still hold that teasing sparkle. “Dr. Ellis. I shortened it so it doesn’t sound so… pretentious. I hope you like that better.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s illegal.”

“Not when I file papers in court.”

“Why would you do that?” Nothing about this guy makes sense to me. “Never mind, I don’t care. Why are you here? Didn’t you hear this place got robbed around this time a couple of nights ago?”

He nods, toying with the apple in his hand. “I did hear that. But with you here, I know we are all safe.”

Jesus. I can only shake my head. Why does he insist on flirting with me?

The better question is how do you resist? That mouth…those lips are nothing if not crafted by God’s own hands.

“How’s your shoulder?” he asks.

It flexes like it’s responding to his voice.

“Fine,” I say.

“Have you done a follow-up?” He takes a step closer, and I take one back.

I do a full round flex for him. “It’s all healed and better than ever. I finished my physical therapy, and they declared it’s perfect.”

So, get off my damned back.

But his eyes are all over my body. All over the uniform that’s supposed to make me look like the epitome of authority, but under his gaze feels like a Cat Woman costume. But he doesn’t linger like the pervs do. No, this fucking weirdo stares back into my eyes and smiles, exposing those perfect TV doctor pearly whites. They’re probably veneers.

That’s why he smiles so much. He’s getting his money’s worth. And why is my body tingling like someone jabbed me with live wire.

“I have to go. I have the four a.m. shift,” he says, turning around and putting a twenty on the counter.

Thank God, he’s leaving. He’s nice and he saved my life, but I don’t want any more reminders of that night. It’s enough that it’s stayed with me, always popping up at the oddest moments in the day and making me wake up in cold sweats sometimes. I need to forget that night and this damned doctor. Even if he has those nice arms and that narrow waist and nice ass that doesn’t belong on a man with that face. Or a doctor.

He grabs his coffee and turns around again, his gaze pinning me on the spot. “It was great to see you again, Dahlia.”

I’m frozen for a second, not knowing what to say, fighting the warm wave settling in my belly.

“You too, doc,” I blurt out.

WTF.

I don’t know why I say it and hate myself because his smile shines brighter and deeper. And I get warmer lower in my body.

“You look really beautiful, as always.” He walks away, leaving me to stare after him with my insides roiling in a way I really don’t like.

Maybe he triggers memories of the night I got shot.  It’s probably a panic attack manifesting.
