When Stalking Turns To Murder – Sunrise Awakening by Amanda Seigrist @amanda_siegrist

Sunrise Awakening by Amanda Siegrist is a romantic suspense novel I recommend traveling down the road on the cover to arrive at your destination…the end.

I love the ominous tag line.

Sunrise Awakening

Goodreads  /  Amazon US Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA

MY REVIEW

Sunrise Awakening is Amanda Siegrist’s debut into the romantic suspense world, and she did a great job, using misdirection and multiple villains to distract me.

The opening was fantastic. I couldn’t help but laugh at myself for being hooked so fast and I must say, I believed every word of it.

Jake, literally, bumped into Maddie, and it wasn’t only the coffee that burned him. He left a definite impression on her too. BUT…

Our killer is was pissed, had his eye on her first and was even angrier when they hooked up. Will that put Jake on the killer’s radar too…and her brother, who is very protective and comes to her aid when things begin to really heat up. Good thing Jake and Lucas quickly become friends.

I didn’t see it coming. Amanda Siegrist led me down a path that was so muddied I could not see clearly. She keeps the killer’s identity hidden, pulling me here and there, just like Jake and Maddie’s romance.

I love the push and pull of romantic suspense as danger and terror swirl around the characters. Keeps more than one story going on and creates an sense of anticipation, waiting for evil to rear its ugly head.

Maddie isn’t the only one in danger.

Sunrise Awakening has one of those don’t do it moments…don’t go in the basement, don’t open the door, don’t go outside…

If you do, you just may find yourself in the dark, alone…

I can’t imagine what it would feel like, knowing you are going to be killed….being unable to do anything to help yourself as you wait to die, and the killer lovin’ every minute of it.

The murders are brutal, savage. The killer enjoyed inflicting pain, torturing the victims with fear and terror and the knowledge that their pain increased his pleasure.

Sunrise Awakening by Amanda Siegrist has all the ingredients for a wonderful romantic suspense novel. There’s plenty of mystery, danger and anticipation of what would happen next. I am happy to know it was a debut novel, because if Amanda’s first one is this good, I can only imagine what is to come and I plan on being around to find out

Sunrise Awakening is the first book of the series and can stand alone.

GOODREADS BLURB

One thing has always driven Maddie Dalton up the wall—her brother acting too overprotective. After meeting Jake Anders, who makes her heart race, she finds he has the same annoying trait. Yet, she can’t help falling in love with him despite that. Of course, she should give him a small reprieve since someone’s stalking her. If only she could find the nerve to tell him.

Jake’s life is finally back on track, especially after meeting Maddie. When a murder rocks his small town, his life suddenly turns into chaos. The killer doesn’t stop at one body either. As he digs deeper into each case, he realizes Maddie is at the center of it all. He only wants to protect her, yet she fights him every step of the way. He’ll do anything to keep her safe, including telling her what to do.

Note: This book can be read as a standalone and ends with a happily ever after. However, if you read the epilogue, it will entice you to read book two, Sunset Darkening, which is coming soon.

Remote Viewing & The CIA – Vicki’s Key by P M Terrell @pmterrell

Vicki’s Key by P M Terrell has been sitting, ever so patiently, on my Kindle…waiting for me to find it again. It’s like that one sock that your washing machine eats, only I don’t think ya ever find that one, but I did find Vicki’s Key. And I am glad that I did.

This was a fabulous read and I would love to visit Vicki again, and again, and again….

Vicki's Key (Black Swamp Mysteries, #2)Goodreads  /  Amazon US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA

MY REVIEW

I found the true aspects of the government use and involvement in the psychic truly amazing.

I love everything about the book, the swamp for burying bodies, secrets to be revealed and remote viewing to exotic locations…and into danger. But, sometimes, danger is closer than you think.

The CIA wanted her to stay, but after her last mission, she knew it was time to move on. Does she really believe they would let her walk away?

She was an orphan, with siblings she knew nothing about. She didn’t know how the CIA found her. She grew up in an institutional setting under their guidance and control, treated like nothing more than a lab rat, taught to perform. They wanted her psychic ability, not her, the person. It’s a wonder she didn’t go mad or turn to the dark side.

She wanted a life…a normal life and she was going to Lumberton, North Carolina to find it. She would serve an apprenticeship, of sorts, with an old lady and her tropical fish. Easy peasy, right?

She immediately runs into Dylan Maguire, the fish lady’s nephew. Woo hoo to the hottie, but Vicki’s spidey senses are tingling, just a little for her, but a lot for me. I think there is much more to him than meets the eye, but I like him nonetheless. He has an air of danger, yet a sweetness and desire to please her.

It’s a good thing Dylan can cook, because Vicki can’t even brew a cup of coffee. Who is this man Dylan, loving, caring, thoughtful, romantic and sweet, yet fiery, passionate, protective and beware those who wish Vicki harm

Vicki can psychically project herself to a specific place and time, able to tell everything about the place, the people, and the events taking place. Better than GPS.

So…I wonder how long Vicki will contain her curiosity about the elusive Auntie and open the door to the forbidden room.

I love that the mystery and problems popped up early. Gets me involved, invested in the story and the characters. I really do think thing’s are ‘fishy’, but who is the guilty party and what it’s all about I can’t say for sure…yet. Will she be in danger? And from whom?

The mystery is slow building. It is no surprise they both have secrets, baggage that has followed them to Lumberton. P M Terrell has created mysteries within mysteries and I am unable to figure them out. She weaves intrigue and danger into a suspenseful romance with characters I love to hate and love to love. I am a sucker for happy ever after endings and I am waiting for Vicki’s knight in tarnished armor to come to her rescue. Now…that’s a surprise!

P M Terrell keeps the romance light and sweet.

Vicki’s Key by P M Terrell had everything I could want and more. Some truth, some fiction, woven into a rich and complicated tale that left me wanting more.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Vicki’s Key by P M Terrell.

Is She Haunted…Or is there a Deadly Ruse by E Michael Helms @EMichaelHelms

I love the Mac McClellan Mystery Series by E Michael Helms.

Mac McClellan makes me think of Magnum PI and Rockford Files.

Sooo, come on in for some chuckles along with the mystery.

Deadly Ruse (Mac McClellan #2)

Amazon  US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA  /  Goodreads

Cover:  Grace M Conti-Zilsberger

MY REVIEW

Deadly Ruse is Book II of the Mac McClellan Mystery series. These novels will stand alone.

What do a blown up boat, a crashed airplane, sparkling “ice” and drugs have in common…Mac McClellan.

Mac is a former Marine and after helping to solve a crime in Deadly Catch, Book I, he has decided to become a Private Investigator.

Kate is his girlfriend. On a date with Mac, a ghost enters her life. She is sure her ex boyfriend has risen from the dead. She doesn’t realize how lucky she was to have escaped when she did.

The case of Dead Man Walking will be Mac’s introduction to becoming a private investigator. It is not a dream, but more like a nightmare come back to haunt Kate and it could have deadly consequences..

Mac lives in a camper in the Florida Panhandle. Shades of Rockford Files come to mind and I am very familiar with the territory. I love when the characters cross the same bridges and drive the same streets I have traveled.

Mac plows through interviews, quickly getting the hang of it, learning a little finesse one interview at a time.

Deadly Ruse is a twisted web of lies and deceit. We have a lot of suspects and intrigue. E Micheal Helms keeps the mystery and suspense building as we travel the Gulf Coast looking for answers. The mystery stretches from Georgia, through Florida and into South America. Who is alive? Who is dead? And why? I did need a flow chart to help me separate the good from the bad, but it all comes together in the end.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Deadly Ruse by E Michael Helms.

GOODREADS BLURB

Mac’s girlfriend, Kate Bell, thinks she’s seen a ghost. Wes Harrison, Kate’s former boyfriend, supposedly perished twelve years ago in a boating accident. But now she swears a man she spotted in a crowded theater lobby is Wes. Mac has his doubts–it was only a fleeting glimpse. But to calm her shattered nerves, he starts making inquiries.

A clue leads him from his home in St. George, Florida, to a Texas orphanage. There he uncovers startling information that turns both his and Kate’s world upside-down. Diamond smuggling, sex, deceit, and murder are just part of the twisted tale that emerges from Kate’s earlier life. Using wit, grit, and the ingrained military training of a former Marine, Mac starts to fit the pieces of this scrambled puzzle together.

Further clues point to the Palmetto Royale Casino and Resort near St. George. He and Kate discover that the casino is a front for big drug deals. When they barely escape a murder attempt, Mac knows he’s on the right track.

ABOUT E MICHAEL HELMS

E.Michael Helms

I was born in Georgia way back in the last century but grew up and lived most of my life on the Gulf Coast of Florida in Panama City (beautiful beaches, girls galore–ah, the memories!). In 2004 my wife and I moved to the Upstate region of South Carolina in the shadows of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, a land of stunning vistas and numerous waterfalls.
.
I’ve been traditionally published since 1990 when my Vietnam War memoir, The Proud Bastards, launched. TPB chronicles my time as a combat U.S. Marine in 1967-68. It’s still in print after all these years, currently with Simon & Schuster/Pocket. I’ve since written a few novels in different genres. I’m also working on a collection of “Dinger, PI” short stories that are being published on Motive Means Opportunity, a crime/mystery blog I share with two other writers of the same ilk. Currently I’m writing the Mac McClellan Mystery series which is set along the coast of the Florida Panhandle where I grew up.

Six Year Old Killer Triplets – Murderous Little Darlings by John Hennessy @ _JohnHennessy

.

After reading this Murderous Little Darlings novella by John Hennessy, I ‘thirst’ for the full length story. All this did was whet my appetite for more.

Murderous Little Darlings by John Hennessy was FREE at the time of scheduling, but be sure and look for the “0”.

Murderous Little Darlings (A Tale of Vampires, #1)Goodreads  /  Amazon US  /  Amazon UK Amazon CA

MY ONE SENTENCE REVIEW

OMG, Rocco sucks the blood, then sucks his thumb, and my sick little mind smiles at the picture in my head, as I read about these six year old triplets who go on a murderous rampage, and Marcus knows no one will suspect them, because they are only six years old when the first murder happens…BUT, to really make this a great story, I think John Hennessy needs to make it a full length novel, thus filling in the details and plot holes that left me wanting….MORE.

2016 saw the release of the prequel to this title, called Dawn of the New Breed.

You may wish to read this first, but it is not necessary in order to enjoy Murderous Little Darlings).

Three siblings. An endless list of victims. A whole lot of time to kill.

* * *

With two specimens of the undead on either side of her, Juliana knew there was no escape. Kill the one they had selected for her, or be killed, and become one of them. What had the neighbours in the road called them, back when their childhood pranks were just that?

Oh yes, she remembered now. Murderous Little Darlings. They had the faces of angels, but possessed the very soul of the Devil.

Marcus had fully embraced his vampire side from the moment he was born. Rocco was the second eldest, and had fought the temptation all of his life. Then Marcus finally broke him.

That just left Juliana. Will she resist them, or join in the hunt?

Women Scorned – Room For Doubt by Nancy Cole Silverman @NancyColeSilve1

I was excited to be approved through NetGalley for Room For Doubt by Nancy Cole Silverman.

My thanks go out to Henery Press and Nancy Cole Silverman.

Room For Doubt (The Carol Childs Mysteries, #4)

Goodreads  /  Amazon US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA

MY REVIEW

Room For Doubt by Nancy Cole Silverman spoke to me. I love vengeful women who turn into vigilantes to give those who abuse the ultimate punishment.

Carol Childs, a radio reporter, is called to a hanging at the Hollywood sign. It is ruled a suicide but she doesn’t believe it. Neither does a dogged PI who seeks her out. He has some questions of his own and sticks to her like glue.

She blows him off and I got my first laugh when he called into her radio show. I do like humor with my mystery and murder. Because of him, she backs into her new radio show becoming a success right out of the gate.

Mustang Sally calls into the show. She claims she is part of a group of female assassins called the Butterflies and their goal is to protect women from the men who prey on them. Could it be true or is she just a quack?

Carol finds out that Sally is talking too much, making herself a target, and there are those that want her secrets kept secret.

Carol uses Chase to set up her own plan for Mustang Sally, though she holds him at arms length. The romance is not the story, but I can see an attraction that could develop into more. He is very persistent…and patient. Flawed, but in my book still a good catch. I quickly grew into like with him.

I love vigilante justice, even though it can become skewed. All too often what starts out as a ‘good’ thing can turn bad, but it is easy to understand their motivation.

Room For Doubt is not quite what I thought it would be. It seems more along the lines of a cozy mystery, than the dark and disturbing thriller I expected. All in all, it is an interesting story and one I would recommend.

GOODREADS BLURB

“Grips a reader from the first page, offering an addictive mix of wit and suspense. Silverman is a master at crafting ripped-from-the-headlines storylines that feature a smart, appealing protagonist. Room for Doubt leaves no doubt that this is one of the strongest contemporary mystery series out there.” – Ellen Byron, Award-winning Author of Plantation Shudders

When radio reporter Carol Childs is called to a crime scene in the Hollywood Hills at five thirty in the morning, she’s convinced it must be a publicity stunt to promote a new movie. That is, until she sees the body hanging from the center of the Hollywood sign. The police are quick to rule it a suicide, but something doesn’t add up for Carol. Particularly after a mysterious caller named Mustang Sally confesses to the murder on the air and threatens to kill again.

With the help of an incorrigible PI, her best friend, and a kooky psychic, Carol is drawn into the world of contract killers and women scorned. As she races to find the real killer, she finds herself faced with a decision that will challenge everything she thought she knew.

Amazon US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA  /  Goodreads

Because In The Line of Duty is front and center, I chose to review it first, but I do plan on continuing with the rest of the series.

MY REVIEW

In The Line of Duty by Carolyn Arnold may not be the action packed, in your face suspense and danger that I love so much, but I do enjoy learning about the step by step procedures of a murder investigation, especially when it is one of their own…and the impact it has on the characters personal lives.

Carolyn Arnold has done her research, including the impact the media has on an investigation. I, too, think they dwell too much on the bad, never telling the whole story.

Madison is a detective with the Stiles Police Department and Troy, her boyfriend, is a member of their SWAT team. Their relationship takes a direct hit. Both of them were friends of the murdered officer, but Troy had grown up with him, been his best man and was the godfather of his children.

Troy’s nickname for Madison is Bulldog. She is tenacious, aggressive and determined, sometimes forgetting to eat and sleep. She’s like the energizer bunny, she doesn’t stop. Just the type of person you would want working your case, if you had one.

It takes a real knack to figure out who’s lying, who’s telling the truth, getting the information they need from uncooperative suspects and witnesses and Madison is like a dog with a bone, her mind putting the puzzle together, piece by piece.

I think their situation could actually be a benefit to their relationship if they could let the old baggage go, knock down some walls, and use the knowledge of the nature of the beast, their work, to overcome some of the bumps in the road sure to come their way. Imagine if you were the other half and not a police officer…their late nights, not knowing where they are and what they are doing, and the danger, never knowing if the car they pull over will have a criminal that will blow them away rather than be taken.

I became invested in the characters, even the most peripheral, because they all had their place in the story. Some were good, some were bad, but they all have a ring of truth to them. The police kept their cool, when they could have gunned down the suspects and got away with it. The bad guys did what bad guys do, lie and muddle the investigation.

I do like some humor with my danger and Carolyn Arnold supplied it. Madison and her partner Terry are quite a team and I look forward to more adventures with them

In The Line Of Duty by Carolyn Arnold rings of truth and realism, the slow and steady investigation into the murder of one of their own. I loved following each thread of the mystery, unraveling it a strand at a time, veering this way and that, eliminating one thread only to find another.

I only figured it out right before she told and I LOVE IT! Carolyn Arnold had to break it down for me. That is so rare, that I can only bow down and say I’m not worthy.

BLURB:

He devoted his life to seeking justice. But would she get any for him?

It was an ordinary day for police officer Barry Weir. It was the end of shift, he was tired, and he just wanted to get home to his wife and kids. But someone had other plans for him, shooting him down and forcing him to make the ultimate sacrifice.

When news of Weir’s murder reaches the department, it leaves Detective Madison Knight and every cop in the Stiles PD itching for revenge. It cuts Madison’s boyfriend, colleague, and Weir’s childhood friend, Troy Matthews, deepest of all, driving him away from everyone he loves just when they need one another the most.

With evidence pointing to a gang-related drive-by, Madison and her team investigate the town’s seedy underbelly in search of justice for their fallen brother. But the deeper they dig, the more convoluted the case becomes. Now they need to figure out if this was a random shooting as part of a gang initiation, a straight-up hate crime, or a targeted kill. But with members of the Stiles PD under attack, they have to do it fast…before more officers pay with their lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt from Chapter 3 of In the Line of Duty (Detective Madison Knight series)
Troy gripped the sink in the men’s washroom at the Stiles police station with both hands and stared at himself in the mirror. He’d lost men close to him before. The last one was two years ago, and the officer had been killed in a car accident while off duty. He’d left behind two kids and a wife. But Barry…he was different. Life always equaled death, of course. It was a simple equation to accept until it touched close to home. And that’s what Barry’s death was for him—personal.
Losing Barry made it clear just how dangerous this job could be and how fragile life was. One minute here, the next gone. Barry had just been pumping gas, a routine thing, something people did all the time without any thought to their safety. Those on the outside would say that’s the risk he took being in law enforcement. Yes, there was the chance any one of them wouldn’t return home from a shift, but it wasn’t something Troy consciously thought about before heading to work.
In fact, when serving in a SWAT capacity, he’d say it was one of the safest positions within the Stiles PD. SWAT had the toys, and when they showed up to manage a situation, it was often brought under control rather quickly. Even the majority of criminals didn’t want to tango with an AR-15 and armored vehicles. Besides, dwelling on one’s mortality wasn’t healthy. But when something like this happened to one of their own, it spurred on such self-reflection. It could have easily been him in the morgue, or one of his team members. Or Madison…
His insides quivered with rage as his heartbeat slowed with his grief. He squeezed his eyes shut.
 “I’ve got Dad’s car tonight,” Barry says. “We’ll take it out on the back roads and see what she’s really capable of.”
“Your dad’s a cop, Barry,” Troy reminds him.
“So? What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Barry takes a few steps down the hall of their high school but stops and spins when Troy doesn’t follow. “Come on, man. Don’t make me take Lyman.”
Troy came back from his thoughts and opened his eyes to find himself staring at his reflection.
That night had been one of the best ever. Barry had sent the car airborne by racing over the railway tracks on the outskirts of the city. They’d even conned some seniors into getting beer for them and drank it by the tracks later that night.
Barry had made Troy feel alive…
Pain knotted in his chest, the regrets over skipping drinks with Barry last week paired with losing a part of his childhood somehow.
Troy pinched the bridge of his nose as the memories continued to rush over him.
“I just got my acceptance letter.” Barry holds the envelope in his hand. “This college has the hottest chicks… Not that it would matter to you.”
“What does that mean?”
“It’s Lauren and Troy sitting in a tree…” Barry sings.
“Seriously? You’re like a girl sometimes, you know that? A big, emotional girl.”
“Hey!” Barry punches him playfully in the arm.
Madison punched him in the arm sometimes, too…
God, what would he have done if Madison were the one who’d been killed?
MY REVIEW
WOW. Blew me away.
Children of the Fifth Sun was not what I was expecting. It was SO much more.
Evolution. Where do we come from?
A deadly virus.
Intelligent non human life form.
Kelly is a handful, with his flippant comments and sarcasm, but he had become Freya’s handful and someone I would want at my side in times of trouble. At least you know where he stands and that you can always count on him
Amazing. I could not predict the ending, but I loved it.
So….strap yourself in, because this will be an action packed wild ride that takes you round the world in a nail biting, white knuckled, engrossing story.
Thousands of years ago, an ancient species from the sea saved humanity; now a cocky, free-diving photographer tortured by his past is the unlikely hero who must save the last of their kind from a global race between nations to control the creature’s power.
IN ALMOST EVERY BELIEF SYSTEM ON EARTH, there exists a single unifying mythos: thousands of years ago a great flood devastated the Earth’s inhabitants. From the ruins of this cataclysm, a race of beings emerged from the sea bestowing knowledge and culture upon humanity, saving us from our selfish drive toward extinction. Some say this race were “ancient aliens” who came to assist our evolution. But what if they weren’t alien at all? What if they evolved right here on Earth, alongside humans . . . and they are still here? And, what if the World’s governments already know?
Kelly Graham is a narcissistic, self-assured, freelance photographer specializing in underwater assignments. While on a project in the Amazon with his best friend, Chris D’Souza, a mysterious and beautiful government official, Freya Nilsson, enters Kelly’s life and turns it upside down. Her simple request to retrieve a strange object from deep underwater puts him in the middle of an international conspiracy. A conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history.
Read an excerpt:
Freya elegantly glided in front of Kelly, breaking his train of thought. Her slender body slid through the water with grace and ease. She must have sensed his stare, because she turned her head to face him and gave a huge, regulator-filled grin. Kelly stifled a laugh.
He turned back to his equipment to check their depth—sixty-five feet. They were at the sea floor. It wasn’t very deep, but this was where it was supposed to be. He motioned his right arm to get Freya’s attention. He then signaled for her to look down and keep her eyes open. She gave the okay sign.
As they swam a little further, the structure came into sight just as Alexandro’s information had indicated. A large horseshoe-shaped wall, three-feet thick and six-feet tall, spanned more than two-hundred-fifty feet in diameter. Other than that, it was unimpressive—just an old stone wall. Surely, if a team had already been down here, they would have found an orb? Kelly pulled himself along the bottom, sifting through the sand, picking up each stone he came across. He shook his head and looked across at Freya. She seemed to be having similar poor luck, pointlessly rummaging through silt and mud. He swam across to her and pointed in front, indicating his intent to look on ahead. She nodded and watched as he flicked his fins, disappearing into a haze of ocean and sand particles.
Freya returned to her treasure hunt. All she found were rocks and the odd tin or soft drink can. Ugh, it was disgusting. Even the ocean wasn’t safe from humanity. She reached the outer edge of the stone wall and swam along, keeping close to it. Her gloved fingers prodded into each crack and crevice, not that she could feel anything through the thick material. Her mask was beginning to fill with water. She thought about Kelly’s instruction and began the mask clearing procedure.
Pressing the palm of her right hand against the top of her mask so the bottom released a few millimeters from her face, she exhaled hard through her nose, forcing the water out. A stream of bubbles crashed about her head in a white-water curtain. As it cleared, a small metallic glint protruding from beneath one of the huge stone bricks caught her eye. She clawed her way to it, then started digging in the sand. The fine silt clouded up around her, obscuring her view. Using only her limited sense of touch, Freya kept tunneling under the wall. The familiar shape of a box began to form under her fingers. She dug beneath until she could grip the box with both hands. Tugging hard, she released the cuboid object from its hold in the silt. The billow of sand cleared.
She stared at her treasure. It was a small chest, copper-colored with a green oxidized coating on its surface. She smiled. Could this be it? Could there be an orb inside? The excitement power through her. She raised her head to see if Kelly was nearby, but he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. She swam in a circle. The inability to hear or feel anything was unnerving. She only had the power of sight and that was restricted to a straight line in front of her for one hundred fifty feet or so.
The light above her dimmed. Freya frowned and raised her head to investigate. Above her, the huge shadow of a shark glided by. She knew her mask would magnify any object, but still, the thing looked huge. Its blunt snout and thick body looked positively primeval—the perfect predator. Panic set in.
Damn, where was Kelly? Clutching her treasure, Freya lowered her head. She searched for the knife strapped to her right calf. Before she could find it, her gaze was met by the cold stare of reptilian eyes. A sea snake was inches from her face, rippling its body to hold its position. Its eyes were fixed on hers. She froze, holding her breath. Freya shifted her focus from the uncomfortably close predator to the shadow lurking behind it. Oh God. The shark?
It was Kelly. A brief feeling of relief washed over her, but it was snatched away by the searing pain of fangs plunging into her left hand. Freya gargled a scream through her regulator and dropped the box, letting it fall to the sea floor. The snake shot off into murk as Kelly tore through the water toward her. Her breathing slowed and her limbs grew heavy. Her eyelids slid closed. She blinked before her eyes closed one last time.
Giveaway & Review – The Dark Mermaid by Christine L Barr @ninjadustpub @XpressoReads
The Dark Mermaid
Christina L. Barr
Publication date: September 5th 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
MY REVIEW
I like mean, vicious mers, but I also like the ones that fall in love with humans. Here, we have both, and because of the title I am curious where Christina L Barr will take me.
The Bermuda Triangle and Atlantis. Splash…in a dark way.
Her father has six girls, but has chosen her to train as a warrior. She has no idea what his real motivation is. Her father had declared war on all humans. When they attacked the ship and she met her first human, her life was changed forever.
Would her father kill her for saving one?
Her fathers order…kill him before she turned seventeen or he would kill them both.
We meet the Sea Witch, where she learns more about her heritage than she ever learned from her father. And Napa. He is an interesting character, a shapeshifter and I wonder what part he will play.
Halfway in and I’m liking it. I am looking forward to what will become of Luna…Ian, her father, her family, and, of course, the Sea Witch. Will she find true love? Will the mers and humans go to war? What side will Luna be on? Who will she have at her side? So many questions.
The action is amping up. It’s getting exciting and I can’t help but smile at the turn the story takes. It is not like other mermaid stories. A pooling of all the other mer tales I have read, with a dash of something extra on the side.
The battle between dark and light, good and evil…I am very suspicious, untrusting, some would say paranoid. I believe nothing is at it seems, and I am waiting for the lies, the betrayal.
Some parts were lacking detail and I would have liked them fleshed out, developed and drawn out, so I could enjoy them more. They felt a little rushed, glossed over. I wanted  the story to unfold in full detail, slowly, and this would be a WOW. Or maybe it’s just me and I wanted more. (?)
Still, The Dark Mermaid by Christina L Barr is one that stands out from the crowd.
The end…and it does end…was great.
ABOUT THE BOOK
“True love is not a myth. It’s mystic. It’s a force in the universe that draws two people together, resulting in incredible power, for either good or complete chaos.”
On the day Luna proves that she is powerful enough to be her father’s heir, she is banished for saving the life of an enchanting human boy. Her father, the king, gives her two options: kill Ian and regain her honor by the time she comes of age, or be destroyed.
Luna finds shelter in forbidden waters and comes under the protection of her father’s greatest enemy, the Sea Witch. As her ward, Luna becomes a fearsome warrior, but struggles with the fear of turning her powerful magic dark.
With only days remaining before her seventeenth birthday, Luna finds Ian sailing the seas in search of answers. Luna is determined to escape her father’s wrath, and the Sea Witch’s plot of revenge, but dark forces won’t allow her to live a human life without making an impossible sacrifice.
EXCERPT:
True Love
When I returned to the lair, the Sea Witch was much too distracted gutting her catch of shark to care much about my adventures. She had no idea that I had found Ian and kissed him. I wanted to keep it that way. For all she knew, I spent my day with Napa, and I most certainly didn’t fight my sister to the almost death. I made sure to heal my wounds before she saw me.
I hid the pendent, dagger, and lock of hair in a satchel and hoped the Sea Witch wouldn’t be able to sense the magic. I also had to hope that she wouldn’t sense any special magic in me. It was odd that I wasn’t fatigued from my battle. Instead, I felt energized. My magic was leaking out of my body. I tried to keep my movements limited and to remain completely calm.
Unfortunately, somewhere between the chewing of our dinner, the Sea Witch cocked her brow at me in suspicion. “Did Napa bring you a new gift?”
“Why do you ask?”
“I sense new magic.”
I panicked on the inside, but I would not allow that panic to the surface of my thoughts. Of course, she would have been able to sense the pendent. I reached into my satchel and handed it to her without any fuss, and I hoped she didn’t ask any questions about the other item of interest. “Napa didn’t know any better.”
“Interesting.” It only took a moment for the Sea Witch to analyze what it could do. I don’t know why I was so surprised when she disappeared. “This would be more useful on the surface world.” She tossed it back to me and became visible once more. “Quite interesting.”
“Very.” I grinned hard and continued feasting, but I had the sense that she knew I was hiding many details from her. It’s not that I didn’t trust her. I just wanted to make sure she would take the news well, so I didn’t have to worry about her killing everyone outside of our immediate sphere.
It wasn’t easy. I wanted to tell her about Ian’s infatuation with me. It was flattering after my father threw me away. I wanted to tell my mother how his smile enchanted me, and now, I was under his spell. I tried to get him out of my head, so the Sea Witch wouldn’t find out, but while I brushed my hair and stared into the broken mirror Napa gave me, I began to imagine that I was staring at myself from his point of view, and I knew I was truly as beautiful as he made me feel. The thought of never seeing him again was crushing my heart and suffocating my insides. There had to be a way to see him again beyond tricks, smokes, and mirrors.
“Luna, what’s wrong?”
I saw Ian’s face too clearly in my mind. She must have known that I was thinking about him, but that wasn’t so strange. I could still hide the truth for a little while. “Why would something be wrong?”
She floated in front of me with a furrowed and curious brow. “Because you never sing.”
I hadn’t even noticed. I was singing the same song I sang to Ian when I first said goodbye. If he had his hooks in me that deeply, was there truly any escaping him? “You’ll think I’m being a fool.”
The Sea Witch surprised me and held me by my shoulders from behind. “Out of the two of us, I’m the one that made a blood oath with your father. You could be foolish for a thousand lifetimes and not end up as foolish as I once was.”
Perhaps I was being unfair to her. If she were trying to be a real mother, she deserved a chance. As my elder, she might have sound advice to put my mind at ease. “Napa told me that humans believe in true love. I know it sounds childish, but I think I’m experiencing it. I’ve found true love.”
I was so embarrassed that I kept my eyes focused on the teeth of the comb in my hands. I was responsible for ruining Ian’s childhood, and I delayed his life afterward. I didn’t deserve to feel such a consuming joy, especially if Ian were the root cause.
“I’ve heard of true love.” The Sea Witch nicked my chin up with her finger to force her eyes into mine. “The humans teach it like a fairytale, but true love is not a myth; it’s mystic. It’s a force in the universe that draws two people together, resulting in incredible power, for either good or chaos.”
“Chaos?” I laughed. Frankly, it was difficult to believe that there was an actual explanation to how I felt. Napa referred to love as “irrational logic”. I wasn’t sure if having a legitimate reason was worse or better. “How can what I feel ever lead to destruction?”
“I’m not saying that it will, but true love is a dangerous magic.” The Sea Witch got uncomfortably close to my face. I tried to back away, but she swam around to observe me fully. Nothing about me had changed physically, but I’m sure she wasn’t seeing with her natural eye. “I can sense it on you. Your magic is stronger.”
I thought of how quickly I defeated my sister, but then, I quickly pushed that out of my mind. “How is that possible? Is it just because I have feelings for Ian?”
“No. That would be ridiculous, but it is possible that you’re drawn to each other for a reason.” She, once again, became agonizingly uncomfortable. I didn’t back away or cower from her glaring and curious eyes. I tried to be firm while I blanketed my mind with thoughts of training battles, meditation, and the past few lonely years of my life. I would not think of Ian, and I certainly wouldn’t think of the kisses we shared!
Except, I completely did.
I don’t know if my sudden memory of Ian’s kiss was vivid enough to burrow into her brain, but she certainly seemed more suspicious after I indulged in it. “You must have seen him again!” I covered my face. I would have hidden in my clam, but she was already inside of it with me. She grew impatient and pulled my hands away from my flustered face. “I did. Napa found Ian, and I went to see him. He gave me the dagger I had been searching for, and we spoke.”
“That’s not the only thing you did.”
I straightened out my body and tried to look a little taller and mature than I had been acting a moment ago. “We did share a kiss, yes.”
Instead of lecturing me, she twirled around the cavern, shrieking in delight. I hadn’t seen her genuinely happy or excited over anything, so I was a little terrified. “Did he have magic?”
“He didn’t seem to have knowledge of having magic.” “Perhaps he’s an amplifier,” she suggested with much intrigue. “What do you mean?”
“They are extremely rare, but an amplifier can increase your magic, even without being able to use it.” She swam to me and clasped onto both my hands and smiled. “If you were to mate, you could create new magic for your offspring and leave your own power intact. If that’s true, you should definitely mate him.”
“Uh…” My mouth opened in shock. The desire to feel and be more of an adult was ripped away from me. “I’m not ready for this conversation.”
“Why? Do you love him?” “It’s preposterous that I love him!” “But you do!” She chuckled. “I see it in your eyes. I feel it through your magic. He’s made you more powerful. If Fate is pulling you to love this man, don’t push back. There’s no sense in fighting what will be.”
Was it truly possible that Ian made me feel stronger? Was he the reason why I could use my magic to fight my sister so effortlessly? Even if it were true, what did it matter? I only wanted to control my magic so it wouldn’t accidentally go dark. I had no desire to be the greatest sorcerous in the world.
It was silly to think that I could take human form and live with Ian. I hardly knew him. But, for some reason, the thought of leaving to discover the world with him began to fill my chest and gut with a ticklish light that turned into a glorious rumbling. I clutched onto my chest as I felt it vibrating. My entire body was radiating heat. I tried to convince myself that I was merely embarrassed, but my hands were tingling.
“The thought of escaping with that human is causing your magic to burst from you,” the Sea Witch said. “You can’t deny what you want or may very well need.”
Welcome to Sunset in Old Savannah by Mary Ellis #MaryEllis
Sunset in Old Savannah by Mary Ellis is the fourth book in the Secrets of the South Mystery series.
I have been with the characters from the beginning, and it is good to be back.
All I need to do is look at the cover and I am there.
Sunset in Old Savannah (Secrets of the South Mysteries #4)Amazon US  /  Amazon UK  /  Amazon CA  /  Goodreads
MY REVIEW
A convoluted mystery with lots of suspects that kept me guessing.
It’s so nice to be back with familiar faces and off on another adventure with the team. This series can stand alone but to really get to know the main characters and all the supporting ones best, this light, fun, sorta cozy type of read is well worth reading from the beginning.
I start with a smile on my face at the fun writing about Beth.
She’s quite the character. She is my favorite. I love her brash, snarky, sarcastic wit that puts poor Mike, who’s madly in love with her, through the wringer. She manages to find herself in uncomfortable situations, and she’s looking for a reason to get out of town..
I can’t help but laugh at Beth’s antics…even as she puts her life in danger to get to the bottom the mystery.
Old friends, new friends, a mystery solved and another mystery on the horizon. From Natchez and Pensacola, to Savannah, Beth always gets her man.
