Monday Mini #6 – Travel through time with Kat as she finds the truth about Redemption

I love ghosts and haunted houses. I find Redemption so fascinating, because this is about a real mansion and – guess what – it is really HAUNTED. That gives the novel a little something extra that makes me want to find out more.

Check it out at Haunted Graham Mansion.

It is up to you to decide what is fact and what is fiction.

So let’s get started on our journey for Redemption.

 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

Clara, the ghost of the mansion, made herself known to Kat.

Kat knew she would not rest until she found the truth.

She asked her Grandpa to tell her the story of Graham Mansion and her journey began.

“We’ve got to be seekers of truth, whether we like it or not.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~
A haunted mansion, crime, mystery, time travel, sadness, tragedy and young love.
Redemption caught my eye during a tour I saw on Promotional Book Tours. YAY! I won a signed, first edition paperback copy and my journey through time began. I love ghosts and hauntings, but there was so much more to the story, especially because there is a real Major Graham Mansion and that adds an extra dimension to the story for me. The writing is excellent and the story flows smoothly, seeming as if it is really happening. Realistic and sweet descriptions of daily life. It is not all gloom and tragedy, but first love and fun as Kat learns many of life’s lessons. I was surprised when I got so involved in Redemption. I thought it would be more like a prequel with details and descriptions, but not much action. Boy, was I wrong.
“…one of the most interesting things about the mansion is that it is a house within a house, a story within a story.”
“…embrace adventure, it can take you beyond your imagination.”
Is Winning the Lottery a Curse or a Blessing – Jackpot by Susan Fleet
Jackpot by Susan Fleet is a prequel for the Frank Renzi series. It tells how and why Frank made the move from Boston to New Orleans, a story no thriller lover will want to miss.
Each novel can stand alone.
To see my reviews for the other Renzi novels, scroll to the end of the post.
Myself, I play Powerball. How about you?
.
 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg
.
Four lottery winners.
Four murders.
Is there a serial killer on the loose?
~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love the cover of Jackpot, as I do for all of Susan Fleet’s novels. Simple and direct.

Susan Fleet loves to write about serial killers and Jackpot is another murder mystery that reads like True Crime. I do not find the plot so far fetched. I have watched The Lottery Changed My Life, a tv show about lottery winners. In one episode, a man was killed at a strip club. He had been known to carry large amounts of cash, making him a prime target.

Check out The Tragic Stories of The Unluckiest Winners.

Who knows what sets off a killer?

Jackpot is full of suspense, containing plots within plots. The story keeps unraveling and what starts out as a good thing, quickly turns bad. But then again, Susan loves to write about serial killers and does a fine job of it.

The characters come alive on the pages as Susan Fleet leads us from one murder to the next.

“He’d won $12 million and he was still a loser.”

Poor Nigel. He finally got a break. He won $12 million dollars in the lottery. His need to gamble, which had ruined his life, vanished.  But, some people seem to be jinxed. Bad things seem to follow them around, like bees to honey or flies to shit.

Frank is a very flawed hero, but I love him. He never hurts anyone on purpose and goes out of his way for a child. It seems Susan Fleet always has a child in her books, that crosses Frank’s path. He goes above and beyond to help.

I like my heroes tarnished. They become more real to me and Frank fits the bill. He is married and having an affair with a married woman, Gina. They have been together for years and he is faithful to her. They met because of their jobs. Frank is a cop and Gina a reporter. I would think they are an unlikely duo, until I think of how much time anyone spends at work.

Susan fleet has a book idea for Gina and the title would be The Lottery Winner. ^_^

I am very familiar with Boston and the Cape, locations in Jackpot. As Susan’s words unfold on the page, my mind develops photographs of the passing scenery.

(c) Sherry Fundin Sagamore Bridge, Cape Cod, MA

I have crossed this bridge many times and have sat in the traffic Susan Fleet talks about. We always worked at timing it to miss the worst –  traffic that goes on for miles, cars as far as you can see.

She also includes music in her novels, whether if be the Jazz of New Orleans or the Boston Pops. It makes me think of the fantastic Fourth of July fireworks show.

Ryan is Gina’s husband. His dad is an alcoholic named Tom Collins. Susan always manages to include a little humor with the horror.

“…after dark the scary boogey men come out.” I laughed. You have to be there.

Will the Domino Effect topple them? The Blake Mistake by I C Camilleri

I C Camilleri’s Blake series is a psychic adventure into the future.

Would their interference in current events be their future downfall?

Read on to see if the Domino Effect will topple them.

The cover of The Blake Mistake is awesome. I love the simplicity and subtle colors.

 MY 5 STAR REVIEW OF THE BLAKE SOUL.

 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

Emma found the trapdoor in the edge of the woods by accident.

She had no idea of the horror that had taken place in the hidden rooms.

No idea of how it would play into her future.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Blake Mistake has so much going on, I’m trying to think how I will describe it to you. I C Camilleri writes of the paranormal, romance, suspense, horror, murders, a serial killer, insecurity and jealousy and how the characters do there best to survive and find a happy ending.
Right off the bat, I C Camilleri surprised me. What? I should have known it would not be that simple. So many sub plots, my head would spin at times, being torn first one way and then another.
This review is really hard to write. I do not want to give away any of the good stuff. The surprises just keep on coming and I want you to find them on your own. So, here we go.
He wanted to go home. Would Jake welcome him? When I find out who he is and how he comes to return home, I’m stunned. My jaw dropped open and I just sat and sat, thinking.
Sam loved Jake as a brother and chose to marry Ben. Ben was always insecure about Sam and Jake’s relationship, but talk about really insecure, let’s talk about Emma.
Emma had set her sights on Jake as soon as she met him and got him. She is drop dead gorgeous and is so afraid that when she is old and gray, Jake will no longer love her. Emma’s brother is Ben.
Ben is a psychic, like his father Josh.
Ben’s dream took him away. He had a psychic glimpse into the future. Josh had seen it too. Ben, could choose to save his brother, Nick, but what about the others? Thousands of lives would change if he chose to rewrite destiny.  It would spread out into the world, like a ripple in the water. Could you live with it?
By seeing the future, Ben had interfered before and changed Jake’s destiny. Jake in turn was there to save Ben. What if meddling is a Mistake? A minor shift could make a massive change. What would the repercussions be? And would they come back to bite them.
Jake, Sam and Cathy’s nightmare past shaped their entire future and made them best friends for life.
I was reading along, when WTF? How could Jake do that? What a bummer. I don’t like this at all. Then Sam steps in. Without her, Jake’s life would have become much different. But you will have to read The Blake Mistake for yourself to find out what is happening.
The story just keeps getting better and better. There is so much going on and I C Camilleri kept me guessing. I liked that I had to slow down and take in all she was telling me.
Awesome, how she made Jake’s world. I cannot fathom it. How does I C Camilleri come up with these scenarios?  It’s a miracle that Jake ended up such a good man. His biggest downfall is jealousy. It is a ferocious beast that dominates his relationship with Emma. Between his jealousy and her insecurity, will their love for each other be enough to keep them together?
As I neared the end, my emotions ran AMOK. I felt a sense of urgency. I felt deep sorrow and am awed at I C Camilleri’s ability to take me to such a dark place. The scariest monsters are the human kind.
My eyes are watering and my hands are getting sweaty. Good thing I’m reading my Kindle and not a paperback. At least, I don’t think it will short circuit.
“You always think that you know best just because you have that Blake gift.”
“It’s not a gift, it is a bloody Curse.”
MY 5 STAR REVIEW OF THE BLAKE SOUL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I.C. CamilleriSomething about me…well, that’s complex. Basically I’m a medical doctor living in the UK. Reading and writing have always been my passion, relieving me from the everyday stress of my medical job. My first published novel is THE BLAKE CURSE. It is a psychological thriller and a romance set in Cambridge. It pivots on three powerful characters; Ben Blake, the young and gifted British Intelligence officer embarking on his first undercover assignment; the elusive Samantha Black; and Jake Snell, the rugged Earl full of vices, the rogue who has to tease out that single thread of goodness inside his crumbling shell. He is Ben’s only lifeline in this treacherous game.
My second novel, THE BLAKE SOUL is different from my first in that it is more of a romance, focusing on the passion and love between two people with totally different backgrounds and interests. Here’s the synopsis to whet your appetite;

.
Josh Blake wakes up to the sound of the chilling scream echoing inside his head. His childhood nightmares are haunting him again. But why return now after all those years of oblivion? He sets out to investigate and he changes the natural course of events, rewriting destiny and creating a whole new world for himself and those around him. His past turbulent childhood mingles with the present, unveiling the deep insecurities that lurk behind his polished exterior of fame, glory and wealth.

Immortal Revenge By Mary Abshire

Genre: Urban fantasy

Pages: 288

BLURB

Grief stricken Katie Dillinger is on a mission to claim revenge for the death of her lover. In a race against time to find the murderer, Katie reaches out to Riker, a man listed as her boyfriend’s emergency contact. The cold-hearted man comes to Katie’s aid, but she doesn’t completely trust him. To keep her friends safe, she insists they leave town immediately. But her efforts come too late. A friend disappears and a clear message is left in the wake: surrender or more people will die.

Katie’s world is turned upside down when she discovers Riker has vowed to protect her. She’s involved in a prophecy, one which her lover had been preparing her for before his murder. All the combat training he gave her suddenly makes sense, and as Katie fights to keep her friends alive, she’s forced to prioritize. Revenge now, saving mankind next.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Ravenous flames devoured the headless body pinned to the makeshift cross in the front yard. Katie stared, frozen in shock as she sat in her car. Chills shot down her spine. Her gut instinct told her the body burning was her boyfriend, her lover for the last nine years.
Smoke drifted into the car from the vents. One breath triggered bile to rise in her throat. She shoved the door open and bent. Her dinner came out in a mad gush, flying onto the driveway. Tears streamed down her cheeks while her stomach muscles tightened. More of the disgusting fluid rocketed up to her mouth. Pain and heartache overwhelmed her mind, body and soul. He was gone. Forever. He’d said the word countless times over the years. The meaning of the word never hit home, until now.
Sirens screamed through the night, moving closer by the second. The irritating sound intensified the deep throb in her head. She vomited again, unable to control the spasms. Through the thick smoke, she smelled gasoline. Oh God, they’d poured it on him to make sure he couldn’t survive. As if decapitation wasn’t enough.
Bright lights flashed in the darkness as they headed toward her. She’d stopped in the middle of the long driveway, not far from the burning cross holding her lover. Two police cruisers rushed from the road and came to a stop behind her car. Large fire engines blaring their horns passed them and her vehicle. They drove by so fast her vehicle swayed slightly.
“Katie?” Officer Hildebrand asked. She recognized his voice from having served him drinks at the bar every Friday night when he was off duty. “Katie, are you all right?”
She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand as she watched him jog toward her. He passed her and stopped a few feet in front of her car.
“Holy mother of…” He directed his gaze to the burning cross. “Is that a body?”
Another violent spasm hit her stomach. Teeth clenched and lips tight together, she held the urge to barf again, but she couldn’t stop the flood of tears pouring from her eyes.
“Ben, would you stop looking at it and help her out,” Officer Charles Donahue said, walking toward them. His deep smoker’s voice identified him anywhere.
“Katie!” Officer Hildebrand blurted out as if he’d forgotten about her. He rushed toward her and stopped short where her dinner lay on the ground. “Are you all right? Did someone hurt you?”
Unable to speak, she shook her head. Grief stabbed her in the heart. Why? How? Who? Something such as this shouldn’t have happened.
Officer Donahue stopped a few feet to the side of her door and took off his hat. His white hair gleamed thanks to the bright flames. He stared at the sight on the front yard. “My God.”
Officer Ben reached across the circle of puke and placed his hand on her shoulder. “Are you injured? Do you need medical attention?”
She shook her head again as more tears ran from her eyes. Gone. Kyle was gone. How could this happen? The question repeated in her mind.
“Ben, why don’t you drive her back to the station?” Officer Charles said. “I’ll take her car and meet you back there in a few minutes.” He placed his hat back on his head and straightened it.
“Katie, would you like to come with me?” Ben asked softly, as if he were a parent speaking to a young child.
Katie straightened her tense body. From the gap between the car door and the front windshield, she stared at Kyle’s farmhouse. Large flames leaped toward the sky and consumed the structure. Firemen carrying long hoses ran toward her home, but kept a distance. Clearly they couldn’t save it. God, so many memories. So much passionate love shared. So much laughter and happiness occurred within the walls.
“Come on,” Ben said, wrapping his fingers around her arm.
She grabbed her purse sitting in the passenger seat. Leaving the keys in the ignition and the car running, she slowly rose and avoided the disgusting mess on the ground.
Ben kept his hand on her arm while he escorted her toward his vehicle. She walked with her head up and as much poise as she could gather, but her heart ached fiercely. More tears escaped her eyes. Everything she owned and ever cared about was gone. She had nowhere to go.
Ben helped her into the passenger side of the police cruiser, opening the door and closing it once she was situated inside. Katie’s lip quivered as she stared ahead at the bright flames devouring the home she’d known for the last eight years and the one man on earth she’d loved. He was invincible, a fighter to the end. He was strong, smart, experienced, a teacher and lover at heart. He was also immortal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Review of Immortal Revenge by Mary Abshire

Katie pulled up to the house and saw the cross with a body burning on it.

She knew who it was.

He was immortal, yet he was gone.

If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she might not have believed it.

She grieved, then sought revenge.

~~~~~~~
The book starts out with a fire and the heat never lets up.
Kyle is a vampire and Katie is human, yet they had lived happily together for years. Until, they found him.
Kyle had been a part of the Order of the Legacy – the vampire government. Politics and ego for vampires is no different than it is for us humans. The Order had flipped from good to bad and Kyle had been on their hit list.
There are four kinds of vampires:
those that want to rule the world,
those that think of humans as only a food source,
those who are newer vampires and don’t know how to be a vampire
and those that want to live peacefully beside the humans.
I love a kickass protagonist and Katie fits the bill, a badass after my own heart. She gets knocked down, gets up, brushes herself off and does what needs to be done.
Her parents had died when she was 15 and she had been taking care of herself ever since. She was not a girly girl. Her best friend, Jules, called her Rambo.
I love the bar she works at – the Tasmanian Devil. He is one of my favorite creatures and Tasmanian Devil can even help describe Katie. She wasn’t afraid of anything. She was a doer and felt no need to mull things over, like some of us. Action could be her middle name.
Katie had a Black Camaro and a lead foot. I too love fast cars and that new Camaro looks pretty sweeeeet.
She had dined on Kyle’s blood, but had not turned. It gave her special gifts and along with the gifts came the withdrawal.
He had made arrangements with her, if anything ever happened to him. She had two vials of his blood and a name and number.
Riker had made a promise to Kyle that he would protect Katie. All Katie thought about was she only had a few days to get her revenge.
“Protect her. Teach her. She’s the one.”
Jules is Katie’s best friend and I cannot say that emphatically enough. Mary Abshire describes her as a disco loving, roller skating detective. She was persistent and would not quit until she had the answers she was looking for.
I couldn’t help but laugh when Jules told Katie she drove as if she was dodging cars like in Frogger.
The only thing I didn’t like was Katie being so reckless. She would react without thinking about the repercussions of her actions. But as I read on, she is the one coming up with the plan. If she is going to fulfill the prophecy, I’m thinking she is going to smarten up real quick. Just knowing how to fight won’t be enough.
There is tension throughout the book, as I am waiting for the battle to begin.
MY REVIEW OF NIGHT CHILL BY JEFF GUNHUS
.
Jack approached Piper’s and acknowledged the drunken man leaning against the wall.
Then SHE said, “Run while you can.”
From that point on, I was off and running, too. Jeff aroused my curiosity and curious minds must know.
~~~~~~

I have seen Jeff’s books around, even participated in some tours for him, but this is the first book of his I have read. Because I loved this book, The Templar Chronicles will be added to my TBR list ASAP.

The cover screamed chilly, ghostly.

The writing was so detailed and smooth, at times I felt I was walking side by side with Jack. It was a walk I willingly accepted, but never anticipated how bad the journey would be.

Jeff Gunhus does an excellent job of keeping the level of mystery and suspense high throughout the entirety of Night Chill.

I kept waiting and waiting as more details came to light – waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.

The writing went back and forth between Jack and Lauren’s perspectives. The suspense seemed to last forever. Jeff Gunhus would leave me hanging with Jack then go to Lauren. He would then leave me hanging with Lauren and go to Jack. He kept the level of suspense so high, building and building, until I felt my heart pounding and my head spinning. I love this.

When Jack pulled into the rest area, I had a feeling of dread? I could feel goosebumps and the hair stand up on my arms and neck. Creepy, scariness started and kept on going and going – like the Energizer bunny. I could hardly catch my breath before another awful thing came at Jack.

Jeff Gunhus’ description of Jack driving through the rainstorm was so familiar. Being from the Gulf Coast, popup thunderstorms are not unusual.  I hear the rain pounding on the top of the car. I see the wipers flashing across the windshield, unable to keep up. I feel the tensions in my body as he clutches the steering wheel struggling to see through the downpour.

I fell for Lonetree. I liked his elusiveness, as I tried to figure out his part in this horrific story. Is he going to be the hero that appears out of nowhere? Well, you will have to read the book for yourself to find out what he is doing in the small town of Prescott City?

The evil. What is it? Is it a supernatural demon from hell or just the human kind of monster?

The shit hit the fan and Jack was faced with the decision – drugs or action – he chose to act.

OH NO!. Is he really going into the cave? How many times have we seen this scenario? I mean, come on, we all know, don’t go in the cave. But…..I love it!!

“Welcome to Hell.”

Curiouser and curiouser.

Now, Jeff Gunhus takes us to Sarah, Jack and Lauren’s daughter. Sarah rolled the ball down the hall and I knew something bad was going to happen. My anticipation made me sit up straighter as if to brace myself for what is to come. I was very afraid for her and found myself calling out to her, telling her to leave it alone, let the ball go. Nooooo.

Why Sarah? Why are they so determined to take her, to kill her?

I love myths and legends. Cultures, sacrifice, civilizations little known, rituals, and Native American folklore.

When Lauren was in the most trouble and I thought it may be the end of her, Jeff gave me such a surprise. He gave a little hint and I thought something may be up, but until the end, I never saw the connection.

Mind Shadows I: Shattered

by Patrick Royal

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
The only thing that multi-published, award winning horror author, Tom Elliot, wanted was to move to the country for a change of scenery and relaxation, to a quiet part of southern Illinois. It seemed he’d picked out a wonderful spot, miles away from the closest neighbor and even further away from civilization.
Tom couldn’t write to save his soul. Weird thoughts trampled through his head and left him wondering if he’d made a mistake moving from Chicago. Could it have been that he ripped himself from his element, like his best friend, Michael Gully, had predicted? That he couldn’t answer yet.
Words came and flowed like wildfire, but at what price? Tom’s imagination was getting the best of him and running rampant. The very characters that he created tormented him, driving him mad where he couldn’t distinguish fiction from reality.
 EXCERPT
A moan drifted from the next room and teased Tom’s ear. Stopping to listen, he struggled to figure out what he’d heard. He stepped slowly into the living room. A woman stood with her back toward him. His heart thudded fast.
The woman moaned. Her long-fitted skirt hugged her hips, and a pleated white shirt. On the floor by her feet lay droplets of blood.
Tom peeped around the woman’s body and caught a glance of her face. “Lady, who are you? Why are you in my house?” he asked and widened his eyes.
VBT_Shattered_CoverBannerTom still faced the woman’s back, and she wept a bit harder. “You should know why I’m here,” she said in a soft but shaky voice. She turned around, faced him, and quickly threw her arms out in front of her. Blood trickled and dripped onto the floor from deep slits across both wrists. In her hand she held a yellow hair ribbon.
Tom’s jaw dropped open and he stumbled back, widening his view. “Oh my God. Wha…?”
The woman stepped closer to him and held her arms out with her wounds still dripping blood. Her body projected forward, as if traveling in flash.
“You did this! You killed my daughter, and you made me what you see.” She shoved her bloody wrists toward Tom.
“No, no. You’ve made a mistake,” Tom screamed and backed away from her. He clung to the wall with his legs weakening and his hands trembling.
The woman stood and laughed hysterically.
MY REVIEW
What if everything you wrote came to life?
~~~~

I love the cover and plot of this novel. I became so engrossed, I didn’t have time to write any notes. I think that is a good thing, because I do not want to give anything away.

Every time I read the title, I become misled, thinking the book is about a broken heart or failed romance. Not so. Look at the cover and it will dispel that idea. Read the book and the cover defines itself even more.

I thought I had an idea of where the book was going, but Patrick Royal did a fantastic job of twisting and turning the plot, leaving me in doubt. The depth of the horror and terror that Tom was going through kept me bouncing back and forth between reality and insanity.

I couldn’t tell if it was real or all in his mind.

Did Tom’s isolation lead him off the deep end?

 It is amazing what the mind is capable of and Shattered is a great example of a human brain’s ability to take us down a path we may not want to go.

Michael, Tom’s best friend came running when the shit hit the fan. He would do anything to help his friend.

The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat.

The ending totally blew me away. I never saw it coming until it was here, the very last paragraph.

I think my jaw dropped open. Then I laughed, as if I was the crazy person.

Excellent job, Patrick, and I can hardly wait to read more of your work.

Now, for my Review and Giveaway of

Vampire Blood by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

First off, let me tell you. Don’t ask questions, JUST DO WHAT I TELL YOU!

Go HERE and find the awesomesauce story of how Kathryn Meyer Griffith’s new author revised edition of Vampire Blood came to be in your hands.

Could there be a Dean Koontz sighting?

1957920

 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

Michelson thought he had found a home.

But Irene had been a bad vampire, leaving six mutilated victims to be found.

Now they were running again.

They were going back to Summer Haven.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vampire Blood starts with mutilated bodies and ends with a………..Bite.
I had read Human No Longer and loved the book and Jenny. Kathryn Meyer Griffith told me she had written a prequel to Human No Longer and I was curious to see how and why Jenny came to be Jenny.
Vampire Blood tells the story of the theater and how it changed Jenny and Joey’s lives forever.
Rumors and mystery had surrounded the theater. The townspeople always thought it was haunted. Oh no, it was much worse than that.
Jenny is the main character and I loved her. She had courage, with a capital C. Courage means that you face your fears, you do what must be done no matter how terrified you are.
This was the first time Jenny had ever lived alone. She felt it was time to find herself. She was afraid of the dark. Sounds funny, because she wrote horror novels, Vampire novels to be specific. Just because she wrote about Vampires, didn’t mean she believed they were real. It was fiction.
vampires photo: Vampires Vampires.jpgVampire photo by NoLifeKing66
Until the mutilated bodies were found.
Who would have thought it was all true?
I felt so sad for Joey and that surprised me. I did not feel that way when I read Human No Longer, but when I found out about his story, it may me want to wrap my arms around him and tell him it will be okay.
Vampires and shapeshifters. Some are so cruel and blood thirsty. They like playing with their food. Made me think of Orcas playing with seals. How terrifying can that be?
Others, like Michelson, just wanted to live and let live. Can a vampire have a heart?
A small town with lots of dead and mutilated bodies? My thought was – why weren’t they doing something sooner? I would have called in “Criminal Minds”.
Kathryn Meyer Griffith’s character and world building are not to be topped. Her writing flows smoothly and draws you deep into her stories.
Nature runs AMOK – Wild Times on Skidaway Island by Karen Dove Barr
VBT_Wild_Times_on_Skidaway_Island_Banner_copyI am very happy to be a part of the tour for Wild Times on Skidaway Island by Karen Dove Barr.
I have so much to share that I hope you will take a leisurely tour through the post and enjoy all that Karen Dove Barr and I have to offer for your enjoyment today – Guest Post, Excerpt and My Review.
I have a small collection of travel books. Before going to a new place, I always buy a book to learn as much as I can and find the photo op places of choice.
The cover immediately drew me in and when I read that Skidaway Island is a part of Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest, I became intrigued.
I lived in Atlanta, Georgia for two years and loved it. I never made it to Skidaway Island, but if I had read this book while there I would have made it a point to visit.
Wild Times on Skidaway Island
by Karen Dove Barr
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 SYNOPSIS

Wild Times on Skidaway Island, Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest, details life in a unique Audubon-designated, ecologically friendly refuge. There, golfers pitch balls around endangered great blue herons, mama raccoons march their babies across backyard decks where once Guale Indians trapped ancestors of the same raccoons, and residents dodge alligators and rescue snakes.

Even the vegetation is wild. Three hundred-year-old oaks dripping Spanish moss and poison ivy surmount an under-story of wax myrtle and holly. Carolina jasmine, Cherokee roses, and endangered orchids grow wild in the rain forest. The book examines choices residents make when stared down by a bald eagle, when a red-tailed hawk mistakes a golf ball for bird food, when wakened at midnight by deer munching hibiscus. Wild Times on Skidaway Island educates about the species that residents must adapt to on this historic island.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUEST POST
Why did Karen choose to write about this particular island?
            Skidaway Island has been my home since 1989.  When I first crossed the causeway and bridge to the island I didn’t know quite what to expect, even though I had lived in nearby Savannah for many years.  Development is allowed on only a few of Georgia’s barrier islands.  Skidaway had remained unbridged and mostly uninhabited in modern times.
A dappled herd of white-tailed deer grazed on the banks of the lagoon just inside the North Gate on my first trip to Skidaway Island, like shills for the real estate company. The saleslady neglected to warn that the thunder of hooves would wake us at midnight, when deer munched pots of hibiscus on our wooden deck.
VBT_Wild_Times_on_Skidaway_Island_Book_Cover_Banner_copyAfter we built the house a mama raccoon descended from the fronds of a palm tree and marched her trio of kits across the wide back deck while we watched, open-mouthed.
I didn’t know the history of the island; only that James Oglethorpe left a few of his original settlers on Skidaway Island when he landed in Georgia in 1733.  All the settlers died or left.
After Georgians struck down the English trustees’ prohibition against slavery men and women from Africa were brought to Skidaway and remained there for nearly one hundred years. By the end of the nineteenth century almost all were gone.
We built our house on land ringed by giant oaks but the center of our lot contained only dense, new-growth pine.  Traces of an abandoned dirt road crossed one edge.  When we dug our footings, we found shards of blue and white china.  And when I moved in the spirits of previous residents filled our rooms.
Wild Times on Skidaway Island  lets the world share the facts I’ve learned about this beautiful but sometimes uninhabitable  place.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

I chose this excerpt because it had me cracking up as I read it.

When Walt and Carol Culin topped their house at The Landings with a coated metal roof they were confident the roof would be problem-free for a hundred years.  Walt’s contacts as head of an industrial coating company helped him get the latest technology.  Even a hurricane shouldn’t destroy their unusual–looking roof.

But nothing in Walt’s Princeton-educated background prepared him for dryocopus pileatus, the pilated wookpecker.

Male pilated woodpeckers are fixated on the notion that female woodpeckers are attracted to the stud with the noisiest pecker. Usually the woodpecker has to be content with drumming on a hollow tree to resonate his sound. Walt and Carol’s metal roof, however, raised the bar for the local woodpecker population.  Walt and Carol were regularly awakened by mate-seeking woodpeckers as soon as they moved into the house.

Walt ended up having to make a run to Toys ’R Us for rubber snakes. Glued to the chimney alongside a big fake owl, the snakes allowed Walt and Carol to catch some winks in the early morning during woodpecker mating season.

MY REVIEW

What can I say? If you are a traveler that does your research before taking a trip, this is a book you will want to add to your collection before visiting Skidaway Island, Georgia’s Historic Rain Forest.

Karen Dove Barr made me think of Cape Cod as I read the book.

I could feel the mud oozing through my toes as she talked of the mucky river bottom. It has a very distinctive aroma, not pleasant, but all of us water lovers learn to love it. I always wonder what critters are under the muck waiting to nibble on my toes.

I could picture the kayakers riding the waves, the bikers pedaling through the scenic pathways, the noreasters blowing and the liquor smugglers trying to bring their wares to the thirsty residents without being caught by the man.

Skidaway Island Oceanographic Institute would be a must see on anyone’s list. The Oceanographic Institute is a 700 acre campus that is part of the University of Georgia. Photo from Skidaway Island Oceanographic Institute website.

The Island differs greatly from the Cape when it comes to the vegetation. The towering oaks can be over 100 years old, with massive branches that create an umbrella of shade . Even on the hottest days you can take some comfort in their embrace.

The critters abound and I love all nature’s gifts, from the flying squirrel, to the pesky deer trying to eat all your beautiful flowers. There are those irritating raccoons and even bobcats spying on whatever comes to the bird feeder. There are opossum, river otters, minks, rabbits, fox, bats and feral pigs.

Birdwatchers will love the abundance of flying creatures. The crows look down as if we are the novelty. I laughed when Karen talked about coming up on a snake while biking. It was actually an anhinga anhinga, a snakebird. Eagles have returned to Skidaway Island, so the residents must be doing something right. When you visit you may be lucky to have a Bald Eagle sighting yourself. Pilated woodpeckers – I have always wanted to see one of these. They remind me of a pterodactyl.

I love birds, but my favorite creatures have to be found in the water. And Skidaway Island does not lack for the variety, large and small, to be watched and photographed. They even have the knobbed whelk as their official state shell. How cool is that? There are also all the little critters that live in reeds and muck. For those weak at heart, you might want to wear your water shoes.

Skidaway Farms is a cooperative for growing vegetables, trying to keep the wildlife from farm-art-023dining before the residents. There is a children’s garden and they even have a fall festival. Photo from Skidaway Farms website.

The flowers and vegetation are all around you, vibrant and in some instances protected, such as the green orchid, one of the few orchids to be able to endure frosty weather.

I became enamored with Skidaway Island. As Karen talked of her home, I was kayaking, (but not running, walking), biking, fishing, swimming, and just enjoying nature’s bounty. What a fantastic environment to be in. People just need to remember, it is nature’s home, we are the visitors.

Karen – your book made we want to jump in my car and cruise on up to Skidaway Island!

One thing CAN change your life forever – The Thief Redeemer by Leigh Clary Abdou

The cover of The Thief Redeemer made me want to pick up the book and find out what is happening.

The silhouette made me curious, wanting to know – who is he?

goodreads-badge-add-plus

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marcus and I are car thieves and we are very good at what we do. It is a game to me and I am addicted to the rush.
I find the car and he gets us in.
I am the brains and he is the muscle.
Atlanta-Hotlanta is more appropriate.
My biggest mission in life, though, is finding my brothers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Thief Redeemer by Leigh Clary Abdou is hard to classify. Brandon is a first class car thief. His main goal in life is to find the brothers that were taken away because he was unable to care for them.

Brandon’s plan is to use Claire to infiltrate Birch’s law office and find the files for his brothers. Birch has been after him for a long time and he was going to turn the tables on him. It was a vendetta that Brandon was determined to win.

Brandon takes it a step further when he decides to kidnap Birch’s daughter. Who does he see when they remove the bag from her head?

He never thinks of redemption until………

Claire Peters has the looks of an angel, a blond beauty. Brandon could feel the goodness radiating off her. Claire drew Brandon in, because she makes him think of good things.She was already falling for him before he kidnapped her. Is it really so far fetched that her attraction to him would grow stronger after the kidnapping?

Brandon is an angry, violent criminal, using fists and guns when fists are not enough. Is he just a punk, selfish and arrogant? A user and taker. Pond scum. Can he change? I was really curious as to how and why he become this way?

One thing can change your life. Good to bad. Bad to good.

Brandon spent years being the leader of the largest car theft ring in Atlanta, then he crosses another line by kidnapping Claire. How can it end good? I can’t figure out how Leigh Clary Abdou will make everything okay, but it is a novel so it should end happy ever after. Right?

Tweety Bird Corvette (c) Sherry Fundin

Tweety Bird Corvette (c) Sherry Fundin

At this point I am halfway through the novel. As I read on, I start to figure it out and race through the pages to see if I am right.

It didn’t end when I thought it would. Super. Leigh Clary Abdou added another element to the The Thief Redeemer. I love it.

Would Clair choose the wild card and an unpredictable future or go for the safe and normal. What would you do? Bad boy or good guy? Hmmmmm.

QUOTES

“You’re not a good guy…”

“Doesn’t the human life mean anything to you at all? You spoke of your brothers…what if someone did this to them?”

Always pisses me off watching a show like Criminal Minds or in real life and the criminal feels sorry for himself and his posse, but could care less about anyone else. Why should any mercy be shown when they show none?

“I haven’t felt during the past ten years. Anger and rage have taken over my soul this past decade , and now that I’ve experienced hope and love, I don’t know if I can return to who I’ve been.”

“You will have to make this decision on your own. But I can tell you this. Don’t let the fear of the unknown dictate your future. Sometimes in life we have to take chances. Sometimes these chances have a positive impact, and other times they have a negative impact. You will have to make a decision and let time reveal the answer to you.”

Words to live by in any situation.

“She is the redeemer of thieves.”

Twists, turns and surprises make this book an excellent read. Even more surprising is the quality of the writing and the detailed story that kept me engrossed from beginning to end and this is a debut novel. Job well done Leigh. I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next.

I love how Leigh integrated the library and books into this debut novel – The Thief Redeemer.

I received this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Monday Mini #5 – Clean by Alex Hughes

I won this book in a giveaway on the Readers Confession blog. Thank you Readers Confession and Alex Hughes.

You can click on the cover or Clean (A Mindspace Investigations Novel) by Alex Hughes, to get your copy.

 photo goodreads-badge-add-38px11_zps1ae6e47f.jpg

Clean by Alex Hughes caught my eye with its cool cover and the futuristic storyline. I mean, a serial killer and a disgraced telepathic, druggie cop – what’s not to like?

I loved when Alex Hughes described Cherabino driving – sky lanes – they don’t use a road and using the siren just because she can. Real cops don’t do that, do they? lol

He picked up the vials, thinking of shooting up. Almost going off the wagon was a bad time to have a precognition. No one would believe he was the next target of the serial killer. No, he won’t, he can’t, but the needle is loaded and heading toward his vein. I kept saying no, no, no. Don’t do it. Just say no! OMG, he’s really gonna do it.

That passage was the most involved I was in the book. The rest of the story just didn’t grab me. I can’t really say anything was wrong with Clean and I really thought I would love it. It was well written and the story flowed smooth, maybe it was just one of those days. You know what I mean. I am very glad to have read it and want to read more about Mindspace Investigations.
