Review – Protecting Hawk by Jane Blythe @jblytheauthor

Protecting Hawk by Jane Blythe is Book V of the Prey, but the series is part of something so much bigger. There are many more books and authors putting their own spin on the Operation Alpha World.

About Operation Alpha

Operation Alpha is the fan fiction world for Susan Stoker’s SEAL of Protection, Delta Force Heroes, and Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Worlds. The books all have at least one of Susan’s characters in them. Check it out at Aces Press.

MY REVIEW

I have been reading Jane Blythe’s work for a long time now and her writing style fits me well. Protecting Hawk is Book V in her Special Forces: Operation Alpha – Prey Security series. I am familiar with many of the characters from previous books and am eager to see what she puts them through in Protecting Hawk.

The guys are hunks and the women are damsels in distress, sorta. But, be careful. You push them into a corner and they can bite.

A one night stand and they are unable to forget? I can sure see why she can’t. LOL I guess if you are a guy back from a military mission, one who only does one night stands because he does not want a relationship, maybe…if he met the right one…she could be unforgettable. Is there such a thing as love at first sight?

Madeline Montgomery works as a victimologist, studying the relationship between victims and their attackers, working with police across the country.

She is on the run, because her work brought her to the attention of a serial killer, but it goes so much deeper than that. I am not going to tell you why, but it does tie into an issue that Prey Security has been dealing with.

She walks in. Eight months pregnant. Seeking help. Her life and her unborn baby’s life is on the line. She knows they are the best, so here she is.

The premise is a familiar one with romantic suspense. It’s hard to get around the push/pull, (mis or no) communication and keep the story going. After all, that is usually how it leaves her open to danger. And, real life, look how well we all communicate. LOL

After meeting Madeline, Hawk has started to reconsider his military career. Maybe it’s time to retire and accept a job at Prey Security. His family had been after him to join the firm and now he has a reason to consider it…if he goes after her. With all the skills his family possesses it would not be difficult to find her, he just has to make up his mind to do it. Before he has the chance…

It’s hard for me to imagine a scenario I don’t see coming, but Jane Blythe does manage to surprise me, when Ellen walked into the room….

Thank you, Jane, for the hours of unputdownable entertainment. Keep it coming.

GOODREADS BLURB

It was only supposed to be one night.

When Madeline Montgomery finds out she’s carrying her one night stand’s baby she’s shocked, but without his name she can’t find him, and determines to raise her child alone. With a stalker upping his ante and the cops refusing to take her seriously, she runs to Prey Security for help. Stunned to find her baby’s father is a co-owner of the company, the two grow close, bonding over their son’s birth. However a threat is hovering over them, one their fledgling relationship might not survive.

Hawk Oswald doesn’t believe relationships last, yet he can’t stop obsessing over the one night stand from eight months ago. When the woman in question shows up as a client at Prey, pregnant with his child, he realizes maybe he does want a family of his own. But someone is out to get him and his siblings, and when evidence suggests Maddy might be a part of it, he’s going to have to decide whether or not he believes in the woman he’s falling in love with before its too late.

Review – Protecting Eagle by Jane Blythe @jblytheauthor

Operation Alpha

Jane Blythe is a must read author for me, as you will see at the end of the post. I am excited to begin a new series, called Prey Security. Protecting Eagle is part of the Operation Alpha Fan Fiction for Susan Stoker’s SEAL of Protection, Delta Force Heroes, and Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Worlds. They all have at least one of Susan’s characters in them.

MY REVIEW

I am always excited to be back in one of Jane Blythe’s world.

Oswald didn’t want to do it, but he walked her to the cell and left her there. She had worked for them to get information on the family and passed it on to someone. Prey security is at risk. He’s torn because his gut tells him she’s not a bad person and there is more going on than meets the eye.

Eagle Oswald fights his attraction to Olivia. He has to know who she gave the information to so he can protect his family and his business. They are pretty much one and the same. Was it a favor for a friend? Was someone using her? Why? Why? Why? His gut told him something wasn’t right about the situation.

Kaden Ibrahim is a terrorist leader in Syria. His goals were many: money, power and control. He uses fear to get it. Right now, he wants information.

Jane Blythe’s characters are damaged in some way, whether through past or present trauma and losses.

Olivia’s mantra: Suck it up, Buttercup.

I enjoyed the story, but it didn’t quite work for me, The mystery kept me reading, I had to know the what and why. I would classify this as a romantic cozy mystery. Is there such a thing? If someone is looking for a light mystery to keep them busy, this would work. Definitely won’t stop me from grabbing the next book.

GOODREADS BLURB

First impressions can be hard to overcome.

Olivia Wakefield took the job at the prestigious and world renowned Prey Security under false pretenses. She always knew there was a chance she could be found out. What she didn’t expect was for her sexy boss to put her in prison, or to find herself directly in the crosshairs of a dangerous terrorist. Now she’ll have to rely on said boss to keep her alive, problem is she doesn’t trust him.

Eagle Oswald takes his responsibilities seriously. There isn’t anything he wouldn’t do to protect his family and his company, including locking up the woman he hasn’t been able to get out of his head since she came to work for him six months ago, even though his gut tells him there’s more going on than meets the eye. When Olivia is threatened he will stop at nothing to protect her. Keeping her safe should be easy, earning her trust and winning her heart won’t be.

Giveaway & Review – Arid Sea by Norm Harris #NormHarris @GoddessFish

Arid Sea (A Spider Green Mystery Thriller Series #2) by Norm Harris

GENRE: Mystery/Thriller  (Legal Military)

MY REVIEW

I had my eye on the Spider Green mystery series since I saw the first book, Fruit Of The Poisonous Tree, but I didn’t jump on it until now, with Arid Sea. Right out of the gate, my heart went out to Kristi Larsson and other like her, victims of trafficking.

Then, we find Faydra “Spider” Green at the Naval Station in Pensacola, Florida. I am very familiar with the area and love books that take place in locations I know. She works for NCIS, oh yeah, as a Terminator. They always get their man or woman. Her dad is also a former President of the United States. So much deliciousness, I am eager to devour it.

We have two cases in motion. One, a murder mystery and Virgil is on the case. The other, Spider is out to bust the Galaxy Friendship Association for the theft of millions of dollars of defense money.

I don’t think Faydra is prepared for Justine. I fear what is to come. He is a PIG…In her words ‘a perverted douchebag’, but I feel he is so much worse than that. Depraved and Dangerous.

And now…it gets suspenseful, and it went a road I didn’t see coming. That is what happens when I become complacent and the author feels they have to wake me up. lol

Arid Sea by Norm Harris started out interesting: a murder, a gator, a shark….and it picks up with suspense and pacing after Justine becomes involved, but that is part of the problem. The pace went too fast, leaving out details I would love to have seen fleshed out more. I felt I was missing stuff….I bounced between a 3 and 4 rating, and when I do that, I average up.

BLURB

Faydra “Spider” Green is a spirited Navy lawyer who wants nothing more than to do the right thing and see justice done. After reconciling with her father, former President William Green, Fay is asked to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Alvin Joe, a retired admiral. He has vanished – seemingly into thin air – from his Florida home, along with secret files for a top-secret military weapon. Alongside her bubbly, quick-witted sister and a handsome, affable Sheriff, Fay sets out to track down Joe. But she soon finds herself embroiled in a deeper and far more sinister plot involving an unscrupulous corporation, the mafia, and a truly evil man who has his sights set on destroying her.

EXCERPT

In five minutes, her sister would be gator chow. She looked back to the spot where she had last seen Pearce. Her sister was swimming for all she was worth, with the gator hot on her heels. Pearce was a good swimmer. As Fay watched her sister make a valiant attempt to stay ahead of the gator, she recalled an observation Charles Darwin, the evolutionist, had once made: “He who hesitates is… lunch.” Fay grabbed the remaining speargun and prepared to swim to her sister’s aid. Just as she was about to leap from the boat, she spotted a shark. A giant bull shark hovered about three feet back and about five feet below the boat’s stern. Pearce was heading directly away from the gator’s jaws into those of the waiting bull shark. Were these two creatures working this area together? The gator herded Pearce toward Jaws Junior, and fish and reptile would split the profits? Out of the frying pan and into the fire, as they said – or in this case, out of the fire and into the inferno. Fay needed to think fast. She pointed the speargun at the shark. After shoving the gun into the water, she fired. She must have hit the fish, as the speargun ripped from her hands and disappeared into the water. This was not a good move on her part. Now there was an angry alligator, a wounded bull shark, and a blood trail in the water.

AUTHOR Bio and Links

Norm Harris’ first novel debuted on an Amazon bestseller list in 2002. It was a one-and-done, but now he’s back with a plan to publish a couple of sequels to that first mystery/thriller of days gone by. Except for time spent in military service, he is a second-generation Seattleite (that’s what they call those who dwell in the shadow of Mt. Rainier), with his legal beagle son, K-K, and five giant tropical fish. His upcoming release, Arid Sea, is the third book in what he hopes to be an award-winning Spider Green Mystery Story series.
