Alyssa Day writes some fantastic stories. After reading the first book in the series (see my review link below), Atlantis Rising, I had to have more…so here’s Atlantis Awakening.

MY REVIEW

Poseiden’s finest against vampires…I’d like to see that, but I’ll settle for reading about it.

Ven is second in line to the throne, but he doesn’t want it. He is happy being head of the Warrior Academy.

Erin Connor is a witch and knew she was in trouble when she came face to face with Ven. I think we all know where this is going, but I am looking forward to a slip sliding ride to Atlantis.

Ven quickly knew he would stop at nothing to protect her from those who pursue her.

The romance is otherwordly instalove, easy for me to accept in a novel where it is to be expected…which I will leave to you to find out why.

Atlantean, Elven, Vampires, Shapshifters, Witches…you never know who your friends are.

The world and characters are familiar, at least some of them, and I love learning more about them. Danger is always near and that creates suspense and curiosity for me.

Though the storyline is familiar and easy to figure out, I do like surprised lovers, magical love and battles between good and evil.

The romance is steamy and for adults only.

Even though Atlantis Awakening tells Ven and Erin’s story, it leaves us in a pickle with the overall storyline. I recommend reading in order to get the full impact.

If you are left, all you know gone, do you blow your brains out? Become a guerilla fighter? Take it and become one of the herd? I love watching the characters step up and reach their full potential.

I love the route Dina Rae took with the conspiracy. I am a bit of a buff myself, and have some similar thoughts about some current events, or a possible future, without the supernatural angle, which I totally love.

Early on in the Hard-heads case, at one of the bar association luncheons, Judge Pirandello had positioned himself next to one of his former clerks who was now a successful litigator in the Probate Court. Biggers, by name. There was the introductory chat about the wellbeing of their family members and the joke about the latest case here or there. The dialogue was familiar to both of them. The Hard-heads plaintiff was a problem person, the judge had learned, and he needed to be squashed to put an end to mostly frivolous claims, driven by greed. Everybody in the family knew it, the judge heard. He knew the type. The Probate Court was littered with greedy relatives, angry children with buxom young stepmothers wearing expensive jewelry their fathers had bought. He knew it all. The judge wanted rid of this case, and so he was pleased to learn that it was not worthy of His Honor’s dignified much less close attention. The Hard-heads case had to go.

It would have gone long before now, the judge was thinking to himself as he growled into the cup of black tea, but these damned people had refused to take the hint, refused to be cowed or put in their places. Here and there at the few hearings he had conducted over this motion or that, he had seen a shrug of the shoulders by one or another lawyer.

“What could we do?” They might as well have said that out loud. The judge understood.

His knee was throbbing, but Judge Pirandello refused to have it replaced. The fact that cold weather was coming on made it worse. The goddamned orthopedic surgeon was another money-grubber. Were there no professionals left in his world who were not money-grubbers? He stretched his corpulence forward over the edge of his chair to reach for his footstool, then winced as he elevated the bad leg. He yelled out for Mary to bring him another cup of tea. Then, he opened the enormous file on the small table beside his chair.

In Re the Estate of Seri. He hated even the name. Italian people should not behave in this fashion, he thought. His own father would have come back from the dead to beat the daylights out of his heirs if they had behaved as these people were behaving. Suing one another. Claiming fraud. All of it. Disgraceful, he thought. They were each poised to receive a generous amount of money but no, that wasn’t good enough. As with errant children, the Judge was both angry with and ashamed of the parties.

Cool that Aurora lives in a junkyard. I love it. Inventing gadgets and widgets that improve the humans lives around her, risking everything, including her life. It’s a good thing she has lots of friends and some of them in high places.

“Enchantress with a repair shop”

She violates the Law of Natural Physique.

She had helped Lily. This young girl captured my heart.

She is the Enchantress and he is the Destroyer. She is forced to work with him to save their kingdom. To her life is sunshine and lollipops, though her life has not been an easy one.

I was caught up in the enchanting world of love and magic, loyalty and sacrifice, and all the bad that those who resent what other have entails. The romance was realistic, with doubts and emotions that pushed and pulled the characters.

Hate, betrayal and revenge.

I never missed not having read the first book in the series. I believe there is another book, but if I quit here, I am completely satisfied with reading this as a stand alone.

I wonder the same thing as Jared, wondering about our motivation for our interactions with other countries…is it all about what they have that benefits us? Crocker felt it best not to question it so he could do his job as leader of Black Cell.

Seal Team Six has all I expected from a Seal and his ‘friends.’ Action packed. Suspenseful. Makes me ponder the sacrifices and danger real soldiers face so we are free.

LATEST HAPPENINGS

Hello everyone. Glad to see you stopping in. As I write this, it is raining. It has been super sunny and 90 degrees, so I am happy to see it. The grass was getting so dry it started to crunch under my feet. I haven’t had to worry about watering, until last week. Even the first day of watering, the rain paid a quick visit. Isn’t that how it goes? But, it’s all good. Maybe this will wash out some of the pollen that seems to be playing havoc with my allergies. I haven’t been able to work in the yard without the help of Mr Wonderful, so it is in definite need of clean up. I am going to hire someone to come by and whip the yard in shape, maybe do a couple of projects. I am also going to, for the first time ever, have someone come by and do some house cleaning. Mr Wonderful does a good job, but I don’t think it’s fair, with him working a full time job and two freelance jobs, to have to do so much. It won’t cost that much and it will be a relief to have it done. I have caught up on most of my reviews for the books I have read. Just have two left right now. I have been reading books on my kindle that are documents, trying to clean them off. Some are pretty old and I think there will be some DNFs, just because I have so many books I want to read I will never have time to read them all. I need to be immortal to do everything I want to do. LOL Have a super week!

Addi

“You’re in over your head and you know it.” Leigh lifts her frozen margarita to her lips and eyes me over the sugar rim.

“I am not.” I roll my eyes and look around the smoky bar. I don’t know why I even let Leigh talk me into coming here. It’s dark, a little sketchy, and the millions of fog machines fill the place with smoke so thick you’d think they allowed cigarettes in here.

“You’re in denial, Addi. You can’t even look at me.”

I snap my eyes back to her. “It’s hard to see with all this smoke.” I wave my hand around for dramatic effect. I’m so in denial but she doesn’t need to know that.

Leigh laughs and rolls her eyes. “Yeah okay girl, whatever you say.”

“The drinks are delicious though.” I raise my glass before bringing to my lips to it, licking the sugar rim.

It’s as if a storm is brewing, ready to take over at any minute, inside my belly. Awake at night, I stare at the ceiling as it flips and twists, growing worse.

The storm named Cole.

He fills my bloodstream, running through my veins, and follows me everywhere I go. No matter what I do, I can’t stop it.

I was a fool thinking I could and I’m a fool now as I sit here and let it happen.

I’m falling hopelessly in love with Cole.

It’s unreal, consuming, and lighting me on fire from within.

I’ve never felt anything like it before. The more I see him, the more I want. And Leigh is absolutely correct.

I’m in over my fucking head.

How do you choose a book cover and what importance do you place upon a book cover?

I place HUGE importance on a book cover and here’s why:

I only get one chance to make a first impression. Fair or not, we are a visual people who make all sorts of judgements based on looks. In the realm of personal interactions this can be very unfair. In the realm of professional work, it can still be unfair but fighting the reality would not be a good use of my time. The fact is that potential readers will make a judgement call about the quality of my work based on the cover of my book. I only get their attention for a few seconds and I want to entice them to stick around.
My covers need to reflect my brand. I strive for consistency across all platforms. I want to create a seamless experience for readers who look further into me and my work. I want them to explore freely without any jarring moments of, “oh that doesn’t fit.” I know that my books and I are not for everyone but if we are for you, I want you to stay and get comfy in my little corner of the romance world!

How I choose a book cover:

I use my gut. I decided to skip past any trend research. I picked something that I liked and reflected a larger sense of me. I want to sustain this career and I know that if I choose according to trend or market, that will wear me out in the long run. I would have a hard time staying excited about what other people like.
I want to be inspired. I sought custom cover design for That Guy and That Girl while still early in the revision process. I found my choice to be incredibly inspiring! I was inspired to make the best book I could so it would match up to a great cover!
I value the services of a professional. I love my writer’s lane and I respect the graphic designers’ lane. I like to think that I have a great sense of what I like but making it come to life visually is not a skill that I currently have. Fortunately, I had some savings that I set aside to hire a professional. I was so grateful for the work of Robin Vuchnich of mycustombookcover.com

EXCERPT

I spot Marcus in my dad’s hand-me-down Maxima with John in the front seat next to him. Oh jeez. John Hunter. He’s that guy. He’s the stuff of young girls’ dreams and I gave him up long ago by trying to turn my eyes to other guys. The way I see it, it’s like this: 1) he’s Marcus’s best friend and I have no interest in messing up their friendship; 2) he’s not an intentional player but he’s a player just the same; and 3) thank you, but I’ll skip the broken heart, please. I’ve grown up in proximity to this handsome devil for most of my life and he still manages to make my stomach drop when I see him.

It’s such a cliché to say that he’s tall, dark and handsome but clichés work for a reason—they’re inescapable kernels of truth. John is tall at a striking six feet and four inches. He’s dark with his almost-black hair and deep brown eyes. I can’t forget the handsome with his perfectly structured jaw line. Ridiculous. Just by looking at him, I can feel my adrenaline kicking in and the sweat gathering. Great.

I plaster an annoyed look on my face because that’s how we interact with each other. That’s part of our unwritten script. He plays the charming rogue and I play the cynical wallflower who is suspicious of all his kind gestures. He jumps out and does a half-bow. “Madame, your chariot,” he says as he gestures to the front seat.

Natalia is a lifelong reader and lover of romance novels. Before finally tapping away at her keyboard to create her own stories, she tried all sorts of professions: elementary school teacher, barista, seller of make-up, baker, and the list goes on. When she isn’t pursuing the arts, she’s hanging out with her husband, two wacky children, and full-figured Corgi.

About the Author

Mystery writing lets Peg indulge her curiosity under the guise of “work” (aka research). As a kid, she read the entire set of children’s encyclopedias her parents gave her and has been known to read the dictionary. She put pen to paper at age seven when she wrote plays and forced her cousins to perform them at Christmas dinner. She switched to mysteries when she discovered the perfect hiding place for a body down the street from her house.

When she’s not writing, she spends her time reading, cooking, spoiling her granddaughter and checking her books’ stats on Amazon.
