He would have his Revenge – Shadow of Vengeance by Kristine Mason with Kobo Giveaway

Shadow of Vengeance by Kristine Mason
.
This is the third book of The CORE Shadow Trilogy.

Each book is about a different couple connected to The Core (Criminal Observance Resolution Evidence).

They can stand alone, but the other characters do often make an appearance in each book.

Shadow of Danger – Eden and Hudson   *   Shadow of Perception – Celeste and John.

And last, but most assuredly not least, Shadow of Vengeance –  Rachel and Owen.

Rachel saw the call was coming from Sean’s phone. She had a feeling something might be wrong.

Sherriff Jake Tyler told her Sean, her brother, had been beaten and was at the Dixon Medical Center.

She had no idea of the mystery surrounding hazing at Wexman University.

Until she heard about Josh.

Welcome to hell week. You have seven days to find him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shadow of Vengeance reads like a Criminal Minds TV episode. Revenge can be a powerful motivator and HE is driven to have his. The crimes are brutal and vicious.
Revenge is an ice-cold mistress.
Niagara Falls in Winter by Sherry Fundin
Niagara Falls in Winter by Sherry Fundin
Shadow of Vengeance is also a romance story. The sexual innuendo is so hot, it could be a Castle TV episode. Will they end up together? What do you think?
Once I open the pages and begin reading one of Kristine Mason’s books, I find them almost impossible to put down.
I love how she builds plots within plots, messing up my plans to figure out what will happen by throwing in a twist here and there. I race through the pages, desperate to find out what is going to happen. I tell myself to slow down or I will run out of book, but I cannot stop.
I met Lois and her friend and my heart broke for them.
Kristine writes about Owen thinking about Jake and Rachel. I couldn’t help but laugh. Poor Owen. LOL Still can’t help but laugh. Sometimes we don’t see what is right in front of us.
At first I thought that Kristine was repeating their lovey dovey stuff too often. THEN, I thought about my own experiences. Isn’t that what real love is about? You cannot quit thinking about the one you love, even over a dead body, The thought of gently caressing…..well, you know where that’s going.
The personal problems Rachel and Owen encounter while working together shows how difficult life can be when you shit where you work.
Kristine’s ability to write a fantastic novel never ceases to amaze me. Her plots read like a Criminal Minds episode – realistic, tragic and terrifying events. I have no doubt that Kristine will produce another masterpiece that I will be dying to pick up.
Along with that feeling, comes the letdown. Will there be more from The Core? I want to read more Shadow’s – ?, or ?, or whatever. Well, Kristine. What is next?
Love this:    “Sometimes life’s a bitch, which is why I tend to be one.”
“This is Wolverine territory. Bill’s the only fool I know that likes those damned Buckeyes.”
Go Blue.
Shadow of Vengeance takes place in Michigan and that is Wolverine country. I am BLUE.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
shadowofperceptionauthorI didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good had come from writing it. I realized my passion, and had found a career that I love.
When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.
Freakin Friday #15-If this doesn’t Freak you out,I don’t know what will-The Blight by Rachel E Fisher
Freakin Friday!
Freakin Fridays is a meme brought to you by fuonlyknew. We will be posting about books, movies, and all things scary.
Feel free to join in and do your own Freakin Fridays posts!
Tune in every Friday. Get your scare on!
Let’s have some fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Blight is the original backstory of Eden’s Root  and is always FREE. I believe, if you grab this book, you will feel you have to read the rest.

I look at the beautiful cover for The Blight and I think it signifies the beginning, but really it is the ending of the world as we know it.

Add Shudder to Goodreads

I have read and reviewed Eden’s Root (Book I) and Seeds of War (Book II) and I can hardly wait to read Emergence (Book III) of the trilogy. Rachel E Fisher has won me over as a fan for LIFE. To see my reviews, scroll to the end of the post. To get The Blight, click on the cover.

These books are so realistic that it reinforces my fear of what is going on today with our food supply.

Are you afraid? Maybe you should be. I have questioned scientists use of growth hormones in our meat and genetically modifing grains to make food resistant and grow quicker. It frightens me and pisses me off at the same time. What gives them the right to play God? Read on, but take a deep breath, let it out slow and buckle your seatbelt, because it’s going to be a very bumpy ride.

All the covers are beautiful and the titles hint at what is to come.

This review is very difficult for me to write. I do not want to spoil anything for you. I think these books, even though they are fiction, should be a warning.

 “Not everybody associated with a bad thing is a bad person.”

But where do you draw the line? What if you knew what you were doing was dangerous, would you still continue to do the work?  Would you blow the whistle?

Scientists mantra – discover, discuss, debate, but never conclude. Does that give them the right to play God and not accept blame for the result if it is bad? They sure want the praise when it is good. But, no, it’s not their fault. They only did the work, others made the decisions of what to do with it.

Only the Chosen would know the specifics. Only the Chosen would be protected. But the Chosen would need resources – people, information, supplies…. Resources would need to be saved and protected, hidden for safety. They would need this to rebuild a new world.

My heart bleeds for so many of the characters. The decisions they have to make are, not only soul sucking, but leave millions to die and the rest to fend for themselves.

Louis – outspoken. Felt they had already crossed the threshold of no return. He spoke the Truth and many did not want to hear it.

I loved when Rachel talked about Louis’s green children – he carried pictures of his houseplants, greenhouse and outdoor garden. I couldn’t help but laugh. I know people consider their pets their children, but plants? LOL

Fi – a redheaded Boticelli.

2030 Heirloom – scientific definition – strains of plants and animal that predate WWII, a hundred years or older, before genetic modification and hybrids.

Politicians – they undermine the good in the name of the powerful. I feel the government uses subterfuge to distract us from what is really going on.

Mike – Fi’s father. Mike knew that Fi, his daughter, would love learning about the project to plan for an outer space colony.

Stan is the money man behind Eden, seed capital.

Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos   5 STARS – Would Buy It For Them (lol)

Even when you know the right thing to do, sometimes it is not possible to do it.

Blight is always FREE on Amazon.

Quotes

There are so many quotes in the book I want to use, that my review would be all quotes if I didn’t figure out how to do it differently. lol

“We now have dominion over Nature.” That one is going to bite them in the ass.

  “But?”

Darryl “…some evidence that this sequence can also cause plants senesce well before flowering…….transferred to several wild species of grasses….”

Senesce – to die before producing seeds. Speed up development but it will  also speed up aging.

“This is about the moral duty of the innovator.” “….we will pay for playing God.”

“….politics trump science…”

“Are you girls online shopping in preparation for going real shopping?’ LOL

Darryl – “I’m the architect of the disaster.”

“I guess the time is here.”

“…the shit has officially hit the fan.”

“There is only so much room on the Ark…”

A Guest Post from Kelan

 THE RIDE OF SUSPENDED DISBELIEF

 Writing Urban Fantasy Adventure is a bit like creating a wild new theme park ride. It’s a really fun gig. If done right, readers will happily board your attraction and stay engaged through the whole crazy ride, ping-ponging between anticipation, fear, laughter, and satisfaction.

 As a novelist, I have to make sure my story has all the necessary elements required for a great ride, and suspended disbelief is a key element in good fantasy fiction.

In Urban Fantasy, fantastical things happen in the modern world as we know it. Undoubtedly, the biggest challenge of writing for this genre is creating a sense of isolation in our modern world. Considering the sheer number of humans crawling all over the planet armed with multiple means of connecting, this can be a formidable task. Enter the all-important selection of location.

The setting for Delta Legend goes by both the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the California Delta. I refer to it by both names in the book. Though surrounded by populated cities, the heart of the Delta retains a sense of isolation due to its vast expanses of farmland and seemingly endless waterways that snake on for 1000 plus miles. That’s right—one thousand.

A picture of California's Sacramento-San Joaqu...

A picture of California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, with Suisun Bay at left-center and the Carquinez Strait at far left (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

It was definitely challenging to describe this unique region in a way that would give people who’ve never been there a visceral sense of the place. Luckily, I have a couple things going for me in this regard. One, I have a background as a screenwriter, so I write visually. And two, I spent a good deal of time in the California Delta from the time I was 15 until I was in my mid 30’s. And let me tell you, no matter how old I got, swimming or waiting to get picked up on a water ski in the Delta, always freaked me out a bit. Anything could be lurking in those deep murky waters.

 Of course, if anything like what happens in the book were to actually happen in the Delta, it would be extremely hard to keep it on the down-low, but that’s where the all-important suspended disbelief and sense of isolation come into play.

When 16-year-old Oakland teenager, Calvin Pierce, makes a bad decision and winds up getting arrested, his mother is quick to take action. Determined not to lose a second son to the drug and gang violence of the inner city, she sends Calvin to spend the summer working for his great uncle in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

There in the predominately white region of agriculture and recreational boating, Calvin’s a fish out of water with a chip on his shoulder. But when severed body parts are discovered floating in a slough, his summer of proving himself takes on new meaning.

Something deadly is lurking in the deep, murky waterways of the Delta. Now the daunting task of containing the living incarnation of a mythical creature falls to Calvin and his ragtag posse of oddball characters.

My Delta Legend Review

To see my full review, go HERE.

I won this book in a Giveaway on fuonlyknew’s blog. Thank you Kelan and Laura for the giveaway.

When I first picked this book up all I saw was a monster in the water, super, right up my alley. I love these stories. As I read along, it became apparent it was much more than that. Kelan did a great job with the small town descriptions and details of the people lives that brings them together to save their town and themselves, detailing their acts of heroism, growth and change, bringing out the best in people.

Something in the water. Awesome – I could hardly wait to begin reading. Is it bigger than Jaws? You’ll have to read it to find out.

I love creature stories, so it’s easy for me to rate this one very high. The cover was over the top. Simple, yet complex, as you delve into the eye trying to see what’s there. The cover and title related well to the book, it’s important to me that they do.

I really got a feel for the small town setting, where the cafe was the focal point and you could hear all the latest gossip. The cops even hung out there. I used to visit a small southern town in Mississippi, and their local hangout was a gas station, where everyone would meet, drink colas and play checkers. Very ……….quaint? Does your town have a local hangout?

The characters were well developed and realistic. I could picture them in my mind and relate to them easily. Some of the characters were hateful and disgusting, others so much like your next door neighbor, just living their lives. When Kelan described Huestes as a Weeble, I busted out laughing . It brought back memories of buying them for my son when he was young. Can’t you just picture Huestes? “Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down.”

Kelan laid a good base in the first half to crank it out in the second half.The suspense kept building and I kept waiting for the creature to appear. Every time someone went near the water, I was waiting for the monster to get them. Just like Jaws. Don’t go in the water. How many times do you have to be told, don’t go in the water. LOL!

The Lochness Monster, Bigfoot, Aliens……would you believe someone’s story, or would you have to see for yourself?

There were two surprises at the end. One I saw coming and I figured Kelan threw that one in to distract me from the other one, which I didn’t see coming. I am a voracious reader, so when the author throws in a surprise or two, it makes my day. Keeps me on my toes.

Even though there is a Book II, this tied things up nicely, while leaving it open enough to continue the story. I can hardly wait to find out what happens next, so I hope you are busy writing, Kelan.

The history leading to the legend was well-developed and detailed, going in to depth about Chinese history in relation to building the Transcontinental Railroad and the Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta.

I can absolutely see this as a movie. As I was reading along, the scenes played out in my mind as the story unfolded. I saw the ending as if I was watching it on the big screen.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kelan O'ConnellAs a young adult, Kelan O’Connell spent her summers aboard a family houseboat in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Apparently, she still harbors suspicions about those deep murky waters. Though she’s been writing in one form or another since the age of 20, Delta Legend is her debut Young Adult Crossover novel.

Kelan began writing in college, creating character monologues as a way to stand out in auditions while also cranking out sketch comedy. She holds a degree in Theatre Arts from San Francisco State University and has worked in the Entertainment Industry in Northern California and Los Angeles, among her many other day jobs.

She currently lives in Northern California with her partner, Sound Engineer/Producer Tom Size, and the incredibly spoiled pets of Camp Runamuck.

Freakin Friday #14 – Spooky Short Stories by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Spooky Short Stories by Katherine Meyer Griffith
.
The cover alone would have me picking up this book. I love trees, especially ones that have my spine tingling and goosebumps rising on my arms.
.
 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg
.
I have read several books by Kathryn Meyer Griffith, so there was no question about reading these short stories and sharing them with you. There are four of them and each has its own special problem. So, let’s visit the supernatural world of ghosts, witches, banshees and werewolves.
.
Ghost Brother (approx. 6600 words)
.
I came to, sitting on top of a grave. I hope it isn’t mine. LOL Of course, it is. I saw that one coming, but loved it anyway. I knew most of what would happen, but there was a twist and a turn to keep me on my toes. He couldn’t remember how he died. He does find out and “lives” to regret it. I love ghost stories and this is full of anguish and misery. Perfect for a ghost. Lots of action. An interesting and fun read. Excellent ending.
.
******
.
Running With The Train ( a werewolf short story of 5650 words)
.

Sarah was looking out the window of the train and saw something – something running faster than the train. It looked like wolves, but there are no wolves at the Grand Canyon. Right? She had felt a tug, an urge to jump off the train and run through the woods with the creatures. Yeah, that’s what I’m looking for. A wolfish man to love me forever. Maybe she’ll find it. When Kathryn mentioned the urge, the feeling of being drawn towards something, it made me think of Close Encounters.

******

The Banshee and The Witch (a magical romantic story, approx 9550 words:

Cleona was over four hundred years old. Maybe you figured it out. She is a supernatural being, a witch. For three nights in a row, she’d woken from a dream, feeling an impending doom close around her. She had worked her magic, creating a spell to keep her young, but it was no longer working. I haven’t read much about banshees, but have seen them on Charmed, a TV program of the supernatural kind. Evil or not, I’m liking the banshees. Great story showing what some will do for the chance at another life, another love. What would you trade?

******

Too Close To The Edge (a ghostly story of 5600 words)

OMG. This was the scariest of all. My favorite of the four short stories.

I have stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon and looked down, down, down. Kathryn does a great job of describing the terror of someone who is afraid of heights and the thoughts that go through their mind. The aura of the past seems to haunt the area, so who knows what ghosts roam the Grand Canyon.

“No, Jeff, I can’t. I can’t come any closer.”

I can picture her, cowering far away from the edge, trying not to let other sightseers discover her terror. I am afraid of flying and heights. I remember Mr. Wonderful, my hubby, taking me to the top of the Stratosphere in Vegas,the Towers in Toronto and Niagara Falls, and Chichen Itza. Now that one, I couldn’t hide my terror from others. I would be trying to melt into the wall, so afraid I couldn’t pick up my camera to shoot. Due to Mr. Wonderful’s persistence, I have experienced things I never would have done on my own and have brought my fears down to a manageable level, for the most part. How about you? What is your greatest fear?

******

I am rating this fantastic selection of Spooky Short Stories by Kathryn Meyer Griffith as a whole. I loved them all and found myself sitting on the grave, running through the woods, stirring the cauldron and hanging on for dear life with each and every character.

The cover is awesome. I love trees and the lady running through the mist tells me that what is between the covers may be hard to believe. But we know – there are ghosts and ghouls, demons and monsters. So before you sit down to read, turn the lights on high and lock the doors. Every noise is going to have you looking over your shoulder, peering into the corners and wishing you had heavier drapes hanging on your windows.

 Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos  4 STARS – Would Highly Recommend To Others

I received the ebook from Kathryn Meyer Griffith in return for an honest and unbiased review of Spooky Short Stories. It is my pleasure, Kathryn. I will soon be reading another of your wonderful books. Hmmmm, which one will it be?

My Review of Where’s Lolly by Stephen Henning
.
I am so happy to see that Stephen Henning has written a book for the villainess. It is unusual that I become so enamored by a “bad guy”, but Lolly has my full attention. I can’t help but feel some empathy for her in this novella. With her background, it is not surprising that she turned out the way she did, but she is a human being. There is a heart, though it seems to be buried pretty deep. Can anyone reach her, make a connection?
.
She is on the run, with only one person to turn to. But, can he, will he be able to help her?
.
I was walking through the words, strolling along. Before I knew it, I was racing through the pages, so curious to see the outcome. Images flashed through my mind – Lolly holding the man by the heels, threatening to drop him off the roof – scaling walls and creating fire with her super powers.
.
I love it! Stephen Henning had my attention from the beginning to the end. Lots of action and emotion in such a few pages. I think this novella will entice you to read further and discover the adventures of the superheroes, James and Sam. Maybe you will even develop some empathy for Lolly, as I did. After all, she is only an unhappy teenager with superpowers. How bad can it be?

He’s not exactly their biggest fan since Erin dated one in high school.

Juggling nosy roommates, a first date with a gorgeous guy from college and a brother on a Van Helsing kick is enough to keep any nineteen year old girl busy – And then Erin’s old flame walks back into her life.

My review of Beneath Manhattan Skies by Emma Meade

Emma Mead’s books have interesting and pretty covers. Beneath Manhattan Skies is no exception. The words of the story flow smoothly across the pages, making Erin’s world believable, if you believe in vampires, that is. So, let’s go into the city and see what is happening.

Looking through Erin’s eyes, we see the world as a teenager, going through the angst of roommates and forbidden love during her college years. But, how many people can say they were jilted by a vampire? And what happens when he shows up again?

 I knew James, her vampire ex-boyfriend, would enter her world again, even as she struggled to move on from their break-up. Do you remember all those hormonal teenage uncertainties and insecurities?

Emma Meade’s descriptions of the characters make them come to life. Sadie is everything you could ever want in a best friend. Loyal, giving and accepting of Erin, vampires and all. The cast of characters stand by her and put their lives on the line to solve the mystery of the killer vampire and end his run of terror.

With plenty of mystery and the paranormal, I enjoyed this novella. I would highly recommend Beneath Manhattan Skies to all the Young Adult paranormal lovers out there.

I received this book from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review. Thank you Emma and I look forward to traveling through many more fantasy worlds with you.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

EmmaEmma Meade writes paranormal fiction. She lives in rainy Ireland and loves all things supernatural. Stephen King’s The Stand is one of her most loved books and she’s lost count of the number of times she’s read L.J. Smith’s trilogy, The Forbidden Game.

Books, DVDS & TV show boxsets take up lots of space in her home and she collects all the Point Horror books she can get her hands on.

She is not ashamed to admit that Dirty Dancing and Twilight make her top ten movie list but wishes to point out that The Last of the Mohicans, Reality Bites, Dead Poets Society, Stand by Me and The Goonies are in there too.

Writing supernatural stories & watching marathon re-runs of Buffy are some of her favourite ways of escaping reality.

Superheroes & Ghosts – What Happened In Witches Wood by Stephen Henning

What Happened in Witches Wood takes you on another adventure with the superheroes, James and Sam, as they strive to keep their superpowers secret and out of the hands of the evil and greedy Sir Rosewood.

To read my Mini review of A Class Apart, Book I of the Class Heroes series, go HERE.

.

Simon took Asha to Witches Wood to scare her.

They sat on a bench by the river.

They noticed the bench was dedicated to Katherine Bethany Blake, who drowned in the river in 1987.

Simon thought everything was going great, a little kissing, a little touching. Then Asha screamed.

A girl stepped towards them, dripping water from her clothes and hair, covered in blood.

In a blink, she was gone.

.

This fictional news report relates to Class Heroes book II, What Happened in Witches Wood. Class Heroes is a series of thriller books for teenagers and adults.

***Spoiler Alert***  I do not believe there is anything here that will spoil A Class Apart, Book I of the Class Heroes series, so feel free to read on.

The cover speaks to me, a girl in the woods. Simple, yet lends an aura of mystery.

This is the second book of the Class Heroes series . They tell the story of teenage superheroes, James and Sam, and the people that want what they have and what they would do to get it.

I liked that Stephen had more than one storyline going. James and Sam would have their trials and tribulations with G-Netik and Lolly. But what about Katherine? Who is she and why does Sam feel the need to solve the mystery?

James and Sam’s parents had told them to never go into the woods. Do you think they would be able to resist? Tell a teenager not to do something and it usually creates more curiosity and sometimes a desire more urgent than was there before.

Sir Rosewood is a respected businessman who is used to getting whatever he wants. His daughter, Lolly has learned all his evil lessons. The corruption in the upper echelons has allowed him so much leeway in his abuse of power that no one has foreseen how far he will go. He thought he had the right to do whatever it takes to get what he wants.

As the people gather to party in the woods while looking for ghosts, it made me think of the Squatchers. If you have never see this Discovery show, check it out and prepare to laugh your way through the woods with the squatching crew as they hunt for Bigfoot.

Stephen describes Sam running. She wasn’t supposed to be doing it, because it cannot be explained. His description made me think of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman. I can hear the theme music playing now. I love it when I can relate the story to a movie or TV show, making it easier to visualize the scene, as if it is a mini movie playing through my mind.

Sometimes Book II in a series can fall a little short and I felt What Happened in Witches Wood did not let me down. Action packed, multiple storylines, characters I’m loving and hating and I am unable to put the book down. What more can I ask for?

Where’s Lolly? This villainess is still on the loose and I aim to hunt her down.

I love this series and am so happy to know that Lolly has her own story coming up next. It will be free on Amazon on January 15, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 16.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

 Stephen HenningI began writing the first Class Heroes book on my laptop in February 2011, but these stories have probably been continually playing in my head since I was aged five or six, when I would act them out with toys and with my friends. I then branched out into using pencils, colouring pens and paper, moving on to writing pads and then my first computer.

So, as you’ve probably gathered, I have always enjoyed making up stories and the super-hero genre has been one of my favourites.

The CV-type stuff is that I went to Sheffield Hallam University to study English. I then trained and briefly worked as a journalist in Salford. After that, I moved into publishing – which was great. An interesting and fun industry to be in and fascinating to see how books are put together and sold.

After that I started doing technical writing, which led me to start my own business with my friend and colleague Andrew Butters. My love of writing, generally, led me back to writing fiction. Our company, Elucidox Ltd, publishes the Class Heroes books.

If you want to know a bit more about me, what kind of super powers I have and the kind of super villains I have to tangle with on a daily basis, then feel free to watch Rage. This is a short film, that took a long time to make. It’s a simple day in my life :-). Actually it’s just a fun movie that I made with the very kind help of some of my best mates. We had a laugh doing it, hope you like it too. And if you do, then why not explore the super world of the Class Heroes books?

Monday Mini #7 – A Class Apart by Stephen Henning

A Class Apart, by Stephen Henning is the first book in the Class Heroes series of thrillers for teenagers and adults alike. I will be spotlighting this series this week, so be sure and check back to see what’s happening with the superhero teenagers, James and Sam.

I read this book quite a while ago, before I started blogging. I am sharing a mini review now, because I be will publishing my review for the second book of the Class Heroes series, What Happened in Witches Wood tomorrow. You can see it HERE. No spoilers.

Where’s Lolly, the third book in the Class Heroes series is being released and will be free on Amazon on January 15, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 16. (Follow the links below to check it out on Goodreads or click on the covers for Amazon.)

All I can say is WOW! I was blown away. I read it straight through, it took me six hours. I devoured it. The cover was interesting and caught my eye. I really liked the clean, crisp, simplistic look. The cover and the title were both descriptive of the book. It was very well written and the story flowed smoothly. The suspense built from the beginning and continued to the last page. A lot of times, the books by authors from the UK can be difficult to read and the flow can be interrupted by the phraseology. Definitely not so here. The characters were both likeable and hateable. I loved Samantha for her goodness and naivety. I loved James for all his heroism and willingness to risk his own life, but he left me wondering what he would become in the future. I even felt empathy and sadness for the “villain”. I can hardly wait until I can get my hands on the next book. A Class Apart would make an interesting movie that would be enjoyed by people of all ages, just like the book. I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Interview, Review and Giveaway for Award Winning Novelist Bette Lee Crosby’s Jubilee’s Journey

BlogBanner_copyTo follow the tour, go HERE.

I am so happy to be sharing a new novel, Jubilee’s Journey, from the award winning novelist, Bette Lee Crosby.

Bette Lee is as warm and charming as her characters. Maybe that is why her characters are so realistic, as are their stories. Read the interview below to find out for yourself.

Spare Change was the first book of Bette Lee’s that I read and it is still my favorite. To see my review, go HERE. I have been an avid fan of hers ever since.

Be sure and check out my review of Jubilee’s Journey and Bette Lee Crosby’s two great giveaways below.

BOOK BLURB FROM GOODREADS

When tragedy strikes a West Virginia coal mining family, two children start out on a trek that they hope will lead them to a new life. Before a day passes, the children are separated and the boy is caught up in a robbery not of his making. If his sister can find him, she may be able to save him. The problem is she’s only seven years old, and who’s going to believe a kid?

Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series. This story of discovering lost family and finding love reconnects readers with Ethan Allen and the other heart-warming characters of the bestselling novel SPARE CHANGE.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTERVIEW WITH BETTE LEE CROSBY
I am so happy to have you here today Bette. I believe your interview will give my readers an idea of how you are able to come up with such wonderful and interesting characters and stories for your books.
1. Who or what inspired you to become an author?
My mother, born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia, was not a writer, but, she was a wonderful storyteller. Not realizing that at heart I was my mother’s daughter, I studied art intent upon becoming a graphic designer. My first job was that of a packaging designer, but it was a short-lived career. Faced with an immediate deadline and a blank space where the copy should have been, I began to write. I never looked back, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that my love for words far outweighed any design skills I acquired along the way.
2. Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series, but wasn’t Book One, Spare Change, written as a stand-alone novel?
Yes it was. Actually all of my books are stand-alone novels, but after Spare Change was published, I discovered that both I and my readers were not ready to leave Wyattsville and the people living there. That’s when I turned it into an ongoing series. Like many writers, I tend to favor the books that reflect the most poignant aspects of their life. For me, it’s my Southern heritage.
3. Will there be more books in The Wyattsville Series?
Although I do not have one currently planned, I’m sure there will be. Once you get involved with characters you are fond of, it’s hard to let them leave your life forever. I find that I think of characters like Olivia Doyle, Ethan Allen, Paul and Jubilee as friends. I might not get back together with them for six or eight months, but I always know they are there…waiting for me and ready to start off on a new adventure.
4. You’ve written six novels, in those books, which character is your favorite and why?
I suppose I’d have to say Ethan Allen of Spare Change and the reason why is because he is the type of kid I imagine my mom being when she was his age. She came from a family of eleven siblings and they were what many of us would consider poor; so she had to be resilient and determined to survive. And although she wasn’t one to toss around obscenities indiscriminately, she could cuss up a storm when she was really mad. When Mama started cussing we knew to step aside and mind our manners.
 5.  Is Ethan Allen is modeled after your mom, is there a character that you’d modeled after yourself?
There is probably a bit of me in every character, but the one most like me would probably be Olivia Doyle in both Spare Change and Jubilee’s Journey. Like Olivia, I have quirky ideas about life, I am an eternal optimist and regardless of the odds, I will always go down swinging. When life takes a turn for the worse, that’s when you need to be strong, draw on your Faith and cling to the love of those around you…which is pretty much what Olivia does.
5. What is your next book project?
I am currently working on a novel titled “Previously Loved Treasures.” Although it is not a sequel, it does dovetail into the mystery that ended “The Twelfth Child.” One of the protagonists in this book is a delightful man of magical talents called Peter Pennington and much of the story centers around a very special second-hand store. I believe this book is scheduled for release in April or May of 2014.
6. What is your favorite quote?
It probably depends upon when and where you ask me. I would love to be deep and profound like so many brilliant writers, but I’ve learned over the years that I am still my mother’s daughter – sometimes irreverent, always a story-lover, but seldom brilliant. So here is the quote that most closely reflects my own thinking…”The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues.” Elizabeth Taylor
7. What advice would you give to an aspiring author?
 Be yourself. Discover what’s in your heart and create characters you love or love to hate. Never allow yourself to follow in the tracks of another author simply because he or she sold a million copies of their book. If you stumble on that pathway, your readers will know; your characters will sound shallow and superficial. But if you’re true to yourself and work to develop your own voice it will ring loud and true with believability. It isn’t something that happens overnight. I wrote four novels before the fifth was published, but the truth is that the first four didn’t deserve to be published, they were all part of my learning curve. So, stay with it and learn from the writers who inspire you, from the books you love, and from the books you hate. You learn something from every book you read, and sometimes that something is what not to do.  Most of all enjoy every minute you spend writing—because if you’re not writing for fun, you shouldn’t be writing.
MY REVIEW OF JUBILEE’S JOURNEY
“We’ll name her Jubilee, because this child is a celebration of our love.”
Thus, Jubilee’s story began and you will not want to miss it.
~~~~~~

Jubilee’s Journey is the sequel to Spare Change. Spare Change was the first book of Bette Lee’s that I read and it is still my favorite. I have been an avid fan of hers ever since.

The southern charm and giving nature of the characters captivate me. It makes me think of Hillary Clinton’s book, It Takes A Village. This book drives home the point that a community can accomplish so much more than a single individual. We can definitely learn some lessons from the loving and giving characters in Bette Lee’s novels.

I love her covers and this one speaks to me as strongly as all the others. They are some of the most touching and emotional covers in their simplicity. The cover design for Jubilee’s Journey was done by Kathleen Valentine of valentinedesign.com. Bette Lee will also occasionally incorporate a friend or fan’s name into her novels.

Living in coal country is never easy, but for Paul and Jubilee it became impossible.

Their mother died and my tears began. Paul did his best to be there for Jubilee – he never returned to school, so he did all he could think of to make Jubilee’s life better  and took care of the house. After his father’s death, they were evicted from the only home they had ever known. How would Paul keep his promise to his mother to take care of Jubilee and his promise to his father to never work in the mine?

He knew of an aunt in Wyattsville, Virginia. He only had a name, Anita, but off they went.

Into the clouds - (c) Sherry J Fundin

Into the clouds – (c) Sherry J Fundin

Hurt McAdams dad had abused him and raised him with fear. As a defense, he took the offensive line and became a bully, then a murderer. He ended up in Wyattsville on his search to find his father and make him pay for his miserable life.

Oh no, Paul is in the store looking for work and here comes Hurt. I am very fearful, my heart is heavy with dread. I knew it. Bette!!!! But, what’s this? Who should arrive but Ethan Allen and I breathe a sigh of relief. No way will he allow anything bad to happen to Jubilee.

“Grandma Olivia’s nice. She helps kids in trouble.”

That being said, I knew things would be okay. Somehow.

Bette Lee Crosby writes stories as if they are biographies. They are full of the cruelties and unfairness of life, but also the beauty and wonder. The worlds and dialogue are so real, I feel as if I am there and I feel frustrated because I do not know what to do to help. She packs so much life and realism into her novels, sometimes a BOX of tissues is not enough. I laugh and cry with the characters. I go through their highs and lows, their ups and downs, all the while trying to figure out how Bette is going to make this end with a happy ever after.

The ending left me begging for more. I was sitting on the edge of my seat as if my happiness was on the line.

Blog Tour,Review & Giveaway for Dark Cravings by Madeline Pryce

I am very pleased to be a part of Madeline Pryce’s blog tour for Dark Cravings.

I read the book when it came out as Blood Lust Rising. I had a review ready, but never published it. Madelyne had seemed to drop from sight, but I found out why. She was doing the author thing, you know, finding a publisher and such. lol

Warning: This novel is rated for Adults only.

I rarely do erotic, but this book was recommended to me by Laura, my sister, at fuonlyknew. I always pay attention to her recommendations. She could not quit talking about the first chapter. “Whew”, I say, as I blush head to toe. But Laura was right. Not only was my Kindle smoking, it was burning up! For all you erotic lovers, this is a MUST Read!

The sex, when it’s not leaving them on the verge of death, is earth shattering and for the first time in ages Ella is connected with someone on a level she’d feared lost forever. My Review of Dark Cravings by Madeline Pryce

I read this book when it was Blood Lust Rising. I have reread the new and improved Dark Cravings and I must tell you, I could not put it down. That is, until the battery in my Kindle died.

~~~
Hot cover and very appropriate title.
Dark Cravings is Ella’s story. The detail and depth of Madeline Pryce’s descriptions is amazing. It is easy to visualize the battles, Ella and Micah’s attraction to each other, the characters that surround them and the world they inhabit.
Ella Gray – I am neither human nor vampire, the thing I was raised to kill. Some consider me a demon, an undesirable, an abomination. I am a hunter and I love every minute of it. I work for the Shadow Agency  My mission is to protect humans from rogue vampires and keep our existence a secret.
The vampire world has its own set of rules and regulations with appropriate penalties for those that run afoul of the Shadow Agency.
Micah is the son of the agency’s leader. Ella and Micah had an attraction they fought, but could never put aside. I thought they were already fated to be together before the succubus came into their lives.
By her and Micah being together, Ella had changed. They had changed. The gates of Hell were opened, spawning demons, and the earth protested with hurricanes and tornadoes. Who knew what else would be affected by their lust and desire.
Their journey through their destinies are treacherous. Betrayal follows them everywhere they go. The gruesome, graphic horror is peppered with humor and laughter.
Madelyne describes Ella getting dressed to go to the club and I couldn’t help but laugh at her thoughts about the choice of clothing Hannah, her sister, had chosen for her.
Either the top was too small or my tits had gone from a B cup to a C. Jesus, if I bent over, my nipples might pop out.
I was so involved with the story, the hours passed as if they were minutes. I felt a huge letdown when I reached the last page, wanting the story to continue. And it will. So, you will want to follow Madeline Pryce to see what she has in store for Ella, Micah and the cast of characters you will either love or hate in Dark Cravings.
Animated Animals. Pictures, Images and Photos   5 STARS – Would Buy It For Them
QUOTES
“The Vampire Queen and yes…the Demon Son. Destruction and Mayhem.”
“God, you’re a bitch. The way he said it, I heard goddess.”
“I crossed my arms under my breasts, which is a mistake, because they almost fell out.”
“When the hell did you get so possessive? Why don’t you just pee on me and get it over with.”
“Nothing says heartless like matching coffee mugs that read, ‘Stand back. I’ve got fleas and ‘Demons do it better’.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My only complaint: The cover. I know you can’t judge a book by its cover or you might miss some good reads. However, covers do have a huge influence over me.

I confess that I liked the Blood Lust Rising cover better. Ella looks so fierce, I just knew there was a fantastic story waiting to be told – and it is Ella’s story. BUT I know sometimes this is taken out of the author’s hands and that’s okay. It doesn’t affect the quality of the novel.
.

“So this is your little ball of claws.”

I love Madelyne’s description of Ella and the old cover fit this phrase to a T.

What do you think of the Dark Cravings cover?
