The Dead Certain Doubt: An Ed Earl Burch Novel

by Jim Nesbitt

March 13 – April 7, 2023 Virtual Book Tour

Synopsis:

Revenge, Guilt, Redemption & Gunsmoke

When Doubt Is Your Only Friend

Ed Earl Burch, a cashiered Dallas murder cop, is a private detective facing the relentless onslaught of age, bad choices, guilt and regret. Smart, tough, profane and reckless, he’s a survivor who relies on his own guts and savvy and expects no help or salvation from anybody.

But he’s also a man who longs for the sense of higher calling he felt when he carried a homicide detective’s gold shield. He seeks redemption and a chance to make amends to a dying old woman he abandoned decades ago when she needed him most.

When he sees her again, she has the same request — save her granddaughter from the vicious outlaws on her trail and bring her home for a final goodbye. Easier said than done because the granddaughter is a hardened hustler and gunrunner, hellbent on avenging a lover who got chopped up and stuffed into a barbecue smoker by cartel gunsels and a rival smuggler.

To fulfill the old woman’s last request, Burch heads back to the borderlands of West Texas on a mercy mission that plunges him into a violent world of smugglers, cartel killers, crooked lawmen, Bible-thumping hucksters, anti-government extremists and an old nemesis who wants to see him dead.

The odds are long and Burch has his doubts — about himself, the granddaughter, old friends and the elusive nature of grace from guilt. Truth be told, doubt is the only thing he’s dead certain of.

Seven

Watch your six, Sport Model.

A dead partner’s whispered warning. A triggered twitch of muscle memory and street cop reflexes. The split-second dive to the right. The graceless tuck and shoulder roll that slams and skids your ass across the greasy linoleum floor of a roadside tienda.

Left hand full of a Colt’s cold comfort. Hammer back. Eight Fat Boys in the mag. One in the pipe. Hardball .45 ACP and Flying Ashtrays. Find the source of that buckshot blast meant to blow your head into red mist, skull fragments, hair and brain matter.

Ignore the screams, shouts, clumping footfalls and Dios Mios of customers and clerks exiting rapido to safety. Smell the cordite but pay it no mind.

Ignore all that shattered bottle glass and the ketchup, mustard, mayo, salsa picante and salsa verde splattered across the floor, your jeans, your belt buckle and your best Nocona boots. A swirling mess of red, green, white and yellow that just doesn’t matter.

Find that shooter. Listen for the telltale shing-shing pumping more buckshot into the chamber. Pray he’s old school. Pray the shotgun isn’t a semi-automatic with the next round already in the pipe.

Shing-shing.

Answered prayer. The sound rises from the next aisle to his front left. The Colt tracks the echo, sights panning across the shelves facing him. Jarritos, Jumex, Sidral Mundet, Big Red, 7 Up. Spam, Underwood Deviled Ham, Starkist. Valvoline, Havoline, Pennzoil.<

A boot sole scrapes the linoleum. Front corner of the next aisle. Right behind the 10W30. Colt centers on the sound. Front blade splits a quart of Havoline. Blast five shots. A grunt, a groan and the clatter of dropped gun metal. Ears ring.

Quick crab crawl to the opposite corner.

Sneak a peek. Shooter on his knees. One hand covers his bloody gut. The other reaches for his pump shotgun.

Fuck you, old school. Three more blasts from the Colt. Squeeze the trigger like a lover until the slide locks back and smoke curls from the breech. One round cores a Third Eye in the shooter’s forehead.

Quema tu culo en el infierno, pendejo. No last rites. No absolution. Straight to the flames. Spit a sour green ball of phlegm on the floor.

Shuck the empty mag. Slap home a fresh one. Trip the slide. Shake out a Lucky and stick it on a dry lip.

Light the nail with a Zippo and a shaky hand. Drag the smoke down deep to smother the stench of gunsmoke and blood. Dial 911 on the black rotary phone next to the cash register and wait for the gaudy post-mortem show to start. No popcorn.

Give thanks to the whiskey gods you survived another gunfight. Thank those old reflexes, too. They’re the second cousins of doubt — the only thing you’re dead certain of.

*** *** *** ***

Dealer’s choice. Jacks or better to open. Check, raise, bluff or call in a round of liar’s poker with a lawdog Burch knew but hadn’t seen in almost a decade. Didn’t know if he could trust the man who held all the high cards. And the badge. Best to play it close to the vest.

“I see you still worship at the Church of John Browning. Bet you still follow the lessons they taught you at the Hollow-Point Charm School.”

Raise with a bluff and smartass bluster.

“Dance with who brung ya, Sheriff. And not much charm to this deal. Just a shitload of lead. Muchacho there tried to make me a headless horseman with some double-ought. I begged to differ and let Brother John’s best do my talking for me.”

“Old gun.” Call.

“Old man shootin’ it. Only gun I can hit anything with.” Re-raise.

“And you had to come all the way out to my county to prove you still could. Why the hell is that?”

Burch smiled but didn’t answer. A quiet fold. The sheriff was deeply annoyed but wasn’t ready to throw him in a jail cell. Yet.

Burch stood about five feet away from the shooter’s corpse, dripping ketchup, mustard and salsa on the tienda linoleum. Half-assed trying not to fuck up the sheriff’s crime scene while smoking another Lucky pacifier.

His eyes scanned the body, sprawled face first in a dark, spreading pool, left arm flexed out like it was plowing a path for a body that would never follow.

His brain automatically picked out and filed the details. Once a murder cop, always a murder cop. Gold badge or not.

Detail: The last hollow-point he fired blew out the back of the man’s skull. Filed.

Detail: A scorpion tattoo on the left forearm. Black ink only. Lines still sharp. Filed.

Detail: Shooter’s gun a Remington 870 pump. Twelve gauge with a sawed-off barrel. Common as rocks and sand in West Texas. Filed.

He studied the left side of the man’s face, the side that wasn’t marinating in blood and brain pulp.

Detail: Smooth bronze skin, left eye showing the eight-ball bulge. Detail: Lips locked back over a pearly white grimace. Silver cuff on the left earlobe. Maricón? Maybe.

Details and question filed. Nothing rose from his memory banks. Noted and filed.

His eyes returned to the gaping hole in the back of the man’s skull.

Gotta love them Flying Ashtrays. Did damage to a man. Hardball knocked him down and hollow-point chewed up his innards and cored out his skull. The Big Adios. One-way ticket. Paid in full.

The sheriff squatted on his boot heels near the dead man’s right hip, using the eraser end of a pencil to lift the bloody tail of a denim shirt to study an exit wound. A muttered oath. English or Spanish. Burch couldn’t tell.

More muttering. A wallet fished out of a back pocket with a hand gloved in latex. A glance at the driver’s license. A quick riffle through a thick sheaf of greenbacks.

Detail: Helluva lot of lettuce in that wallet. More than your average greaseball carries. Noted and filed.

Sheriff Sudden Doggett gave one shake of the head then pinned Burch with dark, angry eyes framed by the underside of a faded, stained and dented Resistol that might have been dark gray in its younger days.

“Why the fuck is it every time you cross the Cuervo County line you have to announce your presence by painting the walls red?”

“Only the second time I’ve visited your fair jurisdiction, Sheriff. And the first time was a few years back. Seven or was it eight?”

“Not long enough if you ask me. Why can’t you be like every other tourist passing through and keep trucking over the river for some bad tequila and cheap pussy?”

“Because I’m on a job. Was on my way to see you when this happened.”

“Well, fuck me runnin’. Worst news I’ve had all day. Fuckin’ angel of death is what you are. And my morgue’s already full. Last thing I need is another gun hand racking up body count.”

“Startin’ to sound like your old boss.”

“You can just take that talk and jam it straight up your ass, pendejo. Go clean yourself up some. You look like Ronald McDonald with that shit smeared all over you.”

“Good to see you again, too, Sheriff.”

“Bite my ass, Burch.”

Risky to poke a stick at Doggett with the thin hand he held. Might wind up in a jail cell for his trouble. But the reaction he got was worth it – genuine pissoff with no hesitation or trace of guilt. Told him he just might be dealing with a straight shooter. Hope so. We’ll see.

The lawman kept his eyes locked on Burch as he barked an order.

“Get this fuckhead out of my face before I run him in lookin’ just like the clown he is. Take him out back. Ruby’s got a garden hose out there. Let him use it and get cleaned up while I check out this mess. Leave his Colt on the counter.”

A blade-faced deputy with acne scars and the flattened nose of a bad boxer stepped up and grabbed him by the elbow. Burch shook his arm free, gave him a glare and walked toward the back door of the store.

Anger flushed out the shakes. He felt better, but not great. As good as it gets after killing a man.

Review – Altered by Rob Kaufman pumpupyourbook #multiplepersonalities

MY REVIEW

Four ‘for the price’ of one.

I like the cool cover for Altered by Rob Kaufman, and when I read the blurb, I had to have it. I mean, a guy with four personalities, or alters, who, when threatened will defend themselves…or at least one of them will step up.

Justin Wright, a clinical psychiatrist, has no clue how Frank Devlin, a man with multiple identities, alters, will change his life. Frank had a dad who didn’t care about him and was now dead, a drunken mother who gave him to his uncle…for a few months…who, when he entered his room, Frank would go to his safe place. I figured he had to have an awful childhood if he has multiple identities. He has to have some way to escape the horror. The only good thing was a window, where he could look out on the street and watch the kids and dogs play.

As Justin and Mary share their mystery, her words bring tears to my eyes, a very well written scene. The guilt people carry for the death of a loved one is not always rational, unless they pointed a gun at the person and killed them.

A mystery solved. Love and loss shared. Happiness and anguish shared.

I love psychological thrillers, delving into a damaged mind. Whenever I deal with a mystery, a thriller, I am many times more in love with the villain than the victim. I don’t care so much about how they did what they did, but I want to dig into the whys of their actions. All too often that is never known, so let’s see how Rob Kaufman deals with Frank Devlin’s actions…and the other three identities. I will be sticking around for Book II.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Altered by Rob Kaufman.

About the Book:

Title: Altered (Justin Wright Suspense Series – Book 1)

Author: Rob Kaufman

Publisher: Independent

Pages: 276

Genre: Psychological Suspense Thriller

When Frank Devlin walks into Justin Wright’s office, the renowned New York City clinical psychiatrist decides to take on one of the most challenging cases of his career.

After their first session, it’s obvious Frank has multiple personalities (“alters”) and each one couldn’t be more different than the other. Justin must get to know each individual alter in order to discover the best route to take so that Frank can live a full and happy life. He must also delve into Frank’s past, one filled with mystery, darkness and trauma — the true causes behind his personality split.

As Justin deals with Frank’s issues, he’s also confronted with his own demons: the kidnapping of Michael, his youngest son, seven years earlier… a wife he adores, Mandy, who refuses to accept her son is gone… a constant struggle with his oldest son, Dylan, who was watching over Michael the day the boy was taken. And his problems get worse as, unbeknownst to Justin, Frank and his alters are secretly weaving themselves into his life in ways that will affect the Wright family forever.

A suspense-filled story driven by emotion, angst and the ultimate revenge, “Altered” brings readers down a twisted path of uncertainty and mind games — leaving them shocked, heartbroken and questioning what could possibly come next…

Book Excerpt:

The frigid breeze whipped across his face. He ran up the city blocks, wiping melted snowflakes from his eyelids so he could see where he was going. By the time he reached 49th Street, he was out of breath and had to stop. He leaned against the steel pole that held both the street signs and traffic lights. After a few deep breaths, he wiped the liquified flurries off his cheeks and walked as quickly as he could until he reached 50th.

He made a right off Park and because the office was so close to the corner, he could see a glow of light coming from the window. Breathing a sigh of relief, he went through the building’s glass front door and made a quick left. He didn’t stop long enough to ring the bell to let anyone know he was about to enter. Trying to catch his breath, he opened the office door.

The first thing he saw was a man holding a gun up to his own temple.

He yelled, and before he could say a coherent word, he watched the man turn toward him and heard a loud bang. And then another.

His legs wobbled, then his head banged on the wooden floor. He brought his hand up to his throat and felt warm liquid oozing from a hole in his neck. He was surprised at the lack of pain and how rapidly numbness was spreading throughout his body. His throat felt like it was swelling up, closing his airway. He fought out a gasp and heard a soft gurgle. Did he just make that noise? Was blood filling his throat?

He tried to take another breath and heard the same sloshing liquid. His mind went void of thought, his body, frozen.

Suddenly there was muffled yelling, unintelligible screams. Something that felt like a hand cupped the back of his head and soft skin brushed his cheek. As time passed, seconds… minutes… hours… he couldn’t be sure, everything faded except a weightlessness enshrouding him, a gentle sense of calm. He closed his eyes and listened to the blood pump, with each heartbeat, through the opening in his neck.

From some obscure corner of his mind, reality edged its way back in and he struggled to open his eyes one last time.

Through the haze of his dissolving vision, he saw a familiar face hovering over him. Anguish twisted it, and as if from a long distance away, he heard the cries and moans falling from the man’s mouth.

He wanted to cry, grieve for them both, but once again his heavy eyelids fell down. The weeping and mumbling became a fading hum and then ultimately silence.

His final thought was not about this man who sobbed above him, his killer or the “why” behind what just happened. It was the hope that he’d see the loved one he’d lost — a hope that made him smile inside as a comforting warmth enveloped his body like the most snug of blankets warmed by the sun itself.

About the Author

Rob Kaufman novels are known for having characters with whom people can relate, while at the same time, bringing them on a journey from which most people would crumble.

His degree in Psychology was the first step toward getting beneath the surface of the people in his life. What followed was a lifelong search for what makes people tick – what forces them to become evil when deep down they are yearning for love. Rob’s characters walk this search with him, deep into the human psyche, creating psychological thrillers from everyday events.

Rob’s books are perfect for those who enjoy thrillers but also need strong emotion to keep them deeply involved with the characters.

“All my books hit home for me,” says Rob. “There are always parts that make me laugh out loud as I write them… and many, too many, that make me cry. And the great thing is, I’m finding that many readers of my books experience the same emotions.”

Rob’s books receive both national and international praise with most reviews noting that his storylines are extremely “unique” and “sobering” and the twists and turns are “masterful”.

Giveaway – Vindictive by Ryan Lawrence @RyanLAuthor @GoddessFish

I love learning about the author’s inspiration for a cover, the characters and even the setting of the novel. So let’s give a hearty welcome to Ryan Lawrence.

Crafting the Canadian Landscape of Vindictive

It is often said to write what you know. Sometimes, there is a strong desire to write about where you know, too—so to speak.

            From the beginning, before laying a finger on my keyboard, I knew my novel, Vindictive, would take place in Canada. While I planned to set scenes in several well-known Canadian locales, my primary objective was to create a totally original city to position the bulk of the story within.

            The desire was present, the innovative passion robust, but truthfully, the idea to create this city did not burst from my noggin like Athena from Zeus’s head, dynamic and unexpected. Instead, it was inspired by Mark Frost and David Lynch’s quirky, totally original town of Twin Peaks. The notion that I could craft a place wholly from my imagination and fill it with sexy, crazy, and dramatic—okay, melodramatic characters greatly appealed to me.

            Growing up in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, I read many books set in non-Canadian cities. From Charles Dickens’s London to James Baldwin’s Paris to Anne Rice’s New Orleans to countless books set in New York. I rarely got taken to a Canadian landscape. If I did, these novels usually took place in rural prairies, small-town Northern Ontario or the bucolic countryside and fishing villages of Maritime provinces.

            While these stories were entertaining, their settings authentic to many Canadian voices and experiences, I wanted something to reflect a landscape nearer to my personal urban upbringing. I yearned to read stories where a location I was more familiar with was brought to the forefront. I had little in common with the depression-era backdrop of Hugh Garner’s Toronto-set Cabbagetown—a high-school reading requirement.

            In University, I complained to anyone who would listen, professors and fellow students alike, that I was desperate to read something modern set in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Something with nary a cliff or prairie thistle to be found.

            Thanks to suggestions from amazing people, I discovered Tanya Huff and Brad Fraser. These are two Canadian writers who set their work in Toronto, Ontario and Edmonton, Alberta, respectively. The contemporary, urban feel of these novels blew my mind. The use of modern locales, familiar cultural settings, and trendy establishments in Huff’s Blood Books series and in Fraser’s play Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love was refreshing. It was a different Canadian flavour, a welcome change, and one that resonated with me. This was the engaging fiction I was looking for.

            When the time came for me to breathe life into Vindictive, I wanted my readers to feel the same connection to contemporary urban Canada I felt reading these works.

            Crafting a Canadian setting for Vindictive was not only important to me as a Canadian writer, born and bred, but it was pivotal to the authenticity of the book. The reader had to know unequivocally that this book possessed a modern but still accessible Canadian self-identity.

            Vindictive takes place primarily in the fictional city of Fairporte, Ontario, Canada. As I write in the novel, Fairporte is a city “very much like Montreal, but one drenched in its own unique blend of French and English culture.” As a Canadian, it was important to me to acknowledge the unique duality of our French and English cultures. Due to this, the novel’s text encompasses both English and Quebecois dialogue (with English translation following). If anything aside from Poutine, Nanaimo bars, and Jimbo the Drag Queen reflects the uniqueness of the Canadian identity, it is our official bilingualism.

A small, playful element of language I feature in Vindictive is something others might consider a cultural stereotype. Still, that label and opinion do not negate fact: it is a real thing. “Eh” is a confirmational, a word attached at the end of sentences to confirm if something is a truth, and it is peppered throughout my novel. Specific characters have this colloquial expression tagged at the end of certain statements because I hear it in conversation regularly. Many do not even realize they speak it. I know I say it, so I wanted to incorporate it within my story. It may seem silly, but I find its use comforting, a familiar element of the Canadian identity, of home, however cliché it may seem.

             Vindictive takes the reader on a journey across Canada. From the snowy landscape of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley to the student hub of downtown Montreal. From Toronto’s upscale residential neighbourhood “The Bridle Path” to the LGBTQ-oriented corner of Church and Wellesley. Danger, adventure, and romance flow in abundance across this diverse Canadian terrain, converging at the nucleus that is the enigmatic city of Fairporte.

            Vindictive states that: “No form of revenge is petty; all revenge is reasonable.” Setting a novel entirely in Canada is also reasonable—and quite entertaining!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Ryan…and kudos on a fantastic cover!

Vindictive by Ryan Lawrence

GENRE: Thriller

BLURB

The best revenge is revenge. Getting it is all that matters.

Jules Cartell has it all: wealth; beauty; a handsome, loving husband; a partnership in her father’s law firm; and the top executive position at one of Canada’s leading corporations, Cartell Worldwide. Aside from her secret, problematic desire for the married owner of the internationally renowned Château Bergé, Jules believes she and her life are pretty perfect. But the discovery of an unforgivable crime perpetrated against her family by her husband, Phillip, years before the two met sets Jules down the path of revenge. There is no option for forgiveness. Phillip has to pay. An eye for an eye.

It is said that when seeking revenge, you should dig two graves. Someone from Jules’s past, someone aggrieved by her actions, seeks vengeance for themselves. This is an enemy without compassion, without morality, without mercy. An enemy who will accept no restitution short of Jules’s death.

In the city of Fairporte, ON, secrets, lies, and betrayal can be found everywhere. As adversaries close in, will Jules get revenge before her past catches up with her? Unexpected allies may be instrumental to her success. They may also be the key to her very survival.

EXCERPT

She cried for Ethan and for the bright-eyed girl she could no longer be. Jules wanted to run away from this place of death. She also wanted to run away from her selfish choice to ensure her survival, her future. Jules wished all of it had never happened. But it did happen, and she would have to live with it for the rest of her life.

“Ethan! No! Ethan!”

Startled, Jules quickly turned and looked in the direction of the shrieking bellow. It was William, tearing down the woods, screaming his brother’s name over and over again.

Having discovered his charges missing from the house, William had reluctantly gone about searching for them outside. Sadly, it was not soon enough to intervene and prevent the devastating incident.

When William finally reached the clearing, he stopped at the edge of the lake and looked out upon the scene of broken ice and still water. With clenched fists, he fell to his knees and screamed in anguish. His brother was dead and gone, swallowed whole by the cold, murky depths.

Angrily turning towards Jules, William showered upon her a rage so pure, so palpable it might as well have been a physical smack across her face. His glare was full of hate. And so were his words.

“Why didn’t you help him, you fucking bitch?! You did nothing! You let him drown!”

Jules stood as immobile as a stone and ate her emotions, swallowing all her sadness, guilt, and self-reproach. She owned the choice she had made. The only one possible. The correct choice. She understood William’s pain, but she was well aware of his vile nature.

Jules had her suspicions of what might diffuse her attacker: using his own words—his ignorance and prejudice—against him. Maybe then he would leave her alone. She had only done what was necessary. All she could do.

And who was he to blame her anyway? Was he there when it happened? No! He had been too busy playing video games to look after them, too busy to save his brother, too busy to have prevented all of this in the first place.

Be mean, Jules silently told herself. Act like a grown-up.

With unwavering resolve, staring William down with cold, hard eyes, Jules scoffed, “What the hell could I have done? I’m just a girl. Right?”

GOODREADS BLURB

Ellie Coleman wants justice.

Her father Aaron was viciously assaulted by Robert Lee Maggard six months earlier, and she is obsessed with making sure that Maggard pays, and pays dearly.

Robert Lee Maggard wants revenge.

He meant to kill Aaron Coleman, but came up short. And now Aaron’s daughter is pushing his trial forward, a trial that he thought he’d avoided with a plea bargain.

When the chaos of a raging flood provides Maggard the opportunity to engineer a violent escape from jail, he steals a boat and heads toward the isolated farmhouse where Ellie and her father are stranded by floodwaters as wide as a lake.

Ellie Coleman wants justice. Robert Lee Maggard wants revenge. Only one of them will prevail…

LIGHT A CANDLE FOR THE BEAST by Echo Shea

This novella has a very pretty cover, but when I saw the raven I knew there was more to the story than sugar and spice. Because this is so short and it is Friday the 13th, I am including my review..

Curses don’t happen instantly.
I waited months for him to come for her..

Book Beginnings

Silence casts a pall over the graveyard in the late twilight of evening, row upon row of ancestors resting beneath their marble stones. Thorns cut into my hands as I stand above the few I’ve known, all those I’ve loved  – my mother, my father, and both of my sisters..

~~~~~~~~~~~~.
SYNOPSIS.
If you’ve ever been caught in a riptide, pulled down into the water, then you know me. Or, more accurately, what I’m like when I’m angry.
Delia was beautiful, smart, and kind. He wasn’t. He said he loved her, but he didn’t know what love was. He was manipulative and cruel—more than a thief. A beast.
All she wanted was a rose…
These are the words on my sister’s grave. Her sadness, her obsession, forever a reminder I didn’t–couldn’t save her.
I’m not vindictive or cruel. I’m simply as the river–my memory is winding and my reach is long. I watched him steal her beauty, her essence. Watched him become a beast. He thought he’d get away with it, thought he’d go free.
I lay a rose upon my sister’s grave.
Light a candle for the beast.
MY REVIEW
.
Everything about Light a Candle for the Beast by Echo Shea appealed to me.
The punch packed into this super short is mind blowing.
I saw the raven or crow (Errol), whichever you would like to call it, and I knew it was watching over her.
The ghost of her sister talks with her.
It makes me wonder, does our need for revenge and our grief drive us to do things we normally wouldn’t do?
How far would you go to avenge the wrong done to one you loved?
Would you let it destroy you?
This wasn’t what I thought it would be, but I loved the surprise. It is even better than I anticipated.
Scurry, little spiders,scurry on your way.
For I am just a predator, searching for my prey.
OMG. I LOVE it. I raced through the pages. It is super short, but I think I may have broke a record. LOL
If you are not familiar with Echo Shea, now is the perfect time! Love, revenge, regret, forgiveness, and did I say love?
I received this novella in return for an honest and unbiased review from Roane Publishing.
MY REVIEW
I have read a couple of I C Camelleri’s novels and when she offered me a copy of Weeks of Lies to read and review, I jumped all over it. Romance with twists and turns that will keep you guessing and wondering, do you really want Beth to get her man?
Beth Banks was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but she was not a happy person. Her mother had been murdered right in front of her when she was five years old and her father barely acknowledged her existence.  She is like the spoiled rich kids you see on TV, denied nothing, partying, shopping and lavishly throwing their money around. Her desire to be loved made her push the envelope. Friends? Not many. Most followed her around, just wanting to be a part of the gravy train.
Rob Menenez, the damaged hero (?) is a lawyer, but had no job. He is quite the hunk and rejects her at every turn. That makes her want him all the more. He was good and kind, or so she thought. He has his moments, but crosses the line of proper dating etiquette.
He came in and out of her life in a weeks time, then vanished. She had fallen in love with him and thought he had done the same. Partying and meaningless sex, was this going to be her life?
Elena, Rob’s sister, was into internet pornography. We all know sex sells. But, love…the things we do for the one we love knows no bounds. We will overlook their faults, no matter how bad they are, staying by their side no matter what.
New Years Day and she rang it in on a dead note and I mean a really dead note. Her father is found dead of a suicide.
Here we go…
Suicide? I don’t know about you, but I’m not buying it. Why? How? Who?
She went in search of Rob and stepped in it. He had warned her repeatedly that he couldn’t be trusted and he would be leaving shortly, but she didn’t want to hear it and turned a deaf ear. We know how that goes. The mind is a powerful thing, capable of twisting and turning things, allowing us to believe in what we want.
As I go through Beth’s week with Rob, I feel her loneliness and insecurity, her desperate need to be loved. Her mother’s death haunts her dreams. She would drift off, as if in a trance, her mind taking her where where it would, dreaming of this or that. She never anticipated what a positive influence this elusive man would have on her.
Happy are the reckless and damned are the deep thinkers.
It is writing like this that makes I C Camilleri such a great author. Her insight into what drives her characters, as if they are real, does bring them to life on the pages. She did a wonderful job of articulating Beth’s slow growth, from a spoiled brat to a real person. From the buy all, me, me, me attitude, to giving for the sake of doing something just because you are able to help.
“Now don’t you dare move from there, you handsome naked man.” I couldn’t help but laugh. I can picture Beth standing there, naked herself, hands on her hips, and telling him she will be right back.
The twists began early in the book and kept right on coming. I wasn’t sure itI was going. I C Camilleri caught me off guard and kept me off balance. Can we have a happy ever after? Do we want a happy after, considering what Rob has done? I guess, like me, you will have to read the book. I do not think you will be disappointed.
 I received this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
