MY REVIEW

I love that Perry Prete’s stories are inspired by his real life career as a paramedic in Ottawa and his passion for his work shines through his words.

A man is down at Parliament Hill and they are being tight lipped about their response. WTF Tennant, a paramedic in Ottawa, had been hand picked to respond, but for what and why? Galen, his cop friend, was there too. What had they gotten into?

Since the loss of his wife, Maddy, he had changed. He would have never acted impulsively. We all know that life goes on and now Ethan has a new girl, Becky. She had left, but is now back. She couldn’t stay away. I love his friends and would wish for the same.

Lots of action. Domestic violence, over doses and an attack by the bad guys that knew Ethan Tennant had something they wanted.

The story took a sharp turn and it took me to a very scary, frightening place, where all the guys are bad ones. but Ethan is cool, calm and collected with this latest confrontation.

“You’re a shit magnet, you know!” That does describe Ethan to a T. Trouble seems to be his middle name.

Well Perry…another fabulous thriller that had me looking around corners, over my shoulder and wanting Ethan by my side as danger ramps up, seeing how he manages to make it through…with bumps and bruises.

A Horse, A Fox, And A Gypsy Bride by Lawna Mackie @lawnamackie

.

I have read several stories by Lawna Mackie now and I am definitely hooked on her writing. I’ve read about a gargoyle, a cowboy, and now a gypsy. She also has some great covers. And that tagline…makes me want to go to the circus and meet Avalon.

Gypsy Bride

Amazon / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

Gypsy Bride is my third book by Lawna Mackie and I was eager to begin reading. I enjoyed My Gargoyle and Stiletto & Spurs, so now it’s off to the circus. I don’t find a lot of gypsy stories and I do love to read about the free spirit of the Romani.

Maverick and his partner were roused from bed by a ringing telephone. Their presence was requested in helping to find a missing girl. That scene had me smiling and looking forward to another fun read by Lawna Mackie.

Avalon’s grandmother had said…Go…Meet your destiny. So she did. Now, she’s stranded.

A beautiful, talented Romani woman, a circus performer, horses and a fox to work with, two handsome men vying for her hand in marriage and a domineering father. I don’t think I have read about a fox as a woman’s friend and I do like that Lawna Mackie incorporates the unique in her stories.

Her biological clock is ticking…and there he is, to the rescue. It may be instalove for him, but it is destiny for her.

Sizzling hot romance meets some bumps on the road to bliss.

Lawna Mackie writes with wonderful creativity making her characters come to life, making me become involved in their lives and well being, and me hanging on every word to learn their story.

GOODREADS BLURB

Free spirited, athletic and absolutely stunning. He stared at the beautiful horse who had captured the audience’s attention—then he saw her. Astride the magnificent animal, Avalon Boswell commanded the horse’s attention without so much as a bridle or saddle.
In the small town of Black Hills, Montana, Park Ranger, Maverick McGregor had not expected Avalon the Romani Gypsy horse rider to capture and control his heart the way she did with her horses.

After listening to her tarot card-reading grandmother, Avalon ends up being rescued off the mountain by Maverick—maybe her grandmother had been correct. Avalon is dedicated to the equestrian show An Evening Under the Stars. Night after night she performs effortlessly but time is running out for her. Prearranged marriages were a thing of the past, but her father refused to break her upcoming nuptials.

With the risk of losing everything including Maverick, Avalon makes a deal. She has five days to convince her fiancé she is not the woman for him, and then somehow try to convince Maverick he’s the only one for her.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lawna Mackie

Lawna Mackie was born in Jasper, Alberta. After finishing high school and post secondary she moved to Calgary, Alberta, married her husband and settled in the small town of Didsbury, Alberta.

Lawna would tell you that a lot of her creativity comes from her mother, who could design and build, just about anything. Her mother never lacked the talent for hand-making toys. “She always amazed me. My brother and I were never bored because she made us flutes, toy cars, and even parallel bars in the trees,” she explains.

Her other creative inspiration comes from her husband Jeff, and the many adventures they have had. It was on one particular trip to British Columbia, when she stopped at the Enchanted Forrest that the fairy tale world called to her to write a story.

Along with the love she has for her husband and family, is the deep admiration and compassion she has for animals. “They bring so much joy and inspiration to my life I don’t know how I would ever live without them,” she says. Alaskan Malamutes are near and dear to her heart. With one Malamute, one Bichon Shih Tzu, one farm cat and a Bengal, her house is never quiet.

Lawna writes contemporary romance and paranormals. One fan writes, “Lawna’s books are well-written and are impossibly good! The scenes are unexpected and very creative. I highly recommend her books!”

Sherry’s Shelves #181- Golf & Senior Bowl #Senior Bowl

.

Sherry’s Shelves #181 is my weekly update from 1.24.19 – 1.30.19.

~~~
Hi Everyone. Hope you had a great week and managed to stay warm at this cold weather hits. The sun may be out here in Florida, but, man oh man, it is chilly. I get goose bumps if there is a slight breeze and it’s under 70. I forgot to look at the grass this morning, but the temp was under 40. Yesterday we had frost, YUK! That’s just wrong
I don’t know if I am having allergy attacks or getting a cold, OH NO. I started last year with a horrible case of the flu, so I am leery of being out and about this time of year. Looks like maybe I wasn’t careful enough, you know, WASH YOUR HANDS, DON’T TOUCH YOUR FACE, type of stuff.
Oh well, such is life…and there is lots of blogging to do. Let me know what your week has been like and I hope you have a good one.
We played golf on Tuesday and this is how I felt.
Image may contain: Eric Fundin and Sherry Snider Fundin, people standing, tree, golf, sky, grass, outdoor and nature
This is how Mr Wonderful felt.
Image may contain: Eric Fundin, smiling, standing, outdoor and nature
And I gave up…
Image may contain: Sherry Snider Fundin and Eric Fundin, people smiling, hat, closeup and outdoor
What you can’t see…I had a car blanket wrapped around my legs too. LOL
And…the Reese’s Senior Bowl is in town so we made a quick stop in Mobile, Alabama. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate and the rain finally moved in. Didn’t bother me. I was so cold, I was over it anyway. LOL Damn this getting older. When I was even 5 years younger, this wouldn’t have stopped me. Now it’ been there, done that, have the T-shirt…and I do have the T-shirt. LOL
Image may contain: sky and outdoor
Image may contain: one or more people, people playing sports, stadium, football, basketball court and outdoor
How about you? Are you a cold weather lover, or is the steamy tropics for you?
Book Tour Grand Finale for An Alaskan Proposal By Beth Carpenter
We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops you can see snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:
Launch – Note from the Author
. . . AN ALASKAN PROPOSAL is the fourth story in the Northern Lights series. It’s a classic “fish out of water” romance, set in Alaska. There are dogs, and outdoor scenes, and Leith’s niece Emma, who is a bundle of energy. I think you’ll like it. Thanks to all the bloggers and reviewers on this tour.
And if you’re making any fresh starts this new year, I hope they lead to happily-ever-after.
Baroness Book Trove – Review
“An Alaskan Proposal by Beth Carpenter is delightful. I enjoyed visiting the spectacular places in Alaska along with Sabrina. . . . The story was fabulously written, and descriptions of the scenery were superb. It makes me want to visit Alaska even more. The characters all had their quirks and traits. . . . I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great romance.”
It’s All About the Romance – Excerpt
What was she doing here, climbing a mountain, in Alaska, in the rain? Sabrina didn’t hike. She didn’t wear ugly boots and plastic ponchos. At least the old Sabrina didn’t. The new Sabrina—the one she’d pretty much created out of thin air—loved spending time outdoors. At least that was the story she’d sold Orson Outfitters’ management during her job interview, and that was the story she intended to live up to. Today’s team-builder outing was her first test.
You’d think all those hours at the gym would have prepared her for this, but it turned out running on a treadmill and hiking rough trails weren’t quite the same. Her muscles complained, forcefully. Still, she couldn’t quit, or everyone would know she was an impostor.
Reading Is My SuperPower – Review
“Carpenter weaves another compelling story in An Alaskan Proposal – the setting, the characters, the writing style all perfectly on point. I loved the banter between Leith and Sabrina, their developing friendship, and those kisses! Tal & Boomer absolutely delighted me, and I hope we get to spend more time with them (in Volta’s story perhaps?). It’s always great to visit with old friends from previous books in the series, too, but this book works nicely as a standalone if you’re just starting here.”
underneath the covers – Excerpt
Sabrina didn’t even own rainwear. Well, technically there was that vintage Laura Wilkes umbrella she’d gotten at an estate sale, but Sabrina considered that more art than protection. Dealing with rain hadn’t been a big part of her life as a fashion buyer in Scottsdale. But that was then.
Now Sabrina was doing the nature thing in Alaska, and she wasn’t equipped for it. Fortunately, Clara, being the experienced mom she was, carried extra folding ponchos in her glove compartment and had loaned Sabrina one at the beginning of the hike. It had done the job, but Sabrina was glad the rain had finally stopped and she could peel it off.
Book by Book – Review
“Take another trip to Alaska with Beth Carpenter’s latest Northern Lights novel, An Alaskan Proposal. Full of outdoorsy adventure and entertaining banter, it’s a contemporary romance not to be missed. . . . A fun and romantic story, it’s sure to please other lovers of contemporary romance as well (even without reading the rest of the books in the series). Pick it up today!”
The Power of Words – Review
It was the Alaskan setting of this series that initially drew me to it, and it’s Beth Carpenter’s smooth writing, warm characters, and creative storytelling that keep me coming back to her books. . . . This is just a great series that I wish could go on and on, for there’s many more stories to tell. . . . Highly recommended.”
Reading On The Edge – Excerpt
Okay. A tent. Let’s see what she had to work with. Sabrina opened the drawstring at the top of the bag and dumped everything out. Hmm. A bunch of nylon, two short bundles of colored sticks, small metal sticks with hooks on the ends and…oh, instructions. Good. She grabbed the paper and looked at the picture. Step one: spread tent on the ground.
Clear enough. She unrolled the nylon and spread it in a neat rectangle. Presumably the heavier side was the bottom, and the net side went up. So far, so good.
Step two: assemble shock-corded tent poles. Was that stick in the picture the big one or one of the little ones? Another gust sent a shiver up her arms. She stamped her feet. It was hard to concentrate when she was so cold.
“Problems?”
Thoughts of a Blonde – Review
“Beth Carpenter’s descriptively toned voice makes us feel like we’re right there in picturesque Alaska in the latest from her Northern Lights series! The gorgeous setting is divine, the characters nab our attention quickly and their sweet love story warms soul throughout. Lots of heart, riddled with emotion and just an overall fun read. A nice addition to this wonderful series!”
Hearts & Scribbles – Excerpt
Sabrina turned to see Clara and all the other employees gathered behind her staring at the tent and at her. Super. Walter pushed through the crowd.
“What happened here?”
Sabrina swallowed. “It was my fault. I thought it would save some mess and equipment if I heated the beans in the fire.”
Walter narrowed his eyes. “You put the cans in the fire without opening them?”
Sabrina nodded.
“Any casualties?”
“Only the tent.”
E-Romance News – Excerpt
“Like I said, we don’t really teach basic woodcraft. Maybe you could register for a course from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, this fall.”
“Fall is too late. My assignment here ends September first, when the store managers send in their evaluations. Only the top half move on to the next level of training. Besides…” She paused, taking a sudden interest in the worn vinyl floor.
“Besides, what?”
She took a breath and looked up. “After putting down deposits on my apartment and utilities, I’m a little short on cash right now. I thought maybe we could work out some sort of barter arrangement?”
Rockin’ Book Reviews – Review
“The characters are so personable, they feel real: They will truly “win your heart”! . . . The dreamy Alaskan setting is perfect and described well. . . . I offer a Five Stars rating for this incredible, well written novel.”
Kimber Li – Excerpt
Dinner at his sister’s had gone just about the way he’d expected. Volta, with all the subtlety of a locomotive, had seated him next to the new nurse at the table and kept throwing out random pieces of information designed to force them to bond. “Leith, Marley’s blood type is B negative, just like yours and mine. That’s only two percent of the population. Interesting coincidence, huh?”
What did you say to something like that? Marley had seemed like a perfectly nice person, but after going through a divorce three years ago, Leith had decided the safest route was to avoid getting involved with women, period. So, when Volta made a point of asking him if he had a date for the wedding in front of Marley so that he’d almost be forced to invite her, it had given him great satisfaction to assure her that, yes, he did have a date. He’d almost laughed out loud at the expression on his sister’s face when her plot failed.
Heidi Reads… – Review
“Another great book in the Northern Lights series! I really enjoyed the easy friendship that developed between Leith and Sabrina. . . . I loved the Alaskan setting and all the camping and exploring described. . . . A great cast of characters made this a well-rounded story.”
Becky on Books – Review
“Such a sweet romance! . . . I love the Alaskan setting of this series, and the people in it are just wonderful too. I loved Sabrina and Leith, and watching them go from two people who aren’t quite sure what to make of the other to friends to more was just delightful.”
Colorimetry – Excerpt
She pretended to be studying the instructions, hoping he’d walk away, but he remained where he was. “I’m Leith Jordan.”
“Sabrina Bell.”
He nodded. “So, Sabrina. Why are you here?”
“For the team-builder, obviously.”
“No, I mean why are you in Alaska? Why didn’t you stay in Arizona?”
“I came for the job.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You came all the way to Alaska to work at the Orson Outfitters store?”
Remembrancy – Review
“Through Sabrina’s eyes, Beth Carpenter gives readers a taste of the majesty and beauty of Alaska and through Leith and his niece, the readers get to experience some of the many adventures. Oh, and there’s a sweet romance full of mutual attraction and plenty of chemistry brewing in there too.”
Wishful Endings – Excerpt
“Stop!” Leith finally yelled loud enough to get through to her. She turned. The creature at the corner of the parking lot looked toward him as well.
Sabrina scowled at him. “What? I just want to help that dog. He seems shy. I wonder if someone abandoned him.”
“The reason he’s shy around people is because he’s not a dog.” Leith grabbed her elbow and dragged her back toward the safety of the Land Cruiser. “He’s a wolf.”
Locks, Hooks and Books – Review
“I just loved the chemistry between Sabrina and Leith. . . . I could not put it down until I was finished with it a few hours later. . . . I am giving An Alaskan Proposal a very well deserved five plus stars and I highly recommend it. I can not wait to go back to read the previous books in the series and look forward to more by Beth Carpenter in the future.”
EmpowerMoms – Review
“I absolutely loved this book! . . . I loved the imagery of Alaska and the feel of community I got from reading this story. The main characters Sabrina and Leith were great. . . . I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.”
MY REVIEW
I love the cover for Scraps of Paper by Kathryn Meyer Griffith…and that tagline…how could I possibly resist? I feel a sense of foreboding. The book is free everywhere, so feel free to grab a copy.
After two stagnant years of her life, Abigail has found out that her husband, Joel, had been murdered. Misery put her on the road in search of a new life.
She was determined to become a new person.
To find time to live and love.
Spookie Town called to her.
The past and the present merge and the mystery grows.
I love the direction she goes to solve the mystery of Emily and her kids disappearances. She moves into the an empty house and begins to find Scraps of Paper. To find the answers to the mystery makes me think of a scavenger hunt.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith has a way with words and once I begin one of her books, it is hard to put it down. So true with Scraps of Paper. I felt Abigail’s pain and her need to find a way to go on after her husband’s death. When she moves into the empty house, the former tenants mystery becomes hers. She feels a need to find out happened to them because we all need answers…don’t we?
ABOUT KATHRYN MEYER GRIFFITH
100_8628
Since childhood I’ve been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over forty-six years ago now, and have had twenty-seven (nine romantic horror, two horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance, four thrillers, one non-fiction short story collection, and six murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from various traditional publishers since 1984. But I’ve gone into self-publishing in a big way since 2012; and upon getting all my previous books’ full rights back for the first time in 35 years, have self-published all of them. My Dinosaur Lake novels and Spookie Town Murder Mysteries (Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away, Ghosts Beneath Us, Witches Among Us and What Lies Beneath the Graves) are my best-sellers.
I’ve been married to Russell for over forty years; have a son, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois. We have a quirky cat, Sasha, and the three of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk/classic rock singer in my youth with my late brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.
Giveaway – Rideshares, Wrecks and Sex by Uber Driver Joe F N Schmo @f_schmo
.
Rideshares, Wrecks, and Sex:
Confessions of a Convicted Uber Driver
by Joe F. N. Schmo
Genre: Comedic Adventure
An Uber driver is expected to be courteous and attentive, both to their passengers and to those on the road. They are not expected to accept an invitation to a swinger party, flee the scene of a fatal accident, nor are they expected to be a convicted felon on probation.
Unfortunately, this Joe Schmo is not your everyday Uber driver.
As most Uber drivers do, Joe began sharing rides with the audacious hope to one day escape the legal and financial road blocks stalling his merger onto the freeway of creative success. But when a typical shift U-turns into a series of detours involving Android ordered lovers, herpes ridden riders, sexy sorority sisters, a botched bachelor party, and blundering bank robbers, he arrives (at gunpoint) miles from his desired destination.
“Rideshares, Wrecks, and Sex: Confessions of a Convicted Uber Driver” is a narrative nonfiction based upon actual events that transpired over the year Joe covertly drove for Uber while on intensive probation. He confesses outlandish details in a highlight reel of wrecks (both car and train) and sex, effectively answering the question every Uber rider has begged to know from their driver: “What’s your craziest story?”
Joe F. N. Schmo, a 30-something latent child prodigy, is on a quest to obtain free Rockstar for life and plans to use it to obtain his Ph.D in Upsetting the Status Quo. Once earned, he hopes to use his written works as a vehicle to turn underinformed perceptions on their thick skulls (among other abhorrently selfish goals).
After completing over 1,000 rideshares for Uber while on intensive probation, Joe has encountered it all (save for alien abductions and spontaneous combustion) and is über qualified to write a confessional with such a titilating title.
Prior to his salacious adventures, Joe earned his B.A. in Film and Media Production where he wrote, produced, directed, and edited several short films. This experience sculpted him into the kind of asshole who quotes from random films and includes obscure pop culture references into his written works.
Joe’s masterpiece, “Rideshares, Wrecks, and Sex: Confessions of a Convicted Uber Driver” is a culmination of his of film background, sharing rides with Uber, and myriad adverse experiences. It was NOT written to please those stiff, literary types, but to appeal to the haughty neophytes who attest e-books are superior to the printed page.
Currently, Joe is working on his encore, “Jackpot,” which, much like “Rideshares, Wrecks, and Sex, was written with the intention to be adapted into a feature film (as it is his narcissistic goal to direct his own film adaptations).
